What is Star Class? The Globe Gazette’s Star Class event, now in its 20th year, recognizes the “best of the best” among North Iowa’s graduating high school seniors. The Globe Gazette for a number of years sponsored a spring event honoring North Iowa athletes. In 1995 the editorial staff decided it was time to celebrate North Iowa students who were the top of their class in academic pursuits. The seven categories — mathematics, social sciences, arts, science, music, language and technical education — were determined with the help of school officials. A couple of years later Star Class grew to include top male and female athletes.
The first few programs were held at E.B. Stillman Auditorium in Clear Lake, but as school participation grew, Star Class moved to the North Iowa Area Community Auditorium at North Iowa Community College. On Sunday, May 3, we pay tribute to the achievement of just over 200 students who are featured in this special section of the Globe Gazette. It is not often that we sit among so much potential. We feel confident that these are our next legislators and doctors, teachers and scientists, with some possibly ending up in jobs that haven’t been created yet in this rapidly-changing world. Special recognition is also given to our Partners
in Education Money To Learn Scholarship winners and Mike Burford Courage Award recipients. The Mike Burford Courage Award is named in honor of the late Mason City High School wrestling coach who fought bravely against cancer before his death in 1990. The award recognizes student athletes who have shown tremendous courage in facing significant health and/or family challenges. Nominations are made by area high school athletic directors and principals. Star Class is made possible by Partners in Education sponsors who, in addition to the Globe Gazette, are CLTel, NIACC and Landfill of North Iowa.

NIACC president salutes the ‘best of the best’ STEVEN SCHULZ
President, North Iowa Area Community College
Star Class 2015: It is my pleasure to congratulate you on being recognized as a member of the Star Class of 2015. NIACC is proud to be a sponsor of the Star Class program that recognizes the “best of the best” among North Iowa’s high school seniors. I commend you on your hard work and commitment to excellence that has earned you this welldeserved recognition. You should be proud of your accomplishments, but you should
NIACC President Steven Schulz be even more proud of the fact that you were nominated by a teacher, administrator or athletic
director to represent your high school as a Star Class honoree. As a former K-12 teacher, principal and superintendent, I know how important it is to recognize the outstanding students who serve as role models for younger students. You have not only been recognized for individual achievement but as a distinguished young person worthy of representing your school and community in the form of this public recognition. I encourage you to take this opportunity to reflect on your school experience
and thank the teacher, coach, or administrator who made a difference in your life and contributed to your success in school. Don’t forget about your parents. You are being recognized for your individual accomplishments, but it would be an oversight to not recognize the role your parents have played in your success. I was lucky to be born to parents who were willing to sacrifice on my behalf. I was lucky to have parents who valued education and hard work, and they expected me to do the same. I can unequivocally tell
you my parents were the most influential teachers in my life, and I owe any personal and professional success I may have had in life to the foundation and support they provided me. Take time over the next few weeks to celebrate your good work and this Star Class of 2015 recognition. Revisit your school experiences with friends, reflect on your life, your future, and take a few minutes to thank those who have helped you along the way. We at North Iowa Area Community College would welcome the
opportunity to serve the “best of the best” as you plan for the next steps in your educational career. Please do not hesitate to contact NIACC if we can assist in any way. Best wishes.

Speaker: Find career you love Johanson, O’Donnell are ASHLEY MILLER
ashley.miller@globegazette.com
CLEAR LAKE — A Clear Lake professional speaker who will give the keynote address at Star Class 2015 wants to remind students the importance of doing good for others and finding a career they love. “When Okerlund you look back at life 40 years from now, the things you remember most are the things you did for someone else,” said David Okerlund, who has been presenting his message full time for the past 30 years. Okerlund, who has given around 2,500 speeches to over a million
people, is no stranger to Star Class. He was the keynote speaker at the inaugural event in 1995 and returned three more times prior to this year. “It’s as exciting as the first one,” he said. “It’s a magical event with the crème de la crème, the best of the best.” He enjoys the fact Star Class students are “hungry to listen and eager to learn.”
ALTHOUGH OKERLUND participated in debate and interpretative speech in high school and college, he found himself in the role of assistant administrator of a 350bed trauma hospital in Nebraska. “I wanted to do something I loved and not be a desk jockey,”
Okerlund said. After resigning his position, he began speaking at farmers’ cooperatives and cattle associations as he worked his way up. Eventually his new career went national.
OKERLUND HAS SINCE founded Creative Communications Institute and has trained or written speeches for politicians, sports stars and military personnel. A barn on his property serves as a dual guest home and training center. He averages about 70 speeches a year to agriculture, insurance, banking, healthcare and other professional associations and has authored four books. He and his wife, Twila, have two grown children.
Money to Learn Scholars He believes college will provide a good foundation for lifelong agricultural learning.

MASON CITY — Two North Iowa graduating seniors have earned the Globe Gazette’s Partners in Education Money to Learn scholarships to North Iowa Area Community College. McCaully Johanson of West Hancock High School and Jenna O’Donnell of Riceville High School will each receive $500. The awards were made on the basis of required essays with applications themed, “Why I think it is important to further my education.” Both seniors said education will help advance careers they already have.

HOWARD QUERY Publisher/Editor
It’s always a challenge to write this short tribute each year — because most of you have “heard it all before.” Each and every one of you is more than a beginner when it comes to success. You have already achieved much — what haven’t you heard already? Well, consider this a reminder, then. And, my wish for each of you. You may have noticed that it is never just one thing that makes people a success. It is a combination of lots of things — quality instruction, caring teachers, supportive parents, brainpower and a willingness to work hard — and then work even harder. The late football coach Vince
Lombardi said it well: “The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.” I know you know about success; each of you has succeeded in one of our Star Class academic areas, or in athletics. My guess is that you are also involved in a number of activities. Most successful people are. But for all of that, this is my wish for you: Acknowledge those people who helped to get you to your seat today. We do not live in a vacuum. Success is not only counted in lists to be placed on a resume, or a college application, but on our hearts as well. Relationships you forge today are also bonds of support that will help you in the future.
Those strong arms will help carry you through the failures that are a part of any life; those failures that turn into lessons; and those lessons that turn into successes. We never do it alone. So here is my wish — and reminder — for you today: Give your parents, grandparents, and friends a hug today and say “Thanks.” And, save a bit of celebration for yourself.
Congratulations, Star Class 2015!

For Sydney Shreckengost, beating cancer part of high school journey JARED PATTERSON
jared.patterson@globegazette.com
SHEFFIELD — For Sydney Shreckengost, there are times when the reality of being a cancer survivor suddenly seems all too real – again. It was her junior year and the West Fork girls basketball team was playing at Rockford in a pivotal Corn Bowl Conference game. It was cancer night that evening, and prior to the opening tip, cancer survivors were recognized. Shreckengost was included. And her tenacity and willingness to fight back have helped earn her the Mike Burford Courage Award at this year’s Star Class. She remembers that night well. “I didn’t play good at all that night,” the senior says with a shrug. She had a good reason to struggle.
get it out.” When Sydney found out she had cancer, there was a brief moment of sadness. Tears were shed. But quickly, her attitude changed. “I went in that morning for surgery, came out, woke up from surgery and it was like, ‘You have cancer and it’s gone,’ ” she said. Tests on her lymph nodes came back clean, then the healing process began.

Connor Gordon, a senior at St. Ansgar, was diagnosed with leukemia as a seventh-grader. He fought it off once, only for it to return again as an eighth-grader.

ST. ANSGAR — For most middle school students, the biggest worry in his or her life may be about results of a test or how much homework is yet to be done. For Connor Gordon, those kinds of things were furthest from his mind. Gordon, a senior at St. Ansgar, was diagnosed with leukemia as a seventh-grader. He fought it off once, only for it to return again as an eighth-grader. But being the person he was, he was never going to give in. Gordon beat it again and has never looked back. His fight and determination to not let it change who he was or what he will be is why he has been named a 2015 Mike Burford Courage Award recipient for Star Class. “Every year it seems like everything has slowly gotten better,” Gordon said. “Senior year, I‘ve soaked it up and it’s been
great so far.” GETTING TO THIS POINT was far from easy. After the initial diagnosis in seventh grade, Gordon had no idea what was going on or what he could do about it and his only reaction is one shared by millions of people who have been put in the same position: “Really scared.” “I didn’t really know what was going on exactly because I hadn’t really known what cancer was,” Gordon said. “It pretty much changed my aspect of life completely.” Included in those changes was basically a year of school wiped out along with other major lifestyle changes. Gordon went through treatment and the cancer went into remission. The remission didn’t last long, however, and the cancer was back by the time Gordon was in eighth grade. He was back to square one. More treatment came and went, and after another tough battle Gordon went back into remission but not without a price. Battling and beating cancer twice left him battered. “I took so many college classes while I was in high school that I completed a full-year of college by the time I graduated from high school. My passion is business and entrepreneurship. I’m a full-time student at NIACC and will have my two-year degree in one year. In the fall, I plan to transfer to a four-year university. I love it here at NIACC! I’m getting a high-quality education while also saving my family a lot of money. As you prepare for your future, Picture yourSELFie @ NIACC!”
