Sunrise Rotary Club Basketball Tournament UNI Dean’s List On Feb. 16, 2013, Mason City Sunrise Rotary Club held its 11th annual Basketball Tournament for fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade boys and girls basketball teams. The tournament, held in the NIACC Recreation Center, was very successful, providing a competitive environment for the teams. Those helping the Rotary Club make this a successful event were our sponsors, and the NIACC Athletic and Maintenance Departments, which provided referees for the games and set up the Center for our use.

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS Hard Work and Guts Equal Glory for Wrestlers of Sebolt Wrestling Academy at AAU State

SWA wrestlers once again gave proof that hard work, quality technique, and determination is a winning combination to reach the top as they competed in the Iowa AAU state tournament Feb. 23-24, in Des Moines, Iowa.

Eight members of Sebolt Wrestling Academy climbed the podium steps to receive medals. Cullan Schriever, Eric Faught, and Matthew Lewis brought home the Championship Gold. Kayden Kauzlarich and Sage Walker each donned third-place finishes, while teammates Gabe Ruepke finished fifth and Zach Percy and Gabe Lewis received eighth-place medals.

Neneman receives honors at Southern Illinois University EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — Danielle Neneman, was named to the Dean’s List for the 2012 fall semester at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, Ill. She had a 3.8 grade point average.

American Miss Iowa Pageant finalist MASON CITY — Kaitlyn Marie Adams, 15, of Mason City, was chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Iowa Pageant, to be held April 13-14, at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center, Waterloo. She is the daughter of Joe and Melissa Adams, of Mason City.

The National American Miss pageants are held for girls ages 4-18, and have five different age divisions.

Adams will participate in the junior teen (13-15) age division.

The winner of the pageant will receive a $1,000 cash award, the official crown and banner, a bouquet of roses, and air transportation to compete in the national pageant in California.

Lang to receive Eagle Scout Award

Maroo named ‘Student of the Month’

On March 16, 2013, an Eagle Scout Court of Honor has been scheduled for Scout Andrew Lang.

Andrew is a member of Osage Boy Scout Troop 1062.

Andrew joined Cub Scout Pack 4068 in August of 2004, as a first grader. He then crossed over to Boy Scouts in March of 2009, and has been active in Scouting since.

Andrew has earned 36 merit badges to date which include the 21 that were required to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout.

Andrew’s service project benefited the Osage Conservation Club at their outdoor shooting range, located on Spring Park Road. There were several parts to the project which included: repair and replacement of two separate backstops, reinforcement of the overhead baffles, rebuilding the west fence, repair of the other three fences and a gate.

Andrew himself logged 59 hours planning, organizing, and supervising the many volunteers who provided an additional 228 hours of labor toward the completion of this project for a project total of 287 volunteer hours.

She is the daughter of Dale and DeAnne Maroo.

Maroo is Maroo a two-year varsity letter winner in volleyball and a two-year varsity letter winner in winter cheerleading. She also was involved in choir for two years.

She participates with the Silver Cord Program and is involved with the Best Buddies Program. She has maintained a 4.0 grade point average through her high school years.

Eagle Scout at his Board of Review on Oct. 2, 2012, at the age of 14. His Board of Review was conducted by several adult leaders in the Twin Rivers District of Winnebago Council.

The year 2012 is a landmark year for Eagle Scouts all across America as this celebrates the 100th anniversary of the first Eagle Scout. The rank of Eagle Scout has been earned by more than two million young men since then. The title of Eagle Scout is held for life, thus giving rise to the phrase “Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.”

IOWA CITY — The name of Ashley Ann Willms, of Clear Lake, should have been included on the University of Iowa 2012 fall Dean’s List, published in Celebrations, March 3.

Loras College Dean’s List DUBUQUE — Loras College announced the names of students who achieved Dean’s List status for the 2012 fall semester. Charlene G. Becicka, of Charles City, and Rachel E. Henrich, of Mason City, were named to the Dean’s List.

A student must earn a 3.5 grade point average and carry a minimum of 12 credit hours to be recognized.

Maroo received the Central Iowa Metropolitan League All Academic Award for volleyball and winter cheerleading. She was given the Central Iowa Metropolitan League Honorable Mention Player for volleyball, her senior year.

Her community activities include attending Trinity Lutheran Church where she had gone on mission trips. She has also volunteered to help with the youth volleyball programs.

Maroo works at Vanity and Hollywood Tan. She plans to attend Upper Iowa University and possibly study business.

It was a cold and snowy day on March 18, 1923, when Adola Hebrank was born into this world in St. Paul, Minn. The daughter of Clarence Maynard Hebrank and Maud Melissa Reynolds Hebrank, Adola joined her older sister, Melva E. Hebrank, making a family of four. The family moved to Mason City in 1927, where Adola grew up.
