FOREST CITY — The Waldorf College Student Senate hosted its annual Students Excelling in Activities and Leadership, or SEAL awards April 25. Several students were honored for their involvement with student organizations and public service activities. Shreeve receives President’s Award at Waldorf FOREST CITY — Chelsey Shreeve, of Cottrellville, Mich., received the 2014 President’s Award at Waldorf College’s commencement ceremony, May 3. Shreeve graduated with a double major in theatre arts and education. She was involved in theatre and Alpha Psi Omega National Theatre Honor Society. The President’s Award is Waldorf’s most prestigious student award. It is awarded each year at the spring commencement ceremony to one deserving student who displays outstanding academic achievement, exceptional leadership, moral character, high integrity and service beyond self. The selection of the President’s Award begins with the students who nominate and vote for candidates, followed by faculty and staff input before the final decision is made.

Alliant Energy Foundation awards scholarship BELMOND — The Alliant Energy Foundation awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Kacie Schumann, of Belmond, and a senior at Belmond-Klemme High School. Schumann was one of 25 recipients of the $1,000 scholarships awarded to graduating high school seniors throughout Iowa and Wisconsin. Award selection is based on participation in a leadership role in community service activities and volunteer work, academic grade point average, standardized test scores, and the content of a 300-word essay submission. The Alliant Energy Foundation provides more than 100 educational scholarships annually to young adults throughout Alliant Energy’s utility service area.
Schmitt graduates from University of Nebraska LINCOLN, Neb. — Jake A. Schmitt, of Algona, was among more than 2,900 students who received degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in ceremonies May 9-10. Schmitt received Bachelor of Science degrees in computer engineering and electrical engineering.
U of I Students inducted into Phi Beta Kappa IOWA CITY — Ruth Lapointe, of Mason City, and Julia Jessen, of Joice, were inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society for the 2013-14 academic year, at the University of Iowa. Noon Rotary Club announces scholarships MASON CITY — The Noon Rotary Club presented scholarships to four Mason City students. The winners were selected on the basis of academic performance, and participation in community service projects that exemplify the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self.” The students read their essays and accepted their scholarship checks at the Noon Rotary meeting on May 19. Collin Boyle is the son of Cindy Boyle and Scott Boyle. Collin will attend Luther College. Jared Lichman is the son of Tim and Laurie Lichman. He will attend Central College in Pella this fall. MASON CITY — Over 90 seniors from 42 area high schools, attended KIMT’s 25th annual Scholastic AllStars/Golden Apple Awards luncheon, May 13. KIMT began Scholastic All-Stars in 1989 to recognize high school seniors who excel academically in school activities, as well as in their communities. The Golden Apple Award finalists and the Teacher of the Year were also recognized. This award is an honor to educators who are nominated by their students because of the impact they have made in their life. The five finalists include: Randy Mogk, St. Ansgar Middle School; Betsy Kirby, Harding Elementary School; Sarah Downing, Charles City High School; Jeslynne Vaage, Lincoln Intermediate School, and Troy Einertson, Clear Creek Elementary School. The Golden Apple Teacher of the Year is Sharon Schaub, of Northwood-Kensett Elementary School in Northwood.
UNI Graduate receives Lux Service Award CEDAR FALLS — Daye Pope, of Clear Lake, is among three graduating students from the University of Northern Iowa presented the Lux Service Award, for exemplary service to the university. A political communication major, Pope has been actively involved in UNI Proud, the Feminist Action League, Panther Magazine, the Northern Iowa and the Northern Iowa Student Government (NISG). Pope served as president of UNI Proud for two years, and was part of the group of students who called for the new LGBT Center on campus. Pope also volunteered with various political campaigns, including serving as an intern for Sen. Tom Harkin in Washington, D.C. Requirements for the award include being scheduled to graduate in 2014, a minimum 2.5 grade point average, and demonstration of service to UNI during the recipient’s academic career that will leave a lasting impact on the university community.
Lovell inducted into Honor Society CLEAR LAKE — Christopher Lovell, of Clear Lake, was recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, a collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Lovell was initiated at the University of Texas at Arlington. Membership requires nomination and approval by a chapter.
