FALLING IN LOVE

After a few years as a new inhabitant of Gotland, I can now reminisce about my first encounter with this beautiful island and my relationship with it. I have vivid memories of my first trip here, in early summer when everything was in bloom. In the middle of Visby, it was obvious that something was happening. Preparations for the summer were underway, for all the visitors that were expected to the island. Work was being carried out everywhere, and I was met by expectant glances and smiles. The wonderful atmosphere was practically tangible. After a few days in Visby I went north, and started my first relationship with rural Gotland. I fell in love with the contrasts that Gotland offered: the beautiful sandy beaches of Fårö, nature’s creativity at Langhammar, the exposed and naked nature of Bungenäs and the taste of my first fresh flounder at the harbour restaurant in Herrvik. As a habitual urbanite, I was worried that I would miss my former life in Stockholm. But I have realized that my life is richer, Gotland can give me everything I need and more besides. I love the spring, when I can go to the nearest farm shop and buy fresh asparagus by putting money in a rusty tin; the summer, when the atmosphere and the mix of people create a wonderfully continental feeling. But my favourite season is the autumn, when I can stroll around Visby and stop at one of the restaurants for some hot soup, where the owner comes over to say hello and chat for a while – because there’s time. Not everything needs to be as fast as it was in my previous hometown. Here, there’s time for each other. And when the trip to the capital take only three hours by ferry or 35 minutes by air, I really believe I have the best of both worlds.

Just like an island paradise, on Gotland you’re never far from a velvety beach. But the 800 km of coastline offers so much more than this – amazing cliffs, beautiful pebbly beaches and lagoons of glimmering green water. Or why not find your very own secret bathing spot? Ljugarn strand This kilometre-long sandy beach is next to the beautiful village of Ljugarn, which has restaurants and other facilities. Just north of the beach is the old fishing community of Vitvärs, followed by one of Gotland’s most impressive rauk areas, Folhammar.
Smöjen Its unique landscape makes Smöjen an exciting bathing spot. You can either swim at the beach or in the crystal clear water of the quarry. The high cliffs of the limestone quarry and the barren surroundings provide an atmosphere of industrial romanticism.
Ihreviken Windsurfers and families love this sandy beach. There is a beach restaurant from where you can enjoy the sunset after a long day in the sun. There is a range of accommodation available in the area.
16
16
Norsta Auren The sand is white, in soft rolling dunes. The velvety beach is a little off the beaten track and so far not many tourists have found their way here. It’s one of Gotland’s best beaches, with a real sense of the tropics.
Tingstäde träsk The “swamp”, which is actually a shallow lake, has jetties, bathing and sandy and grassy beaches. Family-friendly bathing that’s perfect if you want to avoid getting sand in your picnic. There is a café here in the summer and in the winter it’s a great place for skating.
Nisseviken This sandy beach is said to have Gotland’s warmest water. It has all the facilities you need – food outlets, grassy areas and a long jetty. In other words, Nisseviken is the perfect place for families.

BEACHES & BATHING
sudersand You can find many wonderful beaches on Fårö. One of these is Sudersand, which is several kilometres long. The velvety white sand and the Mediterranean-green water are reminiscent of the west coast of France. The beach has long shallows and there are cabins, campsites and restaurants in the area. The beach restaurant also has a heated pool for those who’d prefer that. A holiday paradise for everyone who wants the best and wants it easily accessible.
About Sudersand Olof Palme and his family spent 30 years of summer holidays at Sudersand. A group of sculptures has been erected in his honour.

Tofta Tofta is hot hot hot in the middle of summer. The beach soaks up the sunshine, as do the delightful crowds of cheerful people that fill the area. At Tofta it’s easy to let yourself be absorbed into the great atmosphere. After a long day on the beach, you can dance the night away at the “après beach”, or take a magical sunset stroll at the water’s edge, drink in the social scene and enjoy the beautiful landscape. There is accommodation to suit every age and budget, a variety that also contributes to the fantastically diverse range of people found here. Some visitors sleep in a two-man tent with a sea view and others stay in charming cabins, at B&Bs or high class hotels. Taking your holiday home with you, as a campervan or caravan, is also popular. The people who live and work at Tofta’s beach love the summer and the visitors. There are careful preparations throughout the year to provide for the hundreds of thousands of guests that visit Tofta in the summer. Whether you come to Tofta for a day, a week or stay for the whole summer, it’s a paradise for everyone.

A TASTE OF GOTLAND
“I’m always eager for the new seasons to come. Like the asparagus in the spring, strawberries in the summer and truffles in the autumn.”
locally produced “Gotland is a unique island with a special climate. The alkaline soil gives its sweetness and distinctive character to everything that is grown and bred here. It’s an honour to cook food from locally produced ingredients,” says Fredrik Malmstedt, gastronomic manager for the Nobis Group. Fredrik Malmstedt always has lots to keep him occupied. He used to be on the Swedish cookery team and is responsible for the award-winning 50 Kvadrat restaurant, Köttbutiken in Visby and, more recently, Fabriken Furillen. He grew up in a culinary family. With a father who was a hunter, there was always elk meat in the freezer and all the food was cooked from raw ingredients, forming Fredrik’s career choice. He went to catering college and then worked as a chef at Lindsay House in London, Charlie Trotter in Chicago and Vassa Eggen in Stockholm. “Using the right ingredients and following the seasons is the most important thing in my
cookery. Looking after our inheritance and Swedish agriculture is my obligation. I also like storytelling in my job. I want to be able to tell the guests about the farm the food comes from. How the farmer has grown the fresh vegetables and where the animals grazed,” says Fredrik and continues. “Behind each ingredient from Gotland there is love and real people. This care, along with the limerich soil, is part of almost everything that comes from the island.” The same applies to the wonderful meat from Gotland. The animals graze along the beaches. They eat thyme, rosemary and rocket, which is reflected in the flavours of the food. Page 22
Tips from the tourist office
There’s an incredible number of farm shops on Gotland where you can buy your own little piece of Gotland; fresh, natural and straight from the producer.
FRIED FLOUNDER WITH BEETROOT AND FRESH HERBS Serves 4 25 small beetroots Salt Thyme Sugar 4 flounders Rapeseed oil and butter for frying Garlic Dill crowns For serving: Beurre noisette 2 lemons Tender beetroot and spinach leaves Herbs, e.g. purslane, heather flowers and watercress Boiled new potatoes
SAFFRON PANCAKE WITH VANILLA CREAM AND DEWBERRIES Serves 4 Pancake: 250 ml rice 1 packet saffron ½ cinnamon stick 1 tbsp cardamom 150 ml cream 150 ml milk 50 ml honey 50 ml syrup 3 eggs 4 tbsp sugar 2 tbsp cognac Dewberries: 100 g dewberries (or blackberries, raspberries or other berries) 50 g icing sugar Vanilla cream: 150 ml whipping cream ½ vanilla pod Sugar
Pancake: Boil the rice to make rice pudding. Follow the instructions on the package and cook it with the saffron, cinnamon and cardamom. Gently wisp the cream, milk, honey, syrup and eggs. Mix it with the rice when it’s cooled slightly. Flavour with sugar and cognac. Bake in a tin in the oven until set at 175°C, around 30 minutes. Dewberries: Sprinkle a little icing sugar over the berries and leave at room temperature for an hour before serving. Vanilla cream: Whip the cream with the contents of half a vanilla pod, add sugar to taste.
Top and tail the beetroot, use the fresh leaves in a salad. Boil the beetroot in salted water with thyme and sugar. Peel them under running water when they’re cooked. Remove the flounders’ heads and then rinse. Dry them off and fry them in a hot pan with oil, finishing off with a large knob of butter. Add some garlic, thyme and dill crowns to the pan when you fry the fish. Fry the fish well. Toss the beets in the hot beurre noisette. Serve the flounder with lemon, salad greens, herbs, beurre noisette and new potatoes.

THE 100-YEAR-OLD’S FATHER FOUND his HOME Jonas Jonasson, one of Sweden’s most renowned, prize-winning authors, lives in rural Gotland. Here, close to the sea, he enjoys feeding the hens, playing with his son and just being. Jonas Jonasson took the world by storm with The Hundred-year-old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. He’s now in the news with his second book, The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden. Despite his success, Jonas prefers being at home on Gotland, going for walks and playing with his son, rather than attending premieres in Stockholm. “I kept myself to myself before this, and it’s the same now. In principle I’ve nothing against going to glitzy premieres in Stockholm, but I just haven’t said yes to any,” says Jonas.
I reappeared as something else.”
You have gone from a burned-out journalist to worldfamous author. Tell us about your personal journey over the last few years? “A lot of life is coincidence. If I hadn’t hit the wall like I did, I wouldn’t have changed my life and the 100-year-old book would perhaps never have been finished. My motivation for finishing the book was that I needed a new identity; my old life ended so suddenly. You could say that I stepped out of my window and disappeared, then
Which places on the island inspire your writing? “Many places inspire me, such as Östergarnslandet, Sudret and Fårö. The different landscapes have different temperaments. And then the world’s most beautiful city, Visby, on top of that. I have a writing den close to my home in Hogrän, that’s my starting point. But I move around a bit to change atmosphere and sometimes sit at the Norrgatt pastry shop and Almedal’s library. Maybe I’ll find a new place for book number three?”
Are you full of new book ideas, or do you need to think of something now? “I have a number of things to be going on with from my first two books. But first I’m going to enjoy Gotland for a while. It’s easy to do!” Why did you choose to move to Gotland? “Well, where should I move to? Why not here – Sweden’s sunniest, safest, prettiest and most family-friendly place?”

Jonasson in brief Jonas and his son have lived in Hogrän, on Gotland, for the last few years. Jonas is a journalist and prize-winning author. He’s now in the news with The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden. Previously he has written The Hundred-year-old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, which has now been made into a film.
HISTORY
BATTLING GUTES AND HIDdEN TREASURES Gotland is an interesting island with many fascinating stories. Some are true, others aren’t. Here are two of the most attention-grabbing. Read on and be amazed – or horrified. THE BATTLE AT THE WALL When Danish forces, led by Valdemar Atterdag, sailed east in the summer of 1361, the Swedish King, Magnus Eriksson, knew that Gotland was at risk. That year he had issued a warning letter to the citizens of Visby, encouraging them to keep watch. Gotland’s inhabitants did their best to prepare. On the farms, at best, the farmer could produce grandfather’s old iron sword and plated shirt. At worst, a solid cudgel had to do. Early one July morning, the men on Stora Karlsö sighted around thirty ships – the Danes had arrived. News of the attack rapidly spread across the island and armed Gutes of all ages prepared to fight. Life, honour and freedom were at stake. Usually, Gotland’s farmers and the citizens of Visby didn’t particularly get along, but the threat helped them to cooperate; Visby could not withstand Valdemar’s forces without help, so the farmers put the past behind them and agreed to help. The Danes headed for the city, as did the farmers.
The city’s residents had decided that the city gates should remain closed. A battle in the city, among women and children, could only end in catastrophe. Valdemar’s forces started the battle with a flurry of crossbow arrows that drilled through the farmers’ vests. Shortly after this, they started to attack. The battlefield was a maelstrom of sweaty, breathless, screaming men. The Gutes had no chance. Blood flowed, bone was crushed and limbs separated from bodies. There was no mercy. Valdemar’s men continued to frenziedly beat those who’d already fallen. Visby’s gates remained closed and the farmers were left to their fate. They hammered on the south and east gates in vain; a decision was a decision. The bloodbath could not continue in the city. When the battle was over, 1800 Gutes were dead; the greatest tragedy to affect the island. Visby surrendered, the gates were opened and the population was forced to recognise Valdemar as Gotland’s new ruler.
Page 36
The legend of the maiden’s tower Legend has it that it was Valdemar’s Gotland mistress that opened Visby’s gates to the Danes. For her treachery, she was bricked up alive in the tower on Strandpromenaden, which is now known as “Jungfrutornet” – the maiden’s tower.

STAVAR’S TREASURE For several hundred years, a story spread on Gotland about a buried treasure – lots and lots of silver coins. It was said that the treasure was somewhere in the parish of Burs, and that a rich man called Stavar had hidden it from the Norwegian Vikings who had come to raid the island. It was long thought that it didn’t exist and was just a made-up story. In the spring of 1975, a group of high school students from Högby school in Hemse were doing a project; practical work in ancient skills was to help them find out about how people lived and worked in the Iron and Bronze ages. At the end of the project the pupils went to a forest glade just above Bandlundviken in Burs, where they were to stay overnight and live like Iron Age people, with everything that entailed. The following day, the pupils brought out gifts to the gods – sacrifices such as flowers, clay pots and smoked perch. Requests for good harvests and suc-
cessful hunts were made. When the final sacrifice was made, the pupils asked for money in return. Later the same day, just a few metres from the sacrificial stone, they found a treasure from the 900s. The treasure was 1500 silver coins. It can’t be determined whether it was Stavar who buried the silver coins, but one thing is certain – the treasure was anything but a myth.
What happened next? After the find, there was a dream of building an Iron Age village close to where Stavar’s treasure was found. Led by teachers Harriet Löwenhielm and Pär-Gunnar Werkelin, this dream came true. The village is called Stavgard, and is open to the public throughout the summer.

MYTHS
THE ISLAND OF RESTLESS SOULS If you listen carefully, you can hear the winds of history across Gotland’s vast landscapes and endless beaches. Perhaps they make us see ghosts in old empty houses? Or are there spirits that never leave Gotland? WATCH OUT FOR BYSEN IN THE FOREST
DARE YOU WATCH THE MARTEBO LIGHT?
Bysen is a supernatural being who is said to entice people into getting lost in the forest. He makes life difficult for foresters and other people who get in his way. Sometimes he is dressed in grey with a pointed hat, and sometimes he has an axe. If Bysen gets you lost, you should turn your jumper inside-out to break the spell, so you can find your way home.
The light in Martebo marsh has been known about since the early 1900s. It is described as a bright light that appears to hover along the road. Many stories are told about the light. The best known is probably that of a father called Knut Stares. He has never found peace, so instead he walks in the dark looking for his abducted son.
THE GHOST OF A CHILD-KILLER
Nicolaus Takstein was a terrible man. After murdering the parish priest he was beaten to death in his own home in 1274. It’s said that the blood never disappeared from the walls and that his ghost still walks in the old farm in Lärbro. The farm is now a museum and Takstein’s gravestone can be seen in Lärbro church.
The mediaeval manor of Katthamra gård is in Katthammarsvik, in the parish of Östergarn. Dragging footsteps and thuds have been heard from the top floor. At night the ghost of a young woman has been seen walking around the park with a small child in her arms. The woman is said to be one of the manor’s maids who has come back to look after her unwanted baby, who she murdered and buried.
AN EVIL SPECTRE

Do you want to hear more ghost stories? Ulf Palmenfelt has written a book about Gotland’s haunted places (Spökplatser på Gotland), a collection of hair raising stories from Fårö in the north to Sundre in the south.

A DAY oN NORTHERN GOTLAND In northern Gotland you get the feeling of being in several countries and eras at the same time. See the impressive rauk fields, old fishing communities and bathe at wonderful beaches. Here are tips for some excursions you shouldn’t miss. EXPANSIVE PEBBLED BEACHES
A UNIQUE, WONDERFUL ISLAND
The coast of north-west Gotland, between Kappelshamn and Ar, has billowing kilometre-long pebble beaches. The landscape is tranquil. Walk along the beach and take a break at the little fishing community at Västerviken.
Fårö is a fantastically beautiful, different place, with chalk-white beaches and unusual scenery. Make your first stop the Sylvis Döttrar bakery and buy some of their buns to take to the paradisiacal beaches of Norsta Auren and Ekeviken. From there it’s a short trip to Fårö Lighthouse.
LUNCH IN A FISHING VILLAGE Lergrav is a wonderful area with large rauks. Visit Lergrav Fisk & Café to buy and eat smoked fish; it’s also an organic café with simple dishes and home baked goods.
INDUSTRIAL ROMANTICISM ON FURILLEN The peninsula was once a military area and was long closed to the public. The dramatic, barren scenery has inspired the many fashion shoots done here. There is an old factory building on Furillen that is now a modern design hotel with a gourmet restaurant.
IMPRESSIVE RAUKS The Digerhuvud Nature Reserve has Sweden’s largest continuous area of rauks. It has spectacular views across the sea and hundreds of limestone rauks. Rauks are the remains of the ancient reefs that are the basis for Gotland today.
THE GAMLA HAMN NATURE RESERVE If you want to see one of Gotland’s most famous rauks, such as the Kaffepannan (coffee pot) or Hunden (dog), go to Gamla Hamn Nature Reserve. On the way home, stop by Kutens and enjoy delicious French crêpes to the swing playing on the American juke box.

MY GOTLAND
Folhammar, north-east of Ljugarn.
WINTER MAINLANDER Gotland has been part of Urban Hilding’s life since he was a child. Urban, managing director of the IUM media agency, now takes his family to his own limestone house on Ljugarn, summer and winter. When they were young, Urban and his friends went to Gotland in the summers, exploring the island’s winding roads on their motorbikes. When Urban then met his partner, they spent their first summers together in the same way. “On Gotland you don’t need to decide where to go, you just go. You always get somewhere, to hidden places or small communities you’ve never been before,” says Urban. After a few summers on the motorbike, Urban and his partner rented their first house on the island. “We reached a point when we needed more than our rucksacks and our motorbikes. And when the first baby came, we bought an old limestone house on Ljugarn, eastern Gotland. Since then it’s been our refuge, summer and winter. We’re a stone’s
throw from the sea and it has everything you could want: a small marina, a wonderful sandy beach, a shop, several restaurants and a great bakery and café.” Urban also tells us about the magical rauk field, Folhammar, close to their home. “We go there to have a barbecue, watch the sea and let the children play by the rauks.” But the Hilding family are almost most fond of Gotland in the autumn and winter, and always spend Christmas and New Year on the island, as well as the first of Advent, when they go to the Yule market in Bläse, go skating and light the fire. “There is a peace on Gotland that I haven’t found anywhere else. I don’t know if it’s because of the sea or the scenery. It helps that Gotlanders are wonderful people too,” says Urban. Page 43

RURAL ACCOMMODATION
GASTRONOMY AND HOSPITALITY IN AN ORGANIC PACKAGE In the 1900s, this turn-of-the-century building in Ronehamn was converted from a trading house to a seaside guest house. Gula Hönan is now a guest house and hostel, as well as innovative gourmet restaurant. The guest house’s conservatory and dining room are busy. The chef and son of the house, Marc Enderborg, has returned to Gotland and now runs Gula Hönan along with his family. He has worked at four-star hotels in Dubai, at Michelin-starred restaurants in London and with celebrity chefs like Marco Pierre White and Michel Roux Jr. Marc and the family aim to fill the beautiful dining room with exquisite aromas to give Gotlanders and other visitors gastronomic experiences in an authentic atmosphere. In the restaurant, everything is produced on a foundation of organic vegetables from the farm garden – locally produced, or “here produced”, as the family say. The meat comes from Gotland’s farms and fish from the fisherman in the harbour when available. Mushrooms and berries are picked
by the family. They are now developing the menus and cuisine. The restaurant will start to focus more on fine dining, with guests choosing from two to six-course menus. Marc says that everyone in the family has an area of responsibility at the guest house. For example, mother Tina-Marie takes care of most things in the leafy garden, while little sister Unn works with the deli and bakery, where you can savour the family’s homemade bread, buns and cakes, or buy homemade cordial and home-grown herbs. “We believe in an overall approach, in the garden and in life in general,” says Marc. “We’re passionate about organic produce and grow most things ourselves. This year we’ve worked a lot in the garden and next year we’re getting pigs.” Page 52
Rock n’ roll on the dock In the summer of 2014 the family will also open a restaurant by Ronehamn’s quay. It will be a little more “rock’n’roll”, offering beer and fish and chips by the sea.

MODERN LUXURY IN ANCIENT SURROUNDINGS The mediaeval Hotel Helgeand is inside Visby’s walls, among winding alleys and climbing roses. Listen to the old stories whispered by the walls and enjoy modern luxury in ancient surroundings. Visby – city of romance and history. The picturesque lanes hide small, charming boutiques and award-winning restaurants that are open yearround. Hotel Helgeand is at the heart of this. The hotel recently acquired new owners, Kjell and Gunilla Sjöberg. They also run Strindbergshotellet in Stockholm, and when they found out that Medeltidshotellet was for sale, it just clicked. They bought it and renamed it Helgeand. The name comes from the neighbouring ruin. “We love Gotland and have strong ties to the island. You get close to people here, they are friendly and make time for each other. We were attracted to its authenticity and the history that is ever-present. This cultural treasure is a gift, and
we will make it even better,” says Kjell Sjöberg with enthusiasm. The area around the hotel is distinctive due to the mediaeval hospital and the Helgeand church ruin. The hotel building itself is preserved in its original condition from the 13th century, with foundations from the 1100s. Stepping inside is like travelling in time. No two rooms are the same, and the muted colours and rustic walls are a fantastic contrast to the modern comforts that welcome the guests. “We still love every day in Visby and the hotel,” says Kjell. “We pick dates in the hotel’s backyard, drink in the atmosphere and listen to the cathedral bells.” Page 54

Wisby strand
16
It’s no surprise that Wisby Strand has been named Scandinavia’s most inspiring meeting place. It has everything you need for a successful conference: bespoke rooms for every meeting, kitchens that produce everything from banquets to individual gourmet experiences, and an impressive location by the sea and the heart of the city. Whether you are organising a conference or an exclusive meeting, we have the right facilities. We offer a congress hall with a capacity of around 1000, plus eight rooms of varied size and exhibition space of 1200 sq. m.
Modern and mediaeval The modern congress hall has all the technology necessary for a successful meeting. As the cherry on top, our neighbours are the unique Kallis “kallbadhus”, the popular beach promenade and the greenery of Almedalen. In addition, the mediaeval city and its fascinating ruins, winding cobbled streets and church bells are just a stone’s throw away.
Gourmet and gourmand We have seasoned our dishes with a large helping of quality, so we can serve delicious conference lunches for 1000 participants and excellent dinners for small groups. Whether you want brunch, a buffet or a three-
course dinner, we ensure it’s a culinary experience.
Air and sea The flight from Stockholm to Visby takes just 35 minutes, with several departures every day of the year. There are also flights to Gothenburg, Malmö and Ängelholm several times a week. For an unusual start to your conference, take the ferry from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn. The journey takes about three hours and there are on-board conference rooms for up to 24 people, and exclusive cabins for up to six people.
Luck and expertise At the 2010 TUR exhibition, Wisby Strand was named Scandinavia’s most inspiring meeting place. We’re not sure whether we received this award thanks to our enthusiastic staff, amazing sea view or first-class dining. But we do know that meetings here offer a wealth of experience – and that the sunsets are included in the price.

HISTORIC MEETINGS ALL YEAR ROUND A meeting on Gotland is affecting, creating impressions that stay with participants long after they leave the conference. Gotland has been a place for meetings for centuries. If you had walked along Strandgatan in the 1200s, you would have heard many different languages; people from all around the Baltic gathered here to trade and make agreements. Gotland is now a modern destination, whether for a large congress or a small management meeting, with great capacity and a wide choice of facilities. Event organisers goGotland and Evenemang Gotland provide these services. Just being in a place that dates back to the 1200s is an experience in itself, so locating some meetings in the city’s beautiful ruins is popular with those who visit Visby. If you want to experience more of Gotland you
can take the company on a bike or coach trip. Combined with competing in Gute games, such as Rövkrok and Bleistre, it will be an original cultural experience. In addition to the varied and beautiful surroundings, Gotland is famous for its food. You and your company can make culinary visits to producers and test their creations on site. But the main reason why groups leave our beautiful island happy is probably Gotlandic hospitality. When Carl von Linné visited the island in the 1700s he wrote: It would be difficult to find a fairer, friendlier and more welcoming people in the Nordic countries. And so it is today. The welcome you’ll get on arriving on the island is something you’ll never forget

MY GOTLAND

THE SHEEP FARMER FROM RUTE Sheep farmer Ulla Berglund’s family has lived on Gotland since the 1700s. The island is home to her soul and her history. “I love the light and the landscape of Gotland. It’s like a balm for my soul to walk my dogs across the fields, between the ruins and into the forest. There is a special scent here that can’t be described,” says Ulla, and there is no mistaking her genuine Gotland dialect. Ulla and her husband live on the ancient farm of Risungs gård. It is in Rute, northern Gotland, and produces leather products for clothes and interior design, amongst other things. When Ulla has time, she cards wool to make yarn. But time is hard to find for a farmer, there’s always so much to do. “Around 770 lambs are born every year, and lamb-
ing is a very busy period. The summer is the time for shearing, which the animals enjoy. We make everything from vests to cushions and gloves from the lambskin and sell them in the farm shop.” The couple also have a kennel on the farm. They breed Lagotto Romagnolos, which can be trained to be excellent truffle hunters. “In the autumn we organise truffle hunts for anyone who want to join in. We are out in the forest for a few hours and the dogs always find truffles. When we come home we eat bread with truffle butter and talk about recipes and what happened during the day. Then we usually visit to the farm shop.”
Ulla Berglund in brief Words of wisdom: “Most things work out if you take it easy and think about it.” Favourite place on Gotland: Rute, where we live. It has the sea, forest and fields.
Best food on Gotland: Rute Stenugnsbageri. They have stone baked pizzas with sourdough and local ingredients. They might make a truffle pizza next year.

Truffles in brief A truffle is an unusual underground fungus that grows in symbiosis with trees, particularly oak and hazel.
