The Newman Marathon committee would like to thank our countless volunteers who helped make the Newman marathon, half-marathon, Corporate Relay Team marathon, 5k and 10k races a success. Volunteers offered their services for traffic control, runner guidance, water stations, spaghetti supper and finish line activities. Also, thank you for all the support from the professionals in our community.

Our thanks, appreciation and congratulation also goes out to our runners!

For this event, we have over 200 runners for the full marathon, half marathon, Corporate Relay Team marathon and the 5k or 10k races. Of these, many are from out of state, some coming as far as Alaska, California, Ohio, Virginia, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, New Mexico, North Carolina and New York!

In state, we have many runners that were outside our Mason City/Clear Lake

community. This participation not only helps our school but our community as well with tourism dollars.

Thanks During times of struggle it can be difficult to see rays of hope. On May 3, 2012, our son, Hayden was diagnosed with a rare, degenerative disease called Friedreich’s Ataxia. Through our devastation we made the decision to focus on what we “can do” instead of what we “can’t” to find a cure. On Saturday morning, September 28th, we were heading to Central Park to prepare for the 2nd Annual Hayden’s Hope Warrior Run to cure FA. I looked up expecting to see rain clouds moving in. To my relief, there was a glorious beam of sun coming from the sky. It was a comforting reminder of how I feel about the people of North Iowa who have embraced our son, Hayden, since his diagnosis. For the second year in a row we have been overwhelmed by the kindness, generosity and support of people in Mason City and surrounding area. The saying “what can we do to help” is not a cliche, but the words we have Gemaehlich, 65 years heard so often by so many people. aWARDS Poppe wins Texaco Showdown state title CLARKSVILLE — Maddie Poppe, of Clarksville, won the 32nd annual Texaco Country Showdown Iowa state title, and received $1,000. Riverside Casino showcased acts which had won a local contest sponsored by radio stations throughout the state, enabling each to perform at the state level competition, of America’s country music talent search.

Poppe represented radio station KSMA of Mason City and received the judges’ top scores.

She competed at the regional level Oct. 12, in the Midwest Regional Final at Northern Lights Casino in Walker, Minn., for a chance to advance to the national final. Winners will receive an all-expense paid trip to Nashville to compete for $100,000 and the title, “Best New Act in Country Music.

Leo Joseph Paulus MASON CITY — Ryan and Tarah Paulus, of Mason City, are the parents of a son, Leo Joseph Paulus, born Aug. 29, 2013 at 7:06 a.m. at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

He weighed 7 pounds and was 19.5 inches long.

He is welcomed by big sister, Lyla. Grandparents are Jerry and Karla Engelhardt of Marble Rock, and Rick Paulus and Linda Paulus of Rockford. Great-grandparents are George and Darlys Keilman of Rockford, LuVerne and Louise Wagner of Osage, and Shirley Venz of St. James City, Fla.
