Everything is getting more and more expensive and we — the students — are running out of money all the time. So if you’re looking for a nice evening or afternoon activity for you and your friends, this article will help you get some inspiration.

AMSTERDAM

Our journey starts in the capital city, in Amsterdam. If you are new in town and you have no clue where to go and what to do (besides eating waffles and fries all the time) we would like to suggest A CLUB CALLED ‘ESCAPE’. Amsterdam is one of the most beautiful cities where you can find good food for affordable prices and clubs where you can party all night long. The club Escape is one of the most popular clubs in town and has been entertaining people with good music, drinks and food since 1986. In the truest sense of the word, you can call this club a primary rock. During the day the club turns into a café and lounge, where they serve delicious food and drinks. When you sit there, watching people going by, you kind of get the feeling some-

8

thing special is going on. The fancy lights cover the vintage furniture in a warm and friendly atmosphere, famous people are smiling from the walls and you feel like you are going to have the best night of your life. But as we all know alcohol on an empty stomach is never a good idea, so better prepare yourself with some tasty finger food before the party can get started. But as you may think, this club is not only a club. It’s a multispaced venue - this includes the Escape club, the main hall, an intimate club-in-a-club and many more.

UTRECHT

The second stop on our journey takes us to the wonderful city that is Utrecht. It is right in the centre of The Netherlands and filled with students like you and me. This makes it

easy to travel to by train. From The Hague it will only take you about 45 minutes. And because of the great amount of students, there is a lot to do for affordable, student prices! One of the best places to go to is called STATHE. It is the place for a relaxed borrel, a nice place to meet and eat with your friends while listening to diverse music. They have an exciting amount of finger food, ready for you and your friends to share and enjoy. Every Friday and Saturday they have a live band or singer/ songwriter standing on stage. After the performance of this artist is finished, they get the DJ out, who will make you show your awesome, groovy dance moves on the dancefloor. If all this music and food just isn’t enough for you, they

you need music as an essential to live, you are in the right place to be.

also have events on Sunday (every second Sunday of the month) called Singer Songwriter Sunday – how amazingly catchy! Because like they say: Everyone needs an excuse to get that lazy ass off of the couch and their freshly brewed coffee, candles and dreamy music are more than enough reason to do so! They also organise a quiz every third Tuesday of the month. So even if you don’t feel like dancing, but are looking for a fun night out with your friends, you should definitely give their quiz a try!

ROTTERDAM

Our last stop for a fun night out will be in Rotterdam. The third biggest city of the Netherlands has a dynamic and exciting nightlife. There are a lot of different clubs, appealing night entertainment and amazing concerts. One of the most well-known nightclubs, located in a former grain silo, is ‘THE MAASSILO’. If you already think that the club looks quite impressive from the outside you really have to take a look inside — you won’t regret it! They are always organising different events, with different kind of music, but the focus is on electronic music. So if your heart beats for hardstyle and

If you want to prepare yourself with some good food before the night can begin, they offer a large variety of different dishes in their stylish and old fashioned lunchroom. You can choose between different sandwiches, toasts, smoothies, soups and snacks. The main attraction are the affordable prices for students — so you don’t have to spend all your money on preparing yourself, you can still invest it in good drinks. Unique is the perfect word to describe a place like this. It’s historical, trashy and you meet a lot of crazy people to have a good time with. This club is definitely worth a visit because it’s not only a quite impressive location - the club has history. So take a look inside, feel the beat, have some drinks, enjoy your life and forget about everything that is bringing you down. So there you go! These are our top three places outside of The Hague you should really try! There is something to do for everyone, whether you like to dance all night, just have a relaxing night out, or even have a chilled Sunday. All three places are really affordable for students and easy to get to through public transport. Go out, make new friends, enjoy a diverse range of music, eat tasty, delicious food and, of course, have fun. You won’t regret it!

Where to next? Paris, Madrid and Lisbon - Say bonjour, holla or olá to three equally stunning must see places. We’ve done our best to compile a comprehensive list of the places that have touched or impressed us in Paris or Madrid and Lisbon. We definitely suffered while eating and visiting our way through these two world renowned cities, but for you dear reader, we would do it all over again.

‘Quem nunca viu Lisboa, não viu coisa boa.’ ‘Who never saw Lisbon, never saw something good.’ This sentiment is something very likely shared amongst anyone who has ever had the joy of gracing this beautiful city. Built on hills, split by the Tagus River and the outstretching fastness of the great azure Atlantic Ocean on the horizon, the city’s geographical aspects are enough to marvel at alone, but there is so much more to explore when one dives in the warm bath that is Lisboa.

Places to visit Eateries Museu Coleção Berardo

This outstanding museum boasting work from Francis Bacon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Salvador Dalí, Ian Davenport, Jeff Koons, René Magritte and Andy Warhol amongst many others is a complete collection of art collected by Joe Berardo. A lot can be said about the collection, but one thing is clear; mister Berardo definitely knows something good when he sees it. A combination of contemporary and modern art, the massive permanent collection makes this the most renowned museum in Lisbon.

Mosteiro dos Jerónimos

A sublime example of the characteristic Manueline style of architecture, Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is a catholic monastery and church built in 1495. Inspired by maritime and naval expeditions, the structure features complex structures and limestone carvings, as well as spectacular stained glass windows. The choir on Sunday mornings is a truly special experience.

Pastéis do Belém

One of the icons of Portuguese cuisine, the pastel de nata is a small egg tart known throughout the globe. Its home is in the Lisbon neighbourhood of Belém, where Pastéis do Belém safeguards the original recipe and makes them according to this recipe. Sprinkled with powdered sugar and cinnamon, enjoy one in the shadow of Mosteiro dos Jerónimos.

Augusto Lisboa

Paris and Lisbon combined with fascinating pieces of contemporary art; Augusto Lisboa is the place to be upon awakening from slumber. Traditional French petit déjeuner mixed with Portuguese specialties is definitely a must try, but the real star of the show is the homemade ice cream.

What is this weird, magical, magnetic pull that Paris exercises over every tourist? It’s not just good marketing that makes Paris so special, it is Paris itself. Everyone has different memories in Paris, certain smells, pieces of artwork, fashion, or monuments that evoke their Paris. The only true sentiment we all share of Paris is that feeling of awe when we take our first deep breath of Parisian air.

PLACE DES VOSGES

Looking for the cool, sophisticated place where hip young people are smoking, sitting in the grass, and wearing stripes? Well, look no further. Place des Vosges is the perfect Parisian microcosm; art, music, beautiful architecture, and beautiful people. Is it full and maybe sometimes overcrowded? Yes. But, still worth it to take the time and take in such a quintessentially Parisian place. It really is fantastic for people watching.

Picasso Museum

Museums can be seriously overwhelming when you are already tired from a long day of sightseeing, but there are a couple of places where it’s worth fighting through the culture fatigue. The Picasso Museum happens to be one of them. It is small enough to do in an efficient manner, and still have time for dessert afterwards. A hugely impressive museum that’s very well curated and you walk out feeling like you have a good overview of the works of Picasso. After five years of renovations the museum reopened in 2014. The expansion project cost almost $70 million, so even if art isn’t your thing it will still be interesting to see if you can find where the $70 million went.

Harry's

Harry’s is the kind of place to you take your dad to reassure him that you’ve got your life completely together. Rich, dark wood, with cozy seating with a live piano player in the basement, and of course delicious cocktails. Don’t forget to pay your respects when walking into this place, as you are walking into history. Created in 1911 in New York, the bars founder, Tod Sloan decided to pack up his bar, wood plank by wood plank, following the prohibition and move it to Paris. It’s the place where the Bloody Mary (1921) and the Side Car (1924) were created. If that wasn’t enough incentive to go, it was also regularly visited by the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Rita Hayworth, and Coco Chanel. Dad will be impressed, promise.

THE LOCKWOOD

A long list of delicious cocktails that go down much easier than they should. Go down to the basement and enjoy the cave like atmosphere while having the bartenders decide what cocktail you should be drinking. The bartenders have a way with faces so if you go back often enough they’ll recognize you and make you feel extra special. Added bonus, they do a super yummy brunch so after a night of heavy drinking at the Lockwood, go back the next morning for brunch (disclaimer- only on weekends).

COCKTAILS!

Madrid

Spain’s capital is full of life, no matter the time of day or night. Doesn’t matter what you like to do, you will find the right place to do it in Madrid. Where architecture meets some of the most wonderful paintings, eating lunch at 3pm on a terrace is a must-do, as well as walking through the streets which will take you to the most random and great stores.

20

Platea

Cereal Hunters cafe

An old theatre has become one of the nicest spots to get some dinner. Tons of different small restaurants sell their food to take-away so you can sit at a table by the theatre to enjoy your food. Cheese, sushi, croquetas, burgers, spanish ham... and wonderful gin tonics surrounded by great people.

Fan of cereals? This place is for you. A cereal breakfast bar in one of the coolest spots in town (Fuencarral and Malasaña). Start the day with a bowl of cereals from all over the world, different type

of milks and great cakes. Afterwards, go for a walk to settle that cereal induced food baby you’re now carrying and see some some of the cool surrounding stores.

Museo del Prado If you like art, this is one of the best museums in Europe. It hosts different collections, from art all over the world and full of important paintings: Goya, Tintoretto, Velazquez, Veronese, Van Dyck, Bosco‌ And the building itself is just stunning.

TIP All museums in Madrid are free at least one day of the week

Places to Visit

Museo del traje If you like fashion, this place is for you. It hosts a wonderful collection of clothes through the ages. From the first piece of clothing, not literally, but pretty close, up to the latest fashion collection. Learn history through fashion. Like Lagerfeld says, trendy is the last stop on the train to trashy, until it ends up in a museum, then all is forgiven.

CULAR MOVIES

(PROBABLY) HAVEN’T SEEN “The world today doesn’t make sense, so why should I paint pictures that do?” –Pablo Picasso What’s your definition of a good film? Think about it for a minute. You might be tired of watching your same old movies that you have seen one too many times. That is why we dare you to watch our list of spectacular movies you (probably) haven’t seen. It will be an adventure unlike any other. We want to challenge your brain and we want your jaw to drop. While watching, question everything. Think behind the story, observe the feelings and most importantly, do not look for an obvious end with a meaning. Let your imagination flow and let the films move you.

25

W

ow. Just amazing. "The Man from Earth" is basically one deep conversation that will pin you down and have your brain working way overtime. No CGI, no flashy action, but simply mind blowing. DO NOT watch this film if you DO NOT DARE have your beliefs and opinions questioned. For anyone who is open-minded and ready for an adventure of ideas and possibilities, make sure you do not miss this masterpiece.

THE MAN FROM EARTH (2007)

The Man from Earth is a story of a man who has lived on Earth for 14,000 years and now reveals this truth to his friends/colleagues during a good-bye evening. It is a film that, despite its simplicity, makes one reconsider everything they’ve known and believed in so far. We too were listening and thinking about every single sentence that was said with our jaws dropped. What if your friend told you he is, due to altered genes, 14000 years old? Would you believe him? Would it make you happy, angry? Would you really have any way of knowing the truth? What is particularly interesting to observe is how differently people treated the protagonist at the beginning, during and after the debate. It is a great example of how the others treat you when you fit in their norms, their beliefs (no matter what they are) and opinions. This film will surely lead to a fruitful debate between you and a friend with whom you will surely watch this film after reading this article. When you watch it, think of the endless possibilities, let your mind overheat. Now GO and watch it. We know you want to.

26

The Cube (1997) They all went to make a dinner, to sleep and…Six complete strangers trapped in a labyrinth of cubes (most of which are deadly) are forced to combine their skills to escape. But there are thousands of cubes. Can they make it? Will they survive? What would you do in their place? Survival is the essence of The Cube, but there is much more to it. You will see personalities evolve, you will witness desperation, denial and surrender.

Is there an exit? Will it ever end? Or more importantly, is it supposed to end? The ending is phenomenal, but you might not like it. Why? Perhaps you subconsciously wanted it to end it in a very specific way? Think about what YOU would do if you were trapped in The Cube. There are thousands of cubes, one wrong, thoughtless move and you’re dead. Your mind is the (Rubik’s) The Cube, solve it.

27

Synecdoche, New York (2008) This is not a film; it is a piece of art. And it must be is one of the strangest, saddest, most perplexing and delusional ones you will ever see. Its point is not to confuse you, but to move you, to make you feel. The story illustrates the complexity and emotionality of life, love and death. It gives you the feeling of a complete surrealism happening in front of your eyes complemented by epic scenes that reflex the infinite possibilities of human’s imagination. Synecdoche, New York is a life story of Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who is struggling with his life, dealing with his extremely unusual relationships with women and overcoming the helplessness over separation from his daughter. At the same time, he is creating a replica of New York in a warehouse to be the backdrop of his new play. This will not be easy to watch for a person who likes linear stories. That is why Synecdoche, New York left me amazed and slightly frustrated at the same time. There were moments where I smiled, where I felt sad and where I felt a huge question mark in my head. When it all finished (od did it?) I was just staring nowhere trying to figure something out – I mean anything. Because that is how unpredictable this movie was despite looking very calm and organised. But the mess was so beautiful, strong, just like our lives. That is why I liked it eventually. I just needed some time.

28

BONUS - Superjail! (animated series) You either love it or you hate it. You just have to admire the mess that is Superjail! Super colourful, super wild and super unpredictable, that is Superjail!. Forget about what makes sense and most importantly, forget about the plot. Your brain will try to look for a linear explanation of the story, but it will not succeed. That is because the story should not make sense, the plot is completely irrelevant. Instead, the series is full of ideas, action, weird characters, colours, and gore. It is amazing to see how the creators of the show let their imagination go in all directions. This is a masterpiece of its own kind, redefining the word “extreme”. Yet, the episodes are fascinating and entrancing, and despite the chaos, funny. The series will have your head spinning with its fast-moving action, resulting in epic conclusions. Each episode is about 11 minutes long, packed with visual extravagances. Give it a try! Turn your brain off, stop thinking and just watch. Observe the colours, observe the action, and think about what the creators must think when designing the show. We recommend watching S01E06 Terrorarium first. There is a superjail inside of us all… Or perhaps above us all? Or is it just our dreams? You’re the one to decide.

well-known movie quote from a ‘golden oldy’ is form the movie Casablanca. The movie is about the city Casablanca where Rick Blaine, a man with a shady history has a gambling place. One certain day a lady walks in - it is Ilsa Lund, the former lover of Rick. The two had a loving relationship but were parted because of circumstances. And then after all these years in another place and time they meet again. Then the scene follows wherein Rick Blaine says: ‘Of all the gin joints in all the towns she happens to walk into mine.’ With this quote he means, of all the places in the world she could go to she is in the same place as I am. Dutch - Newbies Awkward moments when meeting people By Victoria Posch, Alina Vinț, Bo Weterings Setting foot in a new country is always something exciting. You experience a different culture, taste different food and are confronted with another language. Meeting new people and making friends abroad is essential and can be quite enriching. However, it might not always be that easy or comfortable, especially when you are in the Netherlands. Let’s take a look at three of situations, no one wants to experience. ©Bo Weterings

3

Checking in and out in public transportation

Imagine yourself in a new country, where you don’t know the language, where you don’t know how things work and you don’t know anyone. That is probably something very common. But now, imagine yourself in the Netherlands, where you don’t speak or understand Dutch, you don’t know how to ride a bike and you don’t know anyone to give you a lift. The only option in this case is: public transportation!

34

Public transportation in the Netherlands, which includes trams and busses, is quite easy, but it doesn’t seem like that at first. An option for international students is

to get an OV-chipcard, where you put some money on and every single time, you have to check IN and OUT. However, it can easily lead to confusion and uncomfortable situations anyways. In some countries in the south of Europe, you only have to check in with your card so why, would one ask, do you have to check out too in the Netherlands? Apparently it is a question of security, according to a security guard. Imagine yourself, once again, in this country, where you don’t speak Dutch and you just bought an OV-chipcard from the machine. You are very proud of yourself because you read everything in Dutch. Suddenly, you want to check in and it doesn’t work and for the person next to you either. The good thing about this awkward moment is that you’ll meet new people that are just as lost and confused as you. Hopefully, you will talk and together realize how it works. So, welcome in the Netherlands, never forget to check IN and check OUT!

2

The awkward elevator situation

Have you already experienced that situation when you are in an elevator and someone else comes in? All of a sudden there is this awkward silence and you don’t know how to break it. Well, this is what can easily happen in one of the many student residences in the Netherlands. The country in the north of Europe is a very popular destination for young people from all over the world wanting to study in a multicultural and international environment. Take for instance DUWO-Housing in The Hague: A giant tower located in Waldorpstraat 47 has 23 floors. Can you imagine now, how it becomes quite awkward if you want to go down in the elevator and suddenly you find yourself trapped with a stranger on the 15th floor? You know that you have 14 more floors to go and absolutely no idea what to say. What now? Stare? Take out your phone and pretend you’re busy texting someone? Or just make the first move and start a conversation? The latter is probably a good idea if you are new in the Netherlands and want to meet people.

35

©Bo Weterings But once you have said something the next uncomfortable moment might await: Do you handshake or kiss? That’s a tricky matter indeed. Greeting customs around the world vary greatly, even within Europe. Whereas the Spanish kiss twice, the Germans usually just shake hands. In the Netherlands, however, it is common to kiss three times. Yes, elevators may in fact be a convenient place to meet people but for some that’s just not it. Nonetheless you’ll get used to it. You can always just smile, wave and play it cool. Remember, the other person probably feels just as awkward as you, and who knows, sometimes you might actually make a friend in an elevator. Confidence and an open mind are the key.

1

Crashing into someone with your bike

36

As you make your way through a Dutch city for the first time, presumably you'd wonder at some point where the enormous flow of bikes comes from and if it will ever end. As many probably know, there are more bikes than residents in the big cities. The situation gets more complicated when you make the daring step of buying a

bike for yourself. In any case, be prepared to share the bike trail with many other enthusiastic bikers. Can you imagine that your own bike could lead you to lots of new adventures? Let's say that a normal morning turned out to be a chaos and you are late for school. You’re speeding to the university. Apparently, there is nobody on the street so you decide to speed up and take a tight curve, when out of nowhere another bike appears and before you know it you fly gracefully over your handlebar and find yourself on the pavement. What a great way to start your day! Yet, during the time that you remove the dust from your pants and the other person mumbles some excuses in your direction, you decide that this should eventually be a good day. So you listen to the excuses and the explanations of the other, you realize that you've just met a colleague of yours that was being late for the same class as you were! What a coincidence and what a curious way to meet someone. Even though it doesn't happen on a daily basis, smaller bike crashes may occur and, maybe next time you bump into someone, you’ll encounter a colleague, a neighbour or perhaps a nice stranger.

M&M’s giant cookie Ingredients - 170 gr unsalted butter (room temperature) - 100 gr brown sugar - 100 gr flour - 1 medium egg - M&Ms (to taste) - 1 teaspoon baking powder

Cookies lovers, this recipe is for you. Either to share or to it all by yourself with vanilla ice cream. Super easy and quick to make, perfect as a different birthday cake or to take as a gift to a party.

Instructions On a bowl, mix together with a paddle attachment or a hand mixer the butter and the sugar until creamy. Add egg and mix just until combined. Sift flour and baking powder and add it to the mixture. Once the cookie dough is ready, add the M&Ms and mix with a spatula by hand. Spray with butter a rounded pan or skillet and press in the mixture. At this point you can add M&Ms on top to decorate. Chill the dough in the fridge for about 1 hour. Preheat oven to 180ºC and bake for 20-30 mins. The edges should be a bit brown and the centre still soft. Do not overbake as the cookie will keep baking until it’s completely cool.

Once it’s baked, take the cookie out of the oven and let it sit for an hour. Add ice cream and enjoy!!

cupcakes Preheat oven to 180ºF

1

Mix butter (previously melted) with sugar.

- 300 gr powdered sugar - 250 gr unsalted butter - 2 tbs vanilla sugar (or vanilla paste) - 1 tbs milk

Frosting

2

On a mixer with a paddle attachment add the softened butter and start mixing.

Add eggs one at a time, mixing well.

Add gradually the powdered sugar to make sure your kitchen doesn’t look like a winter wonderland!

Stir in flour, cocoa and baking podwer. When well mixed, add milk.

Once the frosting has been mixed, add the vanilla sugar or paste and 1 tbs of milk and mix again.

Line a muffin pan with 12 cupcake liners. Don’t fill the liners more than 1/2 way! I use an ice cream scoop to make sure the batter is equally divided.

If the frosting is still too thick, add a bit more of milk, but make sure you do this gradually and very slowly since the frosting can easily be ruined.

Bake for approx. 20 mix or until a toothpick is inserted and comes out clean.

Add the frosting into a piping bag and decorate the cupcakes! (Make sure they are completely cool)

Let the cupcakes cool while making the frosting.

Eat!!!

With Halloween coming up later this month, this edition of the Globetrotter would simply not be complete without a Halloween-related topic. Hence, this article is on a scary theme. All around the world, there are places that are considered to be haunted for various reasons. Some places have a sinister past, while other places play a significant role in mythology, or simply folk tales. Of course, it has never been scientifically proven that these places are haunted, but some witness reports and other stories make up interesting stories about these places, each with its own unique, goose bumps-providing story. Here is our top three of haunted places in the world!

The Screaming Tunnel, Canada

There are many shocking stories as to the terrible tragedy which occurred at the Screaming Tunnel in Canada, where it is told that you can hear a woman's voice screaming in the damp blackness. Some stories tell that if you are brave enough to stand in the middle of the tunnel in the darkness of the night and strike a match, the woman's unresting spirit will give a blood-curdling scream and blow out the flame. Legend says that a young girl burnt to death in the tunnel after running to escape a nearby fire, perishing in anguish and flames. Another story recounts the

tale of a violent father who viciously

murdered his own daughter in the tunnel, burning her young body to cinders. Yet some say the girl was attacked by a disturbed alcoholic, who molested and killed her, destroying the evidence by burning the corpse.

This frightening tale of a girl screaming across the void between the world beyond and the living draws international attention from thrill-seekers and artists alike. Interestingly, the Screaming Tunnel featured in movies such as "The Dead Zone" and "Limestone Burning".

2

Castle of Good Hope, South Africa For over a hundred and fifty years, the Castle of Good Hope was the centre of early colonial activity in South Africa. The formidable stone building still stands today open to the public as an ominous reminder of the country's cruel and complicated past. An eerie silence prevails as the last remnants of a day fade away across the vast stone courtyard where night watchmen uneasily keep guard over the grounds where the strict Dutch regime punished dissidents and enemies with brutal torture and merciless executions.

48

The official tour guide makes sure to leave a moment of silence in respect for the dead while showing frightened visitors around the punishment quarters, perhaps in fear of restless spirits lingering around after meeting their painful ends. Guests are quickly shown past the silent, windowless cells with heavily bolted doors where often

innocent men, women and even children were held captive, starved, beaten and left to suffer. Desperate messages carved in by finger-nails and scattered blood stains decorate the walls. Stories tell that strange

voices, fearsome screams and footsteps paint a disturbing picture of the awful reality of life during that period. Employees of the Castle recount uncomfortable experiences working late at the Castle. These include the uneasy sensation of constantly being watched or even the feeling of invisible hands pinning them down. The so-called "Dark Hole" is the scariest and darkest part of the Castle, where detainees were once left to die in the dungeon. Even today, there is said to be a strange force luring unsuspecting victims into the darkness for a fright.

1

Aokigahara forest, Japan

Finally, the most haunted place on this list is the only place on the list that is not a man-made building. It is Japan’s Akogihara forest. This forest is situated in Japan, at the foot of its highest mountain, mount Fuji, at about 160 kilometres from Tokyo. This unique forest is known for its lack of wildlife, making it a very quiet spot. This quietness has a very macabre side

however. Aokigahara is nicknamed “the suicide forest” and derived this nickname from the fact that it is Japan’s most “popular” spot for committing suicide. Since the 1950’s, many men, mostly Japanese businessmen, have set foot into the forest and about 500 have never come out. It is not uncommon for its visitors to stumble upon clothing or human remains. On the entrances of the forest, several signs can be found. These signs aim to prevent people from taking their own life, and display messages such as

“Your life is a precious gift”.

These events at Aokigahara play a significant role in Japanese mythology. So-called Yūrei - ghosts who suffered a violent death - are said to roam the forest. Many forest visitors claim to have seen real apparitions of the Yūrei, which appeared as white figures drifting between the trees. There has been a case of a visitor hearing a loud scream. When this visitor followed the screams, to find the sources, he found a body of a person who died long ago, and thus, could not have been the person who screamed. It also claimed that the spirits who roam the forest deliberately call people to the forest to take their own life. Scary!

TOP WTF MOMENTS you may have experienced while living in the Netherlands

By Eleonora Dimitrova & Isabeau Morin At some point of our lives, all of us want to experience something new, for instance visiting a country from another part of the world. Visiting a country for a short period of time gives us the opportunity to learn plenty of new things really quickly. However, while living abroad, it is normal for exchange students to experience culture shock - or what we like to call “WTF moments.” The Netherlands is definitely an amazing country on many levels, but we’ve noticed that there seem to be some common aspects about Dutch culture and society that leave exchange students baffled. Keep reading to see if you’ve experienced these WTF moments while you’ve been here!

1

Beware of Bikes!

50

The most obvious culture shock for exchange students arriving in the Netherlands is the amount of bikes - they are everywhere, and they definitely have a monopoly on the road. As an outsider looking in, Dutch roads look chaotic trams, cars, mopeds, busses, trains… and then bikes just zipping in and out of traffic! Upon arrival, many students are preoccupied with looking out for the cars, mopeds and trams, but they soon find out that the real danger is cyclists they stop for no one! You know what they say: “If you can’t beat them, join them!” Even for students who don’t usually ride their bikes everywhere, in Den Haag, you will quickly realize

(if you haven’t already) that biking is the only way to travel in this city.

2

Fatty foods

Upon arrival, exchange students were warned about Dutch food - by other Dutch people. WTF?? For many students, a diet based largely on bread and potatoes takes some getting used to. However, many students, like Mico from China, appreciate the fact that the diversity of the city ensures that there is a wide variety of restaurants available for students beginning to tire of the heavy Dutch diet. And for those of you looking to truly embrace Dutch culinary traditions… raw herring, anyone?

3

Slow Service/ No Service

It is expected that customer service will vary from country to country. However, the service - or lack thereof - can come as a bit of a shock to certain students, especially those of you from North America, where the customer is king. In Den Haag, it is not unusual to wait at least 5 minutes before the waiter comes and sees you or before

the sales associate comes and checks on you. As difficult as the slow service can be to deal with, it is nothing compared to no service. They warned us at our arrival in the Netherlands that shops close early, but it’s hard to understand the actual implications of this fact until you actually experience it. It’s best to do your shopping in the morning or during midday, especially if you’re in need of the essentials (i.e. toilet paper, alcohol, etc.). Otherwise, there is a very good chance the stores will be closed by the end of your day and you’ll have to wait till tomorrow. These are just some of the top WTF moments many exchange students experience during their stay in the Netherlands, but rest assured, there are certainly many more. Culture shock

is a completely normal part of the living abroad experience - it can be overwhelming sometimes, but the best way to deal with some of the frustrating situations you will encounter is to simply laugh them off. Remember, the WTF moments you experience in the Netherlands will make for great stories to share with friends and family back home!

Religious Transitions in the Netherlands By Katie Thurson, DanaĂŠ Itzel RamĂrez Arjona & Jet van der Kolk

Religion in the Netherlands presents an interesting combination of cultural and social aspects as it influences how certain groups interact with politics, business and education. In recent decades there has been a progression of secularization in Dutch society, which was previously inclined towards the Christian religion and worship of Islam. In fact, 900 Protestant and Catholic churches have closed leading to become restaurants, residential buildings, hairdressers and even sex shops.

Christianity in the Netherlands The Protestant Church in the Netherlands is the largest Protestant denomination in the Netherlands, being both Reformed and Lutheran. In May 2004, after nearly 20 years of negotiations, the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands, the Netherlands Reformed Church, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Kingdom of the Netherlands merged to form the Protestant Church in the Netherlands. This church claimed about 2.5 million members in 2008. From the onset of the Protestant Reformation, the Dutch population became divided into about two-thirds Protestant and one-third Roman Catholic believers. This began to change gradually in the 20th century, as there has been a steep decline in religious adherence. In fact, new figures show that over time

54

many attendees have left the churches. In 1960, seventy percent of Dutch Catholics attended the Sunday service, now only seven percent are regular visitors. Three hundred of the 900 churches have been demolished, another 300 occupied by new forms of faith. The remaining were converted into apartments, bars, restaurants, offices, nightclubs, diving and mountaineering schools. A great example of such a church is ‘De Grote Kerk’ in The Hague. The location can be rented by companies or other organizations and is the ideal place to host a diner, exhibition or even a concert! The church is open every day, so feel free to take a look!

Islam in the Netherlands In the Netherlands, adherents of Islam currently make up five 5% of the population according to a study completed in 2015 by Radboud University and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. This group comprises mostly members belonging to the Moroccan communities, Iranians, Iraqis, Afghans and Somalis.

Islam, and in some part Hinduism, are the religions associated with the Hindustani; immigrants from the Hindustan region (India, Pakistan). Islam has been in the Netherlands since the eighteenth century, courtesy of Ottoman traders living in port cities. Top 3 on the be By Maeve Dunigan & Ester van der Plas

Most people picture beaches as warm expanses of sand and sun, fit for swimming, tanning and probably sweating. But what do you do at the beach when it’s cold? Or even raining. Our own Scheveningen beach here in The Hague doesn’t experience warm temperatures for most of the year, but that certainly doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go. With that in mind, here are the top three activities you can do at the beach when it’s not necessarily bathing-suit weather.

Surfing Having a day off? Take your friends to the beach and go surfing! Surfing is a nice way to spend your day and meet new people. It gives you an adrenaline boast, once you get the feeling of it. Scheveningen has the perfect surfing spot, many are convinced it has the best waves of The Netherlands. Surfing in the winter is great, because the waves are higher and as long as you don’t forget your wetsuit, the cold is not a problem. If you haven’t tried surfing yet, Scheveningen has three surf schools; Hart Beach, Surfles.nl and Aloha Surf.

Flying a Kite

56

Flying a kite is a great way to go outside and take advantage of the wind on a cold day. There’s nothing like watching the colourful little aircraft sail higher and higher into the sky. Take multiple kites to the beach with friends and watch your little fleet float high above in the air. Make sure to keep a tight hold on the handle so that your kite isn’t stolen by the wind. There’s lots to do on the beach, even when it’s cold. You can get dinner, go surfing, or even fly a kite. It’s almost impossible to get bored this autumn break.

each

Dinner on the Beach Even when it’s chilly outside, you can always go grab dinner on the beach with friends. The sand and waves give you a perfect backdrop for dinner, whether it be fancy or fast food. Going to get dinner on the beach makes you feel like you’re getting away to another world, even when you may have only travelled for twenty minutes. Many beach dinner spots on Scheveningen offer outdoor seating under heat lamps, allowing groups to enjoy the fresh air without the frigid winds that mother nature provides in the fall and winter months. Plus, the pier also offers a variety of indoor restaurants that still have a view of the sea, so you can experience the beach from the comfort of a table inside. Enjoy the salty breeze and the sound of the gulls, all while sharing a meal with friends. Don’t let the colder weather keep you from food, friends, sand and surf.
