just south of Racine, Minn. Kelsey tagged along and saw that John was racing. “I thought, ‘Hmmmm,’” Kelsey recalled with a smile. “I thought, ‘Maybe we should hang out.’ ” John, it turned out, had had his eye on his family friend over the years. John – a dyedin-the-wool Hawkeye enthusiast — did not even hold Kelsey’s being a fervent Iowa State University fan against her. “I always thought she was cute,” he said. John’s proposal was as unique as their story. Their engagement ring is a one-of-a-kind. It was designed and created by one of Kelsey’s college friends who has a metalsmithing studio. The stone is a rhodelite garnet that flashes both red and purple in the light – a combination of their individual birthstones. The couple plans an Aug. 30 wedding at Sacred Heart Church. The selection of the date was as intentional as the design of Kelsey’s ring: The date falls between their respective parents’ wedding dates. The Baldwins married on Aug. 29; the Warringtons on Aug. 31. “I always thought we should marry in October, because maybe the weather would be nicer, but when we realized how close their dates were, we

thought, ‘We have to do this,’” Kelsey said. Since their engagement, the couple has been busy working and planning their life together. Kelsey, a 2006 graduate of Osage High School, is a graduate of Iowa State University and today works as a packaging assistant at A to Z Drying in Osage. John, a St. Ansgar High School and NIACC graduate, works for St. Ansgar Plumbing and Heating.

Love blooms over pop and pizza Deb Nicklay

Of The Press-News‌

Sometimes, fate just seems to step in and take control. In June 2011, Sydney Rae Hein recalled she was working at Casey’s General Store in Osage as the new assistant manager. “I was training on the night shift when Ben came in the store and got a bottle of pop and a slice of pizza. When he came up to the counter I rang his things up and when I looked up to ask him if he needed anything else, we locked eyes and instantly we knew we had a connection.” A month later, Ben Hartogh asked Sydney, a 2009 Arlington (Neb.) High School graduate, out on their first date. “We fell in love and knew we were destined to be together,” she said. On their second anniversary, Ben decided to pop the question. After asking her father, Mike, for permission to marry Sydney, he went on the search for the ring. “After three trips to Mason City, I finally had it in my possession,” Ben

recalled. “Sydney and I kept arguing about where we wanted to go for our twoyear anniversary date and finally decided to try The Old Mill in Austin (Minn.). “The whole way through the meal it was next to impossible for me to hide my grin and I was as nervous as could be. When our meal was finished, I quickly fished the ring up out of my boot and grabbed the bill like I was going to pay and as I walked around the table I dropped to one knee. The look on Sydney’s face was priceless. “I said, ‘Sydney, the last two years have been the best in my life and it would make me the happiest man in the world if you would spend the rest of your life with me, will you marry me?’ and she said, ‘Yes!’ ” Sydney is the daughter of Mike and Ann Hein; Ben is the son of Dave and Mary Hartogh. Sydney attends North Iowa Area Community College and is in the ag sales/service and operations program. She works at Mitchell County Care as

well as Casey’s. Ben holds a John Deere ag tech degree from Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar. He is employed at North Country Equipment in Osage, and at Karl Fox Farms; he also has begun farming his own 200 acres. They plan to marry on Sept. 13, 2014, at the Cedar Valley Memories; reception at Cedar River Complex Events Center. They have purchased an acreage just outside of New Haven where they hope “to have a few cattle around and start a small farm Sydney Rae Hein and Ben Hartogh. and begin our journey,” said Sydney. Ben will continue to work at North Country Equipment, Karl Fox Feedlots, and renting his own farm ground. Sydney will finish school in May 2014, helping with the family farm and show cattle business along with expanding her own herd; she is also looking for a career in her field of study. “We look forward to spending our lives together and starting a family of our own,” she said.

It was a glowing, sparkling proposal Deb Nicklay

Of The Press-News‌

Tracy Bielecki had told her boyfriend, Daniel Peterson, that when she was a child, she would lay under the family Christmas tree, looking up at the lights. At times, she would even fall asleep under the tree. One beautiful winter night, as the tree glowed, the couple was admiring the tree that they and their children had decorated just a few days before. Out of the blue, Daniel asked Tracy if she wanted to lay under the tree, just like she used to do as a child. Surprised and full of excitement, she agreed. “Like two silly kids, they climbed under the tree staring up at the lights. She started reminiscing about her amazing childhood memories with Daniel as he held the ring in front of her and proposed, asking if she would make new,

Dancing with Dad

Not every bride has a dance with her father, but we think it’s a tradition that’s worth bringing back for 2014! Show your dad just how much he means to you (and that he’s still the number one man in your life) with a dance at the reception. The songs below all have a great sentiment behind them but “Father and Daughter” by Paul Simon is among our favorites. Here are among the top picks:

I Loved Her First — Heartland Father And Daughter — Paul Simon Isn’t She Lovely — Stevie Wonder When Y ou Need Me — Bruce Springsteen Ain’t That Love — Ray Charles

Daughters — John Mayer I’ll Stand By You — The Pretenders Brown-Eyed Girl — Van Morrison I Turn to You — Christina Aguilera Danci ng on Daddy’s Shoes — Leon Redbone

And, in case you’re having trouble with first dance song picks, here are a few suggestions for those, too:

You Are My First, My Last, My Everything — Barry White Take My Breath Away —Berlin The Rose — Bette Midler Our Lov e Is Here To Stay — Billie Holiday Just The Way You Are — Billy Joel

Fun. Unique.

We’ve Got Tonight — Bob Seger You Are My Special Angel — Bobby Helms If — Bread Everything I Own — Bread Heaven — Bryan Adams True Love Ways — Buddy Holly

Lost: Dog. Found: Engagement ring Deb Nicklay

Of The Press-News‌

Scott Welter relied on his girlfriend’s concern for a family dog to make his proposal scenario unique. Picture this: Scott and his girlfriend, Megan Neuwohner, had just enjoyed a nice meal at Bourbon Street in Cedar Falls. The date night was leisurely until Scott’s sister, Melanie, and brotherin-law called in a panic to say that their dog had slipped from the leash while they were walking him by the river, just a block or so away from the restaurant. “I was quite nervous and had all the worst possible ideas going through my head about where the dog could be,” Megan recalled. As they approached the river, Melanie took Megan in one direction on “the search,” while Scott and his brotherin-law headed in the other direction. After a couple of minutes of looking,

“I was quite nervous and had all the worst possible ideas going through my head about where the dog could be,” Megan recalled. Melanie brought Megan back toward the stairs that vault from the river’s edge to Cedar Fall’s Main Street. “Little did I know that they (the stairs) were all lit up with candles and there stood Scott with a redpainted sign saying, ‘Will You Marry Me?’ ” Megan said. “I was beyond surprised and didn’t know what to say. He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!” The “ruse” worked: The couple will marry on April 2, 2014, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mason City, with a reception at the Best Western in Clear Lake. Megan is the daughter of Jeff and Sue Neuwohner and is a 2008

graduate of Lake Mills High School. She earned a two-year degree at North Iowa Area Community College and her four-year teaching degree at the University of Northern Iowa. She is employed at the Gladbrook-Reinbeck Community Schools where she teaches fifth and sixth grade math and is also a fifth grade science teacher. Scott is a 2008 graduate of Cedar Falls High School, NIACC, and earned his degree in criminology from UNI. He works in Waterloo as a residential officer, at a residential facility. They plan to continue their careers in the Cedar Falls-Waterloo area.

Was he serious? Absolutely! Deb Nicklay

Of The Press-News‌

Hilary Altick and Jordon Mitchell met in 4-H at Osage High School “and we were friends ever since,” said Hilary. They came to be more than that – but when Jordon decided to pop the question, Hilary needed a bit of convincing to believe that Jordon was serious. They were in Meroa – the small, scenic community west of Osage – for Thanksgiving, in 2012. “Jordon asked me if I wanted to go see this cabin that was built with the lumber from trees (his family) had cut in the woods. “We were on the front porch and he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. But he had asked me this before and was just joking, so I didn’t know he was serious. “I answered him with: ‘Shut up!’ “(Then) he pulled a ring box out of his coat

“We were on the front porch and he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. But he had asked me this before and was just joking, so I didn’t know he was serious.” pocket and I again said, ‘Shut up!’ “And he opened it and there was a ring in it! I once again yelled, ‘Shut up!’ “I was very surprised and said ‘Yes!’ ” To clinch the deal, Jordon asked Hilary’s son, Brayden, playing nearby, if it would be OK to marry his mom. He said, “Yea.” And so it was. Hilary, the daughter of David Altick and Denette Renner, is a 2006 Osage High School graduate and graduated from Ellsworth Community College with a degree in equine science in 2007. She works fulltime at the 218 Fuel

Express in Floyd as a cashier, cook and waitress and also works as a parttime jailer for Mitchell County. She also does equine training, boarding and riding lessons at the family farm. Jordon is the son of Karla and Dwight Mitchell. He is a 2008 graduate of Osage High School and attended Kirkwood Community College for equine science and residential construction. He works fulltime for Popp Excavating in Osage. They plan to tie the knot on Sept. 27, 2014, in Meroa, with a reception to follow in Carpenter.

Some good friends provided the spark Deb Nicklay

Of The Press-News‌

It is fair to say in the case of Kati Nicklay and Bryce Henry that good friends help make good marriages. It was Kati’s longtime friend, Danny Beyer and his wife, Katie, who set up a blind date for Kati and Katie’s co-worker and friend, Bryce Henry. “The four of us went on a double-date and Bryce and I have been together since then,” Kati recalls. A year later, Bryce took Kati shopping in Mason City and said he had made reservations at the same restaurant where the couple

had their first “official” date. “After we ordered dinner and drinks, he told me to close my eyes … and when I opened them, he had a ring out and he asked me to marry him,” she said. Kati said: “Yes!’ ” What she did not know at the time was that Bryce had already alerted Kati’s parents to his intentions when he called his future father-in-law and asked him for permission to marry Kati. Kati, a 2005 Osage High School graduate, is the daughter of Cal and Deb Nicklay. She attended Hawkeye Community College and

is the sales manager at Clarion Inn of Mason City. Bryce, who graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 2002, is the son of Jack Henry and Erin TeglandHenry. He is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa and is the packaging manager at A to Z Drying in Osage. They plan to work in the area to be near family and eventually start a family of their own. The couple will marry on Sept. 20, 2014, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Belmond, with a reception to follow at the Clarion Inn in Mason City.
