STAR CLASS
What is Star Class? lobe Gazette’s Star Class event salutes excellence among graduating high school seniors. During Star Class, held at North Iowa Area Community Auditorium, we honor and applaud the varied achievements of 230 students from across North Iowa. Faculty, administrators and athletic directors are asked to nominate their top senior students who excel in one of seven categories: mathematics, social sciences, arts, science, music, language and technical education. They are also asked to choose their top male and female athletes. Students selected are celebrated during a special event held at North Iowa Community Auditorium. Special recognition is also given to our Mike Burford Courage Award recipients, and our Partners in Education Money To Learn Scholarship winners. All students are featured in this special section of the Globe Gazette. The event is made possible by Partners in Education sponsors who, in addition to the Globe Gazette, are First Citizens National Bank, CL Tel, North Iowa Area Community College, Landfill of North Iowa and Walmart Super Center.

To accomplish this you must stay in touch with your North Iowa roots and we encourage you to do this in many ways. Today’s technology allows you to follow local activities even when you are half way around the world. One of the best ways is by accessing globegazette.com. The technology has changed - a lot - but Mark Twain expressed it well: “The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can’t read them.” Take advantage of what is available. Being an adult also means knowing and expecting that you will make mistakes. Those mistakes may turn into the nightmares that you look back on and laugh about later in life. Those mistakes are life’s lessons. Learn from them. From college, those life lessons followed me into my work life. Those lessons included things like the importance of trust, collaboration, respect, empathy for others, dependability, hard work. I could go on and on; but, you will discover your own list of lessons soon enough. My thoughts for you … find your courage, follow your dreams, and laugh at your nightmares. Words of wisdom from Lisa Hammond. Thanks, Lisa.

what I would or wouldn’t eat, what I would or wouldn’t drink, and who my friends were. Now, as an adult and having experienced working with young adults, I realize that being an adult has a lot more to do with courage than I ever imagined. As you begin life as an adult, you need the courage to make the right choices based on the values you grew up with. You need the courage to say yes to those things you believe in when others disagree with you. You must find the courage to say “no” when you know that a particular action is not the best thing for your future. And, you have to develop the courage to go against the norm when it makes sense and to have a voice for what you believe in.

From 2 asm; Ben has definitely got that ‘it’ factor,” Politis said. Nettleton plans to earn his general education two-year degree at North Iowa Area Community College before heading to Iowa State University, “the premiere meteorology college,” Nettleton said. It is clear that when Nettleton is drawn to something, he goes after it with enthusiasm. When devastating floods hit North Iowa in 2008, Nettleton called the United Way of North Central Iowa to find out how he could help. He spent days cleaning out flood-ravaged homes. “At one time I thought I wanted to be a police officer, so I did police ride-a-longs,” he said. “Then I thought I’d like to be a pilot,” and spent time at a lot of air shows. But meteorology, he said, provides “more interaction with people, I think. Someday, I’d like to climb the ladder to a larger station,” he said. “I think meteorology is it,” he said. “Weather affects every one of us — how it affects our jobs, our travel. There is a lot of science, a lot of physics to it, and I like that.” Inside Star Class • Arts ...........................4-7 • Language ..................7-9 • Math .............. ..........9-11 •Music.................. 11, 14,15

MANLY — There isn’t anything that Michael Faught does anymore that surprises Bill Shafer. No matter what athletic platform Faught, a senior at Central Springs High School,
performs on he excels. For Shafer, the athletic director at the school, it goes far beyond being an all-conference performer. It goes back to birth, when Faught was born with a rare defect called Poland Syndrome. His symptoms of the disease
affect the right side of his upper body, including a shorter forearm, smaller hand, shorter fingers with webbing and bone deformity, missing the pectorals major and minor muscle and underlying rib and sternum See COURAGE, Page 5

achel Hoskins knows about goals — and gold. The same goes for Curtis Marker, a senior at Rockford Senior High School. The pair’s dedication and commitment to helping others has not only brought them awards, but also this year’s Money To Learn scholarships. Each will receive $500 to attend classes at North Iowa Area Community College. Their selection was made based on an essay and other eligibility requirements. Their essay topic was about the most meaningful moment in their lives. Hoskins, an Algona High School senior, spent two months working with a special needs friend who wanted to be a cheerleader. “Designing a routine she could perform was challenging. We chose two cheers. Posters were constructed to decorate her walker and we wore matching uniforms.” When Hoskins escorted her friend to the Special Olympics and when they performed their routine, “the entire crowd cheered with us, which was an awesome sound. She smiled from ear to ear.” The duo earned gold. See GOALS, Page 6

COURAGE: Faught adapted and succeeded From 4 deformity. He underwent two surgeries as an infant to release the webbing between his fingers. “Many said that there was no way Michael could succeed at sports with his physical disabilities but Michael never gave it a second thought,” Shafer said. Faught has been a sports nut since the age of 5. He played football, wrestled and was a regular on the baseball diamond. No matter the sport, his determination led to success. As a wrestler, despite not having muscles for strength in his chest and having a smaller hand, he racked up more than 100 career wins on the varsity team. His wrestling career, though, was cut short just before sectionals this year due to an injury to his sternum that caused chest pains. As a wide receiver on the football team he wore a special pad underneath his jersey. His two receiving touchdowns led the team as
About the Burford award The Mike Burford Courage Award is named in honor of the late Mason City High School wrestling coach Mike Burford, who fought a brave fight against cancer before dying in 1990. The award recognizes student athletes who have shown tremendous courage in facing significant health and/or family challenges. Nominations are made by high school athletic directors and principals in North Iowa. he turned into a three-year varsity letterwinner. His passion, though, has always been baseball. Of course it hasn’t been easy. Finding a glove for his small hand and developing a technique for squeezing the ball into the glove was no easy task. But he adapted and succeeded. Last year he was a second-team all-conference left-handed pitcher as the Panthers were crowned Corn Bowl Conference champs. “Seems as though the countless hours he drug his dad outside to play catch did pay off,” Shafer said. The journey to being a
multi-sport high school athlete is coming to an end. So, too, are the days when people would doubt and question his ability to compete at a high level. Over the years he has shown he belongs no matter what hurdles stood in his way. “His theory was he could do anything the other kids were doing,” Shafer said. “He would just have to work twice as hard, and he did. “Not only did Michael participate in all these sports but also he proved he could excel in them by figuring out specialized techniques that worked for him and working twice as hard as the next guy.”

“Our family will save $7,238 because our son chose NIACC first.”
*
When he’s finished with college, he’ll have the same college degree as students who started at a 4-year school. By choosing NIACC for the first two years and transferring to a 4-year school, our son is saving our family $7,238.* That’s a huge difference in these difficult economic times.
Choose NIACC first. Call 1-888-GO NIACC www.niacc.edu/parents *Average difference between two years tuition at NIACC and two years average tuition at regents universities in Iowa. (based on Fall 2010 tuition and fees) MS-31739
