Eagles build on strong foundation BOB LINK

Spring Sports 2015‌

BRITT – With their top runner returning and three out of four members of the state qualifying shuttle hurdle relay back, the West Hancock boys track team starts the new season with a solid foundation. Add to the mix a solid group of athletic prospects and veteran head coach Bob Sanger says he’s optimistic when looking at his Eagles team. “We feel we will be more competitive this year as a team,” said Sanger, who has a full squad with 30 boys out for track. Last year the Eagles finished fifth in both the North Iowa Conference and in the state qualifying district meet. Joey DeHart, a three event qualifier for last year’s state track meet, leads the strong senior class. DeHart qualified in the 200 meter dash, the 400 meter and 800 meter runs. Seniors Zach Johnson and Quinn Yeakel and junior Sam Smith return from the shuttle hurdle relay team that also

qualified for state. Other seniors this year include miler Logan Brown, throwers Allen Chizek and Sean Schmid and sprinters Logan Weiland and Keaton Yeakel. In addition to running the hurdles, Sam Smith was a consistent placer in the high jump one year ago. Other junior athletes includes sprinter Connor Sonius and Vicente Gonzalez, who will run sprints and the 800 meter race. Dylan Eckels and Nick Lemmon will run the 400 and 800 meter races while Glen Smith looks to run the 1,600 meter and 800 meter events. Jordan Weiland will run sprints. Strong prospects from the freshmen class include sprinter Colton Francis and discus thrower Hunter Hagen. Sanger pointed to Osage, Garner and Forest City as strong opponents in the North Iowa Conference. This year’s conference meet, which will be the last NIC event, will be held in Belmond-Klemme on May 11, with a rain date scheduled for May 12.

Sprinters look strong for Indians Bob Link

Spring Sports 2015‌

FOREST CITY – With strong leadership from its senior class one year ago, the Forest City boys track team will be looking for some new leaders this season – fortunately they have a group of 53 prospects preparing for the new season. One year ago the Indians qualified for state in seven events. Grant Lehmann, Chad Ullman and Tyler Putney, the team’s individual event qualifiers have all graduated. Fortunately several underclassmen ran legs on the three relays that qualified for state. Senior Tanner Thompson returns after running a leg on the state qualifying distance medley relay and the 4 X 200 meter relay. Senior Mitch Krein ran a leg on the statequalifying Indian 4 X 800 meter relay. Junior Timmy Thompson was also a runner on the 4 X 200

Head Coach Mallory Ziesmer has 16 golfers, nine returning from last year, on this year’s team. Junior Andrew Rust, who placed fourth in last year’s NIC tournament, and sophomore Jacob Wilson who was sixth, look to be the team leaders. Rust and Wilson were both all-conference players. Other top finishers whose score contributed to the tournament victory included Jordan Cantu and Nathan Theel. The Indians will look to replace their only graduate Dan Melby.
