Mohawks have pieces in place for deep run By JARED PATTERSON jared.patterson@globegazette.com
MASON CITY — There’s not a day that goes by where the Mason City baseball team doesn’t think about the game. The game, of course, referring to a Class 4A substate final last year against Marshalltown at Roosevelt Field. A 3-0 lead in the sixth inning had the Mohawks on the cusp of the state tournament. A five-run rally over the final two innings left the Mohawks feeling like the guy who takes a cannonball to the gut. “I think about it everyday,” said Jake Peter. Added Lee Gealow, “Until we get past that point it will rack our brain.” It was two days after that game when the players showed up again at Roosevelt in preparation for this year. If there was anything in their power they could do to wipe away the pain they felt after that loss they were going to do it. Just days away from their season opener, the Mohawks have a team in place with as lofty of expectations as any team Troy Rood has coached, not to mention a chip on their shoulders. “We’ll be as good as we work to be,” said Brandon Platts, a legit D-1 prospect whose fastball is clocked in the upper 80s. “We’ve put in tons of hard work in the offseason. We can’t listen to how good people think we are going to be.” The Mohawks roster features only three seniors (Gealow, Seth Harmon and Jordan Strottman) but they hardly lack experience.

Gealow and Harmon are joined by junior standouts Platts, Peter, Landon Schultz, Aaron Overbeck, Robert Swenson and Ryan Voves. On paper, the Mohawks may look like a young team. Look a little deeper at how much varsity baseball this group has played and it’s hardly the case. “It’s amazing what another year does no matter how experienced you are,” Gealow said. “We have just as much experience as any other team.” With that comes a quiet confidence. “There’s a swagger in their step,” coach Troy Rood said. “A swagger that they’ve put in the time and they’re good. But at the same time nothing is given. In a one-anddone scenario the ball can take a funny bounce, but this group respects the game. They’ve paid the price.” When asked what the goal of the team is this year, in unison, Platts, Peter and Gealow said the same thing: “State cham-

pionship.” “When was the last summer state title here? 1972?” Peter asked. He was correct. The Mohawks have fielded some great teams since (in recent history five of the past seven teams have won at least 30 games) but none have had the mantle of state champions when the season ended. “That’s where we could sperate ourselves from the other teams,” said Gealow, who admitted the recent success of Mohawk teams is one of the things that drives him on a daily basis. But the Mohawks know nothing is guaranteed. All they need to do is look back at last year to reiterate that point. “I think some of us can still feel that game,” Peter said. “We want to get back on the field. We all want a state championship. We’ve been thinking about that since we were little.”
MASON CITY — It was this winter when Brandon Platts and Jake Peter took a trip to Arizona State for a baseball camp. The two rubbed shoulders with one of baseball’s all-time greats in Barry Bonds, a Sun Devil legend. “He gave me some tips on hitting,” Platts said. “It was a good experience.” While Bonds offered his expertise in the batter’s box it’s Platts’ right arm that has college coaches salivating. As the letters from across the country rolled in, Platts talked with former Mohawk great John Lee (who committed to Nebraska out of high school) about the recruiting process. “He told me that he worried too much about the recruiting process as a junior,” Platts said. That conversation hasn’t been forgotten by Platts. Sure, he’s heard from the likes of Virginia Tech, Missouri, Kansas, Baylor and Iowa, but now that the season is about to begin the recruiting talk will take a backRood seat for a while. Same goes for Peter, who’s been in contact with Arizona State and Iowa. “The opinion that I have is when any kid — whether it’s baseball, wrestling or music — has a set a goal and they go after it... How can’t you respect that?” Mason City coach Troy Rood said. Up and down the lineup the Mohawks feature players who will play at the next level. Whether it’s seniors Lee Gealow or Seth Harmon or juniors like Robert Swenson, Landon Schultz, Aaron Overbeck and Ryan Voves, the Mohawks will receive plenty of attention from college scouts this summer. “I think we have some hidden treasures,” Rood said. “You can go up and down our lineup and see a lot of players that can help a college team. That’s something we as coaches can all be proud of.” If there is one thing that Rood can take solace in it is the fact that the college coaches in the stands won’t have an impact on how his team plays. “We’re not going to focus on that stuff,” Peter said. “We are just going to come out and play the way we know how to play and go from there.”

New-look Knights have sights set on Des Moines once again By JARED PATTERSON jared.patterson@globegazette.com
MASON CITY — The 2009 version of the Newman Catholic baseball team was the perfect storm. Perhaps the best hitter in the state? Check. A senior-laden team that had been through the riggers of a varsity baseball season before? Check. A focus needed to win games even with the mantle of being the top team in Class 1A? Check. As the 2010 Knights prep for their season, the memory of that day in Des Moines when they were crowned state champs is never far from their mind. But this year, with nine seniors gone and a new cast of characters set to take center stage, the goal remains the same. “Every single night we Kruckenberg come out here, it’s hot, it’s humid, it’s the best park in 1A... There’s no place I’d rather be playing baseball and wearing a Newman uniform,” senior Carter Kruckenberg said. “Each and every person in the dugout knows what Newman baseball is all about.” Bohl The Knights are about winning. The streak of conference titles sits at 31 years and counting. They won 37 games to one defeat last year, running roughshod over Class 1A competition. With with the likes of Jordan Adams, Jon Lewerke, Thomas Weber and Tyler Nygaard all departing due to graduation, it’s a new group that will have to make their mark. “We may not have the big offensive threat like we had last year,” senior Michael Bohl said. “But I think the pitching will keep the scores low.” Bohl, Drew Verstegen, Josh Luecht and Blake Louscher will all log significant innings for the Knights. The question mark is junior Hunter King.

His availability as a pitcher for this season is up in the air. Even with the question about King, who has the potential to be a front-end pitcher in the Knights’ rotation, coach Tony Adams is optimistic going forward. “It’s a good group. Obviously, we have a lot to replace,” Adams said. “I think the potential is there. If we keep focusing on skills I think we will be alright when it’s said and done.” The Knights return eight letterwinners from last year — four juniors and four seniors — and despite lacking the offensive firepower that was unmatched in Class 1A last year, Adams think there are certain areas where his team can excel. “I think pitching can be a strength,” he
LUVERNE — First year CWL baseball coach Colt Webber knows that he can’t fix a program that hasn’t won more than seven games in a season the last 10 years overnight. “You don’t change a flat tire by changing drivers,” Webber said. “The main thing is to get the kids to buy into what you want to accomplish. “Baseball’s a crazy game and anything can happen any night.” The Panthers, who are coming off of a 4-19 season, return eight letterwinners, giving Webber a good core of players. “We have good athletes who aren’t strangers to the weight room,” Webber said. “As a small school, I’d rather have athletes to make into baseball players than the other way around.” Senior Wesley Steward and junior Jason Carroll headline the group of returnees. Steward led the Panthers with a .381 batting average while Carroll batted .356. “Carroll’s a good athlete,” Webber said. “He’ll play some shortstop and pitch while Steward will either be pitching or catching.” Webber said his main concern is finding enough arms as Steward is the only player on the roster who saw significant time on the mound, sporting a 1-6 record. “It might be rough to start the year,” the coach said. “Pitching is going to be a huge issue for us. High school baseball is all about throwing strikes and playing some defense.” CORNBELT CONFERENCE

said. “Defense will be a strength, too. “I really like this group. We have a lot of potential and a lot of talent but there is also a lot of work ahead of us.” Still, the goal remains the same: The Knights want to be the best team in their class. Kruckenberg said that goal is something that they work for from the first day of practice. “We try to get to mid-season form before the season starts,” he said. “Right now, it’s about working on fundamentals and making sure we have the best chance of winning that first game and take it from there.” “Last year, it didn’t happen overnight. It progressed through the whole year. We played up to our potential at the state tournament. That’s the goal again this year. We want to get back down there and win a state tournament.”

Panthers hope to take next step in 2010 season Central Springs returns key cogs from team that shared conference By JARED PATTERSON jared.patterson@globegazette.com
MANLY — A quick glance at the stats from the returnees on the Central Springs baseball roster and you can see why expectations are high. It’s not like there were no expectations a year ago — the Panthers were co-Corn Bowl Conference champs alongside St. Ansgar — but Ethan Miller and Co. know the opportunity is there for a great year. The Panthers were 22-5 last year and posted a 13-1 mark in the Corn Bowl. “The foundation of our team is solid and should provide for an excellent brand of baseball this season,” said Miller, entering his sixth year as coach. Spencer Behne (.406, 10 doubles, 28 RBI and 19 stolen bases) leads a group of eight returning letter winners. James Michael hit .389 with 27 RBI while Max Lund hit .349 with four home runs and 24 RBI. Jesse Johnson, who stole 27 bases and scored 33 runs, also returns. “The teams on our schedule will be challenging and we will have to be prepared to play at a high level every night,” Miller said. “The goal is to progress throughout the year and to be playing our best baseball when districts start. Hopefully we’ll be able to string a few wins together to advance deep into tournament play.” St. Ansgar, a team that was ranked No. 1 during the season last year in Class 2A, enters the season with a new head coach in Garrett Follmuth. Follmuth, a St. Ansgar graduate, takes over for Devin Schiewsow, who stepped down after the season last year. Nashua-Plainfield was a team that was in the upper echelon of the conference a year ago. The Huskies, though, lost a slew of key players off a team that went 9-5 in conference play last year. No starters return off that team.

CAL’s Pals closing in on 600th victory
SUMMER SPORTS 2010
2009 ALL-AREA SOFTBALL TEAM
CHARLES CITY SOFTBALL
Seven starters return from 17-14 squad By KIRK HARDCASTLE kirk.hardcastle@globegazette.com
LATIMER — Dallas Pals is closing in on career win No. 600. The veteran CAL coach has a career mark of 590402 heading into the 2010 season. And Pals returns seven starters and three other letterwinners from last year’s team that was 1714 and 10-6 in the Iowa Star Conference. “Our strength this year Pals should be our pitching depth,” said Pals, who is 180-183 at CAL. Carley Christiansen Christiansen returns for her senior season after recording a 13-8 record a year ago with 143 innings pitched. Bruns Senior Lindsey Bruns, a shortstop, also returns after leading the Cadets with a .356 average. “On offense, we need to improve our hitting,” Pals said, “but team speed should be a benefit to us on offense.” Pals said defending conference champion Janesville is the favorite again. “They graduated their battery, but their replacements will make them competitive,” Pals said. “The top six in the conference should be close and I doubt anyone will get through the conference season undefeated.” CAL CADETS Coach — Dallas Pals has a career record of 590402 and is 180-183 at CAL. 2009 record — 17-14 overall, 10-6 in the Iowa Star Conference. Comets looking to build off state appearance CHARLES CITY — Charles City softball coach Brian Bohlen had a vision of returning the Comets back to the perennial power they were under legendary coach Jerry Newton. The Comets took a step in that direction last season, qualifying for the Class 3A state tournament in Bohlen’s seventh year at the helm. It was the Comets’ 24th trip to the state tournament in school histor, but their first since 1999. “This has been something I’ve worked a long time for,” Bohlen said following last year’s 5-0 regional final victory over Webster City in Iowa Falls. “Coach Newton has been great. I’ve talked to him after a couple of games and he’s just a great person. “There was some pressure because he was at so many state tournaments, so its nice that I can finally say that all of my hard work has finally paid off.” Charles City dropped all three of its state tournament games, finishing with a 26-13 record. However, bigger and better things could be on the horizon as the Comets return their entire team. In the circle, Leah Gelner and Bree
Hackman both return for their senior seasons. Hackman was a second-team allNortheast Iowa Conference selection while Gelner earned honorable mention all-conference honors. BELMOND — Veteran coach Howard Dorman is returning to the BelmondKlemme softball program after a year away. Dorman said his decision was based on the current state of the program following the dismissal of Jodi Barrus, who led the Broncos to a sixth-place finish at the Class 2A state tournament in her only season at the helm. “We have too good of a softball program to ruin it after one year,” said DorDorman man, who has 51 years of coaching experience. “There were a lot of problems with girls not wanting to go out this year so I decided to return. “I enjoy working with them.” Dorman, whose return comes Tuesday against Algona, won’t have the numbers as he did in the past, but is looking forward to the upcoming season. “We’ll have around 15 girls out so we probably won’t have a JV,” Dorman said. “The main thing is that they have fun and work hard. “We’ll have some veteran girls but we’ll have someone new pitching. The pitching duties will fall on Morgan Kinseth, who will replace Shelby Dougherty. “One problem is we scheduled six games a week which is not ideal with an inexperienced pitcher,” Dorman said. “Hopefully she can hold up. The key is to throw strikes and field the ball.” Kinseth will be the first non-Dougherty in the circle for the Broncos in the last decade. “Shelby’s the best pitcher I’ve coached since probably 1964,” Dorman said. “She was plain tough. Chelsey was a great athlete but she didn’t really focus on pitching. Jacki was good.” Dana Christensen will return behind the plate and Amy Soma will move to first base. “Everyone knows about Dana, but as for Amy, she’s good at anything she does,” Dorman said. Christensen was a firstteam all-North Iowa Conference, IGCA Class 2A North Central all-district and Globe Gazette AllArea team selection. She batted .402 with an on-base percentage of .469 and slugging percentage of .561 for the NIC co-champions, collecting 43 hits with 23 runs, 18 RBIs, 10 doubles, two triples, one home run and stole 13 bases. Kaitlynn Allen will play second base, Kelsey Bock will play shortstop while Shelby Mennenga rounds out the infield at third. Dorman said there are question marks in the outfield.

Indians must replace four regulars FOREST CITY — Forest City has spent most of the past decade at or near the top of the North Iowa Conference softball standings. Year in and year out, the Indians have managed to put quality pitching in the circle and backed it up with an efficient offense. Last season, Forest City was 24-7 overall and shared the conference title with Belmond-Klemme. The Indians, though, lost seven players to graduation, and return just four regulars from that team. “There will be plenty of new faces on the field,” Denny Gilbertson, the Indians fourth-year coach said. “Our goal is to improve each week.” In a sport that can be dominated by pitching and quality defense, especially at the catching position, the Indians should be in good shape. Among the returnees are a pair of pitchers, Maria Levang and Bailey Gilbertson, as well as catcher Kayla Vermedahl. Levang could fill in at first base to help anchor that position. Amanda Busta, a sophomore outfielder, is the other principal returnee for Forest City. “There are some young ladies with raw, unproven talent,” Coach Gilbertson said. “I am excited to see how they develop.” The Indians will have to grow up quickly as many teams throughout the conference return top performers and greater depth. Belmond-Klemme will build around all-state catcher Dana Christensen. Osage brings back five

North Iowa might be one of the league’s more intriguing teams as the Lady Bison return 10 letterwinners, seven of whom are seniors. The Lady Bison finished just 8-18 last season, but Chelsey Swenson and Becca Siemens both return after earning allconference recognition. Lake Mills, another program that has a strong tradition, opens with a new coach, Wade Fridley. The Bulldogs may start a bit slowly since many of the returnees are tied up in spring sports, but they do expect to bring back pitcher Josie Brackey. With most teams entering the season with significant question marks, a wild summer could be in store for the North Iowa Conference. FOREST CITY INDIANS

GREENE — Expectations are high for the North Butler softball team. And they should be for the Bearcats, who return eight starters from last year’s team that placed sixth at the Class 1A state tournament. “We should be very solid,” North Butler coach Isaac Almelien said. “Bobbi (Boomgarden) is one of the best pitchers in the state and she’s backed by a great defense. “We hope to improve our offense from last year.” Boomgarden, a senior right-hander, was a second-team all-state selection a year ago. She was 22-2 with a 0.87 earned run average with 189 strikeouts. Other top returners are seniors Carly Jacobs, Kelly Dolan and Jamie Jacobs — all three were first-team allCorn Bowl Conference selections. Carly Jacobs, a shortstop, hit .356 with 17 RBIs. Almelien said the Bearcats should be in the running for another conference title. They won the league last year with a 14-0 mark. “Other solid teams include Rockford, Nashua-Plainfield, St. Ansgar and Central Springs,” the coach said. Central Springs returns seven starters from last year’s team for veteran coach Belinda Nelson. Six of the seven returners are juniors with infielder Brittney Jost

SUMMER SPORTS 2010 MASON CITY SOFTBALL
LEADING THE WAY Without a senior on roster, M.C. to rely on juniors By KIRK HARDCASTLE kirk.hardcastle@globegazette.com
MASON CITY — Brooke Brunsvold is on maternity leave for the first part of the softball season. But the fifth-year Mason City coach is liking the updates she’s getting from her younger sister (Angela Broderson), who is in charge until Brunsvold returns in mid-June. “I am in constant communication with the coaches and it sounds like practice has been going very well,” Brunsvold said. “It’s strange not being there but we have a great coaching staff and I know they are working on the fundamentals to get ready for the season opener.” Mason City returns nine letterwinners from last year’s team that was 8-32 overall. The Mohawks do not have a senior on the roster so Brunsvold is looking for the junior class to lead the way. Six of the nine returning letterwinners (Cassie Pappas, Melanie Carroll, Kelsie Groth, Megan Eckenrod, Alli Dingman and Allison White) are juniors. “I think our juniors are an amazing asset to our team,” Brunsvold said. “They have a lot of energy and are true leaders. “I look for them to lead our team. Some of them have four years of varsity experience. They are really good about working with the underclassmen and pushing each other.” Brunsvold said she thinks the Mohawks can be pretty strong offensively this summer. “The girls have spent a lot of time hitting in the off season,” the coach said, “and have made a lot of progress since last year. “I think some of our strong hitters are going to be Cassie Pappas, Megan Eckenrod and Callie Snitker. We also have a lot of speed in some of our younger players.” On defense, Brunsvold said White and two eighthgraders — Lexy Pederson and Annika Angel — will handle the pitching duties. White pitched in 13 games last season backing up graduated senior CJ Swenson. “Lexy and Annika are young, but very strong pitchers,” Brunsvold said. “They have been playing on a travel team this spring so they have had to the chance to get some pitching in.” Brunsvold said she likes the potential of this year’s team. “I think we absolutely have potential to be better then last year,” she said. “We have a very competive group of girls, girls that want to win ball games. We are a year older and a year stronger.” Brunsvold said West Des Moines Valley is the CIML Iowa Conference favorite. “Valley is always a tough team, and we will get our first look at them next week,” she said. “Waukee will have extremely strong pitching. The conference is tough, always is. We will go out to win every game. I believe we can compete with anybody in our conference.” BRYON HOULGRAVE/The Globe Gazette

CORWITH — What is a realistic measure for improvement from one year to the next? Last season, the CWL softball team struggled to a 126 mark in a tough Corn Belt Conference. Normally, enthusiasm for a new season would be tempered with a mark like that in the recent past. Jim Fisher, the Panthers fourth-year coach, has reason for some optimism. Last year’s squad relied heavily on young players who now have a season of varsity action under their belts. This season,Fisher will look forward to 10 returning letterwinners with a small but solid core of senior leadership. “With the upper class that returns,we should be better,” Fisher said. Kirsty Riggert is likely the top returning performer, and will likely either catch or appear in the outfield. Jessica Martz and Kelsey Casey are also expected back for their senior campaigns. Alannah Carroll and Maggie Ludwig provide a pair of experienced pitchers.
