Green Devils return letter winners DEB NICKLAY

Of The Press-News‌

OSAGE — It couldn’t be a better season for Osage boys’ track coach Scott Hoppel. Hoppel, who begins his 13th year as coach, knows he has almost 20 returning letter winners from last year – and over half of them are seniors. “We have a great senior class that has had a lot of success in a variety of sports through the years and I am looking forward to an exciting track season,” he said. “And, we have good numbers with our junior and sophomore classes who will provide some needed depth. We have 38 young men who are all a key part of our program.” His squad posted a third placing at the North Iowa Conference meet last season, just two points shy of co-champions, Forest City and Lake Mills. The squad placed second at the district meet. More good news: He returns three of four state qualifiers on each of the shuttle hurdle relay, 4X200

Of The Press-News‌

OSAGE — Osage High School head girls’ track coach Tom Muller begins his third season with high anticipation and high numbers – he has 42 athletes out for the Green Devils this season. He has good talent, in both distances and in field events. His sprint medley team was a state qualifier in 2013, as was his distance medley. “We hope to compete at all meets and score points in every event,” he said. “I expect our older girls to lead us and have some young girls who fill in and really help us out in the distance and hurdle events,” he said. Amy Uhrmacher is his assistant coach.

OSAGE BOYS’ GOLF

Green Devils’ program has experience DEB NICKLAY

Of The Press-News‌

OSAGE — Gone is the rebuilding year of 2013, says boys’ Green Devils golf coach Eric Goddard. “Last year was a year with a lot of new faces playing varsity for the first time; we had to replace the entire team from the season before,” he said. The team, as result, struggled with inconsistent play and finished the season with a 0-12 record and an eighth placing in the North Iowa Conference. But this year he welcomes back senior Izak Christensen, who had a 48.7 average last year. He will be joined by seniors Jeff Weber and Carter Roggensack. Goddard expects “a few freshmen to step in and contribute this season.” Goddard, in his 12th season, is assisted by Chad Erickson.

Green Devils return good nucleus DEB NICKLAY

Of The Press-News‌

OSAGE — The Osage girls’ golf squad comes back to the 2014 season with both experience and power. Coach Eric Goddard said “we return with a good nucleus, so my expectations are pretty high for this season.” “I feel like we have a few girls who are capable of doing some very good things individually as well as team-wise.” Providing some of that confidence is the return of senior Kelsey Ott and sophomore Courtney Tusler, who had 53 and 53.7 averages last season. “Kelsey placed second in conference and Courtney placed fourth,” he added. Other returning letter winners include Taylor Dohlman and Tatum Midlang.

ST. ANSGAR — St. Ansgar High School boys’ track returns “with good numbers and we expect to be competitive,” said longtime coach Drew Clevenger. “We have a good group of seniors that have provided us with great leadership early in the season.” The boys will get a taste of the season on Monday, April 7, when they open the year with a co-ed meet at Osage. Clevenger and company

are intent to make their leadership and experience work for the squad. The Saints got whistled out of its fifth straight Corn Bowl Conference title by one point in 2013. ST. ANSGAR — Saints’ girls’ track coach Phil Baldus is excited about his 2014 season, as he welcomes back a strong corps of girls who were Corn Bowl Conference champs in 2013. Several have state meet experience in both track and field events. Melanie Gerbig, a junior, and Taylor Hulshizer, finished 1-2 in the shot put in last year’s conference meet; Paige Salz was second in the discus throw at conference. Hannah Goplerud and Tess Mayer, both state qualifiers, will contribute in the sprint relays. Mayer will also be a key hurdler for the team. Both Mayer and Jessi Hansen competed at state in the shuttle relays. Natalie Halfman is one of the state’s top 2A runners in the 400 meters and 800 meters, and finished fourth in the 400 and third in the 800 in the state contest. “Wherever she runs, we’ll be tough,” said Baldus.
