The Captain’s Voyage Over the Five Oceans & Six Continents The Art of Yoo Choong Yeul Book II
Once in a while, there comes an artist extraordinaire. An artist who makes the viewer take notice. Of his work, his skill, his presence. Such an artist is Yoo Choong Yeul. If I had to give just one word to describe Yoo, that word would be FOCUS. Because Yoo is absolutely focused on his paintings, and his undying commitment to art. He leaves no stone unturned in his life long pursuit of perfecting his craft. Yoo’s dedication goes beyond passion. The man is totally centered on his incredible fine art. And it has always been proven that with focus comes success. Yoo was born in 1960 in South Korea; and entered the art world in 1981, vowing to be, in his own words: “a world class painter”. Recalling his earliest memory of his involvement with art, Yoo said: “When I was 20 years old, I attended night high school in Seongnam. Then, I liked to make drawings from comic books, and started illustrating cartoons with a 12-color ballpoint pen.” “One day, I was drawing Superman from the cover of a comic book, working late into the night. At around 2am, there was a sudden power failure. I waited for about 30 minutes but the electricity was not restored. I went to my friend Kang Seong- gu’s bedroom and opened a drawer of an old unused desk, looking to find a large candle, so I could continue to finish my artwork. As soon as my hand held the candle, I felt a shiver running through my body. And heard an inner voice saying: ‘You go the painter’s path.’ From that day hence, I was motivated to take ‘The Artist’s Path.’” Yoo is renowned for his creation of the Captain. When asked why he created this now famous character that has graced covers of books by international writers, Yoo shared: “I learnt how to draw a captain around 1983 from the Master Kang Won, who draws captains.”
“By 1985, I was married with a son but faced financial challenges. It was difficult to earn money for the household. So, I stayed at the Seongnam Painting Room, which by car, is about an hour and a half away from my house. There I painted inexpensive artworks. I did not make much money but always had this burning desire to paint portraits.” “I began drawing the captain that I had learned from my Master. And during this process of drawing the captain sailing the sea, was inspired to include the map and a compass, essential navigational aids for seafaring.” “I started transfering these ideas onto canvases. Since then, the Captain grew in popularity especially in the American art market, resulting in commision works and many orders.” Yoo has won many distinguished international art awards, yet remains grounded. He is an artist who’s very down to earth. A man of great humility with a penchant to help other artists achieve their goals. Yoo loves his country and goes that extra mile in promoting Korean artists and bringing Korean Art to the world. Like a true captain of his art-ship, Yoo is at the helm constantly facilitating projects that bring international artists to his homeland. I for one, applaud this unceasing dedication of his and appreciate his support of emerging artists. “Challenge yourself,” advised Yoo. “Dream that ‘grand dream’. Although this is difficult for many of us to achieve, this can still be done. Be patient and work hard. Then, the dream will come true.” Almost four decades ago, Yoo set off on a voyage into uncharted waters. He set sail with faith, hope and sheer determination. And what an amazing voyage it has been. A voyage of immense self discovery that’s proven rewarding for body, mind and spirit. 가끔 천재 아티스트가 등장합니다. 보는 이로 하여금 주목하게 만드는 아티스트. 그의 일, 그의 기술, 그의 존재. 그런 아티스트가 바로 유충열이다. 유를 딱 한 단어로 표현하자면 포커스이다. 유씨는 그림에 대해 절대적으로 집중하고 있고, 예술에 대한 불굴의 의지를 갖고 있기 때문입니다. 그는 자신의 기술을 완벽하게 만들기 위해 평생을 추구하는 동안 자신의 예술세계에 돌을 던지지 않았습니다. 유씨의 헌신은 열정을 넘어선다. 그 남자는 그의 놀라운 순수 예술에 완전히 집중되어 있습니다. 그리고 집중하면 성공이 온다는 것이 항상 증명되었습니다. 유씨는 1960년 대한민국에서 태어났습니다. 그리고 1981년 예술계에 입문하여 자신의 말로 "세계적인 화가"가 되겠다고 다짐했습니다. 유씨는 자신이 미술과 인연을 맺은 초기 기억을 회상하며 이렇게 말했다. “20살 때 성남에서 야간고등학교를 다녔습니다. 그러다 만화책을 보고 그림 그리는 걸 좋아해서 12색 볼펜으로 만화를 그리기 시작했어요.” “어느 날 만화책 표지에 있는 슈퍼맨을 그리며 밤늦게까지 그림을 그렸습니다. 새벽 2시경 갑자기 정전이 되었습니다. 30분 정도 기다렸지만 전기는 들어오지 않았다. 그당시 나는 친구 강성구의 자취방에 함께 있었는데 전기가 들어오지 않아 방에 들어가려고 할때 사용하지 않는 오래된 낡은 책상이 방문 왼쪽에 있는것이 눈에 들어왔습니다. 양초가 있으면 좋겠다는 마음으로 무심코 책상서랍을 열었는데 한번도 쓰지않은 큰 양초가 손에 잡혔습니다. 양초가 손끝에 닿자마자 온몸에 짜릿한 전율이 흘렀다. 그리고 '너는 화가의 길을 가라' 는 소리가 들렸습니다. 슈퍼맨 그림은 그날 완성하고 잤으며 그날 이후로 저는 '화가의 길'을 선택하게 되었습니다." 유는 캡틴을 만든 것으로 유명합니다. 국제 작가들의 책 표지를 장식한 이 유명한 캐릭터를 만든 이유를 묻자 유씨는 이렇게 말했습니다. “선장 그리는 법은 1983년경에 선장을 그리는 강원 사부님에게 배웠습니다.”
