103rd Birthday

LuVerne and Susanna Vierkant Lee of Clear Lake were married Dec. 28, 1963, in Mason City. They will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner.

Gabrielle Pittenger, of Osseo, Minn., formerly of Mason City, will celebrate her 103rd birthday on December 31st.

The family hopes she’ll receive over 100 birthday cards for this special day.

Thank you Thank You Thank you to our family, friends, and neighbors for the cards, flowers, food, and prayers on dad’s passing. A special thank you to the staff of Cedar Health nursing home and to the nursing staff and doctors at Floyd County Medical Center for the excellent care you provided to dad.

Special thanks also to Sister Diana Blong, and to the Charles City Patriotic Committee who provided military honors at dad’s funeral. You each made a big difference in dad’s life and in helping us during this difficult time. We are extremely grateful.

The family of Ben Newell wishes to thank everyone who participated, donated, or helped out with the Ben Newell Memorial 5K run/walk which was held November 3 at Sugar Bottom Recreation area in North Liberty, Iowa.

Nearly 270 participants were signed up and a great day was had by all. It was a perfect fall day in a beautiful setting.

A total of $7,750 was recently distributed to the following charities: Iowa City Animal Shelter, North Liberty Food Panty and the Coralville Rec. Dept for scholarships for swim lessons.

Ben got his dog, Jethro, at the Animal Shelter, he volunteered regularly at the Food Pantry and he enjoyed teaching swim lessons over the years to kids both in Mason City and in the Iowa City area.

Ben would be very happy with the

generosity shown toward these charities.

We are completely humbled by Ben’s friends who spent countless hours organizing to make this event a success and a beautiful tribute to our son Ben.

Not willing to call it one and done, the organizers plan to make this an annual event so look for more information next summer.

DAVENPORT — Margaret Dirksen and Alex Rechkemmer were united in marriage on October 5, 2013, at Christ the King Chapel, St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, by Father Chuck Adam.

Margaret is the daughter of Michael and Jodie Dirksen of Mason City. Alex’s parents are Jack and Connie Rechkemmer of Fairbank.

Maid of honor was Rachael Dirksen. Margaret’s other attendants were Alyson Forsyth, Mandy Schares, Loni Dirksen and Gina Rechkemmer. Best Man was Tony Rechkemmer. Alex’s other attendants were Riley Dirksen, Blake Dirksen, Josh Schares and Chris Forsyth.

Margaret is employed by Orthopaedic Specialists of Quad Cities, Iowa. Alex is employed by Arsenal Fire Dept. of Rock Island, Ill. The couple will reside in Davenport, Iowa.

Rebecca Beek and Matthew Horan were married June 22, 2013, at St. Edward Catholic Church in Waterloo, Iowa, with Father Jerry Kopacek officiating the ceremony.

Rebecca is the daughter of Bill and Janelle Nuehring of Rockwell, Iowa, and Rodney Beek of Mason City, Iowa.

Her grandparents are Annabelle Grimm of Charles City, Gary and Florence Beek of Mason City, and Larry and Carolyn Nuehring of Rockwell. She is employed by the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

Matthew Horan is the son of Kevin and Karla Horan of Waterloo, Iowa, and grandson of Kathleen Hansen of Waterloo. He is employed by McGladrey in Iowa City, Iowa.

Matron of Honor was Rachel Weaver, sister of the bride. Bridesmaids were Allison Fredin, Ellen Meeker, Melanie Asbe, all friends of the couple. Best man was Loras Even, a friend of the couple. The groom’s other attendants were Andrew Hooyman, a friend of the couple, Konnor Horan, brother of the groom and Ryan Secrest, a friend of the couple.

Personal attendants were Kelly McGee, friend of the couple, Melissa Horan, sister of the groom and Katie Horan, sister of the groom. Guest book attendants were Brett Weaver, nephew of the bride, and Cheyla Weaver, niece of the bride. Flower girl was Breea Weaver, niece of the bride, and ring bearer was Cole Weaver, nephew of the bride. Ushers were Caleb Nuehring, brother of the bride, Sam Hansen, cousin of the groom, Nick Swanson, friend of the couple. Soloist was Kristian Einsweiler with pianist Dave Berns.

The reception was hosted by Matt and Holly See, cousin of the bride, and Ron and Sandy Hansen, and was held at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center.

Following a honeymoon at Rivera Maya, Mexico, the couple is at home in Iowa City.

Want to thank you for the telephone calls, flowers, gifts, the cards – each and every one has a special memory. I especially want to thank my family for the surprise birthday dinner at Prime ‘N Wine.

I also want to thank all that called to see how I was doing after I had surgery Nov. 20. I am doing great.
