ANNIVERSARIES Cal Braastad, 90 years, Braastad 45th anniversary Calvin (Cal) Braastad celebrates 90 years! He was born July 7, 1924, in South Dakota. During WWII he served on the destroyer, USS Taylor. The USS Taylor was at Subic Bay in the Pacific, then chosen as the escort for the USS Missouri during the signing of the peace treaty in Tokyo Bay. Cal and his wife, Carolyn (Curtis), along with family and friends, also celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. They were married in South Dakota June 12, 1969. Their six children from Texas, Massachusetts, Utah, South Dakota and Minnesota were here, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE A Celebration of Life for Arthur M. Fischbeck (Art) will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. in The Music Man Square for family, friends and the community. Art passed away peacefully on January 28 after living in Mason City his entire life. He was well respected as a North Iowa businessman, lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church, an archivist/historian at the Mason City Public Library. He was also active in the community serving on various board and committees as well as being a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Art was proud to be designated as “Mason City’s Unofficial Historian.”

Conservation Foundation Art Contest winners FOREST CITY — This past spring, the Friends of Winnebago County Conservation Foundation sponsored their first Student Art Contest for students in Winnebago County. The contest was open to all students in grades K-12 and focused on what the students like to do outdoors. Approximately 100 students entered posters in the competition. Tori Knight, a fourthgrader from North Iowa took first place in the elementary division, while Aaron Cook and Jennifer Lopez, both North Iowa first-graders, took second and third respectively. The middle school division was won by Autumn Thayer, while Hunter Meinders and Sierra Billick placed second and third. All three students were sixth-graders at North Iowa Middle School. Winning the high school division was Nick Price of North Iowa High School. Caitlyn Owen of Forest City High School placed second, while Jed Ree of North Iowa finished third. All three students were ninth-graders.
