Award & Achievement Students receive Athlete Achievement Awards JOHNSTON — Four Iowa high school students received the 2014 Iowa Bankers Association’s Student Athlete Achievement Award, during the Iowa High School Boys State Basketball Tournament, March 14-15 in Des Moines. One student from each class received a $1,000 scholarship from the Iowa Bankers Association to the college of his choice. Scholarship recipients were selected based on their academic performance, athletic participation, leadership skills and community involvement. Scholarship recipients include:

CLEAR LAKE — Libbey Allen Wood, formerly of Clear Lake, was nominated Special Education Teacher of the Year for the Humboldt Unified School District. Each of the district’s nine schools honored one teacher, and one special education teacher. The Rotary Club of Prescott Valley, Ariz., held its 15th annual banquet awards ceremony in February. Wood is a special education teacher at Bright Futures Preschool in Prescott Valley, located in north central Arizona. She earned her nomination from a 3-year-old student (name and photo withheld) who submitted the following letter: “I like Ms. Libbey big much because she helps me learn the ‘K’ letter, and Ms. Libbey tells me to sit crisscross and listen to her. Ms. Libbey does not yell, and gives me hugs when I am scared … She is funny and likes to look at bugs, me like that.
Wilderman receives MFCP Scholarship IOWA CITY — Midwest Free Community Papers (MFCP) announced Ryne Wilderman is the 2014 recipient of the Kay Fox College Scholarship. She is attending Iowa State University, pursuing a degree in animal science. The Kay Fox College Scholarship is awarded by MFCP to a student who has a parent or guardian working for one of the 120 member papers serving the Midwest. Wilderman’s father, Greg Wilderman, works for the Mason City Shopper/Globe Gazette in Mason City. The scholarship is for $500 a year, up to four years, toward the completion of Ryne Wilderman’s undergraduate studies.

MASON CITY — Sommer Pedersen, 7, daughter of Cathy Brandt, of Mason City, was chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Iowa pageant to be held May 3-4, at the Ramada Hotel in Waterloo. The National American Miss pageants are held for girls ages 4-18, and have five different age divisions. Pedersen will be participating in the Junior-Preteen 7-9 age division, along with other young ladies from across the state. The winner of the pageant will receive a $1,000 cash award, the official crown and banner, a bouquet of roses, and air transportation to compete in the national pageant in California, where she will receive a complimentary tour of Hollywood and two VIP tickets to Disneyland.
Basin Electric Power Cooperative Scholarships HAMPTON — The Franklin Rural Electric Cooperative (REC) announced its Basin Electric Power Cooperative scholarship winners. A $1,000 Basin Electric Power Cooperative scholarship was awarded to Ethan Meints, a student at West Fork High School. He is the son of Pam and Daren Meints. Franklin REC also awarded a $250 runner-up scholarship for the Basin Electric Power Cooperative scholarship to Karter Miller. She is a student at CAL High School, Latimer, and is the daughter of Marsha Miller and the late Therron Miller. Applicants must be a dependent child of a member cooperative consumer. Both scholarships awarded are based on academic excellence, work experience, and school and community activities.

Thank you to Fr. Allers for the beautiful church service and words spoken in honoring our loved one, the church choir for the beautiful hymns sung, and for the ladies of the church who prepared and served a wonderful meal.
