Achievement Exchange Club Youth of the Month MASON CITY — The Exchange Club of Mason City named Erik Floden “Youth of the Month” for October.

He is the son of Tom and Linda Floden, and is a senior at Newman Catholic High School.

Floden carries a 4.0 grade point average and has been on all semester honor rolls during high school, is a member of the National Honor Society and has been named a National Merit Scholar Commended Student. He is active in music as a percussionist for the Newman concert band, jazz band, pep band, the musical’s pit band and the Epiphany Parish Youth Choir. He has participated and lettered in cross country, track and Floden hockey, along with being a member of the Boy Scouts, and fulfilling the requirements for the rank of Eagle Scout.

In addition, Floden was a member of the quiz bowl team at Newman that completed at the National Quiz Bowl the past two years. He plans to attend either Iowa State University or Luther College and major in physics with a specialization in astrophysics.

Wedding Sundt, Salvesen wedding 31, 2013. The bride wore a blue dress and carried a bouquet of peacock feathers and crystals. The ceremony included both Irish and Norwegian wedding traditions including the bride wearing the traditional Norwegian Solje wedding pin that was a gift from her mother’s Norwegian student exchange parents that she wore on her wedding day in 1979.

The wedding party included Brandy Mittlestadt Molitor, Lainee Evans Smith, Emily Sundt, Tyler Sandahl, Adam Kobriger, and Neil Johnson.

The couple resides in Rochester, Minnesota, where the bride works for the Mayo Clinic Finance Department and the groom is a manager for the North Menards, Rochester.

Award & Achievement Merritt named Rotary Student of Month MASON CITY — Morgan Merritt, a senior at Mason City High School, was selected as the Mason City Noon Rotary Club’s “Student of the Month,” for November.

She is the daughter Merritt of Eric and Brenda Merritt.

Merritt is a member and officer for the Mason City High School Symphonic Band, Jazz Band I, Mohawk Power Pep Band,

and Marching Band, where she is a drill leader. She is involved in Student Senate, Academic Decathlon, History Bowl, the Silver Cord program, and is an officer in Best Buddies.

She is a varsity letter winner in girls tennis and girls swimming, and participates in summer swim club.

Her awards and honors include: Principal’s List, Honor Roll, inducted into National Honor Society, CIML All-Academic recognition in tennis and swimming, Mason City High School Student of

the Month, and is the 2013 Gerald R. Prescott Character Award winner.

Her community activities include attending First Covenant Church where she helps in the nursery, is an audiovisual technician, and is also involved in the youth group.

She enjoys volunteering at Lime Creek Nature Center and lifeguarding at Mason City Family Aquatic Center.

Merritt plans to attend Central College in Pella, Iowa, next year and major in history.

Award & Achievement John Jones achieves Eagle Scout rank ROCKFORD — John Jones, Rockford, Iowa, a member of Troop 34, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on July 25, 2013. He began his scouting experience as a Tiger in the Cub Scout Pack 34, earning the ranks of Bobcat, Wolf, Bear and Webelo. In 2007, he received the Arrow of Light Award.

John joined Troop 34 in 2007. He climbed the ranks of Second Class, Tenderfoot, First Class, Star and Life Scout. He earned a total of 31 required and elective badges. John was inducted into the Order of the Arrow in 2009. John’s Eagle project consisted of constructing cement block planters at two informational signs for Rockford churches and groups.
