OSAGE — On Wednesday, Aug. 3, Clover Kid members brought their exhibits for conference judging and display in the 4-H building. Judges were, Audrey Christensen, Brenda Johanns, and Rick Sletten, all of Osage. Clover Kids is a program for kindergarten through third grade students in Mitchell County to learn about 4-H and develop their interest in the program. Blue ribbon winners in family and consumer science
OSAGE — Exhibits in the Family and Consumer Science project area include: Child Development, Clothing and Fashion, Food & Nutrition, Challenge Class, Health, Home Improvement, Sewing and Needle Arts, Consumer Management and Other Family and Consumer Science, all of which were conference judged on Tuesday, Aug. 2, in the 4-H exhibit building on the fairgrounds. Huisman shows Champion Derby Barrow OSAGE — Brecken Huisman, of Osage, exhibited the Champion Derby Barrow on Scanned Data at the Mitchell County Junior Show. The placing was based upon “lean gain per day” determined by carcass cutout data. There were a total of 23 barrows entered in the 2016 show. Ultrasound was used to measure carcass characteristics. Brecken’s champion barrow had an average daily gain (ADG) of 2.21 lbs. per day on feed and scanned a backfat thickness (BFT) of .67 inches, loin muscle area (LMA) of 10.29 square inches, and a Lean Gain/Day (LGD) of 1.0053 pounds. Brecken Huisman showed the Champion Derby Barrow Live. The Champion Derby Barrow trophies were given by the Mitchell County. Pork Producers. Olivia Huisman, of Osage, exhibited the Reserve Champion Derby Barrow on Scanned Data. Kaleb Jakel, of Osage, exhibited the Reserve Champion Derby Barrow Live.

Kock wins $15 Clothing Challenge OSAGE — Eight Mitchell County 4-H’ers entered the $15 Clothing Challenge at the Mitchell County Fair. The exhibitors modeled their outfits and were judged by Sue McDonnell. They were also part of the clothing Style Show at the fair on Friday, Aug. 5. Participants were asked to purchase an outfit that represents their goal or intended use for the selected outfit and not spend more than $15. Outfits could be purchased from a garage
sale, consignment store or resale shop, but not from a regular retail store. Hannah Koch, of Osage, was chosen Top Intermediate and received a purple ribbon. Natalie Bork, of St. Ansgar, was chosen Top Junior and received a blue ribbon. Also receiving blue ribbons were Lauren Bork, Maddie Bruesewitz, Emma Hall, Katelyn Johnston, Bailey Nasstrom and Rayven Young.

4-H Clubs wins Herdsmanship awards OSAGE — Herdsmanship awards were earned by several 4-H clubs and FFA chapters at the 2016 Mitchell County Fair. Award winners were determined by total points earned over the three days of the fair. The superintendents of each department judged for the Herdsmanship awards.
Osage Warhawks were the winners of the Beef Herdsmanship contest. West Lincoln Blues placed second and the Rocky Ramblers placed third. Mitchell County Mighty Members won first place in the Sheep Herdsmanship contest. Osage FFA placed second and the Stacyville
Shooting Stars placed third. Winners of the Swine Herdsmanship contest were the Osage Warhawks. The Mitchell Co. Mighty Members placed second and Stacyville Shooting Stars placed third. Stacyville Shooting Stars won first place in the Dairy Herdsman-
ship contest. Osage FFA placed second and Washington Warriors placed third. Some of the factors used to determine points were; how clean alleys and pen areas were; if exhibitors were by the pens to answer questions; if spectators could walk the alley comfortably;
the quality and amount of decorations in the barn; and if ribbons won were displayed. First-place winners in each livestock division get first choice of pens at the 2017 fair. In addition, premium dollars are as follows: first place $10, second place $6, and third place $4.
Meier and his dog, Tru Vu Roland, win Best in Show OSAGE — The 4-H Dog Show at the Mitchell County Fair was held on Saturday, Aug. 6. Overall Best in Show was won by Josiah Meier, of Osage, and his dog, Tru Vu Roland. Senior Best Handler was won by Sammi Scharper, of Osage, and her dog, Mac. Junior Best Handler was won by Nathan Brumm, of Stacyville, and his dog, Gus. Winner of the timed agility course was, Sammi Scharper, and her dog, Mac, with a course time of 24.06 seconds. Gabe Mueller, of Riceville, and his dog, Zoey, placed second in the timed agility course with a time of 24.87 seconds. Purple ribbon winners were: Shelly Brumm, Josiah Meier, Sammi Scharper, of Osage; Gabe Mueller, Riceville; Nathan Brumm, of Stacyville. Blue ribbon winners were:

2016 4-H FFA poultry show returns to fair OSAGE — Thirteen exhibitors entered 48 birds in the 2016 Mitchell County 4-H/FFA Poultry show revitalizing an old project area. Dwayne Miller, of Charles City, served as the official judge for the show. Champion and Reserve Champions were named in the following classes: Production Hens Champion: Victoria Schwarting, Osage Reserve Champion: Gabrielle Schwarting, Osage Market Poultry Champion: Courtney Tusler, Osage Fancy Breeding Stock Champion: Alexandria Franzen, Riceville

OSAGE — The top rate of gain in the Market Beef show was 5.07 pounds per day exhibited by Derek Fox, of Osage. There were 42 entries in the show this year. The rate of gain is based on a feeding period beginning at weigh-in and ending on entry day of the County Fair. Purple ribbons were awarded to other beef entries for having a rate of gain equal to or exceeding
3.25 pounds per day. “Top Ten” Rate of Gain Market Beef exhibitors were presented in a special show before the judging. Exhibitors, in addition were: Hannah Koch, of Osage; Adam Koch, of Osage; Garrison Gerdts, of Osage; Tyler Sprung, of Riceville; Hanna Zuehl, of St. Ansgar; Seth Fox, of Elma; Sam Juenger, of Stacyville; Michael Uthe, of Osage, and Lee Fox, of Elma.
Terry Kruse, Dennis Riley, Willie Weis and Dean Sponheim, beef superintendents, secured the following sponsors for the special premium awarded to these exhibitors: The Top Rate of Gain trophy was provided by Bechtum Angus. There were blue ribbons awarded for rates of gain of 2.6 to 3.24 pounds per day. Red ribbons were awarded for rates of gain from 2.0 to 2.59 pounds per day.

OSAGE — Maci Juenger, of Stacyville, exhibited the Grand Champion Market Beef at the 2016 Mitchell County Beef show. Kylie Juenger, of Stacyville, exhibited the Reserve Champion Market Animal. The Grand Champion was a 1,324 pound market steer. The Reserve Champion Market beef animal was a 1,284 pound market steer. The Champion and Reserve Champion Market Beef trophies were provided by Farmers Feed & Grain. The Champion Market Heifer was exhibited by Joe Sullivan, of Osage. This trophy was provided by Tim and Joe Johnson. The Reserve Champion Market Heifer was exhibited by Kayla Uthe, of Osage. Harrison Frey was the official judge of the Market Beef Show. Morische wins Sheep Show Rate of Gain The top rate of gain in the Sheep show was 1.09 pounds per day exhibited by Andrew Morische, of Riceville. The rate of gain is based on a feeding period beginning at weigh-in on May 7th and ending on entry day of the County Fair. In the Rate of Gain contest the “Top Five” Rate of Gain Market sheep exhibitors were presented in a special show before the judging. Exhibitors were Andrew Morische, Chad Eastman, Olivia Huisman, Kaleb Jakel, and Brecken Huisman. These five exhibitors received cash awards. Sponsoring the cash awards were the Don Counsell family, Andy & Abbie Johnson, and Osage Veterinary Clinic, P.C.

Smith shows Champion Derby Gilt OSAGE — Niklas Smith, of Osage exhibited the Champion Derby Gilt on scanned data at the Mitchell County Junior Show. The placing was based upon “lean gain per day” determined by carcass cutout data. There were a total of 18 gilts entered in the 2016 Derby Gilt show. Ultrasound was used to measure carcass characteristics. Niklas’ champion gilt had an average daily gain (ADG) of 2.09 pounds per day on feed and scanned
a backfat thickness (BFT) of .67 inches, loin muscle area (LMA) of 10.18 square inches, and a Lean Gain/Day (LGD) of .9842 pounds. Connor Mehmen, of Osage, showed the Champion Derby Gilt Live. The Champion Derby Gilt trophies were given by the Mitchell Co. Pork Producers. Connor Mehmen exhibited the Reserve Champion Derby Gilt on scanned data. Niklas Smith showed the Reserve Champion Derby Gilt Live.
Brigham wins Feeder Calf Division title SAGE — This year the O Feeder Calf Division in the 2016 Mitchell County Beef Show took place on Friday, Aug. 5. Parker Brigham, of St. Ansgar, exhibited the Grand Champion Prospect Steer. Mady Dohlman, of Chester, exhibited the Reserve Champion Prospect Steer. 4-H’ers win horse trophies OSAGE — The Mitchell County 4-H Horse Show was held on Wednesday, and Thursday, Aug. 3 and 4, with 29 young people entered. Kathy Krukow, was the judge for this large horse show held in the Horse Arena. Elizabeth Jenkins, of Osage, won the Senior Performance Trophy for having the most points in the Performance classes for a senior. Madisen Fangman, of New Hampton, won the Intermediate Performance trophy for having the most points in the Performance classes for an intermediate. Jolene Leutink, of Floyd, and Maddisen Mausehund, of Osage, won the Junior Performance trophy for having the most points in the Performance classes for a junior. Hannah Sauve, of Osage, won
the Senior Game Trophy for having the most points in the Game classes for a senior. Kourtney Chambers, of Orchard, won the Intermediate Game trophy for having the most points in the Game classes for an intermediate. Maddisen Mausehund won the Junior Game trophy for having the most points in the Game classes as juniors. Elizabeth Jenkins won the High Points Overall Trophy in the Senior Division. Molly Jenkins, of Osage, won the High Points Overall Trophy in the Intermediate Division. Maddisen Mausehund won the High Points Overall trophy in the Junior division.
