Brewing culture Brewing beer is a work of art, and Gotland is home to a number of local breweries. Maybe this is an extension of the island tradition of brewing dricke, a yeasty alcoholic beverage reminiscent of pale lager. The last few years have seen a growing interest in beer among the public, with many small breweries emerging. There are six breweries on Gotland, considered to be many on an island of around 57,000 inhabitants. Johan Spendrup, MD and master brewer at Gotlands Bryggeri, claims Gotland has a brewing culture which is unique not only in Sweden, but the whole of Europe. “There is a deeply rooted passion for beer on Gotland, which probably comes from the tradition of brewing dricke. There’s a real creative spirit, with many home brewers. We even get calls from people who want to borrow brewer’s yeast.”
EXPANSION. More and more breweries are emerging, and for now, there’s room for expansion. Johan Spendrup identified this potential back in 2007 when returning to Gotland after a period spent in England. The choice of beers in Gotland’s restaurants was pretty limited compared to what he’d been used to in English pubs, and he also noticed that a wide selection of beers helped spark an interest for sampling different types. Taking his experiences back to Gotland, Johan helped restaurants broaden their selections, which led to a 30-percent rise in beer sales. Moving forward, this wider choice was also of benefit to other players. Only in operation since 2014, Hop Shed Brewery has already reached the luxurious situation where demand outweighs capacity. As a result, the brewery is relo-
cating to larger premises in Hästnäs, outside Visby, where a sampling room will also be added. Barlingbo Bryggeri is in the same situation. A brewery which started with two beer-enthusiasts operating privately in a garage. “We brewed so much that we had to take it a step further. We ended up applying for all the necessary permits and six months later, in April 2014, our brewery was up and running,” says Jonny Warg, one of the founders.
LOCALLY GROWN. Barlingbo Bryggeri is committed to using local produce as much as possible. On the lookout for Gotland hops last autumn, the brewery managed to acquire over 50 kilos, which covers the lion’s share of its production. Spendrups is currently building premises in Visby harbour which Gotlands Bryggeri is set to let in order to expand. Not only will the brewery be able to boost its current capacity, a showroom and restaurant are also being added. Just like Barlingbo Bryggeri, the brewery hopes to be able to use Gotland hops in its beer, with the first step to increase cultivation of hops on the island. “The restaurant will serve food made from local ingredients, and smaller Gotland producers will also be able to showcase and sell their products here,” says Johan Spendrups. Currently in full swing, the project is set to be completed in 2017. 23
BEER TOURS Hop Shed Brewery is taking advantage of the growth of interest in beer by offering tours on its very own “beer bus”. As well as swinging by Hop Shed, Barlingbo Bryggeri and Gotlands Bryggeri, the tour offers sampling and the chance to learn more about beer. Tours are operated all year round.

Ljugarn
Lovely
Ljugarn Ever since the turn of the century, summer visitors in search of swimming have flocked to the village of Ljugarn on the east coast of Gotland. Back then it was mainly affluent Stockholmers that found their way to the seaside resort in search of tranquillity, but nowadays families and experience-seeking holidaymakers are drawn to its shallow beaches, wide range of restaurants and excellent exercise opportunities. With its child-friendly vibe and excellent activities, Ljugarn is a popular pick for tourists. Those in search of adventure are spoilt for choice, whether you fancy jogging along the kilometre-long beach promenade, cycling along winding country roads or pushing the limits with wind- or kitesurfing. Tennis enthusiasts can sharpen their form on one of the village’s four newly renovated outdoor courts, while golfers can polish their swing at Ljungarn Golf Club in Ardre, a narrow, challenging nine-hole woodland course. And if you’d rather explore the beautiful surroundings on foot, there are several hiking trails starting from the village.
The area is filled with outing destinations with a strong sense of history. Just north of the beach is the old fishing community of Vitvär, which neighbours the impressive sea stack expanse in Folhammar nature reserve. Stroll along Strandvägen and you’ll discover a string of magnificent 1920s summer villas, while Ljugarn harbour is the perfect spot for a cool drink and a little boatspotting. Despite its size, Ljugarn is home to several restaurants. If you’re feeling peckish there are a range of great restaurants and cafés to choose from, with a couple even featuring in the White Guide.

Nikkedi-bukk* *kids’ games
To call Gotland an island for children is no exaggeration. Its landscape offers everything from fascinating phenomena such as sea stacks and the Lummelunda Caves to shallow shorelines – perfect for bathing. There are a range of fun attractions to be found across the island. Here are a selection.
On track A steam engine from 1920 puffs and blows, with smoke spiralling from the funnel. The train sets off. A conductor dressed in the uniform of the day clips tickets. The journey is from Hesselby station, in Dalhem, to Roma. Before boarding the train in Hesselby, visit the local museum and learn about everything from trolleys to locomotive lights and tickets.
An extraordinary farm The charming farm at Gangvide has been under family ownership since 1715. However, during the last few years the owners Kickan and Per have moved from growing crops to developing fun activities. Try pony riding, hire a canoe or why not take a tour in a diesel tractor?
Gotland pony safari Bring out the adventurer in you for a nerve-jangling trip. Lojsta hed is home to around 50 wild Gotland ponies (almost 80 in the summer when the foals are born). Gotland ponies (called Gotlands russ) have been on the island since ancient times. Experience the spirit of safari as you sneak among the bushes in Lojsta hed’s pony park and search for the horses.
Playing in trees Most of us have dreamed about living in a tree at some point, but not many have actually done it. Visit the tree houses in Kneippbyn and make your dream come true. And what’s more, you can live next door to Pippi Longstocking and all the fun and games Kneippbyn has to offer.
The joy of discovery Visit Fenomenalen and have a load of fun at the same time as learning about everything from air pressure to connecting electricity. This family-orientated science centre is as much fun for adults as for kids – when a two-year-old has fun pressing a button, granddad can marvel at the mechanics behind the process.

Marshland
Gotland has many island waterways, or tr채sk (marshlands) as the locals calls it. These waterways are distinctive from many others in Sweden due to their lime-rich bedrock. The lime makes it alkaline and lacking in plants, which creates a clear and turquiose water. A popular choice for bathers.

34
an INSPIRING
ISLAND With its distinctive landscape and unique materials, Gotland has long been the inspiration for idiosyncratic architecture and construction influenced by the island. Instead of drastically changing the prevailing nature, this approach seeks to maintain it. Bungenäs is home to the development of a new residential area, with construction partially centred around the old military bunkers. Situated on northern Gotland, Bungenäs is a peninsula which, as a military site, has long been restricted to the public. It was also once the site of Gotland’s largest limestone quarry. These days, the landscape features beautiful, distinctive nature, with military bunkers and the quarry’s shaft openings adding to the character of the area. A construction project has been under way since 2008 with the aim of harnessing these beautiful surroundings and building residential properties based on the existing landscape, retaining the character of the area.
LIVING IN A BUNKER. Erik Gardell at Skälsö Arktitekter was involved in the drafting of a zoning plan for the area, with the architects also designing several of the houses which are now completed or under production. “The zoning plan enables around 100 houses to be built, 30 of which are completed or under construction.” The notion of living in a military bunker may seem strange to many, conjuring images of a dark, cramped environment, but Erik Gardell challenges this perception with ease. “The bunkers are fantastic because this is such a unique environment. One of the first houses we built was a bunker located completely underground. After digging out one side and opening it up, the space was totally transformed by light and air.” Erik describes how he enjoys creating space by only making minimal changes. “Instead of seeing a site as a blank sheet of paper, we try to harness the potential which is already there. An example was widening the bunkers’ portholes to let in light and create a view.” 35
OUTSIDE INSIDE. At Bungenäs, the landscape and surroundings combine to inspire the architecture and design of each house. Construction takes place using materials from the island, primarily concrete from Gotland limestone and wood from Gotland timber. Each house is adapted to the specific plot, according to the source of sunlight, surrounding woodland and similar factors. To illustrate the point, Erik describes a house on the edge of Bungenäs limestone quarry, adjacent to a shaft heap. “We used concrete and untreated timber here which turns grey over time, assuming the same colour as the surroundings. In keeping with the other plots, we retained the existing natural habitat outside the house instead of laying a lawn, for example. Removing the borders between internal and external space is another key aspect of the project. This includes patios which are easy to access, with large overhanging roofs, where the door can be left open even when it rains. Large windows accentuating the surrounding nature so it becomes part of the internal space are another key feature.

Ingmar Bergman during filming on FĂĽrĂś.
A cultural
World Heritage Site Ingmar Bergman continues to enjoy a lofty status in the world of film. Based on Fårö, the Bergman Center was designated as a Treasure of European Film Culture during 2015. Visitors from all over the world converge on Fårö to discover the island Bergman called home. We’ve become accustomed to the sight of Ingmar Bergman in our wallets, with the director featuring on the new 200-kronor notes since October 2015. Bergman is rated as a true Swedish icon, but what is it that makes him so popular the world over? “I’d say Bergman’s gift was to focus on subjects which people can understand and relate to. His films were often about relationships between parents and children or couples, as well as childhood memories, and he was also a truly brilliant storyteller. So even if his films have a few miles on the clock, they’re never out of date,” says Jonas Beltrame-Linné at the Bergman Center on Fårö. According to Jonas, many Swedes have a perception of Bergman’s films being hard or deep. “If you are of this opinion, I think you should give him a second chance and watch something more easygoing, like the comedies Smiles of a Summer Night or A Lesson in Love, for example.”
GLOBAL CELEBRITY GAINS WORLD HERITAGE STATUS. Bergman’s work occupies an important place
in the movie canon, with the director one of those whose films have become universally referenced. For instance, Woody Allen makes a reference to Bergman’s character Death (from The Seventh Seal) in his Love and Death. In spring 2015, the Bergman Center was designated as a place of great historical value within European film when it was nominated as aTreasure of European Film Culture by Europe’s equivalent to the Oscar Academy, the European Film Academy.
This is comparable to attaining World Heritage Site accreditation in the world of film. “This is extremely important for us,” explains Jonas Beltrame-Linné. As a result of the designation, the Bergman Center needs to start thinking more internationally.
THE UNIQUE CHARM OF FÅRÖ. So what about Fårö,
the place Bergman called home. What made him fall in love with the island? “He wrote in his autobiography that it was like returning home. Thanks to the light, the serene tranquillity, the distinctive landscape and the horizon, he was able to find an inner peace here. I can understand what he ment. Fårö is a special place, even in comparison to the rest of Gotland.” The charm that made Bergman fall for Fårö currently draws visitors keen to discover its unique landscape and enduring appeal. “In February, a guy from the States rang on the door of the Bergman Center. He’d come to Fårö because of Bergman and was so disappointed the Center was closed that I let him in and showed him around the island, including some of the sites where the director had filmed. Involved with film himself, he said he could understand what Bergman was drawn to; that the island had a unique charm,” adds Beltrame-Linné. It’s virtually impossible to capture this charm in words. It has to be experienced to be believed.
THE BERGMAN CENTER THE BERGMAN CENTER is located in the heart of Fårö, on Gotland, and is open from 1 May to 18 September. The venue features exhibitions about Bergman as well as Fårö. It also runs guided tours, which include visits to filming locations around the island.
BERGMAN WEEK takes place annually in week 26, running from 27 June to 3 July this year. The week sees Fårö filled with concerts, films, theatre performances, discussions with guests from Sweden and overseas and much more.
IN SPRING 2015 the Bergman Center was designated as a Treasure of European Film Culture by the European Film Academy, confirming its status as a site of great historical value within European film. You can find more information about current exhibitions, guides and events at bergmancenter.se.

Akantus Situated in central Visby, Akantus stocks a charming mix of new, vintage and antique items. Here you’ll find local design products, from for example Tove Adman as well as treats for the kids, rugs and Japanese porcelain. At the back of the shop is the Medieval vault, featuring furniture from Gotland and other antiques carefully selected by the owners themselves. Authenticity and tradition combined! akantusvisby.se
Tove Adman
Kränku Te & kaffe
Tove Adman has become well known for her fine creations utilising concrete and aluminium. “The concrete’s sensuality gives rise to brilliant design solutions, sometimes combined with wood,” says Tove. In July you can visit her summer shop at the old petrol station in Östergarn, with limited edition products also on display. For the rest of the year, Tove’s designs can be found in a number of shops on the island, including Akantus, Bertholdsson & Holm and Margus. You can also purchase items via her online store. toveadman.se
Located in central Visby, Kränku Te & Kaffe is an old-fashioned tea shop in a constant state of change. Here you can buy tea, coffee and sweets over the counter, and there are also chocolates and spices as well as a large porcelain section featuring specially chosen items. There are more than 100 types of tea and over 30 of the shop’s own blends, with Guteblandning the most prominent, popular choice. If you fancy something hot, order a freshly brewed cup of tea or coffee to go. In 2015, Kränku was voted Swedish Shop of the year at the Retail Awards at Cirkus, Stockholm. kraenku.se 38
Skulpturfabriken
2016
Situated on the old island estate of Pilgårds, Skulpturfabriken (the Sculpture Factory) is owned and run by sculptor and designer Stina Lindholm. Concrete creations and austere simplicity have become the hallmarks of Stina’s design philosophy, inspired by the island’s nature and culture. 2016 saw the addition of a gallery for arts, crafts and design on the estate. skulpturfabriken.se

With a flair for
skin Gotland’s sheepskin is said to be the best in the world. Ödins Garveri in Visby has been working with this fantastic material since the 19th century. Stepping inside the old post-and-plank house in Almedalen in which Ödins Garveri is housed is to sample a taste of authentic craftsmanship. From the mid 19th century to 1974, these premises were the site of the tannery itself, with centuries of activity embedding the pleasant scent of skin and leather into its walls. Ödins Garveri is currently run by Eva Bjersander, who is keen to preserve the authentic tradition of craftsmanship associated with the tannery. Working alongside her colleagues Tina and Maria, she purchases material, sews clothes and furnishings and runs the store. Among other products, the shelves are filled with independently produced waistcoats, caps, gloves and cushions made from lambskin. Both sheep- and lambskin are also available, with all products selected by Eva herself. “We purchase skin straight from the island’s farmers.” As well as skin and products made from skin, they also stock other items which perfectly complement their assortment, such as independently designed blankets made at Klippan wool factory and Danish woollen slippers. What characterises your products? “A small-scale approach to creating high quality products. We also offer a personal touch. We sew pretty much anything and often stand behind the counter, so our customers can meet who sewed their product. We stock a range of readily sewn products, but if you need to adjust something or want an item in another colour we can order it for you. We tailor and sew items in line with our customers’ needs.”

A medieval
festival 54
Medieval Visby is positively brimming with activity. During the eight-day long festival over 40,000 expectant people visit the 500 events on the schedule, both in and outside the city. With people in the mood to make merry and mix, the atmosphere is upbeat. Medieval bands appear on stages and in ruins, performing everything from refined concerts to more fun-filled choices, while the spectacular fire shows create a mood at once imposing and intimate. Medieval pubs are the perfect watering holes to visit between events and provide a meeting place for new friendships to be made each day.
The 33rd Medieval Week takes place from 7 to 14 August this year. This massive event offers music, theatre, fire shows, arts and crafts, lectures, cuisine and a large Medieval market.
THE BATTLE OF WISBY AND MEDIEVAL TOURNAMENT THIS SUMMER, participants from all over Europe will converge on the island to recreate the great battles from 1361, when the Danish king invaded Gotland. The recreation involves hundreds of armed soldiers depicting how the battles are said to have unfolded. This takes place on two occasions: Mästerby, Thursday 11 August Visby, Saturday 13 August
EXPERIENCE THE MOST action-packed events of the Medieval period, a historical extravaganza for the whole family. Watch as knights clash on horseback, archers find their targets and jesters entertain. Get swept up in the action; the crowd are encouraged to holler, boo and cheer and become part of the show. 55

Gotland by
bike
Travelling by bike, the journey is as fulfilling as the end goal. Gotland has a reputation as a cyclist’s paradise, perfect for cycling holidays, excursions, mountainbiking and long-distance cycling. Cycling enthusiast David Skoog works full time arranging cycling trips on Gotland. What is so special about cycling on Gotland? “To begin with there are hardly any hills, which the holiday cyclists appreciate above all, and the weather is generally fine. In my view, all the excellent roads are also a big advantage. Get off the 140 routes and there are loads of smaller roads with excellent tarmac and hardly any traffic, even during peak season. The extensive road network means you can reach many of the small remote spots without needing to turn back.”
LONG-DISTANCE. In September 2015,
David Skoog tackled the Gotland 360 long-distance cycling event for the first time. This is a race with a difference. “It’s not really a race but more of a social event, where participants cycle together and chat as they make their way,” he explains. Taking place on a Saturday and Sunday in September, the race spans 360 km. What is Gotland like for mountainbikers? “I’d say that Gotland is perfect for
long-distance mountainbikers, that is, those looking to cycle along small tracks. On your bike you can get deep into the woods and find places you’d never reach by car, so you can discover a lot you would otherwise have missed.” Navigating across the terrain can be a challenge, which is why David recommends using a guide, but if you really want to travel alone you can rent satnav systems with pre-programmed routes.
PLAN A CYCLING HOLIDAY. Jacob Har-
levi at Gotlands Cykeluthyrning (Bike Hire) advises those considering a cycling holiday to plan their route on
the island in advance. “A lot of people don’t really appreciate how large Gotland is. We normally advise choosing a trail either in the north or south for a one-week trip.” He also recommends not to make the daily distance to long. “People cycle for fun and to discover things along their route, not to race to the finish. The average distance covered at a gentle pace is around 20 km per hour. After an hour, take a break for a snack or a swim (or both). Make sure you schedule snack breaks on your route, or bring some food along and have a picnic in the great outdoors. When buying things on the island it’s best to carry cash, as not everywhere accepts plastic, and bear in mind that mobile phone coverage can be unreliable far out on the island, so take a physical map or one you downloaded earlier. And for the best tips, ask the local residents, as no one knows the surroundings the way they do!”
EXPERIENCES GOTLAND ACTIVE organises self-guided tours including bike, equipment and map containing a cycle route. Your hotels and B&Bs are booked in advance and your luggage is transported for you so you can enjoy the cycling.
IF YOU WANT to organise things yourself, visit Gotlands Cykeluthyrning (Bike Hire) in Visby where you can rent bikes, carts and tents, etc. Maps are also provided, both in paper and digital format. 56
The coastline through Kettelviken to Hoburgen is one of many beautiful roads on the island.

Gotland boasts six scenic golf courses offering a variety of challenges. Play a links and a parkland course one day, and a forest and heathland venue the next. The island’s courses are playable from early spring to late autumn.
Visby GK Situated on Kronholmen, Visby Golf Club is one of the best and most picturesque golfing venues in Sweden. The course is also ranked in the top 25 in continental Europe. Gotska GK Gotska Golf Club is situated by Visby Airport, just a couple of kilometres north of the city centre. gotland Art Week The inaugural Gotland Art Week was held last year. Over an eventful week in August, visitors enjoyed and took part in art, design, fashion, photography, theatre and dance. The event takes place across the whole island, with Visby as a natural hub. “We exceeded all expectations with interest, which feels just great. One of our targets was to stage 20 events, and we ended up at 160, while another was to attract 2,000 visitors in total. We got just over 11,000,” explains Björn Pettersson, the week’s driving force. This year’s culture week takes place from 21 to 28 August.

Crimetime Crime time Gotland, the crime genre festival, started in 2015 and was an instant hit. The planning of this year’s event is in full swing. From 17 to 20 August, you can meet prominent authors from Sweden and overseas such as Peter Robinson and Camilla Läckberg as well as attend writing classes, murder mystery tours and much more. The popularity of crime fiction among the public is greater than ever. Four-million detective novels are sold in Sweden every year, with new authors constantly breaking through. “Crimetime Gotland was founded in response to a desire on the part of both authors and publishers to create a larger meeting place for devotees of the thriller genre. Gotland and Visby provide the perfect setting, with an exciting history and a number of crime fiction writers who both live on the island and set their stories here. Håkan Nesser, Anna Jansson, Mari Jungstedt and Håkan Östlundh feature among the authors heavily involved in Crimetime,” explains Carina Nunstedt, festival manager with responsibility for the programme. Crimetime Gotland takes place over four days in week 33, from 17 to 20 August. Last
Carina Nunstedt
year over 50 authors and well-known moderators took part, and similar numbers are expected this year. What was most popular in 2015? “The writing classes, murder mystery tours and excursions with famous authors sold out swiftly. We also arranged a crime scene investigation with experienced forensic analysts which was a big hit.” Who is Crimetime Gotland aimed at? “Anyone with a passion for the crime and thriller genre in books and films. There was a lot of interest in the festival from the start. Around 13,000 visitors attended seminars and we sold 2,500 festival passes. In addition, hundreds of children and their parents visited the family stage in Almedalen free of charge.” 63
WANT TO KNOW MORE? The international Crimetime Gotland festival takes place from 17 to 20 August (week 33) in Visby. The event features a mix of face-to-face meetings with authors, writing classes, dinners, excursions, murder mystery tours and a large family stage. Peter Robinson, Camilla Läckberg, Johan Theorin and around 20 other authors have already confirmed their participation. Read more and buy a festival pass at crimetimegotland.se.

When taking a cruise, it can be time-consuming to research the best destinations and the best ways to travel around the places you visit. Gotland Excursion does the hard work for you, specialising in solutions for cruise guests and other seaborne tourists as well as conference guests. “Every year, around 60,000 people take cruises to Gotland. We offer package trips and can even tailor programmes to people’s specific needs,” explains Susanne Samuelsson at Gotland Excursion.
THE APPEAL OF VISBY. On reaching Visby harbour, representatives from Gotland Excursion will greet the group, with a guide providing assistance. There are a range of activities to choose from, including guided tours on foot, by bike and by bus. A very popular choice is the Visby tour, where visitors are guided around the Medieval city, stopping at the Botanical garden and Visby Cathedral before moving on to Högklint, with wonderful views over Visby and the sea. Other tours include Fårö (in Bergman’s footsteps), flavours of Gotland and the Gotland countryside.
“Gotland Excursion specialises in accommodating cruise guests”
NEW CRUISE QUAY IN 2018. At present, Visby harbour does
not have the capacity to accommodate large cruise vessels, which currently drop anchor outside the town and ferry in passengers in small boats. However, by 2018, construction of a new cruise quay is expected to be complete. Situated to the south of the existing harbour, the quay will be able to berth two 340-metre vessels simultaneously, with the number of cruise guests expected to rise to 150,000 within a few years, and up to 250,000 long term. “We’re looking forward to the completion of the new cruise quay, which will enable ships to berth at the harbour. This means we can receive more guests, something we’re already working hard on preparing for, including provision of more activities,” adds Samuelsson.

With its continental spirit and nature and landscape, featuring sea stacks, sandy beaches and windswept pine trees, Gotland stands apart from the rest of Sweden in many ways. Many describe feeling far further away from the mainland than the 35 minute plane trip or three-hour ferry crossing. At the same time, everything on Gotland is close to hand, including venues for activities and entertainment, whether you’re looking to arrange a dinner in a 13th century ruin, a lecture in fully equipped conference facilities or a social event on the shore. And if you’re looking for action there’s a wide range of adventure activities to suit all tastes, including Gutnish games, climbing and bathing in a hot tub. On the island there are a range of providers who can tailor evening meals, accommodation and activities to your specific requirements, catering for small parties and large conferences alike.

autumn Beyond the summer months, the island is transformed, with the air becoming fresher, the sea more powerful and the landscape more distinctive. Take a walk along the coast and boost your reserves of vigour and energy, with everyday stress a distant memory. Many people experience a feeling of calm the moment they set foot on the island, the contentment of total relaxation without demands and obligations. According to many islanders, autumn is the best time to be on Gotland. Heated up over the summer, the sea creates a warm, mild climate, and it’s not unusual to see people swimming in late September and playing golf in November. With the city walls sheltering the centre of Visby from chilly winds, you can lounge in open-air cafés or stroll along the town’s alleys that little bit longer. Gold and red hues spread across the countryside and the forests are filled with mushrooms and truffles. Many of the island’s popular restaurants stay open late into the autumn, the majority in Visby are open all year round.

sport fishing
Gotland has something to offer fishing enthusiasts all year round, but it’s not until the last bather leaves the beach that the real adventure begins. Jump into your waders, sharpen your hooks and get ready to fish for the island’s delights.
With beaches several kilometres long, Gotland’s extensive coastline offers practically unrestricted* fishing. It’s easy to find a spot where you can enjoy the fresh air, surging sea swell and, with a little luck, hook a large, shiny, silver sea
trout. The wild, well-grown sea trout is the major reason why sport fishing enthusiasts from all corners of the world flock to Gotland to go fishing. What really distinguishes the trout around the island is that they’re a natural population, as opposed to the farmed fish in so many other places. Sport fishing is a popular pastime, and whether you’re a beginner or an angling devotee, Gotland offers a host of new experiences and opportunities to learn. In addition to sea trout, there are also large numbers of perch, pike, cod and flounder along the Gotland coastline. If you don’t have your own fishing gear, there are several providers on the island who can supply everything you need and advise you on prevailing conditions. To get the most out of your visit, we recommend engaging a guide to join you and take you to the best spots.
*Information on current closed areas and closure times can be found at www.lansstyrelsen.se/gotland

SUSTAINABLE FISHING To safeguard the island’s population of wild sea trout for forthcoming generations, sport fishermen are requested to Catch & Release. As a general rule, a maximum catch of one trout per fisherman per day is recommended on Gotland, with all pike caught in seawater to be thrown back.
visby map app A newly launched app which guides you around Visby.
Guide yourself through the history of Visby, see the sights, and easily locate the nearest toilet, WiFi signal or bathing area. “While exploring the city you can enjoy stories about everything from ruins and the city walls to historical buildings,” explains Björn Wallenström from Gotlands Cykeluthyrning (Bike Hire), who devised the app.

personal tips
In an age where virtually everything can be found online or in different types of brochures, we’ve begun to value personal tips more and more. This has been noted by the Gotland official visitors bureau. “Information is everywhere, but sometimes there is too much of it. It’s great to meet someone face to face and get advice which is just right for me. This is something we’re seeing more and more of, with many visitors requesting personal advice or a little extra assistance,” explains Daniel Eriksson at the official visitors bureau. Our services are available for all visitors, and whether it’s your first time on the island or if you’ve been here many times before, we try to offer useful advice,” he adds. Visit the official visitors bureau in Donnerska huset (the Donner House) in Visby, Donners Plats 1. 78
