New coach, new season for Osage baseball JIM CROSS

OSAGE — The Osage High School Green Devils baseball team is under the direction of first-year, head coach, Trevor Molitor. Molitor will be looking to his returning letter winners to help the Green Devils improve on their 2016 season record of 13-19. Athletes returning include seniors, Noah Krabbe, Garrett Maakestad and Jacob Wihlm; juniors, Nathan Bushbaum, Isaac Overfoell and Hunter Wagner; sophomores, Brett Bobinet, Caleb Danner, Joey Jacobs and Lucas Weigle; and freshmen, Thor Maakestad, Mason O’Malley, Jarett Scharper, Gavin Schaefer and Zack Williams. “We are really excited for the upcoming year,” Molitor said. “We have some great experience in our upper classmen and lots of returning players with varsity experience.” The Green Devils open their season at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 22 against Newman Catholic at home.

OSAGE — With his first year as head coach of the Osage High School softball team under his belt, second-year, head coach Kevin Isaacson is expecting a great season from his Green Devils. Despite finishing the 2016 season with a record 2715, Osage returns a strong group of players to the line-up. Returning letter winners for the Green Devils are seniors, Katelyn Maliszewski, Autumn O’Malley and Joslyn Perrin; junior, Gabby Schwarting; sophomores, Kourtney Chambers, Olivia Dodd, Katelyn Halbach and Kate Mostek; and freshman, Melanie Bye. “This group is very athletic, has a lot of playing experience, and are focused in their goals, while raking each game one pitch at a time,” Isaacson said. “We expect to have a very exciting season.” The Green Devils open their season 6 p.m. on Monday, May 22 against Newman Catholic at home.

Riceville baseball facing many unknowns JIM CROSS

RICEVILLE — The Riceville High School baseball team enters the 2017 season with a few unknowns needing to be resolved, according to their head coach, Bryce Conway. Conway is in his 14th year as the head coach for Wildcats, who finished the 2016 season with a conference record of 11-6. Overall, that was good enough for a fourth-place finish in the Iowa Star Conference. His returning letter winners include seniors, Ben Swancutt, Tylar Christensen, Cole Holmen, Kyler Bauer and Thomas Bauer; and juniors, Cole Hale, John Miller, Grant Shedenhelm and Kaleb Tweite. “We return an abundance of experience,” Conway said, “but there are many unknowns going into the season, including, who will step up to be our top pitchers, can we manufacture runs and can we make routine plays. “If we figure those things out, we will be pretty competitive throughout the season.” Conway sees his Wildcats along with Don Bosco and North Tama as

RICEVILLE — The Riceville High School softball team hopes to capitalize on its senior leadership and large incoming eighth grade class to help push the Wildcats to a great season. Riceville is coached by sisters, Amanda Conway and Andrea Bauer. This is Conway’s eighth year and Baer’s seventh year with the Wildcats. The Wildcats ended the 2016 season with a record of 3-26. Returning letter winners for Riceville include seniors, Susie Irvin, Marisa Tetzner, Ashley Hobson and Brooke Hobson; junior, Savannah Sullivan; sophomores, Aby Adams, Abby Marr and Debra Lane; and freshmen, Allie Bigley and Kalyn Jensen. Baer said she sees Janesville, Don Bosco and Clarksville being three top teams in the Iowa Star Conference this season. The Wildcats open their season at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 22 at Clarksville. Their first home game is at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22 against CAL Cadets.

ST. ANSGAR — With the St. Ansgar High School softball team is returning six players, their head coach, Lance Schutjer, looks for his team to be solid in defense and pitching. The Saints ended their 2016 season with a record of 9-7 and fourth-place finish in the Top of Iowa Conference – East Division. Schutjer is in his fourth year as the St. Ansgar head coach. He is joined by second-year, assistant coach Garrett Patterson. Returning letter winners for the Saints include seniors, Hollbrook Schutjer, Tara Kramer, Caitlyn Juhl, Kylie Juenger and Claire Groth; juniors, Kristen Hemann and Grace Heimer and sophomores, Tanyon Schutjer, Lily Walk, Jadyn Anderson, Sam Hemann, Gabby Finberg and Morgan Hemann. “We will be young in some areas and will expect everyone to accept their roles on the team,” Schutjer said. “Our goal will be to get better each game in the hitting department and hope our seniors lead the way for us to get better every time we take the field.” Schutjer said he sees
