ALGONA — Two Algona High School musicians, Jacob Lampman and Peter Jorgenson, participated in the 2012 Class 3A Iowa All-State Jazz Band, May 10, at the Iowa Bandmasters Association Conference in Des Moines. Lampman, a senior, participated on guitar, and Jorgenson, a freshman, on alto sax. The students submitted a CD of audition materials in January and were accepted based on a blind audition process. Acceptance into the Iowa All-State Jazz Band is the highest honor a high school jass band student can receive in the state of Iowa, according to a news release.

Grinnell College Bowen Scholarship GRINNELL — Emily Hackman, a 2012 graduate of Mason City High School, is one of four Iowa high school graduates to receive a Bowen Scholarship at Grinnell College. Bowen scholars are selected on the basis of a written scholarship examination and an on-campus interview, and are awarded a $25,000 scholarship each year ($100,000 total during four years at Grinnell).
