Why shopping local matters I

t’s easy to forget that shopping local helps your community and state in many, many ways. From tax dollars to supporting momand-pop businesses, the benefits are myriad. SPEND LOCAL AND MORE STAYS LOCAL Numerous studies have analyzed the way money recirculates, and most agree that money spent locally has a much higher chance of staying in the community. A study commissioned by the British Columbia division of the Canadian Union of Public Employees found that for every $1 million in sales, independent retail stores

generate $450,000 in local economic activity, compared to just $170,000 for chains. Among restaurants, the figures are $650,000 for independents and $300,000 for chains. MORE STABLE JOBS Economists at Yale University and the University of Bristol found that in times of high unemployment, small businesses both retain and create more jobs than large firms. During the recession of March 2008 to March 2009, the employment growth rate of large employers fell 1.65 percent more than the growth rate of small employers,

compared with the previous year. IT’S BETTER FOR THE COMMUNITY A study by a professor at Baylor University found strong positive relationships between local ownership, firm size and employee loyalty, which they refer to as organizational commitment. Using data from a nationally representative public opinion survey, the study found that 57.2 percent of small firm workers scored in the highest commitment category, compared to 40.5 percent of large firm workers.

f you’re totally stumped for a gift selection, there’s nothing wrong with snagging a gift card and tossing it in a greeting card. There’s no rule, however, that says you have to buy a card from a chain restaurant or big box store. Think local for an easy gift solution. CHECK LOCAL SHOPS If you find a store you think your loved one would really like but can’t find the perfect gift, just get a gift card and let them enjoy shopping and picking out their favorite items on your dime. DON’T FORGET RESTAURANTS Most local restaurants also offer gift cards, and a free lunch is a great gift. COFFEE SHOPS & BAKERIES If you want to offer a bit more of a snack, pick up a gift certificate to a local coffee shop or bakery. A $20 or $30 gift card can stretch a good distance at a coffee house or bakery.

Shake up traditional stockings W

e all know they’re supposed to be hung by the chimney with care, but if you’re looking to freshen up your family’s stocking tradition, consider some twists on the classic. IDEAS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE Shoes, boots and wooden clogs: You don’t have to hang stockings to collect goodies from Santa Claus, according to traditions from around the world. All kinds of holiday legends inspire people to leave their footwear where St. Nick is sure to find them. MATCH YOUR THEME Are you harking back to

the days of old? Choose stockings that enhance the vintage vibe by combing thrift shops for originals or looking to your local craft store for reproductions. If you’re handy with knitting needles, make your own homemade versions. For a rustic holiday setting, replace stockings with brown paper bags or custom-printed sacks made of burlap. Fashion a gift bucket by attaching burlap fabric to an empty paint can with Mod Podge and wrapping the handle with candycane-striped Christmas ribbon.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION If you’d like to try something different above the fireplace this year, other good places to hang stockings include an indoor stair banister or balcony, strung from a rope attached to a wall or hanging from a wrought iron floor-standing stocking hanger. Repurpose a wall-hanging coat rack into a stocking hanger with a coat of red paint and your family’s name in white letters. Arrange stockings on a section of faux rustic fence made from wood scraps or a decorative ladder.

SUGAR COOKIE RECIPE Featured is a recipe for the perfect sugar cookies, courtesy of Food Network and world-renowned chef Alton Brown. Ingredients 3 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 cup sugar 1 egg, beaten 1 tablespoon milk Powdered sugar, for rolling out dough Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside. Place butter and sugar in large bowl of electric stand mixer and beat until light in color. Add egg and milk and beat to combine. Put mixer on low speed, gradually add flour, and beat until mixture pulls away from the side of the bowl. Divide the dough in half, wrap in waxed paper and refrigerate for 2 hours. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Sprinkle surface where you will roll out dough with powdered sugar. Remove 1 wrapped pack of dough at a time from refrigerator, sprinkle rolling pin with powdered sugar and roll out dough to 1/4-inch thick. Move the dough around and check underneath frequently to make sure it is not sticking. If dough has warmed during rolling, place cold cookie sheet on top for 10 minutes to chill.

Sunday, November 20, 2016

Cut into desired shapes, place at least 1-inch apart on greased baking sheet, parchment, or silicone baking mat and bake for 7 to 9 minutes or until cookies are just beginning to turn brown around the edges, rotating cookie sheet halfway through baking time. Let sit on baking sheet for 2 minutes after removal from oven and then move to complete cooling on wire rack. Serve as is or ice as desired. Store in airtight container for up to 1 week.

Budget gifting B

udgeting for the holidays is a great way to keep spending in check. With these suggestions, holiday shoppers can better manage their spending. Look at spending from last year. The first step to establishing a budget is to review spending from last year. Set limits on spending. Many financial planners recommend shoppers spend no more than 1.5 percent of annual income on holiday expenses. Make lists of high-priority gifts. Select the gifts that have the most importance or those you want to buy the most. Keep track of spending. Be sure to keep receipts and maintain a log of all your holiday spending. Correct mistakes promptly. If you spend a little more than intended on one gift, make the proper adjustments the next time you’re out.

Greenery care F

resh greenery hung in warm or dry areas should be watered every couple of days, either by spraying with water from a bottle or by laying it in a few inches of water. A cool outdoor place is the best option for longevity and minimal care. When hanging fresh greenery indoors, avoid areas near heat sources or direct sunlight to extend its life. Martha Stewart recommends “conditioning” live cuttings by trimming the branches at a 45-degree angle and gently crushing the end of the stem with a small hammer, then letting them rest in water for a few hours. She also recommends spraying with an anti-desiccant spray found at nurseries to keep in moisture by sealing the plant’s pores. If you plan to place the greenery in water, re-cut the branches at a 45-degree angle to help them better absorb water.

How to ship smart S

hipping can be expensive, especially for last-minute shoppers who want to ensure their gifts arrive in time for the holidays. But the following are a handful of ways to ship smart and save both time and money. SHIP DIRECTLY TO THE RECIPIENT. Last-minute shoppers who are buying online can save money by shipping gifts directly to the recipient. SHIP EARLY. Waiting to ship all gifts at the same time may be more convenient, but it can prove more costly as well. COMPARISON SHOP. Much like you can save money by comparison shopping for holiday gifts, you can save by comparing shipping costs as well. INSURE THE ITEMS YOU SHIP. While the industry is often remarkably effective at delivering gifts intact and on time, items are sometimes lost or damaged.
