The room includes a daybed so it can function as a guest room when necessary. The house also includes a “huge” amount of storage space, Victoria said. The extra bedrooms come in handy because Victoria, who shares the house with her cat, Boris, has friends who visit from other parts of the country.

“It’s a very easy house to entertain in and have guests in,” she said. The biggest remodeling change she made was in creating a master bedroom suite out of two smaller bedrooms. She added a master bathroom with tiles recalling Southwestern colors of desert sand and grays. The bathroom also features a large white-framed mirror, “wading pool” sink and heated tile floor. Retired diplomat’s home is a map of her service Hava Hegenbarth’s childhood dream house now provides an elegant showcase for her years of travel around Africa and other continents By KRISTIN BUEHNER kristin.buehner@globegazette.com

MASON CITY

ava Hegenbarth’s older Mason City home first impressed her as a young girl. “My brother and I were hired to cut the lawn for the woman who lived there,” she recalled. “I always admired the house and thought I’d like to own it someday.” Built in 1928, the elegant brick home at 503 Eighth St. S.E. was one of four brick houses built on her block by William Henkel, German immigrant, journeyman bricklayer and stonemason who founded Henkel Construction Co. in Mason City. His daughter, Leona, was living in the house when Hegenbarth knew it as a girl. In 2005, Hegenbarth, who had been living out of the country, learned the house was for sale. She arranged to purchase it over the Internet. “I bought it without ever having been inside,” she said. A diplomat with the U.S. Foreign Service for 21 years primarily serving in Africa, Hegenbarth was in Mauritius at the time. She returned to Mason City after retiring from the Foreign Service in 2006. “I liked the arched entryway, the eyebrow window over the living room and the fact that it’s brick,” she said. Carved animals — sable antelope, gorillas, guinea fowl, rhinoceros, elephant and hippopotamus — are displayed on shelves and tables. A tall giraffe peeks out from behind a potted floor plant. Other touches include a brass model of a tuareg, a nomadic tribesman of the Sahara, riding a camel; wooden camel bell; wooden hair picks; and beaded Ethiopian headdress. Mission-style lamps were chosen for the living room, with plenty of green floor plants throughout the house. Hegenbarth also added an electric fireplace with carved wooden mantle and fire surround that looks like it came with the house. A large flat bowl filled with ostrich eggs takes center stage on the dining room table. It is set off by black animal horns, one from a kudo and the other from a gemsbok, both a type of large antelope. A Masai necklace hangs over a wooden door of the dining room. Dining room side tables display an ebony giraffe from Kenya and stripwoven Kente cloth from Ghana. Framed miniature painted wooden masks from Zaire hang on the wall. A tooled camel leather chest in the dining room is one of the furnishings Hegenbarth brought back from Africa. Rustic Mission side table, hutch, curio cabinet and sideboard with marble inlay and a Tiffany lamp are used to furnish the room. The lighted curio cabinet displays Hegenbarth’s collections of African sea shells, birds nests and ndebele dolls from South Africa. Carved Ethiopian religious icons of wood and bone, a King Solomon figure carved of soapstone and woven baskets from Botswana are also displayed. Her hutch stores batik cloth napkins with a guinea fowl design. The large kitchen is furnished with oak cupboards and stone-look ceramic tile floor. Hegenbarth calls her blue and white-painted guest room the Zanzibar Room. It includes carved wooden furniture from Zanzibar, including the bureau with mirror, nightstand, Zanzibar chest and bed, over which Hegenbarth has arranged mosquito netting for added effect. The bedding is also African-inspired. Houston meets the Netherlands in Lake house Schick family home shows influences from time spent in other parts of the country and the world By KRISTIN BUEHNER kristin.buehner@globegazette.com

CLEAR LAKE

d Schick’s newly remodeled house on Clear Lake’s north shore has a long family history. Located at 1305 North Shore Drive, the house is on a lot purchased by Schick’s grandparents, Bill and Viola Nichols, in 1929. Schick’s house was built in 1966 by his parents, Ed and Bonnie Schick. “It was out of the family for 15 years,” said Schick, a retired senior executive. He served as president of BFI Europe, an environmental services company, and later as chief financial officer of Browning-Ferris Industries in Houston. He purchased the house in 2002. Plaques on a fence post and near the front door reflect strong family ties. One plaque is dedicated to the memory of his grandparents, another to his parents and the other to his wife, Maria. In his grandparents’ day there were two cottages on the site. The Nichols used one as a summer home. Father of sons Eddie, Robbie and Tommy, Schick moved back to Clear Lake with them after Maria’s death. “I became a full-time

E

father,” he said. The remodeling process began in February and was completed June 1. Dean Snyder Construction Co. of Clear Lake was the contractor. “I started out to do just the kitchen and living room and went from there,” Schick said. The house and grounds incorporate design ideas from his experiences liv-

ing in the Netherlands and in Houston, as well as his love of the environment. The Netherlands influence is evidenced in the clean lines and open spaces, especially on the main floor. Here, Schick removed a pocket door separating the kitchen from the living-dining room areas and opened it up. The change also brightSee SCHICK, Page 9

The lower level of the home is carpeted and houses the family room. The room includes a 120-year-old pool table obtained from a saloon in South Dakota, a lighted saltwater aquarium and large-screen TV. A laundry room leading to the garage features deep navy front-loading washer and dryer. The laundry room also houses the hose used in the home’s central vacuum system. BRYON HOULGRAVE/The Globe Gazette

SCHICK, from Page H8 ened up the space and provided full views of the lake throughout. His appreciation of clean lines is evidenced by the use of seamless countertops and lack of hardware on kitchen cabinets and drawers. A sauna in the lower level is an idea gleaned from homes in the Netherlands. Schick’s brick driveway was modeled after the brick driveways and walkways he saw in Europe. The driveway is made even more special with an original multi-color sailboat design that reflects his family’s love of sailing. Reflecting a trend he saw in Houston, Schick added a wrought-iron fence with Prairie-inspired design and brick posts to delineate the perimeter of the front yard. On the lake side, Schick planted a lawn to create a more residential look and built a curved brick patio and spa, with a pergola over the spa. Fountains that run continuously in the warmer months of the year were placed around the house. Indoors, white columns and overhead arch were added for interest at the front entry. The arch mirrors designs in the glass of the front double-door. The horizontal garage door is unpainted white oak with a circular design

pattern that is also repeated in the front door glass. Designed by Schick’s girlfriend, Valerie Lafrenz, the beveledglass door includes fluted glass, water glass, glacier glass and baroque glass. “You can see out, but you can’t see in,” Schick said. Valerie also designed the tray ceiling in the living room-kitchen areas. Wide, 16-foot white oak wood planks were custom-ordered for the rest of the floor. A custom stain was applied. The living room fireplace was rebuilt using stone to replace the formal white marble. The fireplace was also opened up to serve a casual sitting area off the kitchen as well. Schick’s love of nature is demonstrated throughout this carefully crafted dwelling. Earth-tone colors throughout the house were inspired by the original slate floor in the entry. A gently curving island counter in the kitchen is of Madagascar ebony. For the surface, Schick chose a seamless engineered stone. The island is underlighted with low-voltage LED lights for dramatic effect. The island is a floating design with a deeply recessed toe-kick. “All of the lighting in the house is ‘smart light-

ing,’ meaning each switch sends a wireless signal to a computer,” Schick said. “This enables scene lighting to be coordinated and managed with your preferences for scenes, times and so forth. Automatic lighting controls turn lights on and off with dusk and dawn settings.” Custom hanging light fixtures were installed over the island. For the kitchen countertops, Schick chose granite. The kitchen backsplash is made of 10inch iridescent glass tiles. Kitchen cabinets are bamboo. To eliminate hardware from kitchen cabinets and drawers, the drawers were designed to open with electric kick-outs, while cabinets open by means of a spring-release. An unusual gooseneck faucet on the sink operates by tapping it. Other touches in the kitchen are custom-made grass cloth Roman shades on the windows; a kitchen window seat with view of the lake, and a TV and entertainment center concealed in a kitchen cupboard. In the living room, Schick displays some of the original artwork he collects. Gallery lighting is used to showcase the art. The boys’ bedrooms are located on a hallway off See SCHICK, Page H13

hen a Sheffield real estate agent showed them a church as a potential home, Doug and Jessica Foreshoe just laughed. “But then as we looked around at houses, we were continually comparing them to the church,” said Jessica, a metallurgical engineer and consultant with Eaton Corp. in Belmond. A year later, the couple went back to the former Zion Methodist Church at 220 Borst St. for a serious look. The building most recently served as the location for Our Daily Bread restaurant and prior to that as a youth center — Potter’s Playhouse. Although it failed to meet two of Jessica’s specifications — it was on a corner lot and it didn’t have a garage — they were hooked. “I love the open space,” Jessica said. “I love the natural lighting. I think we looked at it as an opportunity to do what we wanted.” “The raw canvas of the building itself was good,” said Doug, an architect with Bergland & Cram in Mason City. “It’s got real good bones.” The couple thought Sheffield would be a great place to raise their daughters, Lillian, 3, and Genevieve, who was born Nov. 29. They purchased the building in 2002. Built in 1889 as Zion Evangelical Church, the wood frame building was in good shape and required little serious remodeling. The exterior had been painted yellow as a restaurant and had an appealing camel color on the walls of the massive main room — formerly the nave of the church — which they use as a living room. The room also includ-

A sunken master bathroom off the master bedroom includes decorative Italian tile on the walls and floor, which is heated. FORESHOE, from Page H10 said Doug. It has a clay tile foundation from the former Sheffield brick and tile plant. Heat is from two furnaces — one for the main floor and one for the lower level. The Foreshoes’ new house came with a piano. The couple has also added three wooden church pews, which they use for seating and display purposes in the 25-by-40foot living room. The room also features several flourishing floor plants and two trees — a rubber tree and a fica. “We inherit things because we have the space,” said Jessica. “Who has the space to let trees grow in their house?” Jessica located pretty beaded sage-colored curtains in a Penney’s catalog that fit perfectly the five double-hung, 30-inchby-8-foot windows and patio door of the living room. Ceiling fans and hanging lights in the living room came with the building. The one thing the Foreshoes did immediately was to install a shower in one of the two restrooms on the ground level floor, where a women’s and men’s restroom were once located. The other restroom was remodeled to include a vanity. The Foreshoes replaced some of the doors in the house with solid walnut, oak and cherry wood doors. They also replaced windows in the kitchen and in the lower-level family room. The do-it-yourselfers created a large carpeted master bedroom in the area that formerly housed the church altar and built a walk-in closet for the bedroom. The bedroom can be accessed by stairs at either end of the room. They created a sunken master bathroom off the bedroom in an area that

The building has been a restaurant and a youth center since last used as a church. The Foreshoes continue to work on the home, including redoing the basement after it was flooded. can open windows from this area to look into the family room. Doug has also built a separate wood-working room at the other end of the room. The Foreshoes plan to add a guest bedroom in a vacant room off the family room. Not many houses contain the features that this one does. There is a drinking fountain outside the bathrooms on the lower level; cabinets

taken from the chemistry lab of an old high school building; a restaurant-size stainless steel sink in the Foreshoe’s kitchen and a double-sink in a small room off the children’s bedroom that served as a prep area for the restaurant. (The Foreshoes use it as a baby changing station.) “I like the funness of it,” Doug said of the home. “It’s got quirky things in it.” “The longer we’re here, the more we love it,” said Jessica. ✦

The toilet has a dual flush to conserve water. Honey onyx tile is used on the walls. An easy-care travertine natural stone was chosen for the floor. Under-lighting is used under the floating counter in the bathroom. A laundry room leading to the garage is also located in this section of the house and features deep navy front-loading washer and dryer. The laundry room also houses the hose used in the home’s central vacuum system. The kitchen vacuum operates on a toe-kick system. A half-bath off the laundry room has a floating cabinet with under-light-

ing, granite counter top, honey onyx wall tiles and travertine tile floor. Schick’s office, located off the laundry room, houses a motion-detector security system. “The camera system allows me to view the home over the Internet when out of town,” he said. The lower level of the home is carpeted and houses the family room. The room includes a 120year-old pool table obtained from a saloon in South Dakota, a lighted saltwater aquarium and large-screen TV. Other features are a wet bar and brick fireplace. A weight room off the family room includes fitness equipment, a view of the lake and a Wall of Fame with photos of the boys. The wooden sauna is off the weight room. A large bathroom near the sauna has a walk-in shower. The master bedroom and bathroom are also located on the lower level.
