Sandwiches can be prepared hot or cold with a variety of meats, cheeses, fresh vegetables and up to 13 sauces. Clear Lake’s annual Christmas celebration, Christmas by the Lake, has once again been voted the Readers Choice for Best Winter Event in North Iowa. “It is an award-winning event,” explained event chairman, Gene Madson, “and we’re very proud of it.” Christmas by the Lake has received recognition by A&E Television as one of the Top 20 Places to Spend the Christmas Holiday, as well as the recipient of the Tourism Event of the Year in the State of Iowa. This year’s event will be held November 30th through December 2nd. Horse drawn carriage rides, trolley rides, Santa’s House, strolling Dickens characters, lighted parade, fireworks over the frozen lake, Polar Bear Plunge for charity, Festival of Trees, and more family fun fill the weekend. “Since 1995 we have strived to put on the best free family fun festival possible. To see over 10,000 people line Main Avenue for the parade and the fireworks at the seawall is a spectacular site,” said Madson. “We wouldn’t be able to put on such a great event without the support of our sponsors and the commitment of the volunteers.”

“I was overjoyed to hear we received this honor again,” says Scot Wright, owner of Comfort, Inc., this year’s Readers’ Choice in the heating and cooling category. “This is the fourth time in eight years.” Now running the business started by his father Jim Wright in 1967, Scot says, “We have a large repeat customer base from a nine county area. I think their vote is a response to the quality of work we do and the quality of the equipment we sell.” Comfort, Inc., long a Carrier product dealership, is now in the process of becoming a factory-approved dealer through the Carrier Corporation. This new designation will mean special prices for equipment and an upcoming website. Comfort does residential and commercial heating and air conditioning for both new construction and remodels. It has recently added light plumbing to their services. Scot completed heating and cooling training at North Iowa Area Community College in 1979 when it was a one-year program . Today he hires through that program, now expanded to two years, offering an apprenticeship to second-year students in their second semester. “It now offers greater depth,” he explains. Comfort employs five workers in peak seasons. To those who voted for Comfort Inc., Scot says, “Thank you very much. “Our people have worked very hard all year to keep improving our hotel,” says Jim Latham, manager of Mason City’s Country Inn and Suites, “so we are very honored to receive the Readers’ Choice award for the second year.” Among the improvements in the past year are an expanded complimentary breakfast that works from nine menus in the Carlson BR Breakfast Program. According to Jim, it’s expanded to include vacation packages, Club Med, cruises and a wide variety of gift card options. “The size of Club Carlson has doubled in membership as a result,” he notes. “We have a totally remodeled lobby, too,” says Jim. “When people walk through the door, they expect a clean, bright, fresh, friendly atmosphere, and our greatest strength is in consistently providing that.” He adds, “Our customers also expect a great breakfast, a clean room, their reservations and keys to be ready, and check out to be simple with the bill ready and correct. They get that here.” With 88 smoke-free rooms, 33 of which are suites, Country Inn and Suites serves primarily corporate customers during the week and family groups on weekends. Three spaces available for families to gather include the lobby, conference room and breakfast area. “It’s amazing how many people are sitting talking in these facilities on a weekend day,” remarks Jim. Ms Nina’s Dance Center, voted Best Dance Studio, was started by Nina Esslinger in 1976. With studios in Clear Lake, Hampton, Waverly and Iowa Falls, Ms Nina’s provides professional instructions in Classical Ballet and Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Musical Theatre Production and Children’s Work. “We are honored and surprised. My thanks to those who voted. I’m sure they are parents and students who have supported us over the years,” says Nina. Ms Nina’s is unusual because of the high level of her professional dance training combined with her training as a teacher. Students are drawn from an area within a thirty mile radius of each studio. Lessons for any given age group are the same at each location. Each class trains students in every genre. For recitals, classes from the schools often are combined into one larger group that performs well together. Sandra Greufe, Blairsburg, says, “Our daughter, Kaleigh, has been dancing since the age of three. When she was a Freshman in High School, we changed studios to start dancing at the Hampton location. It has been a wonderful experience! We love the fact that there is a lot of technique work and the structure offered during the classes maximizes the instructional time. We have seen Kaleigh gain confidence in her dancing and she has learned so much in just these last two years.” Ms Nina says, “Students who transfer to us after classes at other studios in North Iowa find that their age group level of training far exceeds what they have received. They have to work hard to catch up. We are delighted that Kaleigh has worked hard and done well.”

It all began with his grandfather George in 1935 and continued when his father Gene joined in 1947. The best salad bar and onion rings, according to North Iowa readers, are found at Ruby Tuesdays. Manager Logan Galanits says, “It’s a great honor that people in Mason City enjoy our salad bar because we put a lot of emphasis on it.” With just over a year in Mason City, Ruby Tuesday offers a broad menu selection. Among the most popular items are the New Orleans Seafood – blackened tilapia with shrimp - ribs and the garden salad bar. Lunch choices include the petite plates like a shrimp platter, sliced sirloin or the Creole Catch. Local response has also been “great” for the 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday brunch. Both breakfast and dinner items are available plus a liveaction omelet center and desserts like yogurt parfait and pastries as well as the garden bar. While the menu varies, it often includes items like “eggs, French toast, cheesy hash browns, breakfast potatoes, stir-fry and pasta. There is always a carving station offering among the dinner items.” “We have a great staff,” explains Logan. “I couldn’t be happier with them. They enjoy working here and you can tell that. They are friendly and offer excellent service.” Logan comes to Mason City from Missouri where he also was employed by Ruby Tuesday. With ten to twelve men working in two crews just on roofing, the company’s residential service has increased ten fold in the more than ten years it’s been in business. Because of that growth, Young Construction will be opening up a new show room. Planned to be ready in late 2012, the facility will be located on old Highway 18 in Nora Springs. As part of providing that quality service, Dan personally visits with homeowners to discuss their options. Young Construction works not just on roofing but also does siding, remodeling projects and residential additions as well as some commercial construction. “We’re very competitive in the market,” explains Dan, “and the quality is there. As a result we get very few call backs for repairs and lots of referrals from satisfied customers.
