ENSURE A BRIGHTER YEAR Fall/Winter Program Guide MASON CITY FAMILY YMCA
WELCOME We are headed into a new and exciting year at the YMCA! Sugar Plum Preschool begins taking registration in January for the 2011-2012 school year. If you have a three to five year old, please contact Jenny Mikkelsen at 641-424-9316 to enroll. Check out our class offerings inside! January is a busy time of year at the YMCA. Please be careful if you are increasing your physical activity. The key to healthy living is being consistent. If you have any questions about your workout or how to get started, contact Christa Vander Leest, our Health and Wellness Director, to schedule an appointment with one of our certified personal trainers. Volunteering is a great way to meet people and give back to our community. At the YMCA, we have many volunteer opportunities that include coaching, programs and service projects. Please ask the front desk for your volunteer application today. I want to thank you for your continued support of the YMCA mission and look forward to seeing you at the Y!

Select a swimming class that fits your child’s skill level. PRIMARY LESSONS (6 mos. - 5 yrs.) Aqua Babies- Ages 6 mo.– 2 years
3-5 Aqua Shrimps - Ages 3 yrs - 5 yrs. This is a parent/child class which helps acquaint very young children with the joys of water. As the class progresses, the instructor slowly begins working more individually with children on skills to help ready them for preschool classes without parents.
Classes are designed to allow the child to have fun in the water through guided instruction with parents. The child will be exposed to games that use basic movements in the water such as kicking, arm strokes, and breath control. Activities are based on the developmental abilities of the child. Classes held in the warm-water therapy pool.
PRESCHOOL LESSONS (3 - 5 yrs.)
Level 1
Pike - This level helps children learn safe pool behavior, adjust to the water, and develop independent movement through stroke and kicking skills and becoming comfortable putting their face in the water while doing other skills.
Level 2
Eel - This advanced beginner level is for children who are comfortable and more independent in the water. They are taught to flutter kick, float by themselves and over-arm recovery stroke.
Level 3
Level 4
PROGRESSIVE LESSONS (6 yrs. and up)
Level 1
Level 2
Level 3
Level 4
Polliwog -This is the beginning level for school age children which acquaints them with the pool. By the end of this level, they should know their front and back floats, master paddle stroke and overarm recovery stroke. Children also learn survival float and treading water. (Compares to Red Cross levels 1 & 2.)
Level 5
Guppy - Children continue to practice and build upon basic skills such as master paddle stroke, treading water and survival float. They are also introduced to front crawl and back crawl.
Level 6
Minnow - This is the initial intermediate level. Children refine their front and back crawl strokes they have learned as their skills become more like those normally used in swimming. They start to learn their breaststroke kick and diving skills. (Red Cross level 4.)
Level 7
Fish - At this point, students work to perfect the front crawl, elementary backstroke, back crawl, breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. (Red Cross level 5.)
Ray - Children at this level review floats on both front and back. They will also kick with a kickboard the length of the pool, improve on over-arm recovery and adjustment to deep water. Starfish - Children review and improve previous skills, build endurance, learn to tread water and perform more progressive diving skills. Children can swim half-way across the pool on their front and back crawl without assistance by the end of this level. Flying Fish - At this advanced level, students work on open medleys consisting of front crawl, back crawl, butterfly and breaststroke. Students will also tread water and survival float longer to increase their endurance. (Red Cross Level 6) Shark - The students at this level continue to improve their strokes with starts, turns and dives, learn the sidestroke, and the lifesaving medley. Students learn basic first aid and treatment for shock. (Red Cross level 6.) Porpoise - At this final level, students are exposed to a wide range of aquatic experiences. In class, these advanced swimmers learn new strokes and rescue skills, as well as develop leadership skills through volunteer experiences.
Adult Lessons (15 & Up) Beginner - This class is for adults who do not feel at ease in the water or who have never participated in swimming lessons. Non-swimmers are taught basic swimming skills and water safety.
