Esther Dorenkamp was born March 3, 1921, in Belmond.

O’Shea, Frein to wed in April

Frein, Stoos wed May 5

Paul and Cynthia O’Shea of Garner announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Kayla O’Shea to Ben Frein. Ben is the son of Brad and Shelly Frein of Garner.

Kayla lives in Urbandale, Iowa, and is a graduate of Garner-Hayfield High School and Allen College. She is employed as a Radiology Technician at the Methodist Hospital in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Ben is a graduate of Garner-Hayfield High School and the University of Northern Iowa. Ben is self employed in an e-commerce business and owns and manages multiple commercial properties in the Des Moines area.

The couple will be married April 27, 2013, at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines.

Kacie Frein and Cody Stoos were married May 5, 2012.

The ceremony was held at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. A reception and dance followed at the Best Western Holiday Lodge in Clear Lake.

Kacie is the daughter of Brad and Shelly Frein of Garner. Cody’s parents are Steve Stoos and Kim Mahrt of LeMars, Iowa.

Matron of Honor was Kayli Ytzen. The bridesmaids were Kayla O’Shea, Shelby Beran, Emma Schleusner, Jen Davis and Brandi Hanson. Flower girl was Amelia Ytzen.

Best man was Nick Hanna. The groomsmen were Ben Frein, Levi Mahrt, Brady Juhl, Kyle Stoos and Codie Fetters. Ring bearer was Logan Stoos.

Kacie is a dental hygienist for Drs. Brenden & Brenden and Dr. Stickrod in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area. Cody is employed at John Deere in Waterloo.

After a honeymoon to the Dominican Republic the couple has made their home in Janesville, Iowa.

She is a 2002 graduate of Mason City High School and a 2008 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa. She is employed by the West Des Moines Community School District, teaching at Western Hills Elementary.

NICK WILLENBORG, of West Des Moines, is the son of Lynn Willenborg of Denison, Iowa, and Sue Willenborg of West Des Moines. He is a 1999 graduate of Carroll High School, Carroll, Iowa. He is the owner of Electrical Plus and is working in the Des Moines area.

The couple will be married July 6, 2013, at the Saint Mark Lutheran Church in West Des Moines.

BRITTANIE BARNETT, of Denver, Iowa, is the daughter of Rich and Beth Barnett of Annandale, N.J. Brittanie graduated from Wartburg College in 2010, and is a fifth grade teacher at Denver Community School District in Denver, Iowa.

REESE GRAFFT, of Avoca, Iowa, is the son of Ross and Ann Grafft of Osage, Iowa. Reese graduated from Wartburg College in 2010, and is a fourth grade teacher and coach at AHST Community School in Avoca, Iowa.

The couple will be married at 4 p.m. on Friday, July 5, 2013, at Orchard Hill Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

ANNIVERSARY Married 63 Years Robert and Lorraine Kappedal Phillips were married on March 4, 1950, in Pipestone, Minn. AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS Selected for Northern Festival of Bands ALGONA — Seven members of the Algona High School Band were selected to participate in the Northern Festival of Bands held Feb. 7-9, at the University of Northern Iowa .

These musicians were selected for membership in one of the two festival honor bands through their individual performance resumes.

Selected for membership in the 11-12 grade Symphony Band were Kevin Blaha-Polson, trumpet, and Matt Stein, tuba. Selected for membership in the 9-10 grade Concert Band were: Adam Denner, tuba; Peter Jorgenson, alto saxophone; Maddie Roach, bassoon; Emma Schmidt, clarinet, and David Shellabarger, trombone.

Students began the festival with chair auditions and a rehearsal on the evening of Thursday, Feb. 7. The festival continued with numerous rehearsals along with performances and master classes by UNI School of Music faculty and students. While at the festival, the students had the opportunity to attend a concert by the UNI Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band on Friday evening. The festival concluded with a concert performance by the festival bands on Saturday, Feb. 9, in the Bengston Auditorium of UNI’s Russell Hall.

Waldorf College Salveson Prize winners FOREST CITY — Waldorf College announced the winners of the 2012-13 Salveson Prizes in Poetry and Prose. The prizes, named after Waldorf College’s founder, honor outstanding poems and exceptional pieces of prose with a monetary award, and publication in Waldorf’s literary journal, Crusader.

The Salveson Prize winner in poetry was Marisa Donnelly, of Naperville, Ill., for her piece, “Reasons Why I Love My Mother.” Honorable mentions in poetry include Kaylin Tlam, Dunnell, Minn., and April DeVries-Cal teux, Albert Lea, Minn. The prize for prose went to Barb Lange, Garner, for her piece, “Facing the Music.” Honorable mentions in prose include Marisa Donnelly, Naperville, Ill., and Tori Lagel, of Sumner.

All contest decisions are made by outside judges, who are esteemed writers and teachers.
