Blue Ribbon winners in Personal Development OSAGE — Personal Development projects were judged on Tuesday, July 29. Projects in the Personal Development department include Citizenship, Communication, Leadership, and SelfDetermined. Personal Development and 4-H Poster projects were judged by Becky Meyer, Charles City; Carol Peterson, Garner; and Barb McGregor, Nashua,

OSAGE — On Wednesday, July 30, 53 Clover Kid members brought their exhibits for conference judging and display in the 4-H building. Judges were Brenda Johanns, Rick Sletten, and Audrey Christensen, all of Osage. Clover Kids is a program for kindergarten through third grade students in Mitchell County to learn about 4-H and develop their interest in the program. State trips earned in Communications OSAGE — 4-H Educational Presentations and Working Exhibits were presented on Saturday, Aug. 2, in the 4-H Building on the fairgrounds. Becky Meyer and Donnella Darrington, of Charles City, judged the 4-Hers on Tuesday, July 22. Four Working Exhibits were chosen to advance to the Iowa State Fair: “Pinecone Bird Feeders” by Alexandra Byrnes and Julia Bobinet of Osage; “I Spy Sand Bottles” by Corin Johanns and Sammi Scharper of Osage; “DIY Envelopes” by Laura Miller and Kayla Uthe of Osage; “Marshmallow Shooters” by Julia Klaes of Riceville and Kaylee Klaes of Osage. Receiving blue ribbons were: “Paper Plane Launchers” by Logan Rysavy of St. Ansgar was awarded a Super Blue Ribbon. OSAGE — Fair-goers were entertained on Friday evening, Aug. 1, by 4-H members at the annual Share-TheFun event. Elaine Poppinga, Charles City, and Donella Darrington, Decorah, judged the 4-Hers. The Mitchell County 4-H Clover Kids performed the ABC dance led by Emily Sullivan and Amber Schwarting to open the show. Cross wins $15 clothing challenge OSAGE — Seven Mitchell County 4-Hers entered the $15 Clothing Challenge at the 2014 Mitchell County Fair. The exhibitors modeled their outfits and were judged on July 24, by Sue McDonnell of Charles City. They were also part of the clothing Style Show at the fair on Friday, Aug. 1. Participants were asked to purchase an outfit that represents their goal or intended use for the selected outfit and not spend more than $15. Outfits could be purchased from a garage sale, consignment store or resale shop, but not from a regular retail store. Hannah Cross, Riceville, was chosen Top Senior and received the 2014 State

OSAGE — Projects entered in the animals department were judged on Tuesday, July 29, by Val Plagge of Latimer. This department includes an exhibit (other than the animal itself) that shows learning about a large or small animal and exhibits that show learning about keeping animals healthy. OSAGE — Kylie Juenger, Stacyville, exhibited the Grand Champion Market Beef at the 2014 Mitchell County Beef Show. The Grand Champion was a 1,266-pound market steer. Kaleb Jakel, Osage, exhibited the Reserve Champion Market Animal. The Reserve Champion Market beef animal was a 1,282-pound market steer. The Champion and Reserve Champion Market Beef trophies were provided by Farmers Feed and Grain. The Champion Market Heifer was exhibited by Kaleb Jakel. This trophy was provided by Tim and Joe Johnson, Carpenter. The Reserve Champion Market Heifer was exhibited by Emmi Taets, Osage. A total of 38 steers, two dairy beef, and five market heifers were entered in the competition this year. Tyler Stutsman, Hills, Iowa, was the official judge of the Market Beef Show. Third place Overall Market Animal was shown by Kaleb Jakel. Fourth place Overall Market Animal was shown by Kylie Juenger. Fifth place Overall

OSAGE — Ralee Kruse, Rudd, exhibited the Supreme Champion Breeding Heifer at the 2014 Mitchell County 4-H/FFA Beef show held on Friday, Aug. 1. Farmer’s Mutual Insurance, provided this trophy. Reserve Champion Breeding Heifer was shown by Ben Weis, McIntire. There were 46 breeding heifers entered in this year’s show. The Champion Purebred Shorthorn Heifer and the Reserve Champion Purebred Shorthorn Heifer were shown by Kaleb Jakel, and Kyle Jakel, of Osage. Berg’s Stock and Grain provided the trophy. The Champion Angus Breeding Heifer was shown by Ralee Kruse. The trophy was provided by Kruse Angus Farms. Roni Kruse, Rudd, showed the Reserve Champion Angus Breeding Heifer. OSAGE — The top rate of gain in the Sheep show was .95 pounds per day exhibited by Joe Sullivan, Osage. The rate of gain is based on a feeding period beginning at weigh-in on May 10, 2014 and ending on entry day of the County Fair. In the Rate of Gain contest the “Top Five” Rate of Gain Market sheep exhibitors were presented in a special show before the judging. Exhibitors were Riley Witt, Osage, Brady Tetzner, Riceville; Ben Miller, Osage; Landon Johnson, Carpenter. These five exhibitors received cash awards. Sponsoring the cash awards were: Andy and Abbie Johnson (2), Osage Veterinary Clinic (2), and the Don Counsell family.

OSAGE — The Mitchell County 4-H Horse Show was held on Wednesday, July 30, and Thursday, July 31, with 22 young people entered. Emily Orvella, of Decorah, was the judge for this large horse show held in the Horse Arena. Julianna Sauve, Osage, won the Senior Performance Trophy for having the most points in the Performance classes for a senior. Hannah Sauve, Osage, won the Intermediate Performance trophy for having the most points in the Performance classes for an intermediate. Mia Knudsen, Osage, won the Junior Performance trophy for having the most points in the Performance classes for a junior. Kyle Jakel, Osage, won the Senior Game Trophy for having the most points in the Game classes for a senior. Molly Jenkins, Little Cedar, won the Intermediate Game trophy for having the most points in the Game classes for an intermediate. Emma Klapperich, Osage, winning the Junior Game trophy for having the most points in the Game classes as juniors. Kyle Jakel, Osage, won the High Points Overall Trophy for the seniors. Dairy trophies awarded at the County Fair OSAGE — Eleven exhibitors brought eight dairy heifers and six dairy goats to the Mitchell County Fair. The Dairy Show was judged by Scott Ellinghuysen, Altura, Minn. Erik Gerdts, Saint Ansgar, received a purple ribbon for his Champion twoyear-old Ayrshire Cow. The Champion trophy was provided by Prairie State/ Select Sire. Aaron Gerdts, Saint Ansgar; and Madeline Brumm, Caleb Brumm, and Nathan Brumm, all of Stacyville; and Rayven Young, Osage, received blue ribbons. Aaron Gerdts, was Champion Senior Dairy Showman. Champion Junior Dairy Showman was Erik Gerdts. Madeline Brumm was Reserve Champion Junior Dairy Showman. The Champion Showman trophy was provided by Carlson Wholesale & Meitner Dairy. Champion Goat Showman was Emma Retterath of Stacyville and Reserve Champion Showman was Garrison Gerdts of Osage. Garrison Gerdts, Osage, exhibited the Madeline Brumm, Reserve Champion Junior Dairy Showman Champion Dairy Goat. The Champion Dairy Goat trophy was provided by the Osage Cooperative Elevator. OSAGE — Twenty exhibitors entered 60 birds in the 2014 Mitchell County 4-H/FFA Poultry show. Lowell Eichenberger, of Lakota, served as the official judge for the show.
