think we’ll be improved.” Leading the returners are two North Iowa Conference All Conference honorable mention athletes, senior Trevor Nalan and sophomore Jordan Weiland. Nalan led the Eagles with 24 tackles, 32 assists
and two interceptions. Weiland was among the team leaders on offense and defense. He had 33 tackles, 17 assists and one sack on defense. The underclassman rushed for just under 500 yards on 124 carries and scored six touchdowns.
Other statistic leaders include junior quarterback Connor Sonius, who completed 29 of 84 passes for 376 yards. He had one touchdown pass and five interceptions.

GARNER – With four key runners returning from last year’s team, the Garner-Hayfield-VenturaWest Hancock girls cross country team is optimistic as the 2014 season starts. First year head coach Erik Jolivette, who replaces long time coach Jeff Short, says he is pleased with the condition of the 20 girls that have reported for workouts. During the off season, West Hancock school and the Garner-HayfieldVentura school officials had a lengthy discussion and agreed to extend the cross country agreement. Five girls and no boys from West Hancock High School will be running for the team this year. Jolivette said top returners from last year’s team are Maria Gonzalez, Tiara VanGerpen,

“Maria has come back in great shape,” said Jolivette. “She is in the best running shape I have seen her.” Zamago meanwhile has not yet reported as she spent the summer in National Guard basic training. “We expect that she will be in good shape after basic training,” said the first year coach. VanGerpen is recovering from an injury, but Jolivette anticipates an early season return. Other West Hancock girls participating on the team include Arley Ramero, Kaylee Hudspeth and Delores Gonzalez. “There is going to be a lot of good cross country teams in North Iowa,” said Jolivette. “Osage is going to be one of the better teams in the North Iowa Conference.” The team opens its season Tuesday, Sept. 2 at the Newman Cross Country Meet in Mason City.

This school has a good tradition that was shaped years and years ago. This group is very dedicated, hard working and have faced adversity.” That said, Hedrington say he’s looking for more. “We need to improve in all aspects of the game.” Looking at the district, Hedrington says, “Every team in our
