For me, Gotland is an island of contrasts. Here I can stroll on a deserted beach one minute and feel the pulse of Visby the next. I can meet and socialise with people of different ages and backgrounds all over the island, which creates a wonderful continental atmosphere. The contrasts are also reflected in the unique landscape, with everything from barren limestone cliffs to sandy beaches and lush coastal meadows. With all the cosy pubs, cafés and craft shops that seem to pop up wherever I find myself, it also feels like Gotland is becoming increasingly vibrant, year round. We have tried to capture all this in the magazine you are holding in your hands. Read on and enjoy some of the feelings that we believe are so characteristic of our island.

AROUND THE WORLD

ON ONE ISLAND

From Crete’s dramatic rock formations to the turquoise seas of the West Indies. From the savannahs of Africa to the vibrant nightlife of the French Riviera. Add a medieval city whose city walls and church ruins evoke the essence of Rome, and you will realise there’s no need to leave Sweden to travel abroad.

Närsholmen is a peninsula in the south-east of Gotland. The wind and sea have left their mark on its natural landscape, which features small trees and junipers. In the summer, the fields are awash with viper’s bugloss – reason alone to visit the island. 4

Kenya?

No, a meandering coastal road in N채rsholmen.

5

Sardinia?

No, Bl책 Lagunen, in Fleringe.

6

LIMESTONE QUARRY Blå Lagunen is one of the most visited limestone quarries in Gotland, with its Mediterranean turquoise-tinged water luring even the most reluctant bathers to take a dip. Blå Lagunen is located in Fleringe, in the north-eastern part of the island.

RELAXING ON THE BEACH SUDERSAND, on FÅRÖ, was voted the second best beach in the world by Dagens Nyheter. This fine-grained sandy shoreline attracts families with children who want to stay close to the ice cream stall as well as couples looking to hide away in a sand dune. And if you’d rather leave your picnic hamper at home, there’s a restaurant on the beach – the perfect spot if you’re hungry after a swim or keen to savour the sunset over a drink. 7

In combination with weather and wind, Gotland’s limestone terrain creates a unique coastal landscape. The landscape varies across the island, although sandy beaches, dramatic rock cuts and windswept dwarf pine trees are recurring features.

800 Km OF COASTLINE When you’re on Gotland, you’re never far away from a smooth, sandy beach. However, the island’s 800 kilometres of coastline offers so much more, including mighty cliffs, beautiful shingle beaches and pleasant shore meadows. People on the island have lived in harmony with the sea for hundreds of years, something reflected by all its delightful small harbours and fishing villages. The coastline is best explored along its meandering lanes, and if you’re in luck, you’ll find the perfect spot.

Gotland is a unique Swedish surfing spot, offering ideal conditions for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. The peak surfing season is in the spring and autumn, when the winds are at their best.

9

A WORLD HERITAGE SITE Once capital of the Baltic Sea and main centre of the Hanseatic League, Visby is a city uniting the old and the new. Visby’s 13th century city walls are well persevered, and walking through town you’ll stumble upon several monastery ruins and beautiful old buildings. Today’s Visby is teeming with cafés, restaurants and shops. Spend the day shopping, sightseeing or sampling first-rate cuisine – in Visby, there’s never a dull moment.

10

11

Crete?

No, Södra Hällarna, south of Visby.

12

LAND OF LIGHT The Gotland light is a renowned feature of the island, beguiling many visitors with its magical qualities. The unique light has long been a source of inspiration for creativity, drawing artists and designers to the island. Fused with the barren natural landscape – most prominent on the northern part of the island – the light creates some dramatic scenery. This has captivated and inspired many filmmakers, including Ingmar Bergman, who shot several films on Fårö, in the north of Gotland.

Södra Hällarna is a nature reserve and lies on the southern outskirts of Visby. This popular walking route features steep cliffs, dwarf pines and orchids. 13

CONTRASTS A tiny fishing village. A face catches searing rays of sun as a soothing cup of coffee is poured from a coffee pot. Elsewhere, an artist prepares for the evening performance while someone slopes off for an ice-cold drink after a day on the beach. Gotland combines lazy days on the beach with bustling nightlife featuring bars, concerts and cuisine. The island unites people of all ages and cultures in a variety of settings and situations, to create a uniquely continental climate. As well as all the new venues in Visby, a range of delightful restaurants, cafĂŠs and pubs have sprouted up in the countryside over the last few years.

Arizona?

No, Furillen, in the north of Gotland.

14

Kyoto?

No, the Botanical gardens in Visby.

With its location within the city walls providing protection from wind and weather, Visby’s Botanical gardens enjoy a warm climate in which exotic plants such as mulberry, figs and tulip trees flourish freely. 15

pause & pulse Gotland is a paradise for children. With swathes of shallow shores and a host of adventures just a short trip away, the island offers a world of activities. We picked out a selection suitable for all the family.

Fun and games all day long KNEIPPBYN | Just three kilometres from Visby is the summer resort and aqua park you’ll never want to leave, featuring pools and water-slides for visitors old and young. And for fans of Pippi Longstocking, a trip to Villa Villekulla is a must – Kneippbyn is home to the actual house used in the iconic Pippi films. Nowadays, the venue is a toy museum.

Setting a medieval mood MEDIEVAL TOURNAMENT | As jesters entertain and flags ripple in the wind, horses can be heard neighing in the background. The air is thick with expectancy as the knights make their entrance, and the Tournament commences. Framed by Visby’s famous city walls, this exciting, entertaining event takes place in the most authentic of settings. Medieval tournaments are also held on other sites around the island.

Gotland on horseback RIDING | Sitting on horseback for the first time, you’ll experience a jolt of excitement and nervous energy – an unforgettable feeling which will stay with you forever. Gotland boasts a number of sites for those keen to try riding, whether on a Gotland Russ, a pony or an Icelandic Horse, and the island’s white roads and barren landscape enhance the experience.

Let your creativity loose POTTERY | Gotland is renowned for its many artistic craftsmen, and you’ll find ceramics throughout the island. But how does pottery actually work? At Etelhem’s Krukmakeri, children get the chance to try their hand at pottery, letting their creative instinct and imagination run wild. And of course, they get to keep their creations! 19

THE SEA AND SEAFARING ON GOTLAND

Join in the fun, children and adults together, at the museum’s new swashbuckling exhibition. Roll across the seas on ships from different eras, dress up as a Viking or a pirate, dig for hidden treasure, listen to dastardly tales and legends, take over the helm of the enormous cog ship and head for distant lands. Try your hand at stacking cargo on a ship, learn more about fish, fishing, ropes and knots. Welcome, me hearties!

Romateatern

Based in beguiling monastery ruins dating back to the 12th century, the theatre in Roma has been performing Shakespeare for 25 years in the summer. Comedy is on the menu during the summer months, and you won’t want to miss an evening of laughs and drama in this wonderful, enchanting setting. And the nearby Roma Kungsgård is a must-visit venue, offering exhibitions, arts and crafts, shops and a café.

Crimetime Gotland

2-9 AUGUST 2015

makes debut

13–16 August sees Visby play host to Crimetime Gotland, an international crime fiction festival. Featuring a series of authors with roots on the island, the festival is the perfect choice if you’re looking for a spot of suspense. According to Programme Director Carina Nunstedt, Visby is the ideal location for the event. “Visby is a magical city filled with history and exciting surroundings, just like the island itself. Crimetime Gotland will be a fantastic gathering for all those who love a thriller, whether in a book, film or on TV.” Gotland boasts several crime fiction authors who either live on the island or set their stories there. Håkan Nesser, Anna Jansson and Mari Jungstedt are among the many authors who welcome the initiative.” Already known as “Crime fiction week”, Crimetime Gotland takes place the week following Gotland Medieval Week. In its inaugural year, the festival showcases a thrilling four-day long late summer programme from 13 to 16 August. In total, around 90 activities are scheduled across 5–6 parallel stages, including meetings with international and Swedish authors, seminars, new thriller trends, crime fiction due to be made into films and TV series, writing workshops for old and young, a debutante stage and a stage for children and youths. The programme also includes murder mysteries and excursions.

Medieval Week on Gotland is Scandinavias largest medieval festival. Jousting, theater, music, food, drinks, medieval market, jesters, fire shows and so much more.

TOURNAMENTS THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER Each week in July and during Medieval Week in August you can see Sweden’s best knights in action. They fight for honour! Audiences of all ages will experience unforgettable entertainment.

Local produce with soul Are you a fan of excellent cuisine prepared with local produce? If the answer is yes, Gotland is for you. Not only does it top the charts for the most hours of sunlight during the summer, the island also boasts a number of more or less common plants and primeurs. Gotland’s growing conditions differ from the rest of Sweden thanks to its calcareous soils, temperate maritime climate and high volume of sunshine. Here you’ll find rare gems such as ramsons, wild leek and European dewberry, while the conditions for growing truffles and asparagus are ideal. Not only that, Gotland’s growing season is longer than other areas of Sweden thanks to its favourable climate.

An abundance of bulbs and berries If you take a walk through the woods of Gotland and sense the crisp scent of bulbs, it’s ramsons you can smell. Similar to garlic in taste and smell, its green leaves are used for cooking. Wild leek is another type of wild bulb, whose taste is similar to leek. Both of these bulbs make an excellent ingredient for soup. It’s said that those who eat three bowls of ramsons soup before Midsummer will stay healthy until Christmas. Worth a try, perhaps? Dewberries also grow freely on Gotland, and the small prickly bushes on which the berries grow can be found all over the island. The dewberry, which is related to the blackberry – is known as salmbär in Gotland. These berries are primarily used to make

jam – dewberry jam goes perfectly with the local renowned dessert saffron pancake.

Unique tastes Lamb rearing is commonplace on Gotland, and there’s no better place to eat lamb than here. The animals graze freely on the island, something reflected in the meat’s taste. Herbs and plants such as wild thyme, oregano, rosemary and rocket thrive in Gotland’s calcareous soils. These are consumed by animals grazing in the meadows, giving the meat its distinctive flavour. Truffles are another of the island’s delicacies. They may be expensive, but a small piece of truffle is enough to create a magical taste sensation. And if you’re a genuine truffle enthusiast, don’t miss November’s truffle festival, including truffle hunt, truffle market and a top class dinner. Asparagus may not be exclusive to Gotland, but it certainly thrives here – the year’s first Swedish harvest often comes from the island. The same is true for many other primeurs, with Gotland’s high volume of sunshine adding extra taste and sweetness.

25

Primeurs aplenty May and June is peak season for primeurs on Gotland, with many restaurants offering exclusive primeur menus during this period. The spotlight falls on primeurs during the Primeur Premier weekend, at Whitsun, from 22 to 24 May.

Gastronomic

Gotland

From north to south, you’ll find top quality restaurants all over Gotland. Many can be found in Visby, while others are located in more remote, rural parts of the island. As many as 27 of Gotland’s restaurants, bars and cafés feature in the prestigious White Guide. The island’s restaurants serve a wide range of cuisine, and its restaurateurs and chefs are renowned for their high level of professional pride. Many put a premium on locally sourced ingredients, harnessing all the wonderful flavours created by using produce from the island itself. Here are a selection of the venues you just have to visit.

Gotland

live

Beautiful tones resonate from a barn on Fårö. At an old limestone quarry, the sun sets to the rhythm of familiar songs. In a traditional cellar in central Visby, the music echoes between the walls. The base from world famous DJs thuds from the Visby harbour. A wide selection of Sweden’s most popular artists have taken the stage at some of Gotland’s most unique venues. High pace, hordes and nightclubs have long been a feature of Visby. For many an ice-cold drink in the afternoon is the highlight of a summer day. Rated one of Europe’s best Aprés beach clubs, Kallis has hosted major DJ acts including Avicii, Axwell and Rebecca & Fiona. Visby’s nightlife scene features pubs, bars and open-air venues for all tastes. If you enjoy a bustling, open-air setting, Krönet, Vinäger, Strands Veranda and Bolaget are all well worth a visit, and to continue the evening with a club set, Gutekällaren and Munken are both safe bets. Neighbouring Kallis, Wisby

Strand plays host to major concerts all year round, featuring acts like Agnes and Håkan Hellström. Thanks to the efforts of driven entrepreneurs, major Swedish artists like First Aid Kit, Sarah Dawn Finer, Bo Kaspers Orkester, Anna Ternheim and Christian Kjellvander have chosen to play on the Island, from wood barns in Fårö to pubs surrounded by fields and lanes. Sold-out concerts are just one sign that the Gotland countryside is bustling with activity.

Bo Kasper Sundström: “Playing at Gotland in the summer is special for us – being at Gåsemora is like performing in front of a home crowd. Besides the city festivals, when it comes to audience size Gåsemora is one of the biggest gigs we play during the summer – and it’s definitely one of the most beautiful.”

Joakim Nilsson: “This was the second time we’ve played at Gutekällaren and I think it was even better this time, if that’s possible! It was one of the wildest crowds we played for in 2014, and definitely one of the loudest. A really good club gig is an experience that’s hard to beat.”

Scaling new

heights Climbing is the ideal way to experience Gotland’s unique landscape while gaining a physical workout. Högklint offers excellent climbing, or why not try bouldering – climbing without a rope at low height. Gotland’s abundant limestone cliffs make it a unique location for climbing, and there are new experiences for beginners and seasoned climbers alike. Gotland Active Store’s Morgan Sjöström, who arranges climbing courses, is an expert on climbing on Gotland. “Many of the cliffs, though not all of them, can be climbed. Bouldering is a good option for experienced climbers, that is, climbing without a rope at low height. Requiring strength, technique and concentration, it’s a genuine challenge.”

New to climbing? Climbing is demanding on a number of levels. Besides the physical challenge, climbing trains mobility and requires good interactive skills – communicating with and trusting your fellow climbers is vital. Beginners, and those interested in the sport, should make their way to Högklint, just south of Visby, where the rock face falls 48 metres towards the sea – the perfect location for newcomers to climbing. “Högklint has activities for both kids and adults. There are several routes up the cliff face, with various degrees of difficulty,” explains Morgan. At Högklint you can try climbing as well as abseiling 10 metres down the rock face, with views over the sea. All climbing equipment can be borrowed, including harnesses, helmets, shoes, ropes, etc.

Climbing convention Gotland Boulder Session, a three-day national climbing meet-up, is held each year on the first weekend in May. Climbing routes are equations to be solved, and there’s a constant search for new challenges to overcome. “Bouldering sees climbers ascend a few metres from the ground, which suits beginners as well as experienced climbers. A mat is placed underneath for protection, in case the climber loses their grip,” adds Morgan. 33

At one with nature

gotland on two wheels Gotland has a well deserved reputation as a cycling hotspot, and there are few better ways to explore the island than on two wheels. Whether you’re on a cycling holiday, mountain biking or training for your next road race, Gotland is the place to be. Cycling is a great way to get around Gotland, and the island boasts a wealth of scenic routes close to the coastline. Take a detour off the beaten track and discover farm shops, cafés and hidden picnic spots. Cycle by sheep, seastacks and roads resplendent with blue-weed – the striking natural beauty of Gotland is best discovered on the saddle of a bike.

Trips on two wheels CYCLING HOLIDAYS | Considering a cycling holiday on Gotland? For maximum convenience, leave your bike at home as there are plenty to hire on the island. It’s also a good idea to hire a trailer for your luggage. This can easily be detached if you want to take a short ride from where you pitch your tent. You can camp all over the island, but make sure you have right of public access. If you don’t fancy sleeping in a tent, Gotland is crawling with hostels, camping sites, bed & breakfasts and guest houses.

why not sign up for Gotland360, a bike race over two days in September.

Get off the beaten track MOUNTAINBIKE | Gotland also has plenty to offer for those choosing to stray from the main roads. The island’s small winding tracks and unique landscape are tailor made for mountain biking. The terrain varies between forestland, small dirt tracks and more demanding routes, and for those who want to put their skills to the test, the Nordic Extreme Biking MTB event takes place in October. The race follows the toughest section of the course used for the Gotland Grand National Enduro event the week before.

The road to discovery LONG-DISTANCE CYCLING | Are you a cycling enthusiast? Do you cycle 10 kilometres a day without effort? Fancy combining your passion with a holiday break? Then Gotland is the place for you. If you want to avoid cars, take the tarmac cycle route from Västergarn to Lummelunda (via Visby), on the west of the island, although there are several smaller roads with less traffic as an alternative. And if you need an energy boost, you’ll find plenty of places to visit along the way. If you’re bitten by the cycling bug after a summer in the saddle, 35

Motorcycling Prefer your cycle to pack a little more horsepower? Sign up for the Enduro Safari, or check out the Gotland Grand National enduro event. And if you feel the need for speed, take your bike along to the Gotland Ring circuit.

Golfing on Gotland Gotland boasts six scenic golf courses offering a variety of challenges. Play a links and a parkland course one day, and a forest and heathland venue the next. The island’s courses are playable from early spring to late autumn.

Visby Golf Club Situated on Kronholmen, Visby Golf Club is one of the best and most picturesque golfing venues in Sweden. The course is also ranked in the top 25 in continental Europe. Lying 25 kilometres south of Visby, this is a links course in a beautifully scenic setting, with all 27 holes offering a sea view. www.visbygk.com

Ljugarns GK Ljugarns Golf Club is home to a narrow, challenging nine-hole woodland course requiring a strategic approach. Located nearby the village of Ljungarn, the venue offers excellent availability even during the peak summer season. The course is open for play all year round, provided there is no snow on the ground. www.ljugarnsgk.se

Gotska GK Gotska Golf Club is situated by Visby Airport, just a couple of kilometres north of the city centre. This comparatively open heathland course is designed by the esteemed golfing profile Jack Wenman. Calling for a cautious approach, the course offers challenges not immediately apparent. www.gotskagk.se

Slite Golf Club This beautiful, demanding 18-hole woodland course features strategically placed water hazards. Designed by Peter Nordwall, the course harnesses the surrounding nature in the best possible way. Every hole has a truly unique feel, and the course suits all standards of player. www.slitegk.se

När GK There’s something about the atmosphere at När Golf Club. This 18-holer is reminiscent of a Scottish heathland course, featuring a varying layout in authentic Gotland terrain close to the coast. Cabins are available to hire next to the club. www.nargk.se

Gumbalde GK Gumbalde Golf Club is a well-groomed 18-hole parkland course nestling in the Gotland countryside, offering firm, even greens, fine fairways and meandering water hazards. There is a hotel and restaurant right beside the clubhouse. www.gumbalde.se

The rough & smooth

OF Gotland

Lambskin and limestone are two materials strongly associated with Gotland. We asked two experts to explain more about these materials and their unique characteristics. Gotland is home to around 60,000 sheep, or lambs, as they’re known on the island. Lambskin is a wonderful natural material possessing many fantastic attributes. Its heating qualities are widely recognised, but did you know that lambskin also has a cooling effect on hot days? Kjell Nilsson is chair of Skinnriket, an association engaged with developing the quality of lambskin on Gotland. “For 100 years, islanders here have been breeding lambs with the skin in mind, not only for their meat and wool. According to Professor of Textiles Basil Kardasis, this makes Gotland’s lambskin the world’s best.” Sound livestock farming also contributes to the quality of the skin. The animals are allowed to graze in a natural environment, with feed and grass suitable for growing lambs. Tended to every day, they also have access to minerals and fresh water. The price of skin can vary, but Kjell has some tips to ensure you get what you pay for: A producer’s affiliation with Skinnriket is a seal of approval in itself. A good skin should feel soft and silky, with a glowing lustre. Examine the curl of the skin. If it is really shiny, pliable and relatively thick, you have a good product.

Nothing says Gotland like its limestone houses. These chalk-white or light-grey dwellings light up the barren landscape of the island. There has always been an abundance of limestone on Gotland, so using it as a building material was a logical step. The island’s limestone is 400 million years old, and it’s not unusual to find fossils here. Gotland’s limestone is of a unique type – there is no stone of the same colour elsewhere in Sweden. It can be found abroad, although not of the equivalent quality. Pernilla Lövgren from Slite Stenhuggeri describes limestone as a timeless material. “The stone’s appearance depends on where it was quarried. Norrvange limestone has a light grey/beige finish, while Södervange is light-grey with reddish-pink strains. Both are quarried in northern Gotland. “Hoburg” marble has a more reddish appearance, containing more fossils, and can be found in the south of the island.” Limestone is used for everything from flooring and walls to tables, window sills and kitchen benches.

39

Art & design Gotland has long been a magnet for artists and designers. Perhaps it’s the distinctive landscape and unique light which makes artist after artist choose to open their studio on the island. Naturally, the volume of locally produced arts and crafts is reflected on the shelves of the island’s stores. Take a shopping trip in Visby and you’ll encounter an abundance of beautiful Gotland design.

Tove Adman

Tove Adman has become well known for her fine creations utilising concrete and aluminium. “The concrete’s sensuality gives rise to brilliant design solutions, sometimes combined with wood,” says Tove. In July you can visit her summer shop at the old petrol station in Östergarn, with limited edition products also on display. For the rest of the year, Tove’s designs can be found in a number of shops on the island, including Akantus, Bertholdsson & Holm and Margus. You can also visit her online store. For more info, visit www.toveadman.se

Skulpturfabriken Situated on the old island estate of Pilgårds, the sculpture factory is owned and run by sculptor and designer Stina Lindholm. Concrete creations and austere simplicity have become the hallmarks of Stina’s design philosophy, inspired by the island’s nature and culture. For more info visit www.skulpturfabriken.se 40

Situated in the north of Visby, Galberget is home to the city’s old gallows, which most likely date back to the 15th century.

“Public executions were part of the judicial system for hundreds of years”

Street named after knacker Did you know that the name Rackarbacken (Knacker’s Hill), in Visby, comes from the era when the knacker lived and worked inside the walls over Norderport? Take a walk up the steep hill and you’ll be richly rewarded with a wonderful view over Visby, and the sea.

42

Paying with

your life High up on a rock ledge to the north of the city walls lie Visby’s old gallows, once strategically placed to discourage the public from committing crimes. These days, it’s a popular picnic site and vantage point. 1845 marked the last public execution carried out in Visby. Hatter Anders Johan Hasselberg was punished for the murder of Sundberg, a stove maker and usurer. The accused was beheaded by axe.

A different era Public executions were part of the judicial system for hundreds of years. The death penalty was completely abolished in Sweden in 1921. The gallows in Visby are believed to date back to the 1400s, when the “three-legged mare” began appearing in the major European cities, of which the Hanseatic city of Visby was one. The word “gallows”, which implies a site intended for hanging, is in fact a little misleading. “Execution ground” is a more accurate term to describe what took place there. Symbolically situated high up on the mountain, the gallows hill was visible for all the ships which docked in the city. This signalled the city’s status as a bastion of law and order.

A fate worse than death There are death penalties, and there are death penalties. You may think death is the ultimate punishment, but the precise sentence was based on the method of execution as well as what happened to the body afterwards. If you were lucky you’d be buried; if not, your body could be cut up, with the pieces impaled on poles for the public 43

to behold. Wrongdoers could also be spared hanging and sentenced to beheading, considered a more lenient penalty. Hangings bore no relation to the images depicted in films, where the neck is broken, rather a knot was tied in a short rope at the neck, with the victim slowly strangled to their death.

Making a living from death Executioner, hangman and headsman are all different terms for the same occupation: carrying out the executions. A profession less well known was that of the knacker. The knacker performed the community’s least enviable tasks – those best left unseen – such as emptying the latrines and slaughtering and burying animals. He was also responsible for burying the bodies when the executioner had done his duty at the gallows hill.

Beyond the summer

Gotland is a vibrant island all year round. Here we list some of the events and activities you can enjoy beyond the summer months.

44

Fårönatta A popular happening which gets bigger year by year. One Saturday at the end of September, Fårö lets loose long into the night. Choose among a range of events, including music, museum tours, storytelling at the English cemetery, film screenings, Bergman safari, flea markets and open restaurants and shops. Come and experience Fårö as you’ve never seen it before.

Truffle hunt During the autumn, the Burgundy truffle becomes ripe, albeit well hidden, in the Gotland soil. Come along on an exciting hunt for this exclusive delicacy. Dinner is served during the evening, with truffles appearing in every dish. We can also recommend the Gotland truffle festival, in November, featuring a truffle market, seminars, a ceremony in the cathedral and a top class truffle dinner, in addition to the truffle hunts.

the season of Advent Visiting Gotland during Advent is the perfect way to get in the Christmas spirit. December showcases markets, Christmas smorgasbords, a living advent calendar, a Santa Clause parade, concerts and much more. Go Christmas shopping for arts, crafts and delicacies and enjoy a hot drink at one of the city’s many cosy cafés. All this in a winter setting taken straight out of a Christmas tale.

Stag and hen parties Take your gang of revellers on a mini-break for your stag or hen party – Gotland offers something for everyone. Try go-karting, horse riding, Gutnish games, climbing or why not relax in a hot tub? With your base in Visby, you’ll be close to most of what the island has to offer, and take the chance to explore the city’s selection of well-renowned restaurants, open all year round.

Golf weekend Wherever you are on Gotland, you’re never further than 30 kilometres from the nearest golf course, and the island boasts some of Sweden’s best holes. Thanks to its temperate climate, Gotland boasts a long golf season, with courses open from March or April all the way into November. Golf is best combined with good food and a trip to the bar! Many of Visby’s best bars and restaurants are open all year round.

Fishing for trout If you like fishing, Gotland is the ideal destination. The island offers brilliant conditions for trout fishing, with an 80-kilometre stretch of coastline and the rarity of a natural population of sea-water trout (rather than the farm-

raised trout you’ll find in many other locations). Visit in autumn or spring for the best fishing. To maximise your chances of catching trout, we recommended a guided tour by FishYourDream. 45

Primeur season on Gotland Springtime sees primeurs in season on Gotland. The highlight is the Primeur Premier weekend from 22 to 24 May, a festival of food showcasing Gotland’s primeurs, local produce and delicacies. For three flavour-filled days, visitors have the chance to visit open farms and purchase directly from food producers or Visby’s primeur market. And don’t miss the great primeur dinner, put together by some of the island’s best restaurateurs.

Artistic outing in May Our open studios are a must for all art lovers. From 14 to 17 May, the weekend of Ascension, scores of artistic craftsmen and designers open their doors to visitors and sell their wares. Before taking to the roads, make sure you visit Visby’s art museum, where exhibitors put their work on display from 25 April to 24 May. If you can’t make it to the open studios, why not do your own artistic outing around Gotland? Many venues are open all year round, but make sure you check in advance.

Gotland Grand National Running for all of 30 years, Gotland Grand National is the world’s largest enduro event. The event is held on October 24 and is a real celebration for the people. The competition regularly attracts approximately 2,200 entrants from all over the world, watched by around 15,000 spectators, and takes place at Tofta, around 10 kilometres from Visby.

Nordic Extreme Running Do you like running, and enjoy a good challenge? Then the Nordic Extreme Running event, held on November 1, is right up your street. The race follows the toughest sections of the course used for the Gotland Grand National, featuring mud, water and hilly terrain. You can choose to run alone, in a pair or as part of a team.

What do Gotlanders do beyond the summer months? For many people, Gotland is all about sun, summer and swimming, but what’s it really like to live and work on the island? We asked Veronica di Corsi, an islander who returned to Gotland two and a half years ago, to give us a glimpse into her everyday life. Veronica lets us in on what she loves about living on Gotland.

Visby’s Beach promenade Whatever the time of year, I love taking walks on the beach. I never get tired of seeing the waves roll in while I stroll along the walls. For me, the scent of the sea and fluctuating nature are a source of inspiration and energy.

cuisine in every corner One of the best things about Visby is the large number of excellent restaurants. On a night off, I really enjoy making an unplanned visit to a local spot with friends or family. Surfers is a big favourite, and I love their Sichuan menu.

purchase local produce Maybe I’m just imagining it, but I think locally produced food normally tastes a little better. That’s why I often go to one of our farm shops to buy food straight from source. This is when I really appreciate being so close to the countryside, since there are several farm shops just 10–20 minutes from town.

the stone coast During the spring and autumn my partner and I enjoy going mountain biking along Stenkusten, on Gotland’s northern coastline. It’s a fantastic feeling as the sea meets the sky, or when you take a break and gaze out across the barren, open landscape. On the way home, we normally stop by Själsö bakery to get warm and enjoy their delicious buns.

sumptuous sundays For me and my family, a perfect Sunday starts with a long brunch at one of the island’s cafés or brunch spots. Then maybe it’s off to town for a spot of shopping. Everything is close by on Gotland, and whatever you’re looking for is often right around the corner. This is one of the reasons I’m so happy I came back to the island.

INFLYTTARBYRÅN (RELOCATION SERVICES) Got a taste for Gotland? Then get in touch with Inflyttarbyrån (Relocation services) who can help with information and answer questions about moving to the island. 49

Magical Meetings — All Year Round!

You might experience Fårö from the bicycle seat on a fall day with its vibrant colours, be enchanted by the beautiful ruins in the Visby town center, or take off on an action

Wisby Strand

meeting by the sea It’s no wonder Wisby Strand was voted the most inspiring meeting venue in the Nordic region. Here is all you need to arrange a successful conference, including customised premises for every meeting, a kitchen serving everything from gala dinners to gourmet experiences and a fantastic location nearby the city centre as well as the sea. For many visitors, Gotland is perceived to be further away than a 35-minute flight or a 3-hour boat trip. The continental character and change of scenery are appreciated by many, partly explaining why Visby is such a popular choice for conferences. Since opening in 2007, Wisby Strand has claimed the title of the Nordic region’s most inspiring meeting venue, and if you’ve been there, it’s not hard to see why. Featuring two sides constructed entirely from glass, this amazing building is just 50 meters from the shore, with Almedalen its closest neighbour. Wisby Strand is a genuinely unique venue for meetings and events.

Constant improvements Carl-Johan Stålhammar has been managing director here since 2011. Constantly working to make improvements to the facility, he strives to keep Wisby Strand active all year round. Stålhammar and his team have put a lot of focus on the atmosphere of the centre, seeking to avoid the sterile, impersonal feel typical of several larger conference facilities. “Even though we have large volumes of visitors, our aim is to provide an intimate atmosphere, with green plants and textiles creating a warm and welcoming ‘living room’ feeling,” says Stålhammar.

Premises to feel at home in With capacity for 1,000 people, Wisby Strand’s modern congress hall has all the technology required for a successful meeting. The exhibition areas are located right next to the conference premises, and a wide selection of top rate hotels providing excellent value accommodation options are just a few minutes’ walk away. Nor is anything left to chance when it comes to food. Wisby Strand takes great pride in serving high quality, delicious conference lunches for 1,000 participants as well as delectable dinners for smaller parties. Whether you fancy brunch, a buffet or a three-course dinner, a meal here is always a fantastic experience. 51

Local gems are something most people keep to themselves, but for Maria Soxbo and Emma Aspelin at Gotlandstips.se, the opposite applies. Here they give us the lowdown on some places well worth a visit on a trip from north to south. N

Restaurants & events

Kalkladan, Bungenäs

Stora torget 1, Visby

BUNGENÄS MATSAL

BAKFICKAN

Few could have predicted that an old, traffic-free military area far up in north-east Gotland would become the island’s new hotspot, but this is the place to be – two restaurants, live events at c/o Bungenäs and a range of exhibitions at Kalkladan. A must visit! (And don’t miss Fint o fult flea market on the road from Fårösund!)

No visit to Visby is complete without enjoying herring at Bakfickan. This classic fish restaurant on Stora Torget never disappoints, and its charming atmosphere, featuring colourful minibulb light strands and unconventional furniture, sets a mood to match the flavour of the food. The restaurant’s few tables are in hot demand during the summer, but you’ll be rewarded for your patience.

Shop and café

SKULPTURFABRIKEN Boge Pilgårds 220

On the outskirts of the industrial town of Slite you’ll find Skulpturfabriken, a vibrant venue with large lawns, a sparingly cultivated ornamental garden, a spacious shop on two floors stocking products from Stina Lindholm and other designers, and a small, cosy café selling sweet treats.

From the friendly staff to the Seglarstugan cabin offering sea views and the delicious buns, this experience is so perfectly packaged by surfing buddies Fredrik Ekman and Claes Johansson that you’ll never want to leave. And thanks to the bakery’s bread van, you can always get your hands on a vanilla bun.

Maria, who runs Berså, used to have a café in Visby, but she fell in love with this old Baptist chapel on route 140, 15 kilometres south of the city. Choosing one of Åsa Lindström’s fantastic mugs is a tough proposition, and since the shop isn’t much bigger than a postage stamp, you can’t stand around looking all day long. So why not have a bite to eat in the crêperie or enjoy a game of boules on the lawn before making your choice? For the collectors among us, it’s the same drill as always!

TOVE ADMAN

Östergarn Filippuse 330 Queen of concrete Tove Adman lives and works in an old Shell petrol Station in Östergarn, and it is here she designs her wonderful creations, primarily using concrete. The shop is open during the summer, and the setting itself is highly inspirational. If you don’t have a car, you can always admire (or purchase) Tove’s treasures at Akantus and H10 in Visby.

Restaurants & events

GULDKAGGEN

Burgsvik Harbour When this classic venue at Burgsvik Harbour opened its doors again last summer, it was a resounding success. Here you can enjoy fantastic potato-based cuisine at Potobers restaurant – we strongly recommend their crisply perfect fish and chips – sample 100 different types of beer in Potobers bar or cool off with an ice cream in Glada Glassen.

STELOR

Västergarn Stelor 117 No summer is complete without a sunset dinner at Stelor Kitchen, and if you get the chance, stay the night – all six rooms feature unique interior design, and all the furnishings are for sale! The fine wood barn also plays host to gigs and film screenings. Stelor is located on route 140, south of Visby, and the hotel is open all year round.

In days past, it was quite an event when ships arrived and departed in Visby. The M/S Thjelvar, pictured here, is listing slightly as the passengers stand on the port side and wave goodbye. The photo was taken at the start of the 1950s.

In the middle of the last century, cars were still loaded onto the vessel by crane. Larger vehicles, such as buses, boarded and alighted using ramps (see picture). The first RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) ferry began operation in 1955.

70

When the sea ice encircled the island, the final part of the journey was made on foot. This picture was taken during the war years, when the Swedish flag adorned the vessels on the hull side.

On Gotland’s keels

since 1865 In the spring of 1865, Gotland mobilised its expertise to come up with a better, more regular transport service to and from the island – all year round. Gotland, the steamer operator currently named Rederi AB Gotland – or Gotlandsbolaget as it is commonly known – was established back in 1865, which means this year marks its 150th anniversary. Ever since Wisby, the operator’s first vessel, completed its maiden voyage from Stockholm to Visby on 25 June 1866, remarkable progress has been made. The steamers of the 1800s took 13 hours to reach the island, at the quickest, while today’s comfortable, high-speed vessels sail from Nynäshamn to Visby in just 3 hours. “In its first year, the operator provided two double crossings per week, but today, up to 18 services a day sail between Gotland and our two mainland ports,” explains Håkan Johansson, managing director at Rederi AB Gotland. Nowadays, just like 150 years ago, the ferry services represent Gotland’s main artery and the islanders’ route to the mainland. Practically everything consumed on Gotland arrives by ferry, and everything which is produced departs on the route. Planning and construction of a totally new generation of LNG-operated ferries to serve the Gotland route is now under way. The first vessel, which has already been ordered, will be the first passenger service running on natural gas sailing under the Swedish flag. The move will allow the island’s ferry operations to be developed more sustainably, while benefitting from greater capacity and reduced environmental impact. The ship will be delivered in 2017.

A familiar silhouette on Gotland’s transport route. M/S Gotland and M/S Visby were built in the former Yugoslavia at the start of the 1970s. The vessels are still in operation to this day, in the Mediterranean.

HSC Gotlandia II, one of the modern high-speed services operating the Gotland route. The new vessels sail from Nynäshamn to Visby in just over three hours. 71
