Jaylin Nuehring Mercy Nutrition Services

Mario Hughes Project SEARCH students at Mercy Medical CenterNorth Iowa have a unique opportunity to learn and practice job skills and determine their interests. A Class of 2013 graduate, Jaylin Nuehring found her calling. “I got to try working in three different departments, and Nutrition Services was my favorite. I knew that I wanted to work there. When there was a job open, my job coach Janelle encouraged me to apply for it.” Jaylin was hired shortly after graduating from high school. “Since I already knew lots of the jobs from Project SEARCH, it was easy for me to learn. Every day, I wash pots and pans and unload the dish machine. I have to put everything away so it’s ready for the next shift.” Jaylin is looking to the future in her position, as well. “I want to learn new jobs in Nutrition Services. I want to help deliver carts so I can work with the patients.” Nutrition Services Director Steve Achord is enthusiastic about Project SEARCH’s contribution to his department. “When someone asks me about Project SEARCH, my reply is simply, it’s a great partnership and we are extremely happy with the results. In the short time students are in our department, we can see each of them grow, especially in their confidence level and enthusiasm as they learn new skills and interact with our employees and with our customers. One thing I am most proud of is being able to hire two former Project Search students and integrate them into our team on a permanent basis. Their strong work ethic and contributions to Nutrition Services makes us stronger and we look forward to seeing the program grow within our department.” Patient services manager Margie Arispe agrees. “Our department is a happier place because of employees like Jaylin and Mario. We are very lucky to have found them through Project SEARCH, which gave them a chance to show off their work ethic and willingness to learn.” Mario Hughes was recently hired for a similar position in

Nutrition Services. “I didn’t work there during Project SEARCH,” he explains, “but the director saw me working at The Willows and thought I did a good job. He asked my supervisor if I would apply for a job in Nutrition Services.” After going through the application and interview process, Mario was excited to start his new job on September 15. “I’ve had jobs before, but they weren’t a career for me. Project SEARCH helped me move to a better job.” Mario hopes to use his experience to benefit future employees. “I already know some of the new Project SEARCH workers and I want to help them learn,” he says. NIVC Services ~ Helping People Work EMPLOYMENT BOOT CAMP In early June, NIVC Services held its first Employment Boot Camp for young adults, funded by United Way of North Central Iowa. Campers discovered how their unique talents can translate into meaningful work and a purpose-driven life. The week began with a Blue Zones purpose workshop, and team-building exercises took place at the YMCA ropes course. Campers were introduced to the Mason City Transit system by going on a community-wide scavenger hunt. They were asked to complete objectives and find items using the transit system to locate and travel to community resources and places of interest. They also toured businesses including First Citizens National Bank, Hy-Vee East and Principal Financial. At each location, they were encouraged to ask questions about employment skills and jobs available in each industry. Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa provided additional tours and a workshop with their Human Resources department, with tips for applying for jobs and workplace success. Iowa Works provided a career assessment workshop and resume building activities. Campers left the weeklong Boot Camp with a resume, ideas and contacts to help them seek employment, many for the first time. Thank you to all of the area businesses and services who helped to make this experience an eye-opening journey into the working world for many young adults.

Bob Kelly Bob Kelly: HyVee West

NIVC Services has the privilege of supporting several of the “helpful smiles in every aisle” at HyVee West. Bob Kelly started working at HyVee West a year ago, as a member of the customer courtesy staff. “I help bag groceries and load them into customers’ cars,” he explains. “I have lots of experience working in stores, so I feel like this job matches my skills. I like my job because I’m a “people person” and it’s fun talking to customers.” Bob also participates in community events with the Joblink activities group. “I like to go to football, baseball and hockey games. I like to catch up with friends and meet new people.” Bob has been working in the community of Mason City for more than twenty years, and has no plans to stop. “I like the responsibility of getting up every morning and going to work. People miss me if I’m not there!” What can you do? Visit www.nivcservices.org to make a donation to help fund employment programs for North Iowans with disabilities.

Kevin Rachut: Schupick and Associates

Thursday, October 16, 2014 l Globe Gazette

“I had good training for this job – it’s just like cleaning at the Work Center,” Kevin Rachut says with a smile. Kevin is in charge of janitorial services at the offices of Schupick and Associates, where he works every Friday. “I just get the job done. There’s a lot to do. I start up front and vacuum first, then clean all the restrooms, then the break room.” Job coaching from NIVC Services’ Joblink division helps Kevin keep his work skills and quality in check. “Sara comes to visit every two weeks to make sure I am doing a good job,” Kevin says. “I make sure I do.” Kevin says that he is saving the money he’s earning for something special, though he hasn’t decided yet what that will be. “It’s a good job, and I want to keep doing good at it,” he says. What can you do? NIVC Services Work Center contracting can provide administrative or janitorial support for your business. Contact Brenda Watters at 423-3301 for more information.

Dean Borel: Home Depot, Waterloo

“Yes, yes, yes,” Dean Borel says for emphasis. “I like what I do!” Dean works at Home Depot in Waterloo. Throughout the spring and summer, he was in charge of watering plants in the Garden Center. “I also helped customers take plants to their cars and reach things on the shelves,” he says. “Now that it’s fall, I am going to work inside the store. I hope I get to work with the Christmas trees.” Dean’s job coach has helped him with organizing his tasks at work. “Bobbie meets me once a week at work. We have a list to go through to make sure I am getting everything done.” Dean says that having a job is important in helping him be independent. “I live in Waterloo and take the bus to work. I live by myself, so I have to pay my own rent. I can afford a nice apartment because I have a job.” What can you do? Support and patronize area businesses that value diversity on their staff by hiring and accommodating people with disabilities.

Mary Boehmer Mary Boehmer: Country Inn & Suites, Northwood

When Mary Boehmer began working with NIVC Services, she wasn’t sure what kind of jobs she would be able to do that would meet her physical needs. Throughout her training services at Affordables, NIVC Services staff helped Mary explore career opportunities that matched her work skills, abilities and interests. With determination and a positive attitude, Mary was able to get a job at Country Inn and Suites in Northwood, her hometown. “I saw the job listing in the paper. My job developer Tiffany helped me check it out and apply. I got hired the very next day!” she says with a laugh. “It’s a good place to work. Pam and Kara are the best bosses I could ever ask for. I get to work independently, and now I can make more than twenty beds a day!” Mary is emotional when describing the help she received from her team. “I just can’t thank them enough. Without NIVC Services, I never would have been able to get this job. They worked so hard to build up my confidence, and now I feel like I can do anything.” What can you do? Help provide training opportunities for NIVC Services clients by donating and shopping for clothing, furniture and home goods at Affordables and Affordables on 1st.

She is in charge of cleaning the sales area for the weekly consignment auctions at Cedar Valley Auction Company in Charles City. Cheryl prepared for her job by learning and practicing employment skills at the NIVC Services Work Center and at Affordables. “There’s a lot of chairs to move. I vacuum, dust and clean all the doors and windows,” she explains. “It’s my job to make sure everything looks nice for the customers. It’s so exciting when the auction starts.” Cheryl states that she enjoys her job and the support she receives from Jamie, her job coach. “I love my job! Jeff Gangsei: Rib Crib

Jeff Gangsei has been working at Rib Crib in Mason City since November. He was hired as kitchen staff and started out running the dish washer. He’s been learning more food prep and cooking tasks to increase his employability in a restaurant setting. “Working in the kitchen is fast-paced and it can be stressful,” Jeff comments. “My job coach Steph checks in on me once a week to see how things are going and make sure I’m handling it okay.” Having someone to discuss stressors and problem-solving skills with is helping Jeff maintain his employment successfully, giving him the confidence to expand his skills. “I had some past restaurant experience, but I’ve learned lots of new skills at this job. I’m starting to learn the front line tasks and I have a little stage-fright about them,” he says, “but truthfully, I love it here. Everyone is friendly and I’m not afraid to communicate. I try to walk in with a positive attitude and give 110% every day.” What can you do? Compliment any employee who gives 110% every day… you never know where you’ll meet a NIVC Services client.

Stef Murray Stef Murray: Applebee’s

Stef Murray found her job at Applebee’s through Joblink’s Customized Employment service, which helps match employers with job seekers whose specific needs and abilities may not fit a traditional job description. Stef is in charge of cleaning the restrooms, entry area and parking lots at Applebee’s before the restaurant opens every day. “I had to get used to working alone, but I like it now,” she says. “I can get all of my supplies ready myself, and I start working every day before my job coach gets here so she can see what I’ve done. Kathy is my job coach and she comes to see me every day for a little bit. She helps me talk to my boss if I need to. My boss says that I do a very thorough job at cleaning.” Stef says that she is interested in increasing her work schedule and has approached her supervisor about other duties she might be able to add to her responsibilities. Her advice for job seekers? “You have to be patient, and you have to be tough,” she says with a grin. “You will get a job if you keep trying.” What can you do? Nate is responsible for taking customers’ orders from the kitchen to the dining room or drive-through and keeping the dining area clean and ready for customers. “I like meeting new people and I want to make sure they have a good experience. You never know when it’s someone’s first time here, so it’s important for me to be a good host,” he says. “There are people who come a lot and they get to know me. Memorial Cremation Urns NIVC Services is now offering Memorial Cremation Urns for sale. This project began with a desire to meet the needs of our area veterans and grew to become a tribute to one of our own staff members. Dave Crowe, our warehouse production lead, passed away in a motorcycle accident in May. He was a Marine veteran of Vietnam. Dave’s tireless hard work, skill at crosswords, and stash of chocolates are dearly missed by all of the NIVC Services staff and clients. Dave’s family chose to honor his memory and his relationship with NIVC Services with an urn, the first one produced in our fine woodworking shop. All of us at NIVC Services would like to thank the Crowe family for sharing Dave’s legacy with us in this way. Our oak or maple cremation urns are handcrafted by NIVC Services clients and come in two sizes.
