Mr. Chevrolet

M

ost people know the name Chevrolet, but few people know much about the man behind the Chevrolet brand. The Chevrolet car company is actually named for one man — Louis Chevrolet — a dare-devil who came from France to America and became famous as a racing driver. SOME FACTS ABOUT LOUIS CHEVROLET: • As early as July 16, 1895, Louis Chevrolet was the winner of a French cycling race as reported in the “Journal de Beaune.” • In May 1905, Chevrolet’s name first appeared in press reports in connection with motorized races. Driving a massive Fiat racer at Morris Park, N.Y., Chevrolet broke the track’s flying-mile record with a 68-mph run. He then went on to win a three-mile flying-start race at the same event. • During the 1906 speed trials at Ormond Beach, Fla., Chevrolet drove a French-built Darracq race car, powered by what was at the time a spectacularly powerful 200-hp V8, to a then world-record speed of 118.7 mph. • On March 5, 1909, Chevrolet was engaged as a driver for William C. “Billy” Durant’s famed Buick racing team. Subsequently, Chevrolet’s successes as a race car driver multiplied. While brothers Arthur and Gaston would also race professionally, Louis generally lead the Chevrolet team when they competed together. • Despite all of the spectacular successes, Chevrolet paid a price for his racing career. Celebrated in the American press as “the dare-devil Frenchman,” he is said to have spent nearly three years in hospital beds as the result of various accidents. When the youngest Chevrolet brother, Gaston, died as the result of a racing accident in 1920, Louis vowed to never race again. MS-57691

HISTORICAL TIMELINE OF THE CHEVROLET BRAND Since it was founded on Nov. 3, 1911, Chevrolet has produced more than 200 million cars and trucks. At the time of its founding a century ago, 270 American automotive brands existed. Today, only four of those survive: Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and Ford. (The GMC Truck brand also debuted in 1911, with its ďŹ rst offering arriving as a 1912 model.) 1911: 1912: 1913: 1914: 1915: 1916: 1918: 1924: 1927: 1929: 1934: 1935: 1942: 1945: 1948: 1950: 1953: 1954: 1955:

1956:

Race car driver Louis Chevrolet and GM founder William C. “Billyâ€? Durant co-found the Chevrolet Motor Company in Detroit on Nov. 3. Louis Chevrolet‘s $2,150 Series C “Classic Six,â€? a luxurious high-performance six-cylinder model, hits the streets of Detroit. Louis Chevrolet parts company with Billy Durant, leaving behind the rights to produce cars bearing his name. The Chevy bowtie logo, designed under Durant's auspices, appears for the ďŹ rst time in an ad. The ďŹ rst car wearing the Chevy bowtie logo appears. It’s the Royal Mail Roadster. The Chevy Model 490 debuts as a 1916 model with a list price of $490. The ďŹ rst “value-pricedâ€? Chevy, it puts Chevrolet in direct competition with Henry Ford’s Model T. Billy Durant, who had been forced out of General Motors in 1910, regains control of the company he founded. Chevrolet introduces its ďŹ rst truck, based on the Model 490 car chassis. Also this year, Chevrolet becomes part of General Motors. A Chevrolet plant is opened in Copenhagen, Denmark. It’s the ďŹ rst Chevy plant outside the U.S. Chevrolet overtakes Ford for the ďŹ rst time, with sales of more than 1 million vehicles. The Chevrolet Six debuts. It’s called “a six for the price of a fourâ€? because major American competitors at the time offered only four-cylinder engines at about the same price. Chevy introduces the “knee actionâ€? independent front suspension on its 1935 model Master Series. It’s revolutionary engineering for a “value-pricedâ€? car. Chevrolet introduces the Suburban Carryall, the original SUV. It invents a new segment. Today the Suburban name is the longest-running continual nameplate in the industry. Production of civilian Chevrolets ceases due to the war effort. Production of trucks for military use continues. Chevrolet’s civilian car production resumes. The all-new “Advance Designâ€? pickup trucks are introduced, Chevy’s ďŹ rst all-new truck since before World War II. This classic eventually would become the design inspiration for 2003-2006 Chevy SSR. Chevy becomes the ďŹ rst manufacturer to offer an automatic transmission on a low-priced American car when the Powerglide transmission debuts on 1950 models. Corvette debuts with the industry’s ďŹ rst regular-production ďŹ berglass body. The 50 millionth General Motors car is a gold, 1955 Chevrolet Bel-Air. Chevy’s legendary small-block V-8 debuts on the all-new 1955 Chevrolet. Also that model year, the Cameo Carrier pickup – a “gentleman’s truckâ€? – debuted with its unique and highly styled cargo box.

Dinah Shore, the ďŹ rst woman to host her own TV show, concludes her opening broadcast singing “See The USA In Your Chevrolet.â€? The song subsequently closes each show. The Chevrolet Bel-Air of 1957 goes on to become an American icon. Also, Chevy introduces fuel injection as an option on some Chevys and Corvettes, a ďŹ rst for an American production car, while Chevy trucks for the ďŹ rst time offer four-wheel drive. The Impala nameplate debuts. The car-based El Camino pickup debuts on the full-size Chevy sedan chassis. Also arriving in 1959 as a 1960 model is the Corvair, the ďŹ rst and – to this day – only American car boasting a rear-mounted, air-cooled, six-cylinder engine. The Beach Boys record “4-0-9,â€? an ode to Chevys powered by the brand’s 409 cubic-inch V-8. The now-legendary Corvette Sting Ray Split-Window Coupe debuts. The only model year for the split rear-window design, the car is highly coveted today by collectors. The Chevelle debuts. It’s an “intermediateâ€? car slotted between the full-size Chevys and the compact Chevy Nova. Camaro debuts. It’s Chevy’s answer to the Ford Mustang. The 450-hp 1970 Chevelle SS 454 arrives. Today it’s considered by some car buffs the greatest muscle car ever. Also that year, the “personal luxury coupeâ€? Monte Carlo debuts. Its 6-footlong hood secures its fame as the car with the longest hood in Chevy history. The “Baseball, Hot Dogs and Apple Pieâ€? Chevy ad campaign is born. The 100 millionth Chevy – a 1979 Monza – is built. This year is signiďŹ cant for what it was missing: a 1983 model-year Corvette. The all-new C4 Corvette was to debut in the fall of 1982 as an ’83 model, but production delays prevented the car from bowing until January 1983, so Chevy dubbed it an ’84 model. 1983 is the only model year with no Corvette since the legendary icon debuted in 1953. The “Heartbeat of Americaâ€? ad campaign debuts. The ďŹ rst all-new Chevy full-size pickups since 1973 arrive with a newly available “extended cabâ€? body style. Chevy trucks launch a new ad campaign based on the Bob Seger song, “Like A Rock.â€? The millionth Corvette is built. The 638-hp Corvette ZR1 is the fastest and most powerful production car in GM history – a distinction it retains today. The reborn Chevy Camaro, which had been discontinued after the 2002 model year, arrives and soon outsells Ford’s Mustang. The Chevrolet Volt “extended rangeâ€? electric car debuts. Also, the Chevrolet brand celebrates its 100th birthday on Nov. 3, 2011.

THE DOZEN COOLEST CHEVROLET CARS OF ALL TIME By Dan Wiese, Automotive writer Photos courtesy of Chevrolet Motor Division

Only love has been immortalized in popular song more the Chevrolet. It’s said that Chevy pops up in the lyrics of more than 500 tunes recorded by performers as diverse as Dinah Shore (“See the USA in your Chevrolet”), The Beach Boys (“She’s real fine, my 4-0-9”), Don McLean (“Drove my Chevy to the levy . . .”) and – now that he once again goes by the name Prince – the artist formerly known as “the artist formerly known as Prince” (”Little red Corvette, baby, you’re much too fast”). Inspired by such a cultural catalog, we decided to sing Chevy’s praises ourselves, focusing on what the brand really is all about – great cars. Here are our nominees for the dozen greatest Chevy cars of all time.

1912 CHEVY SERIES C CLASSIC SIX: This is the car that started it all. And it arrived with a flourish. At the time, Henry Ford’s Model T was chugging along with a 177 cubic-inch four-cylinder that made 20 hp, taking Henry’s T to a top speed of 45 mph or so. Chevrolet arrived on the scene with its Classic Six boasting a 299 cubic-inch six-cylinder. Making 40 hp and reaching speeds as high as 65 mph – pretty heady stuff at the dawn of the last century – the Series C Classic Six was a force to be reckoned with. Known by the public simply as “the Chevrolet,” the Classic Six got the bowtie brand off to a great start – even if the bowtie logo itself would not debut for another two years.

1932 CHEVY DELUXE SPORT ROADSTER: This is the car that identified Chevrolet as a styling leader. With its chrome accents, rakish twin spare tires (one conspicuously mounted on each front fender) and a sassy rumble seat out back, the Deluxe Sport Roadster must have cheered Depression-era car buffs who caught its handsome form motoring by. The Deluxe also was affordable, a fact that help Chevrolet retain its No. 1 sales position in the depths of the Great Depression. Ford’s Model A coupe may be 1932’s best-remembered car today, thanks mainly to the Beach Boys’ tune “Little Deuce Coupe” (“deuce” standing for the “2” in “ ‘32”), but – quoting Brian Wilson – we’d have say to those who’ve forgotten the ’32 Chevy Deluxe Sport Roadster, “You don’t know what I got.”

1953 CHEVY CORVETTE: The GM Motorama opened on Saturday, Jan. 17, 1953, at New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria, and the world has never been the same. That event saw the first Corvette unveiled as a “dream car,” but it quickly went into production after the wildly enthusiastic response from the public. Its inaugural model year of 1953 saw only 300 of these fiberglass beauties built, each painted Polo White and boasted a red interior, a black canvas top and removable plastic side curtains in lieu of roll-up windows. From a performance standpoint, the ’53 may have been an under-achiever, with its docile straightsix and two-speed automatic transmission, but it was soooo good-looking. Performance would improve in the future. GM’s official history of Corvette states: “Since only 300 were produced in 1953, the Chevrolet Central Office in Detroit had to control their distribution. Among the first lucky owners? John Wayne.” We would argue that, with the birth of Corvette, all car enthusiasts got lucky.

1955 CHEVY NOMAD: Even in pre-rock ‘n’ roll America, making a station wagon cool was a Herculean task. Chevy rose to the challenge with the 1955 Nomad, a two-door wagon that had its styling roots – particularly its roof and rear-end treatment – in the Corvette-based Nomad “Dream Car” concept, which wowed ‘em during the 1954 General Motors Motorama. In production form, Nomad shared the underpinnings of the allnew ’55 Chevy sedan, but aft of the A pillar went its own styling way. The forward-leaning roof pillars, wrap-around D-pillar glass and utterly unique tailgate treatment, complete with chrome ribs, made this the most head-turning wagon in suburbia. Marketed as a high-trim “halo” vehicle for Chevrolet, its 1955-57 versions remain passionately sought after by collectors.

1957 CHEVY BEL-AIR: With its grinning grille, sassy fi ns and overall styling audacity, the 1957 Chevy Bel-Air took what the ’55 had started and then elevated it to the next level. Sure, it was the ’55 – longer, lower and wider than its predecessor – that brought Chevrolet styling into the modern era. And it was the ’55 that introduced the “Turbo-Fire V-8” (gotta love that name), the first of the now-legendary Chevy small-block V-8s. But the ’57 took all those ingredients and added panache, not to mention a bigger small block. With its marvelous power-to-weight ratio in V-8 trim and its hey-look-at-me styling, the 1957 Chevy Bel-Air seemed to encapsulate in chrome, steel and rubber all the giddy optimism of Eisenhower-era America. More than half a century later, the ‘50s are still identified primarily by three American icons: Ike, Elvis and the ’57 Chevy.

1963 CHEVY CORVETTE STING RAY SPLIT-WINDOW COUPE: This knockout heralded the second generation of America’s Sports Car. Forty-eight years after its debut, the ‘63 Sting Ray split-window coupe remains one of the most visceral and beautiful automobiles ever to ride four tires. With styling inspired by the 1959 Stingray race car and 1961 Mako Shark show car, the all-new 1963 Corvette coupe marked the beginning of the glory years for Corvette. That, however, is not to say it didn’t cause controversy. The split-window rear styling was a subject of debate even within the GM styling studios. Though primary designer Larry Shinoda wanted the rear-window bar, luminaries as lofty as Zora Arkus-Duntov, “the father of the Corvette,” opposed it. In the end, it made the production cut, but lasted only one year. Automotive critics and Corvette buyers objected to the feature’s restriction of rear visibility. By 1964, a more conventional rear window was installed. Today, however, the split-window coupe of 1963 is among the most coveted Corvettes. MS-57693

My Dad has always been a "car guy", and it rubbed off on me. Dad constantly talked about the black 1949 Chevrolet he purchased new from the Chevrolet car dealership in Garner, Iowa, and showed pictures of his pride and joy to anyone who would look. In 1989, I purchased a '49 Chevrolet convertible, identifical to Dad's. To this day, I drive it almost every day in the spring, summer and fall, and also enjoy showing it off, just like Dad did. Not only do we share a love of the '49 Chevy, we also share a love of selling Chevrolets. Dad bought the Chevrolet dealership in Garner in 1988, and my brother and I bought it from Dad when he retired in 2000. Happy 100th anniversary, Chevrolet! As our family proves, "Chevy Runs Deep"! Continued: THE DOZEN COOLEST CHEVROLET CARS OF ALL TIME 1964 CHEVROLET IMPALA SS CONVERTIBLE: This one’s a sentimental favorite of your humble correspondent. Back in the late ‘60s, when I attended McBride High School on North Kingshighway in St. Louis, there were two guys I knew who had awesome cars. (I can tell you, my ’59 VW was never in the running for the title “Awesome.”) One was a fellow McBride Mick, who owned a ’67 Pontiac GTO. The other was a neighborhood guy who attended Southwest High School. He had a canary-yellow ’64 Chevy Impala SS convertible. Most of my gang gave the nod to the GTO, but I always loved that Impala SS. The boxy body was marvelously clean, exhibiting no gratuitous doo-dads to imply power (its big block 409 cubic-inch V-8 was evidence enough of its power), and its retina-searing yellow paint job was just too cool for school. The blue car pictured here just doesn’t do it justice.

1965 CHEVY CORVAIR MONZA: To heck with Ralph Nader. We like the audacity behind the Corvair. With the first few imports trickling in as the 1950s wore on, Detroit realized there might be a market for small cars. While other domestic compacts were, essentially, slightly smaller versions of big cars, GM thought outside the box. The result in 1959 was revolutionary Detroit iron with a rear-mounted, air-cooled six-cylinder, a fully independent suspension, unibody construction and styling that just kept getting better every year. Alas, Nader’s 1965 book “Unsafe At Any Speed” doomed Corvair – and, it seemed, only Corvair, even though the Chevy was the subject of just the book’s first chapter! (We’re guessing nobody read beyond that.) The last Corvair model year was ‘69. Our favorite of the nameplate’s decade-long run is the ‘65 Corvair Monza pictured here. The grille-less face spoke of its unique drivetrain while its forward-leaning front-end styling and uncluttered flanks gave it a look of motion even at rest.

1969 CHEVY CAMARO: As part of Chevrolet’s 100th birthday celebration, General Motors conducted an online poll to determine “The Best Chevy of all Time.” The winner, announced in September, was the 1969 Camaro. It’s hard to argue with that result. Sixty-nine was the final model year of the first-generation Camaro, which debuted in 1967 to battle Ford’s Mustang. It was a memorable year for Camaro, for Chevrolet and for car buffs everywhere. Not only was the beautiful styling of the original Camaro still largely in evidence, but the car’s performance was second to none. A dizzying array of engines were offered, from a 155-hp I-6 to a 375-hp 396 V-8 to a race-prepped 430-hp 427 V-8. The ‘69 Camaro was so impressive it was invited to be the Indy 500 pace car, as evidenced by the Camaro shown here. And now, to its other laurels, the ’69 Camaro can add “Best Chevy of all Time.” A great car.

1970 CHEVY CHEVELLE SS: Back in the day when GM divisions were pretty much autonomous and actually saw each other as competitors, the keepers of the Chevrolet flame were not about to be outdone by Pontiac. So, as Chevy’s response to the original Pontiac GTO, 1964 saw the debut of the Chevelle SS. With a 300-hp 327 V-8, it was outclassed by the 348 hp produced by the ’64 Goat’s 389 cu.-in. V-8, but that wouldn’t last. By 1970, the Chevelle SS boasted the most powerful V-8 in classic muscle car history – a 450-hp, 454 cubic-inch thriller. The SS454’s 0-60 mph sprint was a blink over 6 seconds with a top speed of 108 miles per hour. The 1970 Chevelle SS remains one of the truly great muscle cars ever to come out of Detroit – and that’s saying something. It was a marvelous performance statement by Chevrolet.

2008 CHEVY MALIBU: This mass-production midsize family sedan may seem an odd choice to include on a list of the coolest Chevrolet cars ever, but it marked a turning point for the Bowtie brand, which at the end of the last century seemed to be focused heavily on trucks and SUVs – to the detriment of its passenger cars. (It’s notable that no Chevy from the ‘80s or ‘90s makes our Coolest Chevys list.) The all-new 2008 Malibu proved that Chevy, after slogging through the ‘90s with the Lumina and greeting the new century with the “good enough” 1997-07 Malibu, was back in the CAR business. The new Malibu – good looking, affordable and very well built – loudly proclaimed that, when it came to Chevy passenger cars, “good enough” no longer was good enough. Yep, Chevy is serious about passenger cars again, and that announcement came through loud and clear thanks to the 2008 Malibu.

2011 CHEVY VOLT: Tired of seeing Toyota wear the “technology crown” with its Prius hybrid, GM set out to claim that title for itself with the revolutionary Chevrolet Volt. Here’s a car that can run 25-50 miles on pure electric power, meaning that commuters who live within, say, 20 miles of where they work, can drive it daily to the job and charge it nightly at home and never use a drop of gasoline. At the same time, Volt boasts a backup gasoline engine that allows this “extended range electric car,” as GM calls it (we call it a hybrid), to travel cross-country, if the owner desires, just like any other automobile. When it debuted, there had never been anything like it. Still isn’t. The Chevy Volt is a marvel of engineering and a forwardthinking way to use less fossil fuels. And, unlike a pure electric car, it never induces the dreaded “range anxiety.” Dan Wiese is a freelance automotive writer. You can e-mail him at: drivingwithdan@gmail.com

THE HALF DOZEN COOLEST TRUCKS OF ALL TIMES By Dan Wiese, Automotive writer Photos courtesy of Chevrolet Motor Division

It can be argued that Chevrolet in the 1980s and ‘90s took its eye off the ball when it came to passenger cars, fi nally recovering, with notable success, upon the introduction of the marvelous 2008 Chevy Malibu. But GM’s bowtie brand never lost its way when it came to trucks. From the fi rst Model 490 Light Delivery to the current Silverado, Chevy trucks have been segment leaders in reliability, innovation and style. That’s what makes picking our half dozen favorites so tough! There have been many great Chevy trucks over the past 93 years. See if you agree that these six models are the best of an awfully good lot. 1918 CHEVY TRUCK: It was a banner year for Chevrolet. Not only did the brand become part of General Motors, but Chevy produced its first-ever truck. The Model 490 Light Delivery was based on the chassis of the successful 490 passenger car, which had been introduced as a 1916 model. The truck was offered as a “chassis cowl,” which included a four-cylinder, 22-hp engine, three-speed transmission and a hood, front fenders, grille and headlights. Inside, the dashboard, steering wheel, foot pedals and shifter were lifted right from the 490 passenger car. Buyers of the 490 chassis-cowl were expected to provide their own cab and cargo box. A beefed-up, heavier-duty one-ton version also was available. Subsequent Chevy trucks would offer more perks – like doors and a roof, fer cryin’ out loud – but, as far as Chevy trucks are concerned, this is the one that started it all. 1935 CHEVY SUBURBAN CARRYALL: In 1935, the powers that be at Chevy got an idea: combine a pickup front end with a station wagon rear end and assemble it all on a tough truck chassis. The result was the 1935 Suburban Carryall, a vehicle most folks consider the first SUV, although that term would not come into use for another half century. Featuring six-cylinder power, three rows of seats and loads of cargo versatility, the Suburban Carryall was the first family-friendly truck. The vehicle was so popular that the name “Suburban,” which up to that time had been used by every auto maker from Dodge to Studebaker, pretty much became the property of GM in the public’s mind. It did so legally 53 years later when General Motors in 1988 secured the name as a trademark after all other companies had ceased using it. GMC got a version of this vehicle in 1937, offering it under the “Suburban” name until model year 2000, when GMC’s version adopted the name Yukon XL. At Chevy, it’s still a Suburban – the longest continually running vehicle nameplate in the industry. 1948 CHEVY TRUCK: Chevy was the first truck maker to introduce an all-new pickup for the post-war era, and it was a beauty. The 1948 Advance Design pickup, which debuted in June 1947, featured a significantly larger cab than its predecessor and – in a nod to GM’s wartime production of military vehicles – a chassis that Chevy dubbed “Unisteel Battleship construction.” Big doors, lots of glass and three-across bench seating made the ’48 Chevy like no pickup that had come before. Throw in a 90-hp six, an available four-speed transmission – heady stuff in ’48 – and styling that actually showed some style (a revolutionary idea for a truck in the first half of the last century) and you can think of this one as the granddaddy of the modern pickup. In a historical footnote, this truck was the styling inspiration for Chevy’s 2003-2006 SSR fold-away hardtop convertible pickup. 1955 CHEVY CAMEO CARRIER: The ’55 Cameo Carrier was 30 years ahead of its time, anticipating by three decades the personal-use/luxury truck that would come into its own in the 1980s. No longer just for farmers and construction sites, the Cameo Carrier, as this photo shows, was a pickup designed for weekends as well as work. It was as comfortable at the opera as it was on the farm – and it didn’t have to be the Grand Old Opry, either. Sure, Cameo Carrier boasted a gross vehicle weight rating of 5,000 pounds, just like other ‘55 Chevy pickups, and it shared its cab and front sheet metal with other Chevy trucks, as well. But the Cameo just looked cooler. Its available two-tone paint job, along with its plastic rear fenders, which gave a sleek-side look, proved that pickups could make a styling statement as well as a payload promise. This was a tony, personal-use pickup before suburbia discovered what a handy and fun vehicle that could be. In other words, it was a cool pickup before pickups were cool. A 1957 model is shown. 1969 CHEVY K5-BLAZER: This bruiser was launched to compete with the International Harvester Scout and the Ford Bronco. It wound up bucking the Bronco and harvesting scads of International customers, outselling both of its rivals within a year. What a concept it was! The 1969 K5-Blazer – its “Blazer” moniker short for “trailblazer” – was a convertible vehicle on a truncated pickup platform with seating for five and standard four-wheel drive. (The two-wheel drive version didn’t arrive until 1970.) Capable of climbing a rope in the rough, this roughneck also offered such available “luxuries” as air conditioning, bucket seats and that new Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission of which GM was so proud. The 1969 K5-Blazer was rolling proof that a rugged truck could provide both notable cabin comfort and nearly unstoppable outback capability. To this day, the K-Blazer, which was discontinued after the 1994 model year when it was replaced by the Tahoe, remains a common sight at campgrounds and on 4x4 trails. 1988 CHEVY PICKUP: By 1987, Chevy’ s full-size pickup was old enough to worry about changes in Social Security. Basically the same truck that had been introduced way back in 1973, the old boy was ready to pass the baton to a younger standard bearer. Out of the bullpen came the fourth generation of the bowtie truck – the stunning 1988 C/K. (“C” identified 2WD versions, “K” was the label for 4WD iterations.) Riding an all-new platform dubbed GMT400, C/K featured cutting-edge technology, better fuel efficiency, a roomier interior, higher payload capacity, enhanced towing muscle, a smoother ride on its revised independent front suspension (now included on 4WD models, too) and slicker, more aerodynamic styling. It was a quantum leap over its hoary predecessor. The sophisticated new platform also made possible luxurious pickups for the “personal use” crowd – a new market for full-size pickups. No longer merely a commercial and farm tool, pickup trucks by 1988 were cool. And there was no pickup cooler than the 1988 Chevy. Dan Wiese is a freelance automotive writer. Where did the bowtie come from? CHEVROLET’S EMBLEM IS AN ICON OF AMERICAN ADVERTISING, BUT ITS ROOTS ARE SHROUDED IN MYSTERY Chevrolet’s bowtie emblem is one of the most widely recognized logos in the world, but where did it come from? Even General Motors isn’t quite sure. The bowtie logo was introduced by company co-founder William C. Durant in late 1913. But how it came to be synonymous with the brand is open to wide interpretation, with four versions of the story cropping up. IT CAME FROM WALLPAPER Durant’s version of how the logo came into existence is well known. The long-accepted story, confirmed by Durant himself, was that it was inspired by the wallpaper design in a Parisian hotel. According to The Chevrolet Story of 1961, an official company publication issued in celebration of Chevrolet’s 50th anniversary: “It originated in Durant’s imagination when, as a world traveler in 1908, he saw the pattern marching off into infi nity as a design on wallpaper in a French hotel. He tore off a piece of the wallpaper and kept it to show friends, with the thought that it would make a good nameplate for a car.” A DINNERTIME SKETCH In 1929, Durant’s daughter, Margery, published a book entitled, My Father. In it, she told how Durant sometimes doodled nameplate designs on pieces of paper at the dinner table. “I think it was between the soup and the fried chicken one night that he sketched out the design that is used on the Chevrolet car to this day,” she wrote. A HOTEL STAY IN VIRGINIA More than half a century later, another Bowtie origin was recounted in a 1986 issue of Chevrolet Pro Management Magazine based on a 13-year-old interview with Durant’s widow, Catherine. She recalled how she and her husband were on holiday in Hot Springs, Va., in 1912. While reading a newspaper in their hotel room, Durant spotted a design and exclaimed, “I think this would be a very good emblem for the Chevrolet.” Unfortunately, at the time, Mrs. Durant didn’t clarify what the motif was or how it was used. THE SWISS FLAG One other explanation attributes the design to a stylized version of the cross of the Swiss flag. Louis Chevrolet was born in Switzerland at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchâtel, to French parents, on Christmas Day 1878. Whichever origin is true, within a few years, the bowtie would emerge as the defi nitive Chevrolet logo. An October 2, 1913 edition of The Washington Post seems, so far, to be the earliest known example of the symbol being used to advertise the brand.

image of Louis Chevrolet appears on the B-pillars, the center caps of the wheels, and the center of the steering wheel. The seat headrests also carry an embossed centennial logo. Aficionados will note one other small detail: The historic crossed flags badge contains a small adaptation, with “100” in place of the traditional fleur-de-lis symbol, only for the Centennial Edition. INTERIOR The exterior color scheme is reinforced inside the car, with the Ebony leatherwrapped instrument panel and doors complimented by red stitching on the steering wheel, seats, console and shifter. Microfiber suede accents on Centennial Edition seats, steering wheel, shifter and armrests were first used on the 2011 Z06 Carbon Limited Edition.
