GARNER — Watching Jace Engstler is a little like watching your buddy play a video game. The Garner-Hayfield senior quarterback makes plays with such fluidity it’s easy for coaches and teammates alike to just sit back and watch. Coming off a 31touchdown, 2,622-yard season, Engstler is on the cusp of going down as one of the state’s most prolific passers. He doesn’t need to duplicate his numbers from a year ago to crack the state’s top-10 list for career passing yards and passing touchdowns. He has 4,322 career passing yards and needs 1,512 yards this season to crack the top 10. His touchdown tally sits at 49 and he needs 12 passing touchdowns to put himself in the top 10 on that list. When asked about the potential to go down as one of the state’s alltime bests, he eludes talking about potential accolades like he eludes an oncoming rusher. “It’s cool, but I’d rather have a winning season,” said Engstler,

quarterback.” The biggest question revolves around who will fill the void of Josh Thompson, the all-state wide receiver who graduated his 1,127 yards and 16 touchdowns. The Cards return three of their top five pass catchers from last year in tailback Alex Van Gerpen and receivers Joe Ermer and Seth Williams. The three combined for 99 receptions and 1,033 yards and those numbers are expected to balloon this year. “He‘s amazing,” Ermer said of Engstler. “If nobody is open he can run it for 20 yards. If not, you just throw your hand up and he’ll find you.” Despite changing coaches from Cam Smith to Van Dusseldorp, the offense remains unchanged. It’s going to be four-wide with an onus on Engstler making plays with his feet or his arm. “I just want to make plays and try to win the games,” Engstler said. “I feel more comfortable now. I feel I can roam around and it’s easier to find people.” Added Van Dusseldorp, “Honestly, I think he belongs in that group. He just takes stuff in stride. Whether he feels stress, you’d never know. who wasn’t sacked in 341 pass attempts last year. “Making the playoffs would be a win for us. State-wise, whatever happens happens.” He isn’t overly concerned about numbers. The only number he worries about is the win total, which sat at five last year. Engstler is modest when talking about his talents. He has yet to make up his mind whether he’ll play football or basketball at the next level. His coach, Scott Van Dusseldorp, has talked with Iowa State and has heard from a host of Division-I football teams that are interested in the 6-foot-2 quarterback. “He’s a once-in-a-career-type kid,” Van Dusseldorp said. “Watching him you almost feel like a spectator. You just want to watch him play.” Opposing coaches in GarnerHayfield’s district have taken notice, too. “He might be the best quarterback in the state,” St. Ansgar coach Drew Clevenger said. “At least in 1A, he’s probably the best.” Added West Fork coach Eric Burt, “He’s the real deal. You know he’s going to get his. You have to try to make them onedimensional. He’s a heck of a

RICEVILLE — After making the transition to eight-man football last season, Riceville co-coaches Warren Haacke and Chris Conger are optimistic about the Wildcats’ second season in 8-man, District 3. “We are optimistic heading into the season as we return a variety of individuals with varsity football experience,” they said. “We understand that being in District 3 presents a great challenge with a few highlyranked teams. However, for the first time in a few years, we have the experience to challenge them.” The Wildcats, who finished 3-6 overall and 3-4 in the district last season, have a strong nucleus of upperclassmen that includes 10 seniors. Four of those seniors — Ryan Richardson, Kenny Linkenmeyer, Ethan Bauer and Caleb Harken — have played on the varsity since they were sophomores. Linkenmeyer ran for 1,190 yards and 10 touchdowns last season and also caught 14 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown while recording 58 tackles on defense. Bauer, a lineman, recorded 48 tackles while Harken tied for the team lead with 92 tackles, including nine tackles for loss. However, having

Spotts has directed a veer offense the past five years and can run the offense “with his eyes closed,” according to Penner. “I love the offense and I love coach Penner’s thinking, game planning and schemes,” Spotts said. “After five years of running the veer I’m pretty confident.” The biggest question comes on the defensive side of the ball where the entire linebacking corps graduated. Vikings to rely on seniors this season VENTURA — The seniors shall lead them. Ventura coach Mark Pueggel says he will depend heavily on seniors Ryan Schmitz and Joel Watson this season. “Ryan is coming back for his third year to play quarterback and that should help some of our younger players adjust faster on offense,” Pueggel said. “Joel Watson is our defensive leader and was our leading tackler last season.” Pueggel, whose team was 3-6 overall a year ago, said he sees talent in the lower grades. “We have a lot of younger players this year who are talented,” the coach said, “but have not had much experience playing at the varsity

MASON CITY — Max Krieger has been asked the question a few times. The safety-turned-linebacker for the Mason City High football team uses it as motivation. “It kind of fuels the fire when people say, ‘Are you going to suck?’ ” Krieger said. “We are going to show them we are going to be better than people think.” There’s no doubt a chip on the shoulder for this year’s Mohawks. Last year the team was heaped with high expectations only to go 3-6. With a number of new starters this year and Blake Spotts taking over at quarterback, questions are abound about how many wins this team can put together. Coach Justin Penner scaled back his playbook for Spotts, an option quarterback, and the offensive line returns starters Jared Bartel, Dakota Alexander and Elliot Craw. “We have talent,” Penner said. “We don’t have depth. “It’s been more about Xs and Os and execution this year. The kids’ heads aren’t spinning.” Penner has some specific goals for an offense that will feature Sam Skogen and Connor DeRoy behind Spotts. “One guy could step up and be a 1,000-yard rusher,” the coach said. “My goal would be to have three guys with 750 yards or more. “It’s attainable. How well are we going to execute? A lot of it is on us as coaches. Our kids are physically gifted enough to do that.” Those numbers would be quite a leap from last year when Skogen led an offense that sputtered much of the year with 462 rushing yards. DeRoy was second on the

Richardson, a linebacker who suffered a season-ending injury during the Wildcats’ opening game last season, back should improve the defense. “He will be a welcome addition to a run defense that needs to be greatly improved,” the coaches said. Richardson recorded 89 tackles as a sophomore which ranked second on the team. Meanwhile, fellow seniors Allen Koenigs and Marcus Uthe saw significant playing time last season. Uthe recorded 86 tackles while Koenigs took over at quarterback with Richardson — who will move to running back — out and proceeded to throw for 852 yards and 10 touchdowns along with nine interceptions.

Newman Catholic’s Kane Louscher makes a tackle in a game last season.

Bulk of Knights’ offense from last season gone By JEREMY KOENIGS sports@globegazette.com

MASON CITY — With every football season comes new challenges. For coach Mike Dirksen and the Newman Catholic football team, that is no exception. Coming off of an 11-1 season which saw the Knights win the Class A, District 3 title, the 2011 team will have several new starters. “This group will be much more blue-collar,” Dirksen said. “There won’t be the standouts, but everybody is going to work hard and they all have great attitudes. “It’s a new challenge for the kids. We have some kids that got to play quite a bit last year but every year is a whole new thing. It’s a whole different atmosphere Dirksen when you’re on the field at the beginning of the game than if you’re up or behind and get in the game. We have a lot of kids that will experience that for the first time.” Senior Andrew Ulveling is hoping that the work the team put in during the off-season translates to success on the field. “We had a really great off-season,” Ulveling said. “Everyone was hitting the weight room and doing off-season running. Hopefully it pays off on the football field. We just have to come out and play our style of football.” Fellow senior Gabe Dunn added that the Knights’ approach is a simple one with the same goal as last season. “We have to play one game at a time but ultimately we want that district championship,” Dunn

said.“The seniors have really taken control and we have a bunch of leaders out there.” For the Knights to duplicate last season’s success, they will need players to step up as they lost their top five rushers from last season, including Ben Buffington, Robbie Quintero and Tevin Brinson. Buffington ran for a schoolrecord 29 touchdowns and 1,385 yards while Quintero and Brinson combined for 1,231 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns. The Knights also graduated wide receiver Drew Verstegen and his 568 receiving yards. “You don’t look to replace them because all of those players are unique,” Dirksen said of his departed backfield. “Just like you don’t replace a Drew Verstegen, either, but each kid will find his own niche.” Ulveling Dirksen added that he likes what he’s seen from his players competing for starting spots. “We have had some very good competition for positions,” the coach said. “Our kids really understand that they could be on the field at any given time and that it’s their responsibility to be ready.” “With us not being deep in numbers, it’s really crucial that the kids know a couple of positions.” Another position of concern is quarterback, where the Knights were dealt another blow when Dunn, the team’s starting quarterback, broke his wrist during baseball season and isn’t expected to see time at the position early in the season. “It’s really hard the way things went down,” Dunn said. “It was definitely something that I didn’t want to happen but at the same

time it’s going to be a great opportunity for some other guys to step in. They’re going to have the opportunity to show what they have.” Newman must also mix in several starters on the offensive line under new line coach John Lee. “We always get some very good athletes on the offensive line,” Dirksen said. “Those kids enjoy the challenge of the type of blocking that we do and the opportunity to make line calls and adjust right on the line. “It’s just huge when those kids are able to pick up on that stuff and it’s a challenge for them all the time.” Several new faces will be starting on defense as well while Dunn will take over the kicking duties after splitting time with Dillon Stradt last Dunn season. “Special teams is a huge part of the game,” Dunn said. “Whenever you can get the other team pinned down deep, it makes it that much harder for them.” NEWMAN CATHOLIC KNIGHTS Coach: Mike Dirksen begins his 28th season as coach of the Knights with a record of 184-83. 2010 record: Newman Catholic finished 11-1 overall and 5-0 in Class A, District 3. A difficult schedule in 8-man, District 3 awaits as the district figures to see a balance similar to what it saw last season with four of the seven teams posting winning records.

NORTHWOOD — Northwood-Kensett survived a rocky start in 2010 to finish the season in a three-way tie for the Class A, District 3. Spencer Capitani was the workhorse for that team, but his graduation leaves the Vikings with a question mark under center. Still, the Vikings return enough talent to have an impact on the district race before the end of the season. Dylan Nitcher, Nik Werner and Garrett Olson were second, third and fourth on the team in rushing, respectively, so the Vikings may look for a more balanced approach on offense. Northwood-Kensett’s defense will have to carry the load this season if the Vikings are to find a way into the playoffs. The Viking held five opponents to 14 points or less a season ago, and

Bison hoping to build on late-season success BUFFALO CENTER — The North Iowa football team was quite young in 2010, but the Bison showed some growth over the year and finished 2-2 over their final four games. Bison head coach Don Anderson is looking to continue on the success of those final few games, and he will enjoy a large number of major contributors from last season. Frank Campos rushed for more than 600 yards and 10 touchdowns last season and was the leading tackler. Campos returns to perform double duty as does starting quarterback and safety Eric Krull. Krull completed more than 50 percent of his passes and averaged 112.6 yards passing per game. The defensive side of the ball will determine the success of the Bison this season. ner-Hayfield 1. 18, Treynor 1. 18, Lawton-Bronson 1. CLASS 1A Record Pts Prv 1. Madrid (4) 0-0 97 1 2. Broncos return 16 contributors is that they are now a year older and more experienced. The linebacking corps and the secondary should be well stocked, though, as Karter Uhlenhopp, Elijah Kinseth and Dustin Bruns bring experience to the linebacker position and Nick Dugger, Nathan Hildebrand, Andrew Kroeze and Ben Jeffers also return. The offense will revolve around quarterback Keaton Mallen, who completed 38 percent of his passes and was the team’s third-leading rusher. Also back is the top ball carrier, Logan McKenna, who gained 378 yards and scored six times.

BELMOND — BelmondKlemme head football coach Darwin Christensen is about to discover what the value of 16 returning contributors will be. “Our players worked very hard in the offseason in the weight room,” Christensen said. “We will be a stronger and more physical team.” The Broncos took some lumps in 2010 when they finished 1-8 overall and 1-4 in Class A, District 2 play. Belmond-Klemme struggled on the defensive side of the ball last season, in large part due to a team that relied heavily on freshmen and sophomores. The benefit of that youth

The Broncos will still be comparatively young and may be a season away from a good year, but don’t be surprised by an extra win or two this year and a much more competitive team.

After a bit of a slow start, the North Iowa defense allowed just 14 points per game in its late-season victories. A difficult schedule awaits North Iowa, including a district matchup with West Hancock and an opening game against West Fork.

2011 PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW

Green Devils have experience coming back By JEREMY KOENIGS sports@globegazette.com

OSAGE — The Osage football team regressed last season, finishing 4-6 overall and 4-3 in Class 2A, District 3 and an exit in the first round of the playoffs after a remarkable run to the state quarterfinals in 2009. Coach Lon Lawler is hoping for another deep run into the postseason this season for the Green Devils. Osage returns 13 letterwinners, but must break in a new quarterback as

Trevor Molitor and his 1,048 passing yards were lost to graduation. Senior Tanner Molitor is expected to take the snaps under center Andrew Milbrandt while Osage returns two of its top three running Bushbaum backs and its secondleading receiver in Austin Wagner, Luke Hanke and Matt Bushbaum, respectively.

Nashua-Plainfield has already matched last year’s win total NASHUA — It didn’t take long for the Nashua-Plainfield football team to match last year’s win total. In Week 0, Taylor Wedeking, Matt Sharp, Alec Mulvey and Garrett Bloomquist each found the end zone in a 25-8 triumph over Rockford. “This is my fourth year with this group,” coach Ben Jass said. “They’ve been lifting weights and running track. Those are the things that make the difference. That’s the difference between a 10- to 15-yard run and getting in the zone.” The Huskies needed to put in the time in the offseason in a district which features three of the top-10 teams in Class 1A after a 1-8 season. The Huskies return 12 letterwinners and in that season-opening win held Rockford to 106 yards of total offense. NASHUA-PLAINFIELD HUSKIES Coach: Ben Jass. 2010 record: 1-9, 0-7. LAKE MILLS — Bill Byrnes has no illusions what it takes to be successful in a loaded district. If you aren’t good up front, you aren’t going to be good. It’s pretty simple. “I think we have more depth on both sides of the ball,” the Lake Mills football coach said. “We have 12-13 kids up front. It’s much more competitive between our ones and twos. In the past we had 6-7 guys, then it really dropped Byrnes off.” The linemen participated in a camp this summer put on by a couple guys who know about line play — Kevin and Andy Stensrud. Nineteen kids showed up for that. It was an encouraging start to the summer. A couple months later Byrnes is still optimistic that the line can bring an improved running game to a Lake Mills team that went 3-6 last year. “Last year, we didn’t run

Charles CityCOMETS

STILLS T R E A K I N G Lions bring 32-game regular season win streak into 2011 By KIRK HARDCASTLE kirk.hardcastle@globegazette.com

CLEAR LAKE —Do a YouTube search for “playoffs” and you’ll find the classic Jim Mora rant that has nearly 3 million views. Watch the video of the former Indianapolis Colts coach and you’ll hear him use the word “playoffs” several times in his postgame press conference. While Mora and “playoffs” go hand in hand in the world of classic NFL clips, Clear Lake and playoffs are linked together when it comes to Iowa prep football. Clear Lake has been to the playoffs 13 straight Adams seasons. The last time there was a postseason without the Lions in it was 1997. “We just want to Kellogg keep the tradition going,” Clear Lake senior Logan Kellogg said. “We need to stick together as a team. “If we do what we’re told by the coaches, we should be pretty successful.” If that’s been the philosophy for Clear Lake football it’s certainly worked. Clear Lake is one of nine schools that have made 13 or more straight playoff appearances in the history of the playoffs, and is one of five teams that have a current streak of at least 10 playoff appearances. The Lions also own a 32-game regular season win streak and a 26-game district win streak. So expecations are high again for this group of Lions. “I don’t see them ever changing,” veteran Clear Lake coach Fred Wieck said. “We’ve been at a fairly high level for quite a while. “It’s just something we’ve come to kind of expect. I think our fans expect it. Our coaching staff expects it. Our players expect it.” Clear Lake returns eight starters from last year’s team that advanced to the second round of the playoffs before being eliminated by West Delaware, 23-16. Ozzie Adams returns for his senior season at quarterback. Adams threw for 900 yards and rushed for 455 yards last year. He threw for six touchdowns and rushed for five more. “I’m a lot more comfortable,” Adams said. “I know what to expect. “I won’t have the first-

CHARLES CITY — Veteran Charles City football coach Steve Stallsmith calls his team a work in progress. The Comets return five starters from last year’s team that was 4-5 overall and placed fifth in Class 3A, District 4. “We’re getting better every day,” Stallsmith said. “We have a lot of young kids that haven’t seen the field yet. “We’re trying to figure out where everyone fits in best.” CHARLES CITY COMETS Stallsmith lists one of his Stallsmith. team’s goals as to reach the play- 2C0O1A0CHRE—COSteve RD — 4-5 overall, 3-4 in Class offs, so that means moving up at 3A, District 4. Isakson and Johnson both played linebacker a year ago and Halligan played on the defensive line. “We have the most returners on defense,” Stallsmith said. “We’ll have to play some solid defense and try to cause some turnovers. “We’ll need to try to get some field position with our special teams. Offensively, we’ll have to run the ball and control the clock a little bit.” The Comets open the season Friday at Clear Lake. “I know the kids like to play Clear Lake,” Stallsmith said. “It’s a challenge every year and we can see where we’re at.”

ALGONA — The Algona Bulldogs were 1-8 in Eric Bormann’s initial season as head coach. Algona’s lone win was a 34-7 victory over Nevada. Bormann said he thinks the Bulldogs can improve on that win total in 2011. “One year into a new system,” the coach said, “I hope to see a lot of improvement built upon the consistency of our program. “We have a core group of seniors who have worked hard to get to this moment and hope to build upon what was started last year.” Algona returns 14 starters, including all-district performer Michael Erpelding. Erpelding collected 63 tackles (32 solos) from his linebacker position. He also had four tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries. Bormann said last year was a learning period for the Bulldogs. Erpelding “Last season was the start of something new for the Bulldogs,” the coach said. “It was a period of adjustment to the new overall expectations, offense and defense and new coach. “Some injuries and bad breaks led to some setbacks throughout the season, but improvment was made every week.” Algona opens the season Friday at home against Forest City. The Bulldogs play at Estherville-Lincoln Central in their second nondistrict contest (Sept. 2). The Bulldogs open Class 3A, District 3 competition at home against Boone Sept. 9. “I look for Clear Lake and Webster City to be the frontrunners in the district,” Bormann said.
