READERS’ CHOICE: THRIFT STORE

One Vision Village Store T he One Vision General Store in Clear Lake, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary next year, stands out because of its dedication to customer service. A group of volunteers opened the thrift shop in 1972 to help financially support the mission of One Vision, formerly known as Handicap Village and then Opportunity Village: to provide services to individuals with many different needs and abilities. The store still has many dedicated volunteers as well as wonderful employees, said Lisa Dodgen, business development district manager for One Vision. Their positivity “changes the entire cul-

ture and the entire feel of the thrift shop,” she said. They are always looking for ways to improve customer service, according to Dodgen. “We are always looking for people to join our team to help further not only the store, but our mission as what we do as a store directly affects our ability to provide services for those we serve and people in our community,” she said. In addition to the employees, volunteers, donors and customers, “we just want to thank everyone who voted for us,” Dodgen said.

or the second consecutive year, Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar & Grill in Clear Lake was named the best sports bar in North Iowa in the Readers Choice competition. “That’s a pretty big deal considering all the sports bars in the area,” said Al Hejna, who co-owns the establishment at 307 Main Ave. with his brother, Mike. Rookies, which opened in 1995, also was named Best Bloody Mary Bar and received honorable mention in the Women’s Night Out, Billiards/Pool, and Dancing/ Night Club categories. Sevens Restaurant & Steakhouse, which the Hejna brothers opened adjacent to Rookies in 2009, was named Best Breakfast and Best Bloody Mary in the Readers Choice contest. The brothers opened a third establishment in the 300 block of Main Avenue, TAP’d Taphouse & Cocktail Lounge, in June 2019. This year TAP’d received honorable mention in the Mixed

READERS’ CHOICE: DENTIST

Central Park Dentistry A

t the time Dr. Jay Lala founded Central Park Dentistry in Mason City in 1993, the vision was simple. “I was following the golden rule – treat people the way I want to be treated, and the rest will take care of itself,” says Lala. Now for the 14th year in a row, Central Park Dentistry has been named The Readers’ Choice Award for Dentistry. We want to say thank you to our patients! We are humbled by your continued loyalty. We work daily to live up to your trust in us. Twenty-eight years later, the office continues to grow. This fall, Central Park Dentistry is opening its third location in Osage. Two new “home-grown” doctors have joined the group – Dr. Rick Young, from Garner and Dr. Grant Lehmann from near Hampton. Young is excited to join the team, stating, “Over the last few years, I have observed the practice, and I have gotten so excited to be a part of it. I have the opportunity to be a part of something special, and I am grateful for that.” Lehmann was looking for a practice with solid morals

I am so proud to treat patients in this type of environment and with these teammates,” Lehman said. The culture at Central Park is something that definitely stands out. “Our fantastic team is crucial in upholding our culture,” Dr. Jennifer Thackery said.

Dr. Briana Brayton says, “Our culture is what sets us apart. We treat each other and our patients like family, and the rest falls into place. We absolutely have the best team who always puts the patients first.” Dr. Matthew Hansen continues, “We have an incredible team here. We laugh together every day. We have fun and love taking the best care of our patients we possibly can.” Thank you to our patients and community for this incredible honor. As always, you will leave with a smile.

READERS’ CHOICE: AUDIOLOGY / EAR & HEARING

Hearing Associates Over the past six to eight months, Hearing Associates in Mason City has introduced brand-new technology that has resulted in a dramatic improvement in people’s ability to hear and understand speech. Stuart Trembath, owner and audiologist at Hearing Associates, said these advances include artificial intelligence, “which makes the hearing aids smart” so they can do more to enhance speech in some of the more difficult listening situations. This has done a great deal to help patients, who’ve been having a very difficult time during the pandemic, according to Trembath. “COVID has caused tremendous isolation for our patients, not being able to be out and about for months,” he said. “They feel isolated already because of the

hearing loss, and not they are not in touch with the world as they know it.” Mask use makes it a lot harder to hear and understand speech, according to Trembath. He said those with hearing loss depend a lot on visual input when people are talking to them, so face masks “make even a mild hearing loss very problematic.” Bluetooth technology now being used in hearing aids has given back to patients their ability to have phone conversations by streaming call audio directly to their hearing devices via Bluetooth, according to Trembath. The same is now possible for TV audio as well. In addition, the tech gives audiologists the ability to program hearing devices remotely, which allows for more convenience for

some patients. Working with the patient after they get fitted for hearing aids is crucial, Trembath said. Hearing Associates has a variety of activities in the office as well as in a class titled, “Your Hearing Journey” to help patients. “We can work with patients on communication strategies as well as work with the significant others in their lives who are impacted by their hearing loss to try and alleviate communication breakdowns,” Trembath said. Hearing Associates, which has had a presence in Albert Lea, Minnesota, for more than 15 years, will open a new, independent office there in September to offer better access and longer hours for patients in that area. Hearing Associates now has nine locations in Iowa and Minnesota.

Thank you North Iowa!

The NIACC Performing Arts and Leadership Series 2021 Readers Choice

NIACC has been serving students and the North Iowa community for more than 100 years and we value the trust you place in us. We are excited to welcome our students back to campus this fall and look forward to a return to face-toface classes, cheering on our Trojan athletes, and enjoying musical events in our auditorium. The energy and enthusiasm that our students and the community bring to campus every day makes NIACC a great place to be.

We are excited to raise the curtain and welcome you back for another year of fantastic entertainment! While we couldn’t be with you over the past year, we were able to make some much needed renovations to the Auditorium. The original 40-yearold seats were removed and replaced; new carpet was added in the lobby and Auditorium; brighter aisle lighting was put in; and a high-quality live-streaming system was installed. It really looks great!

The past year brought a significant amount of change to all of our lives and we are grateful for the determination of our students and the support of our community. Thank you North Iowa for your continued confidence in us to provide the educational experiences that result in lucrative careers, successful transfers, professional development, and entrepreneurial opportunities.

We are fortunate to live and work in such a strong community and look forward to bringing you Tony® Award-winning shows, Grammy® Award-winning artists, comedians, and internationally acclaimed speakers for many years to come.

READERS’ CHOICE: NURSING HOME AND IN HOME CARE

ABCM Corp. Oakwood Care Center D uring another year of challenges and uncertainty, the team at Oakwood Care Center has once again stepped up to the plate. ABCM Corporation’s top priority has always been its residents, tenants, and clients; even though the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown several curve balls into our normal day-to-day activities and routines, Oakwood Care Center has knocked it out of the park. “To be nominated by North Iowa as Reader’s Choice selections is an honor in itself for Oakwood Care Center and the variety of services we provide,” said administrator Krystal Thoe. “To be selected as the winner for both ‘Nursing Home’ and ‘In Home Care’ is so exciting for our team, who have worked so hard during the pan-

demic to keep our residents, tenants, and clients safe, active, and engaged. “We’re also honored to be selected as second place and runner up, respectively, for ‘Assisted Living’, ‘Senior Living Center’, and ‘Independent Living’ categories. We know there are a lot of options in North Iowa for care and are grateful for the recognition and nominations from the community.” The challenges of the past year have forced people to look further into health care, whether it be short or long-term care, or with assistance with living more independently for themselves or loved ones. “We never want anyone to be caught off guard when it comes to options for care in North Iowa. That’s why we encourage everyone to look into options available so

tinued. “In addition, our Outpatient Therapy Center offers a variety of therapies to the community. The Courtyard Independent & Assisted Living provides assistance to those who wish to remain independent in their local community, while ABCM Healthy Living Home Care offers assistance with daily tasks to those who live in their own home.”

CENT Credit Union O ver the past eight years, the CENT Credit Union in Mason City has been able to double its assets. “That’s a commitment not only from the team, but from the membership and the community,” said CEO Matthew R. Chizek. “We have some exciting stuff planned for years to come.” On Nov. 1, CENT will launch a whole new technological advancement “that finally puts us in line with all the larger financials,” he said. This advancement will include a new website, online banking, text alerts, a new mobile app, remote deposit capture (which allows members to take a photo of a check with their phone and upload it), and electronic signatures. All these changes are two and a half years in the making, according to Chizek. “Thrilled for our membership who deserve the very best” he said. CENT has a rich history in Mason City,

according to Chizek. “We are really proud of our 56 years in the community,” he said. CENT was founded in 1965, originally as Mercy Family Credit Union. Since that time, it has acted as the continuing credit union in mergers with the City Employees Credit Union (1998), Lehigh Employees Credit Union (2004), Government Employees Credit Union (2012) and the Northwestern States Cement Employee Credit Union (2015). In 2017, CENT Credit Union created one of its biggest expansions by opening a new headquarters and west side location in Mason City. “We are very thankful for everyone embracing the change that CENT continues to bring,” Chizek said. “We have a strong commitment of service above self and proud of our family atmosphere.” He said he sincerely appreciates the community’s willingness “to let us morph

The Knoll family has built the shop’s reputation on commitment to their customers. READERS’ CHOICE: WINDOWS

Window World W indow World of Mason City, which is locally owned but nationally known, continued its commitment to customer service during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s an honor to still be able to be the customers’ favorite,” said owner Katy Showalter. “Our customers come first because that’s the only way we keep doing what we do.” Even in this incredibly difficult time for contractors to be able to obtain product and have enough labor force to get things done, Window World is doing the best it can to keep manufactured items coming in, according to Showalter. She said the Window World team in Mason City has grown tremendously over the past few years, so there’s enough labor to be able to install anything as soon as it arrives. Window World, America’s largest replacement window and exterior remodeling company, was founded in 1995. The company now has 200 locations all over the United States.

Window World is an ENERGY STAR partner and its windows, vinyl siding and Therma-Tru doors have all earned the Good Housekeeping Seal. Showalter said the Mason City location is locally owned, so all decisions are made on that level. The vast majority of the employees are from Mason City, but others come from all over North Iowa. The store offers patio doors, entry doors, storm doors, siding and roofing. The Window World tagline is “America’s Exterior Remodeling.” “If it’s on the outside of the house, we can do it,” Showalter said. The Mason City Window World location, which was founded in 2012, draws customers from North Iowa and southern Minnesota. It has a showroom, but Showalter said it’s “not a big box store” where customers buy things off the shelves. Everything from Window World is custom ordered and custom built, according
