rt and Nelda Tesar traded their home on North Shore Drive four years ago for a new house with lake access. Located at 40 Venetian Drive, the house is part of Venetian Estates on the west edge of Clear Lake. Nearly every room looks out on a state wildlife management area behind the single-story house. The couple had to clear a lot of brush to maximize the view. Art also built a bridge across the creek in their backyard. “It’s like living in the country,” said Art, a former Clear Lake city councilman and real estate appraiser. The house was designed to give the appearance of the inside of a log cabin. Guests walking through the front door are wowwed by the view. Glass sliding doors in the dining area provide an unobstructed view of the woods. A vaulted ceiling and generous use of wood — in the shiny hickory floor and knotty pine west wall and ceiling — complement well the open floor plan that joins the kitchen, living room and dining area into one great room. “It reminds me of a See TESAR HOME, H2

uilding a home of their own was a dream come true for Derek and Lizzan Engh of Britt. Owners of Britt Lumber Co., the couple planned their three-bedroom ranch-style home at 465 Fifth St. S.W. to showcase furnishings available at the lumberyard, said Lizzan, 25. They purchased furnishings and services locally as much as possible and hired local contractors. The Enghs also performed much of the work themselves. “We found a design that we liked and improvised on it,” Lizzan said. “We kind of made it our own.” The 2,350-square-foot house is built on 1½ lots, providing the young couple with plenty of yard. hen Jan Phelps first saw the interior of what today is her dream house, she sat down on a bed upstairs and cried. “You can’t imagine how bad it looked,” she said of the Mason City home she and her husband Jim discovered in 1973. Every room at the home at 412 Seventh St. S.E. was painted a different shade of pink. The kitchen had an old sink hanging on a wall. Flooring was outdated. But Jim liked “the arrangement of it,” he said of the two-story, fourbedroom house. “I liked the old woodwork and the yard. I could just see a lot of potential.”

With open oak spindle staircase and chair rail molding in the front entry, original oak doors with brass hardware, five-piece crown molding in the living-dining room and foyer, and oak colonnades at the entry to the living room, the house was too beautiful to pass up. Fortunately, Jim, a retired outside sales representative, was also capable of doing much of the remodeling himself. Within three months of living in it, “we felt as if we had lived here forever,” said Jan, a Mason City paraprofessional. The Phelps are the second family to own the 1905 See PHELPS HOME, H11

DREAM HOMES 2011
LEFT: The kitchen has undergone several remodelings over the years including removing a wall to enlarge it, new cabinets, countertops, refinished woodwork and a new oak floor. ABOVE: A black and cream toile comforter and matching wallpaper catch the eye in a guest bedroom. LOWER LEFT: A special “man cave” is where Jim enjoys spending time watching TV with Max, the couple’s bichon frise.
PHELPS HOME From H11 and they last forever,” said Jan. A black treadle sewing machine forms the base of their kitchen table, which has a black laminate top. A butler’s table doubles as a small, pretty bar. The elegantly appointed living-dining room is cream and white, with Victorian-inspired draperies in cream and champagne colors. An antique library table from Jim’s parents, tiered end table, secretary desk, antique custom armchair and Victorian-inspired sofa dress up the living room while conveying an air of livability, too. A prized piece in the room is a Victorian table lamp, Jan’s first antique find and a fantastic bargain. “It was on a junk pile,” she said. Dining room furnishings include a pedestal table, sideboard and mirrored buffet. A chandelier that is original to the house hangs over the table. An elegant gold-leaf framed mirror from Jan’s parents hangs above the sideboard. Jan makes good use of a lighted display cabinet from Jim’s parents in the dining room to display her

grandmother’s collection of pink Depression glass. Thirty-nine antique Frankoma plates line a wall of the dining room. Upstairs, antiques handed down from Jim’s family are featured in a guest bedroom where a painted iron bed with black and cream toile comforter and matching wallpaper catch the eye. The master bedroom is furnished with a fourposter bed with crocheted bedspread. Floral wallpaper adds a vintage touch. Another bedroom upstairs has been converted to a hobby room where Jan does her scrapbooking,
while a third bedroom is used as a cozy TV room in which the TV is concealed in an armoire. A large trunk that Jan’s grandparents used in emigrating to the United States from Norway is used as a side table. Family photos are displayed on a low rolling side table. An antique sewing machine and antique toys are also displayed in the room. The basement is the location of the laundry room, exercise equipment and furnace. A special “man cave,” a 10-by-12-foot room, is
where Jim enjoys spending time watching TV with Max, the couple’s bichon frise. The room originally housed the cistern. Over the years, Jim built an octagon-shaped back porch overlooking the yard. He laid a curving wooden sidewalk and built a double garage. He also built two small ponds that are stocked with fish and a patio and fire pit area, perfect for entertaining friends. A combination of fencing and shrubbery provide privacy. “This has been a 39year project,” said Jim, of the house today.
