MASON CITY — The former students and athletes from Thornton High School would like to wish their former teacher and coach, Wayne Opheim, a happy belated birthday. He celebrated his 82nd birthday on March 9. Wayne taught and coached girls basketball and softball in Thornton from 1957 through 1961, where the girls set many school records and had great winning seasons in both sports, every year he was there. He was a great teacher and coach who provided lasting, positive influence on us all — so Happy Birthday from the Thornton Thunderbolts and Thunderettes, and we wish you many more.

Goldwater scholar AMES —Chloe Dedic, an Iowa State University student, of Mason City, was named a Goldwater Scholar in the nation’s premier undergraduate scholarship award in mathematics, natural sciences and engineering. The scholarships were announced at ISU by the University Honors Program, which coordinates nominations and applications. Dedic, is a third-year mechanical engineering major. The 275 Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit, from a field of 1,095 students, who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The one and two-year scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. Dedic, who was first in her 2008 graduating class at Mason City High School, has been involved in undergraduate research experiences at Iowa State since her freshman year. Dedic is also involved in a wide variety of campus activities. She is in the ISU Wind Ensemble, a member of the Water Polo Club and Engineers Without Borders. She has been a Women in Science and Engineering learning community peer mentor, an Ames Middle School mentor and a lector at her church. A member of ISU’s Honors Program and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, Dedic has won several competitive scholarships and competitions. Next spring, she will begin the concurrent master’s/bachelor’s program at Iowa State and plans to pursue her Ph.D. and an academic career.

Shindelar, 40 years OSAGE — William Anslem Shindelar and Donna Marie (Hapke) Shindelar, of Osage, were married May 1, 1971, in Lacrosse, Wis. The couple will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with a fun-filled weekend in Las Vegas, Nev. The couple’s children and their spouses are sons, William Alan Shindelar and Robert Adam Shindelar, who reside in their hometown of Las Vegas. Foundations of a beautiful relationship and loving partnership were formed 40 years ago as Bill and Donna Shindelar sealed their vows in the presence of friends and family in the city they met, Lacrosse, Wis. After starting a life together and raising two sons out west in Las Vegas, Nev., they recently returned home to the midwest and now live on a peaceful acreage, near Osage, Iowa. They remain very close and speak frequently with their two children and have never lost each other’s love from the initial spark over 40 years ago.
