F.C. boys track team has some gaps in sprints, distance events Lovick says team strong FC TRACK: FROM P.2 Kasper said. The Indians will have some gaps to fill with their sprinters, Kasper said. Both Cole Anderson and Montgomery held those positions last year. “We’ll probably have to rely on some younger kids in the sprints,”
Kasper said. “But several kids are stepping up to fill those spots.” In the middle distances, the Indians have many prospects, but will be anchored by veterans like Krein, Riley Moore, Jake Thompson, Westerberg and Mathiasen. The distance events are another area where
the Indians have some holes. But sophomore Chad Ullmann will be counted on heavily in both the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters. “He’s really stepped up into the distance events,” Kasper said. Ullmann emerged as the top runner this fall on the Indian boys cross country team.
Kasper says another asset his team has shown thus far has been leadership. “We have some veterans and some younger kids who are taking on those roles,” he said.
West Hancock expects strengths in individual events WH TRACK: FROM P.3 in the open 800 meters with a second place finish. Eckels got bumped out of the state meet by some complex qualifying rules. “We would have had more kids qualify for state if they had just taken the top 12 kids in each class,” Sanger said. “That’s what they’ve decided to do this year.” Other sprinters for the
Eagles will be Devin Richter, Ben Kreitlow and Seth Goepel. “We think we’ll have a pretty good lineup there,” Sanger said. “Seth and Devin are relatively new to the program.” The Eagles should also be set in the middle distances, with the exception of the 4x800 relay, Sanger said. Some of the runners projected for the 400 and 800 events include
Eckels, Drew Redenius, and possibly Joey DeHart. In the distance events, Sanger said, senior Zach Paulus is new to the program but shows promise “He’s been running well so far, and he’s really working hard at it,” Sanger said. “DeHart will also compete in the distance events.” The Eagles finished third in the North Iowa Conference meet last
season and fourth at districts. Sanger would like to improve both finishes this spring. “It looks like Osage will be the team to beat in the conference,” Sanger said. “Forest City finished just ahead of us last year and we’d like to reverse that this year. North Iowa could also have some strong athletes in individual events.”
F.C. girls hope for regional qualifiers FC GIRLS TRACK: FROM P.4 Jackson added that several freshmen could see varsity time in 2012. They include Morgan Kingston, Rachel Koch, Maddie Buffington and Amanda Wilson. Koch will be a factor in the sprints and the 400 meter run while Emma Sougstad could also help in the sprints and sprint relays. Wilson will also help out in the sprints, Jackson said. If the Indians are lacking at any events it might be some of the field events, including the long jump and high jump. “We’ll probably have to
go with some of our younger athletes in those events,” Jackson said. “It will be fill by committee, at least early in the season.” In the 1,500 and 3,200 meter events, Jackson said senior Victoria Sopko and Autumn Busta will provide solid entrants. “We’re looking for good things from this team,” Jackson said. “We want to place well at the conference meet, then qualify as many athletes as we can at regions for state.” File photo by Chris Todd

Indians last season. “I’m glad that Joey has already decided where he’ll play next year,” Lovik said. “I think that will take some pressure off him and he’ll just be able to relax and enjoy the game.” O’Rourke was the Indians No. 2 scorer in most meets last season. Lovik said he has plenty of potential. “He hits the ball a long way off the tee,” Lovik said. “And over

Things are a little different with the Forest City High boys team, which returns three varsity starters. Lost to graduation, coach Mallory Lovik said, were seniors Dan Rust, Jacob Tweeten and Zach Lundgren. Lovik said Rust was her No. 3 golfer last year while Tweeten and Lundgren were her No. 5 and 6 players, respectively. Last season, the Indian boys qualified for the state golf tournament as a team. “The guys had a great season last spring,” Lovik said. “They pretty much surpassed all my expectations, but they were a dedicated and hard-working group all season.” The varsity returnees are senior Joey Dakken, and juniors Thomas O’Rourke and Adam Busta. Dakken was the number one golfer for the
the offseason and so far this season I’ve been impressed with how hard he’s been working on his short game. “If he can ever get all part of his game together, he’s capable of putting up some very low scores.” Busta was the Indians’ No. 4 player most of last season. Lovik also likes his game. “He’s a very quiet leader for us,” she said. “And he has a solid mental approach to his game.” While Lovik says she has high expectations for the group coming back, she doesn’t set any specific goals. “I think we just want to get better with every practice and every meet,” she said. “And we set our goals on a daily basis. If you do that, then the rest of your goals should take care of themselves.”

Numbers increase for West Hancock boys track Sanger says team shows promise for the season BY CHRIS TODD 2012 SPRING SPORTS The West Hancock boys track team had a rough district meet last season and is hoping to rebound with a better post-season this year. The Eagles sent just two individuals and three events to the Class 1A State meet. They were Pat Smith in the discus, and Aric Siegrist in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs. Smith was eighth at state last year and is looking for a return trip to state while Siegrist graduated last spring and is running track and cross country for North Iowa Area Community College. “Our numbers were down a little last year but they’re up this spring,” said Eagle boys track and field coach Bob Sanger. “And we’ve got some new kids out and, so far, they’ve shown some promise.” Last season, Sanger had some trouble filling out his relay rosters but that shouldn’t be the case this year. “The only question mark there is our 4x800 relay,” Sanger said. “We still need to find some kids who can compete in that event.” The Eagles will be led in most meets by their weight men. And Smith isn’t the only shot and disc thrower the Eagles have back. Junior Chris Schleuger will throw the shot and is trying out the discus this spring, while Colbie Harms will throw both. “We expect all three guys to score a lot of points

Both Chris and Colbie were close last year.” Senior Jake Patterson will return and perform in the hurdle and shuttle hurdle relays as well as the high jump. Senior sprinter Zach Schleuger hopes to wrap up a prolific sports career at West Hancock. “Zach is another athlete who has a chance for state,” Sanger said. “He’ll compete in the 100 and 200 dashes and the sprint relays. He could also be one of our shuttle hurdle runners.”

That event should be a strong one for the Eagles, Sanger said. Returning from the team that was third at districts last year are Ben Ruter, Patterson and Zach Schleuger. Also returning to run the hurdles is Jacob Hejlik. Sanger added that Ruter will also compete in the sprints and sprint relays. Another veteran returning is junior Josiah Eckels, who finished just out of the money for state last year

Miller is the lone senior on this year’s girls team. “Some of the younger golfers are really doing well right now,” Miller said. “They’re all showing up to practice every day and putting a lot of work in.” Timmerman talked about his two top upperclassmen. “Melissa is probably more reserved than Jon and not quite as vocal,” Timmerman said. “But both do a great job of taking on leadership roles.” Burgardt is just a junior this year and says a few members of this year’s Eagle boys team are just beginners. “I’m just trying to help the younger guys correct basic things like the swing,” he said. “They’ve all come a long way just since the start of practice two and a half weeks ago.” Last season, Burgardt was an all-North Iowa Conference golfer and made the section meet. This year, he wants to get one step further.”

“I really want to get down to state this year,” he said. “The strongpoint of my game is probably my irons but I could still use some work on my putting.” “Jon is pretty long and accurate off the tee, and he’s got a pretty good iron and chipping game,” Timmerman said. “Last year, he left some good rounds out on the course because he missed some birdie and par putts and didn’t score as high as he could have. But he’s been working hard at it.” Timmerman said Miller is very long off the tee and is an excellent putter. “And her short game is good but she’s just got to be more consistent in hitting greens in regulation,” the coach said. “Both Jon and Melissa are going to have strong seasons, and our younger golfers are lucky they have them to look up to.”

Anderson. “Those three runners will also be strong in the open 800,” Jackson said. “It gives us depth in that event and we have high hopes for all those runners.” Also qualifying for state last year was the shuttle hurdle relay team. That team returns intact and includes Molly Lewison, Jessica Tweeten, Jessica Kingston and Busta. Jessica Kingston also qualified for state in the 400 meters, taking second place at districts with a time of 1 minute, 7.72 seconds.
BY CHRIS TODD 2012 SPRING SPORTS BRITT - Jon Burgardt and Melissa Miller might not be totally familiar leading their respective West Hancock golf teams this spring, but they are doing it nevertheless. Both were the top golfers on last year’s teams, and each are surrounded this year by younger teammates. “We have a lot of inexperience this season,” said West Hancock girls and boys golf coach Jim Timmerman. Thursday afternoon, Miller was golfing with a sophomore teammate, Cassie Jackson. “Cassie has really improved her game from last year,” Miller said. “Basically, I just try to instill some of our younger golfers with the confidence they’ll need to get better. “And I let them know that I’m there if they want any pointers on driving or chipping and putting, for instance,” she said.

Indians in the field events. “They’ll be a solid 1-2 punch for us in the shot and discus,” Jackson said. “We look forward to them scoring a lot of points for us this year.” Last season, Chapin took second at districts in the discus with a toss of 111-feet-80inches and added a third place in the shot put with a toss of 35-5. That got the Indians off to a good start at districts and it continued with the 4x800 relay taking third place and qualifying for state. A leading role
MS-75512
BY CHRIS TODD 2012 SPRING SPORTS FOREST CITY — Forest City High girls track and field coach Scott Jackson says his team can challenge for a North Iowa Conference title this season, despite heavy losses to graduation last spring. “West Hancock will probably be the favorite in our conference,” Jackson said. “But we expect to be right in that mix to finish in the top half of the conference if not higher.” The Indians return eight athletes who qualified for the Class 2A State Meet last year. “We have a good solid corps returning,” Jackson said. “Even though we don’t have a lot of seniors, the seniors that will return will be good leaders for this team. They’ve already shown that.” The Indians this year will be led by senior hurdler/400-meter dash runner Amanda Busta. Last season, Busta emerged as one of the top junior hurdlers in Class 2A after placing at state in that event. Busta also qualified for state in the 400 hurdles and was a member of the Indians’ state-qualifying 4x400 and shuttle hurdle relay teams. “Amanda just goes out all the time, whether it’s a fundamental drill in practice or a meet,” Jackson said. “She leads by the example she sets and is a great role model for some of our younger girls.” Another senior Maranda Chapin, qualified for state last year in both the shot put and the discus. Eagle girls track should have good results
Leaping higher BY CHRIS TODD 2012 SPRING SPORTS FOREST CITY — Jacob Gapp stands just 5-feet10 inches. But the Forest City senior can high jump a lot higher than that. He had a leap of 6-feet-7 inches as a junior last year and that tied the school record. “When you’re on the runway, and the bar’s set at 6-6 or 6-7, that looks really high, he said last week. “But you just have to put that out of your mind and concentrate on what you need to do and your technique. Gapp has qualified for the Class 3A state meet each of his freshman, sophomore and junior years. He has specific goals for his senior season. “I want to make Drake Relays this year, because it will be my first time there, he said. “And I want to jump at least 6-8 so I can hold the school record alone. After that, I want to qualify for the state meet and place well there in May. During his first year as a freshman, Gapp showed promise by leaping a best height of six feet. His sophomore year, he increased that to 6-3. Then there was the 6-7 leap last year, which occurred at the North Iowa Conference meet. “The weather wasn’t that good, but that particular day, my steps and my timing just happened to be really on, he said. According to Forest City boys track coach Ken Kasper, Gapp has a unique way of jumping. “First of all, he’s able to jump very high with a good vertical leap, Kasper said. “Second, he’s able to hang up in the air for longer than most jumpers. At state his sophomore year, Gapp jumped 6-6 to claim third place in Class 3A. That particular day, the high jump runway had to be stripped of water by a squeegee several times because of a hard rain.

F.C. girls golf to rebuild; boys team returns top players BY CHRIS TODD 2012 SPRING SPORTS The Forest City boys and girls golf teams are looking for strong seasons again this spring, according to the two coaches. The girls team, coached by Tom Pauley, will be in a bit of a rebuilding mode. The team lost four seniors through graduation last spring and return just one varsity starter in junior Bailey
Sheimo. “We’re looking for some girls to step it up and contribute at the varsity level,” Pauley said. “It’s still early in the season, so we still have a lot of work to do. We think we have some kids who can eventually contribute.” Pauley said Sheimo had an up and down last year but is capable of leading this year’s team with some low scores. “We’re looking for more consisten-
cy from Bailey this year, just in terms of round to round,” he said. “She has a good game and a good swing and now she just needs to go out there and work hard at it.” Pauley said Sheimo hits the ball straight for the most part. “That’s one of the assets of her game,” Pauley said. “She can work a little more on her short game.” Pauley said the team’s goal this season is just to keep getting better as
individuals and as a team. “We’ll probably take our lumps early in the season,” he said. “It’s probably going to be a learning process, especially early. “It will be a challenge to keep their minds positive when things aren’t going well. The Eagles will also have some newcomers on the team. They include freshman Michaela Andreasen, sophomore Alissa Lauderback and sophomore Marilou Zamago.

BY CHRIS TODD 2012 SPRING SPORTS BRITT - Jon Burgardt and Melissa Miller might not be totally familiar leading their respective West Hancock golf teams this spring, but they are doing it nevertheless.
F.C. boys track team has some gaps in sprints, distance events Lovick says team strong FC TRACK: FROM P.2 Kasper said.
