Dive into the wonderful waters of Blekinge
B
lekinge is in many ways the ultimate province. If this is your first visit to Blekinge, we can only congratulate you on your good taste. To everyone else – we wish you a warm welcome back! There is a reason why our slogan is “Blekinge – wonderful waters”. Water is central to our landscape – whether brackish, fresh, wild or calm. There is the vast and leafy archipelago, which is actually one of Northern Europe’s largest, with its collection of picturesque islands, islets and skerries. Hop on a boat and explore the islands at your own pace and be suffused with tranquillity and the fresh sea breeze. Further inland, surrounded by beautiful lush greenery, you will find plenty of beautiful lakes and rivers, with Mörrumsån (the Mörrum River) being the crowning glory, at least for fishing enthusiasts. The famous salmon fishing attracts tens of thousands of expectant anglers from every corner of the world and is one of Blekinge’s biggest tourist attractions. BUT BLEKINGE OFFERS much more than that. Our small size is one of the things that makes the province so great. Just forty kilometres from north to south and one hundred and ten from east to west, you never have far to go to enjoy exciting excursions, action-packed activities or cosy little towns. That quaint,
little farm shop, the interesting museum or the golf course’s inviting greens is never more than a short drive away. Unless of course you leave your car behind. Because two excellent ways to experience our beautiful surroundings are on foot or by bike on any of the trails that criss-cross the landscape. And why not combine an active holiday with a journey of discovery from the cockpit of a kayak or canoe? BLEKINGE IS A place for both recuperation and invigoration, whether you choose to achieve it through a culinary gourmet tour, a stroll through the World Heritage Site of Karlskrona or in one of the nature reserves – we have over a hundred. Perhaps you would like to go on a safari in the Nordic region’s largest wildlife park, discover action-packed play centres and water parks or enjoy one of our many cultural experiences? In this great little province, almost anything is possible and always near to our wonderful waters. IN THIS MAGAZINE, we have chosen a selection of all the interesting, inspiring and delicious experiences that Blekinge has to offer. We hope it will help you find your own favourite places in Blekinge. Happy reading and welcome to Blekinge! Happy reading! #BLEKINGEUNDERBARAVATTEN | 3

TJÄRÖ – THE ARCHIPELAGIAN IDYLL The Tjärö Nature Reserve is a short boat ride from Järnavik, Karlshamn or Matvik, and offers a fabulous view of the archipelago. The island has a large guest harbour and if you decide to stay overnight you can do so in the charming 18th century cottages. Bring your own food or stop for lunch at the island’s ambitious restaurant before heading out on “Expedition Tjärö”. A jump from the 12-metre Death Rock is without doubt the best way of getting an adrenaline-high here. Around the island there are several jetties for bathing and small bays for families if the cliff feels too scary. Other tranquil alternatives are wandering around in the beautiful leafy forest or enjoying the heat and refreshing dips from the floating sauna. Sitting on the rocks and watching the sunset on the horizon is a summer memory that will stay with you for years to come. HANÖ – A BEAUTIFUL GEM Hanö is another archipelago that is a must-see, 25 minutes by ferry from Nogersund harbour. Here you will find a singular, verdant landscape, with the opportunity to encounter both deer and razorbills, the archipelago's version of the penguin. The unique sand bar, Bönsäcken (The Bean Bag), consists of millions of water-polished stones in constant motion. Legend has it that it was created when a lonely female giant, starved of company, wanted to build a stone bridge to the mainland. This is just one of the legends about Hanö. If you explore the island’s stone boulders and caves, you will also encounter the Dragon Mark, which is said to have been created when a dragon, blinded by the lighthouse’s bright light, crashed into the rock face. TORHAMN – THE GATEWAY TO THE ARCHIPELAGO Torhamn, in Blekinge’s and Sweden’s south-eastern corner, is the gateway to the archipelago. From the harbour, it is easy to get out to a string of islands, either by private boat or on one of Skärgårdstrafiken’s boats – the public transport company that operates in the archipelago. If you plan a visit for the first Saturday in July, you will be able to enjoy Torhamn market. The annual market is a bit like Torhamn’s own national day, which attracts residents, tourists and people returning home. For history buffs, there is Hästhallen, Blekinge’s largest collection of rock carvings from the Bronze Age. You can also rent a bike and travel through open countryside and lush forests, such as the coastal road between Torhamn and Kristianopel. Visit one of the farm shops along the coast and buy some Olsäng asparagus and other fresh vegetables, home-made jams or pottery. A hot tip is to visit Café Måsen to enjoy a classic herring sandwich from Blekinge. ILLUSTRIOUS ASPÖ In Karlskrona, you can take the ferry to Aspö
New for this year is that our entire archipelago is interconnected
free of charge. The journey takes just 25 minutes. If you visit the island in July, do not miss the popular culture tour. This public celebration gathers local and invited artists as well as hosting theatrical and musical events. A considerably more permanent destination is the magnificent castle Drottningsskär, which dates back to the 17th century, the period of Swedish empire. The island is perfect for hiking and cycling tours, and it is also possible to rent horses. The island also boasts a lookout point that offers spectacular views. In the five-storey and 20-metre high Lotstornet (Pilot’s Tower) you will have a marvellous panoramic view. And why not take the opportunity to spend the night in the tower and wake up to one of Blekinge’s most beautiful vistas. CAR-FREE KARÖN Just a five-minute journey on the boat Karöline from Ekenäs will take you to the car-free island of Karön. The island is one of the largest in the Ronneby archipelago, and boasts holiday cottages, a restaurant and beautiful sandy beaches. The restaurant is one of the oldest in Blekinge, and you can enjoy delicacies from the sea and from the larders of local producers. n
ISLAND HOPPING IN THE ARCHIPELAGO New for this year is that our entire archipelago is interconnected. You can now travel with Skärgårdstrafiken from Karlskrona for example, via Ronneby and onwards to Tjärö and Karlshamn. For more information on routes and timetables, visit blekingetrafiken.se.

everything for the nature-lover The undulating greenery is surrounded by hundreds of lakes and an abundance of wildlife. It is easy to feel at ease in the lake land of Blekinge. Experience Sweden’s southernmost lake district, on your own terms.

ITALIAN ICE-CREAM IN VILSHULT Did you know that the small town of Vilshult is home to a producer of genuine Italian ice-cream? Holje Glassfabrik makes creamy gelato that is more reminiscent of the Amalfi Coast than Olofström. Their selection includes all the classic flavours, and some others that are more unique. How about ice-cream that tastes like the classic Swedish princess cake?
D
o you want the perfect start to your stay in Olofström? Then you should begin in the nature reserve by Lake Halen. Take a stroll to the water’s edge where the canoe rental is located, and paddle out onto the shimmering lake. Lake Halen is connected to other nearby lakes, inviting you to spend the entire day canoeing. It is a magical feeling to propel yourself across the lake under your own steam and gaze across the ancient forest. Make sure to pack your fishing rod and try your luck. Landlubbers in your party will perhaps appreciate the Rödhult trail more than canoeing. The hike takes you through a vast beech forest that was the stomping ground of the 17th century pro-Danish partisans, “Snapphanarna”. They may be long gone,
but the old trees fire the imagination and it is easy to let your thoughts wander. A tip for anyone strolling among the beech trees without a picnic basket is to visit Jämshögs Gästgivaregård (only Friday lunch or pre-booked groups). Enjoy the quiet setting and put your feet up for a while. The menu, with its focus on local produce from Blekinge, varies with the seasons. After a reinvigorating lunch, there is always the opportunity for a round of golf – Boa Olofströms GK (Golf Club) is right nearby. After all, it can feel good to unlace those hiking boots for a couple of hours. BROKAMÅLA GÅRD is located a short distance from Jämshög and is surrounded by as many as 20 lakes. in classic red cottages, with the traditional white corners, of course. Some of the buildings are hundreds of years old and creak in that homely way that only really old buildings do. From the cottage, you have a lovely view of the peaceful landscape and the water. Brokamåla offers relaxing activities such as saunas, heated wooden hot-tubs and drink tastings. But it is not just relaxation that is on offer. There are several activities for those looking for action; a range of exciting fishing and hunting events, horseback riding, clay-pigeon shooting and an adrenaline-filled adventure course for the more daring. IN BJÖRKEFALL, a bit further north towards the border with the province of Småland, we come across Svarta Huset (the Black House). This jet black house is one of the oldest in the area and is markedly different from most other Swedish crofts. Here you will have a pleasant stay in a wonderfully bucolic setting, with a wealth of exciting places only a stone’s throw away. Among them is Röshults Vedugnsbageri where you are greeted by the lovely smell of freshly baked bread. This bakery has adopted the baking methods of old – things are simply allowed to take time, which also tallies well with the gentle pace of the area. Whether you come here to be active or to wind down, there are options aplenty here in Sweden’s southernmost wilderness.n #BLEKINGEUNDERBARAVATTEN | 9
NATURE & WATER
A fun and different way of fishing for pike using special fishing kayaks.
Fishing for all flavors Blekinge is a true fishing paradise. Whether you prefer a fishing-rod on the pier fishing for perch, tackling the world-renowned salmon of Mörrumsån or outsmarting the wily old pike of the archipelago, you can have your fill here. Welcome to explore what is hidden in our wonderful waters. TEXT: Pål Johansson PHOTOGRAPHY: Niklas Kämpargård, Brokamåla Gård & Pike Strike Sweden
M
örrumsån is not only one of Sweden’s, but is also one of the world’s best waters for salmon and trout fishing. Kronolax (salmon) fishing has been organised and popular since the 13th century. The river itself is divided into 32 unique stretches that provide a great variety of fishing. The angling season lasts from March to September and irrespective of the season, the river never fails to deliver on its promise of truly world-class fishing. BUT MÖRRUMSÅN OFFERS more than just fishing. Along the 30km long Laxaleden, that winds its way along the rippling river, you can enjoy both the beautiful surroundings and the local history. There are information boards at regular intervals where you can read about the development of fishing and stories about all the interesting events that have taken place in the area over the centuries.
10 | VISITBLEKINGE.SE
And take the opportunity to download the trail’s own free app ”Vandra i Karlshamn” (Hiking in Karlshamn). The major hub of the area is Laxens Hus (House of Salmon), in the heart of Mörrum just by Kungsforsen. This is where you can buy fishing licences, complement your gear and pick up useful tips and advice before your stay. If you want to learn more about the life of salmon and fishing in the river, you should not miss the excellent exhibition. To get the most out of your visit, you can download the app ”Mörrumsguiden”. AND when your stomach starts rumbling after a day of adventure, we recommend a visit to the Kronolaxen restaurant. Besides MSC labelled fish, they also serve meat and vegetarian dishes – all focused on organic and local produce. Another local delight is Ninas Konditori, where you can enjoy a nice Swedish “fika” and also learn how to
make pralines. The café is run by Nina Johansson, who was one of the participants in last year’s edition of the TV programme, Dessertmästarna (the Dessert Masters). There is also unique accommodation in the form of the Mörrum River Hotel. The old smokehouse from the early 20th century is currently a boutique hotel that has preserved much of the old architecture. If we wend our way toward the archipelago, it is another fish that lures us there – the pike. A fun and different way of fishing pike, is with special fishing kayaks. The company, Pike Strike Sweden, offers courses in wade fishing and kayak fishing – two good techniques where you benefit from being able to sneak up on the fish. A GOOD POINT OF DEPARTURE for pike fishing in particular is the archipelago outside Karlskrona. The real advantage here is the relatively shallow waters that the pike takes to, well like, a fish takes to water. Because of this, the area is sometimes referred to as Gäddriket, (Pike’s Realm). For the competitive angler, there will be several opportunities to test your mettle in different competitions. One or the most famous is Blekinge Gäddfestival where last year’s winning fish was as long as 113cm. Another favourite haunt for the angler is Långasjönäs Nature Reserve in Karlshamn municipality. It abounds with activities and it is said that the water of Långasjön is the warmest in all of Blekinge province. At the camp site you can stay the night in anything from no-frills overnight cabins to fully equipped cottages with all the amenities. You choose how you want to fish – the more relaxed option is to buy a cheap fishing rod in the small shop and sit down by the water’s edge. If you want to catch bigger fish, you can rent a boat and head out onto the lake. The nearby Kroksjöarna have been stocked with rainbow trout, and you can rent a boat as well as relax in a wood-fired sauna. n
THE ABU MUSEUM IN SVÄNGSTA Award-winning museum The award-winning Abu Museum in Svängsta is an attraction with an industrial history very closely associated with fishing. On these lovely factory premises you are guided through AB Urfabriken’s journey from taximeter and watch maker to world-leading producer of fishing gear. Take a walk through the old workshops and have a gander at some classic reels. There is also a shop for anyone who needs to upgrade their fishing gear.

THE JOY OF DISCOVERY FOR INQUIRING MINDS Challenge your senses at Kreativum Science Centre in Karlshamn – 2,000 sqm of experiences with more than 170 stations to try your hand at. It houses five different “discovery zones” filled with tricky challenges that will test all your senses. See how fast you can move in complete darkness, experiment with solar and hydropower or study how cosmic radiation affects the earth’s atmosphere. At Kreativum, it is all about curiosity, creativity and discovery. If you are looking for an aha experience, this is the place to visit. EXPLORE AN EXOTIC WORLD Are you curious about hairy spiders, snakes and cotton-top tamarins? Then you should get down to Blekinge Exotiska Värld. You will find around 80 different species from five continents, including meerkats, iguanas and tortoises. If you are lucky, you will arrive at snack time, when the keepers feed the animals. A combination ticket is available that also includes entrance to Kreativum Science Centre in the neighbouring building.
A SAFARI FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Pleasantly situated by the Blekinge archipelago, between Ronneby and Karlshamn, lies Eriksberg Vilt & Natur – one of Europe’s largest wildlife reserves and the largest safari park in the Nordic region. A world of impressive vistas in a unique coastal landscape opens up, characterised by leafy hardwood forests and abundant wildlife. Bringing the family for a safari through the park is like travelling back to another time, far from stress and chores. You will see red and fallow deer, boar, European bison and mouflon sheep in their natural habitat. If you are lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the rare white-tailed eagle. You can either go on the safari in your own car or book a tour with one of Eriksberg’s knowledgeable guides. 14 | VISITBLEKINGE.SE
HIGH-PACED PLAY CENTRE ON BOTH WATER AND LAND Barnens Gård (the Children’s farm) just outside Karlskrona combines the best of two worlds. The water park offers swirling water chutes as well as oases of calm for relaxing in. If you prefer to stay on dry land, you can jump and romp in the playground or try out life on the farm – take a ride on a hay cart and feed the animals. To the east of Barnens Gård, a new attraction opened its doors this year, namely Bollspelsgolf (ballgame golf). You compete in various ballgames using your balancing, bouncing and precision striking skills. Petanque meets handball and darts in an exciting and varied activity for the entire family. If you are curious about Barnens Gård, we recommend the TV series “Linneas sommarland” on Barnkanalen (the Children’s Channel) where we follow seven-year-old Linnéa Alm, daughter of Åsa and Axel who run Barnens Gård. The series provides an insight into life on the farm and what it is like to grow up in a “summer park”.
BODA BORG Feel your heart rate quicken as you and your team take on the challenges. At Boda Borg in Karlskrona, you will have to work together to tackle a number of different quests. The challenges vary in their degree of difficulty and will test both your cooperation and logic, as well as your physical abilities. STORLEKPLATSEN If you and your children are passing Olofström this summer, a visit to Storlekplatsen is a firm favourite. Here you can swing, climb the spider's web, and ride the thrilling cable car. Or how about exploring Trollstigen (the Troll Trail) and visiting the many trolls who live in the dwellings along the trail? GREVAGRUNDET Grevagrundet, Blekinge Museum’s playground, is one of Karlskrona’s most popular playgrounds. Look after Hilla, the wooden horse, sail the rowing boat called Knut or try to walk on stilts. The park’s archipelagian theme in combination with the historic setting is guaranteed to spark your imagination and lead to plenty of exciting adventures. BUSFABRIKEN (THE FUN FACTORY) Is it wet, grey and dull outside? Then bring the whole family on an unforgettable adventure to Blekinge’s largest indoor play centre! At Busfabriken in Karlskrona, you can go wild in the jungle, hurtle down breath-taking slides and go crazy in the bouncy castle. When you need to replenish your energy reserves, you can relax in the restaurant.
IDYLLIC BEACHES When the heat of summer makes itself felt and you feel the urge to go swimming, Blekinge is truly the place to be. Pick and choose from shallow sandy beaches, cliffs for diving and beautiful lakes. The Stumholmen bathing area in Karlskrona offers a centrally located beach with a diving tower, very popular with older children. The Kollevik bathing area in Vägga outside Karlshamn is another good option. Choose between the cliffs and the beach or why not the heated open-air pool. For younger children, the Saxemara bathing area in Ronneby offers a family-friendly beach with an adjacent jetty. Additional favourites can be found in Sölvesborg municipality – white sandy beaches at Listerlandet and the Tredenborg bathing area with a beach as well as a jetty. DISCOVER BLEKINGE ON FOOT Pack your rucksack and bring the family on a hike along one of Blekinge’s many hiking trails. Tjurkö is home to a hiking trail of just 1.5 kilometres – perfect for smaller feet and shorter legs. Walk along the old quarry and learn about the cultural heritage from the heyday of stonemasonry. Round it off with a dip in the water at the beach. If you want to stroll along the magnificent Mörrumsån, there is Laxaleden, a strikingly beautiful, 30-kilometre hiking trail that ends by the sea in Elleholm. n

Ronneby Brunnsbad is a water park for the entire family. They have water chutes such as the Magic-Hole and Aqua-Catch, playground sculptures and lovely heated pools.
onneby’s position in history as a place for recreation can be traced all the way back to the early 1700s, when the first iron-rich spring was discovered. There is still a lovely calm quality to this town that is particularly evident in Brunnsparken, which has been named one of Sweden’s, as well as Europe’s, most beautiful parks. Spread a blanket on the grass, open your picnic basket and tuck in. Enjoy good food, beautiful flower arrangements and perhaps some lovely company. If there is anyone with a competitive mindset in your party, you can challenge each other to a game of tennis or mini golf. If you prefer not to compete, it is very rewarding just to take a leisurely stroll and appreciate the setting – the greenery, the lovely old wooden buildings and the stately pavilion. Some of the buildings house the small hotel, FloraViola, with charmingly decorated and inviting rooms that bring to mind the heydays of this spa town. The hotel is run by Café Mandeltårtan, recommended by the White Guide, which is located nearby on the other side of the Ronneby River. When you step through the doors to the café’s conservatory, it feels a little like entering the home of a style-conscious grandmother. It is, in short, the perfect place to enjoy a cup of hot coffee, something freshly baked or some ice-cream from the local producer. AT THE CENTRE OF BRUNNSPARKEN, you will find Naturum, which is well worth a visit. They organise interesting exhibitions and lectures on Blekinge's cultural history, tourist attractions and countryside. For the youngest family members, there is the popular ”Labbet” (the Lab), where you can examine live fish and bugs. And if they have ants in their pants, there
is a water park just a hop and a jump from Naturum. Brunnsbadet offers everything from swimming pools for those who want to get a few laps in to paddling pools for children and for the more daring, the gigantic Magic Hole chute. The chute is an impressive 93 metres in length and the dizzying ride will definitely give you a thrill. IF YOU WANT TO AVOID all the excitement and instead experience total harmony, there are of course many options in the illustrious spa town and southern Sweden’s largest resort – Ronneby Brunn. The spa offers a number of different treatments that will wash away your stress. You can treat yourself to a relaxing massage or visit the pool house, where the water is always a comforting 34 degrees Celsius. For those who prefer to stay active during their holiday, there are numerous activities to participate in, both in the pool and on dry land. The venue also has a free children’s club with many activities for the youngest members of the family. Throughout the year, Ronneby Brunn also arranges shows and concerts featuring well-known artists and musicians. In 2018, Ronnneby Brunn will host events such as the Swedish Chess Championships, the Swedish Dog Championships and the Casting World Championships. n OTHER RONNEBY TIPS Bergslagen. The town’s oldest quarter that survived the town fires and kept its medieval charm. Along the cobbled streets you will find Kulturcentrum, for example – 1,500 sqm of art exhibitions, concerts and other events. T
he small island of Stumholmen, a short stroll from Karlskrona town centre, has been off-limits for civilians for more than 300 years. Nowadays, the place is open to all and houses one of the county’s most popular tourist attractions, the award-winning Naval Museum. It offers an exciting experience for the whole family and the adventure starts before you have even entered. Because moored right outside the museum are several warships. Many children find it especially thrilling to board the missile boat, Västervik. This was the ship on which the captain of the Russian submarine that ran aground outside Karlskrona in 1981, was interrogated. It is intriguing to consider what was said on that frosty October night, in the midst of the Cold War. ONCE INSIDE THE MUSEUM, you have an opportunity to delve more deeply into life on, as well as below, the surface of the sea. In the Submarine Hall, you can not only watch the submarines, but also experience them with all your senses. The high-technology submarine, Neptun lies next to its more than 110 year old “colleague”, Hajen. Entering the cramped interior of the submarine is an intense experience. Once inside the remarkable vessel, you will get an informative glimpse into a world that for so long was closed to the public. If you prefer to stay on the outside, there are many tricky challenges to tackle for young and old alike. AFTER AN INTENSE and enjoyable tour of the world of submarines, we continue to Dunders Däck. Just as with Neptun and Hajen, this offers opportunities for tricky problem-solving and quizzes. A real children’s favourite is the realistic ship simulator that switches between day, night and different types of weather and climatic conditions. It is actually so real that you may find yourself feeling a little seasick afterwards. A quieter activity than playing captain Haddock is the sailor’s workshop. The children can get busy being creative and the skilled staff are there to help them get started. some energy left after Dunders Däck, you should definitely swing by the bathing area outside the museum. It offers every opportunity to combine learning with just hanging out, and for the bolder among us, there is a diving tower here as well. When the sun has warmed you up after your swim and you are feeling hungry, the Naval Museum’s restaurant, Skeppsgossen, with its large family-friendly buffet, is the ideal stop-over. Besides good food and drink, the restaurant offers their own ice-cream, made inhouse, freshly roasted coffee and frothy beer from their own brewery. This is where you can round off a magical day in the best way possible, with a stunning view of the glimmering sea. Do not forget to visit the Naval Museum gift shop before you leave Stumholmen. They have a wide variety of inspiring books, toys and decorative items – all with a distinct maritime theme. n

Here are six impressive figures about the museum. 55,000 artefacts. 20,000 drawings. 500,000 photographs. 20,000 books. 250 metres of shelves of archived documents. 400,000 visitors each year.

Listerlandet
the culinary and trendy peninsula
More and more people are discovering the Listerlandet peninsula that has become so trendy over the past few years. Are you one of those people who is yet to explore Lister or hear their peculiar dialect in its natural environment? It is about time then. TEXT: Pål Johansson PHOTOGRAPHY: Jennie Bengtsson
RECOMMENDED READING! If you are interested in finding out more about our province and finding additional gems, you should check out Niklas Kämpargård’s inspiring books. Born in Sölvesborg, Niklas is a journalist, author and photographer who has published six books over the years. In “Boken om Blekinge” and “Blekinge mellan himmel och hav” he gives us his impressions of our beautiful surroundings with inspiring photos and enticing texts.

T
here is something very simple and unadulterated about Listerlandet. The landscape of the peninsula is perfect for relaxing walks along one of the trails or sunbathing on its velvety, sandy beaches. Listerlandet is a true paradise for everyone who likes a lazy day by the seaside, and it attracts people from both near and far on beautiful summer days. One gem is the inviting, family-friendly Sandviken beach with its soft sand and crystal clear water. Many people are also drawn to Hälleviks, where you can take a dip in the sea from the jetty or the beach, try out the heated pools or else hurtle down the water chute. If you are curious about the Hällevik camp site, you can listen to their podcast or check out the TV programme “Gone Camping” on TV8, which is filmed at Hällevik. BESIDES SUN, BEACH and picturesque fishing villages, Listerlandet has lately become synonymous with top-grade culinary adventures. People come here to experience culinary delights in a number of trendy restaurant and smokehouses along the coast. There is
something for all tastes and budgets. Down by the charming Hällevik harbour for example, you will find Dagmars Hamnkrog and Hennings Rökeri. In this genial fish restaurant, you can enjoy well-prepared food in a pleasant harbour setting. The restaurant also hosts events like prawns galore and seafood nights, as well as entertainment and dancing on selected Fridays. And in the winter, people get together over local beer. Last year, Bakfickan bar opened – an outdoor bar with beer, drinks and a selection of cold dishes. At the neighbouring establishment, Hennings Rökeri, you can replenish your larder or picnic basket with smoked delicacies, their own pickled herring, salads and freshly baked bread. The smokehouse has been in business since the 1950s and has received several awards for its high-quality fish products. In the adjacent bay, you will find the popular restaurant Direktör Nyfiken, which serves rich fish soups, prawn sandwiches and vegetarian dishes that can be savoured while taking in the beautiful view of the sea. The nearby fishing village of Hörvik in Hanö Bay also offers some gastronomic adventures. At the Kajutan restaurant, you can tuck into freshly caught fish or some other delicious fare while gazing out across the harbour and the waves of the Baltic Sea. Another more modest and affordable option in Hörvik is Fiskerian, tempting you with classic herring sandwiches, soups and other tasty produce from the sea. THERE IS MORE THAN just good food and drink to experience when you go to Listerlandet. One highly acclaimed and popular event is the Hällevik Trad Jazz Festival, which takes place in August every year. This year’s festival, the fifteenth, takes place from August 9-12, and offers rhythmic tunes from more than 20 bands from all over Europe on five different stages. Other popular musical high points during the year include the community singing event at Fiskemuseet (the Fishing Museum) in Hällevik and the opera performances in Hanö bygdegård. You can reach the lovely island of Hanö from Nogersund, the fishing village next to Hällevik. The boat trip only takes 25 minutes. n
OTHER BITS AND BOBS AT LISTERLANDET Listers Huvud Blekinge’s largest nature reserve with virgin hardwood forests, exciting cave systems and traces from the retreat of the Fennoscandian ice sheet. Stiby backe Walk to the summit and enjoy the lovely view of crop fields, lush forests and charming fishing villages. Brygghuset Café & Art in Krokås Family-friendly café that serves divine waffles and a small shop where they sell jewellery of their own manufacture as well as Mexican handicraft. Lörby Gårdsbutik Family farm where they sell everything from locally produced greens and root vegetables to ice-cream.

Welcome to Blekinge’s pantry Text: Fridah Jönsson
When you are out on the roads of Blekinge, you are rarely more than a quick detour away from a charming farm shop. There is a wealth of tasty products, made from local produce and with a large helping of love.
Come here and experience the splendour with your own eyes and taste buds.

D
on’t worry if your own attempt at growing vegetables was not successful this year. The many charming and genuine farm shops in Blekinge will give you a fantastic opportunity to save the day and buy both organic and locally produced goods, straight from the county’s own producers. Whether you are looking for free-range eggs, home-made ice-cream or, for that matter, an elegant lantern, there will be something for you. Here is a selection of all the farm shops to discover in Blekinge. IN GÄRESTAD VILLAGE, right outside Ronneby, you will find Äggaboden, a farm shop with an associated bed & breakfast, a greenhouse and a fowl-run. Äggaboden is located on a beautiful farm from the 1700s and 1800s and is run by Anna-Lena and Peter Hansson. They offer an abundance of delicacies from Blekinge,
Småland, Skåne and Öland. One hot tip is Anna-Lena’s own mayonnaise, made from eggs from their farm and which was described as “an ardent summer kiss” by Carl-Jan Granqvist himself. Äggaboden has also been awarded Guldklövern (the Golden Clover), BLT’s farming award and Skåneländska Gastronomiska Akademiens (the Scania Academy of Gastronomy’s) diploma – come here and experience the splendour with your own eyes and taste buds. YOU CANNOT VISIT BJÖRKETORPS GÅRD in Johannishus without trying their ice-cream which is made on site. They offer classic flavours like strawberry, chocolate and vanilla, while the more adventurous can find new favourites such as Jack Daniel’s and Djungelvrål salt liquorice. After the ice-cream you are welcome to pet the farm’s American Quarter Hors-
Farm shops Spjutsbygds Gård, Rödeby Lamb from Spjutsbygd Gård is bred in accordance with the KRAV rules and the farm offers both chops and roasts. You can also buy sheepskin – just let them know if you are going to use it for upholstery, a rug or a pram, the staff will show you the best fit.
Eriksberg farm shop, Trensum At this nature reserve, the gourmet is in his element. Eriksberg farm shop offers delicacies such as fallow deer heart and wild duck pâté. When you are done shopping, you are welcome to explore the park and come within touching distance of the animals from the park's safari Jeep.
Riksdagsmannagården, Trensum Whether you feel like meat or are looking for gifts, this is your destination. You can find everything from game and fish to handicrafts and gift boxes, and if you come on a Saturday or Sunday in the summer, there are biscuits on offer as well.
Locally produced goodies for young and old alike.
es and relax among the many dogs and cows that live here. As Björketorps gård is strongly focused on dairy production, the choice of souvenir is self-evident – milk from the farm’s dispenser. Bring or buy a glass bottle, pay and fill up your bottle. You cannot get any more locally produced and organic than that. GUMMAGÅRDEN IN SÖLVESBORG is a Mecca for vegetable lovers. They have a plot the size of three football fields with cucumber and other vegetables, as well as substrate farming of strawberries, where the plants are grown on scaffolding about a metre above ground. This makes the growing season longer and enables Gummagården to harvest berries from the end of April to the beginning of September. If you want to buy a gift for someone from Gummagården, a safe bet is their vegetable basket: Pick your favourite vegetables and top
it up with a candle, a canvas bag or a couple of flowers. Your gift will be an assured success. n
Elleholms tomater, Mörrum 300,000 tomatoes a day are harvested at peak season at Elleholms tomater. Buy as many as you can carry or browse such delicacies as pickled herring, salmon and marmalade.
Ekne Gård, Jämshög There is an abundance of potatoes at Ekne Gård – four different varieties are farmed here. Their potatoes and eggs from their own farm are complemented by several locally produced goodies – cucumber from Norje, honey from Jämshögs biodlarförening and apple juice from Öspab.

Blekinge prides itself on its many passionate culinary artisans. CULINARY PACKAGE TOUR The gourmet tour can bring groups of 15-20 people by bus to its four farms. A pleasant day trip with many new impressions and experiences. Find out more about what the tour entails and how to book at gourmetturiblekinge.se.
F
or the connoisseur, Blekinge is just one large smorgasbord. If you want to have the time to see, experience and taste as much as possible, the popular Gourmet Tour is an excellent choice. The tour includes four of the most celebrated producers and culinary artisans in all of Blekinge. The day begins with a visit to Boel and Lars Dahlberg at Orranäs Gårdsmejeri in eastern Blekinge. The couple make cheese from milk produced by their own goats, and cow’s milk from a nearby organic farm. Their hand-crafted cheese has been awarded multiple prizes in various culinary competitions. At the Cheese Festival 2017, their “Vit Caprin” won gold, while Gårdsosten and Varpan, their organic cheese made from cow’s milk, won bronze.
THE NEXT STOP IS Sturkö outside Karlskrona, the largest island in the Blekinge archipelago. Here you will find Sturkö rökeri where they process fish in accordance with traditional methods that originated in the 15th century. The old masonry ovens are used for smoking a variety of delicacies from the sea and if you want to delve more deeply into the subject, you can watch a demonstration of the ovens and the traditional smoking methods. We take the boat back to the mainland and continue towards Stora Boråkra, a ten-minute drive from Karlskrona. This impressive estate from the 1880s is home to one of Sweden's largest vineyards. Since 2009, the founders Staffan and Lil Ottosson have cultivated around 4,000 vines of the Solaris variety on their land, and release several vintages of their own wine. You can take the tour and learn more about the fine art of wine-making, participate in tastings and have something to eat in magnificent surroundings. THE GOURMET TOUR CONCLUDES WITH THE Widebrandt family at their farm, Askunga Dovvilt Gårdsbutik & Kafé. The popular and well-stocked farm shop sells everything from locally sourced game, beef, pork, lamb and chicken to eggs and other exciting products from small Swedish producers. Much of the meat comes from the farm's own stock and everything is selected on the basis of criteria such as good animal husbandry and high quality. Also take the opportunity to say hello to the farm’s deer, cows, pigs and goats before you round off the day. n

Arkipelagrutten WINDING COUNTRY ROADS, QUIET bays, deserted islands and the open sea. Arkipelagrutten takes you through the Blekinge archipelago, alongside and on its wonderful waters. Arkipelagrutten is a network of trails where you choose whether to experience the landscape and culture on foot or by bicycle, kayak or boat. Thirteen hubs connect the trails and offer food, accommodation and adventure. The route is under development and the hubs will gradually evolve into places where you can change your mode of transport – disembark or go out to sea.
In 2018, you can enjoy the kayak trail, and the other trails will be launched by the summer of 2019, together with an app containing everything a visitor needs to know about transportation, accommodation and opportunities for eating and shopping. The route goes through the Blekinge Arkipelag biosphere area – designated by UNESCO as a model area for the sustainable development of its unique interconnected natural and cultural values. It gives the visitor a diverse experience of getting closer to its nature and cultural history.
Hiking gems Blekingeleden, 260 km Blekingeleden runs for 260 km through Blekinge from Sölvesborg in the west to Bröms (35 km north-east of Karlskrona) in the east on the border between forest and open sea. Lace up your hiking boots or a pair of proper walking shoes and set out on the beautiful trails. Below are three gems along the trail. Boafall – Fritzatorpet (Olofström), 13 km From Boafall, the view of the calm waters of Lake Halen is practically addictive. Have a seat amongst the grazing sheep and enjoy the view of the lake. The trail winds along the edge of Lake Halen all the way to Fritzatorpet just north of Olofström. Långasjönäs – Järnavik, (Karlshamn – Ronneby), 30 km
Travel the Blekinge archipelago with Skärgårdstrafiken WHAT MAKES THE Blekinge archipelago different from Sweden’s other archipelagos is the fact that most islands have leafy forests. Go out and explore picturesque fishing villages, lay out a picnic on a rock warmed by the sun or have a refreshing swim in the sea. From Karlskrona, you can travel out into the eastern archipelago to the major islands, and by the river to Nättraby. You can also opt to discover Karlskrona with the Hop-on-Hop-off boats. Do not miss the stunning landscape around Törneryd, where impressive estates form a backdrop to a landscape that Selma Lagerlöf described as Blekinge’s three steps – the forest, the midlands and the coast – in her story, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils. Kristianopel – Bröms, Karlskrona, 9 km From beautiful Kristianopel, Blekingeleden heads north, past Eriksholm and the dunes of Höga Sand where wind-borne sand creates wholly unique environments for plants and animals. From Blekingeleden, it is but a kilometre to the coast and a dip in the big blue. Do not miss the Peace Rock by Brömsebro where Axel Oxenstierna made peace with the Danes in 1645.

ince 2004, White Guide has picked the best of the Swedish culinary bunch. Each year, they sample around 800 restaurants that are all judged based on a points system divided into four categories: food, drink, service and setting/ ambience. To attain the top ranking, ”Global Masters level”, the restaurant must score a minimum of 80 points – of which 36 points must come from the food category. Since 2013, they also grade Swedish cafés. IN THE 2017 EDITION of the restaurant guide, Blekinge can pride itself on having no fewer than eight restaurants and cafés listed, two of which are graded Very Fine Level. The Visenten restaurant at Eriksberg Hotel & Nature Reserve is one of them. They have been

able to call themselves Blekinge’s best restaurant for three years in a row. The secret behind their success is the overall impression that starts out in the safari park among the mouflon sheep and boar, and continues in the restaurant. They offer the occasional international delicacy, but Swedish flavours, composed of produce from their own farm and the nearby area, is their signature. And if you have a sweet tooth, you can enjoy top-notch pastry. Ritz Conditori in Sölvesborg received the corresponding mention in the café category. In their case, it was the sourdough bread and the sumptuous pastries that enticed the White Guide critics. Do not miss out on the chocolate mud cake with crispy caramel, or their macaroons and a cup of coffee brewed with beans from Blekinge Kafferosteri. n

ur day begins on the cobblestones of Stortorget. For anyone with an interest in architecture and history, few places can compete with the splendour of this square. Here are two of the foremost Swedish examples of baroque architecture. The first is the beautiful Fredrikskyrkan, a legacy from the period of Swedish Empire. The church has recently been restored and is now an amazing venue for a multitude of activities. We continue to its neighbour, the immense Trefaldighetskyrkan with its magnificent ceiling. This octagonal church was built by German migrant labourers who previously had had no place of worship of their own in the town. Walking among the dark wooden pews makes your thoughts wander.
Fredrikskyrkan.
WE CONTINUE, leaving the churches at Stortorget down towards Amiralitetsparken, one of the town's green oases. It houses a fun playground for children and the park is perfect for a summer picnic or a moment of relaxation on the sun-drenched lawns. After having recharged our batteries in the park, we head towards a true Karlskrona icon – the wooden statue of Gubben Rosenbom. Just like the migrant labourers, he also hails from another place. Rosenbom came from Åland and is said to have been one of the first settlers in the new town of Karlskrona at the beginning of the 18th century. To this day he stands outside Amiralitetskyrkan with his hand outstretched, his sign and his poor box. The statue is really a well-made replica, the original is sheltered from the weather inside the church. If you want to donate to the church’s activities, you simply lift Rosenbom’s hat. There are interesting remains and buildings from the period of Swedish Empire everywhere in Karlskrona, as well as from other eras. But sometimes you need a break from the tumultuous history and interesting anecdotes. So it is nice that this World Heritage Site has one foot in the sea and offers a multitude of opportunities for sun and sea. All in all, there are 32 official bathing areas and hundreds of bays for swimming, so it is highly likely that you will stumble across your own little gem.
tre long ropewalk and the other well-preserved industrial buildings. We are shown around by an expert guide and all of a sudden the stories spring to life. Stories about technical progress, industrial history and of course the people who worked on the site. It is a kind of revelatory experience when we realise how closely interlinked Sweden’s path to empire is to this old naval dockyard.
… that all there was at the location where Karlskrona was founded, was a simple farmstead?
AFTER A REFRESHING swim we set out for Lindholmen, which is a stone’s throw away from Rosenbom and Amiralitetskyrkan. Holmen is a military command area to which the Karlskrona Tourist Agency organises visits. With the waves washing on the shore, we take in the smell of tar from the ropewalk. We are guided around the islet where the Karlskrona shipyard has been located ever since the 17th century and marvel at the more than 300-me-
THERE WERE numerous workers at the shipyard and most of them lived on Björkholmen. Many of the cottages are low, made from oak and some of them have been preserved since the 18th century. With a little bit of luck, we may still hear someone speak in the old, genuine Karlskrona dialect here. One distinct feature of the quarters is Varvsmuren (the Shipyard Wall), which historically separated civil society in Karlskrona from the military. n

More museums in the county Blekinge Sjöfartsmuseum Karlshamn is home to Blekinge Sjöfartsmuseum that showcases maritime history. The museum is located in an old tobacco warehouse that is 250 years old, and it is open all year round.
PUNSCH TIPS A classic student tradition is to drink punsch with pea soup, but this drink goes well with so many other things as well. Try replacing the red wine for cheese with punsch, or why not replace the cognac with punsch when the dessert is chocolate-based?
I
f you are interested in history and are visiting Karlshamn – then you are in the right place. Because this is where Karlshamns Museum is located, in the centre of the town’s illustrious cultural district. In the same neighbourhood, we find Karlshamn's Punschmuseum, which is dedicated to this very Swedish beverage that has become synonymous with the town. IT TOOK NO more than 100 years for punsch to become associated with Sweden. In the beginning, people made their own, but Blekinge soon became a hub for the industrial production of this sweet and strong drink. Karlshamn became the obvious capital of punsch and its history is still closely connected to the town. At the museum, you can see and experience what a regular day at the factory might have looked like, surrounded by erstwhile equipment and machinery; everything from the factory machines to bottles and labels that will transport you back to the factory floor of the 19th century. THE MUSEUM TOUR BEGINS with arrack’s long journey to Sweden with the East India Company in the 1700s and does not end until our modern era. The passionate guides at the museum mix interesting facts with funny anecdotes. For example, did you know that the word punsch is said to originate from
the word pantj, the number five in Hindi? Its name refers to the five original ingredients of punsch: arrack, sugar, lemon juice, water and tea. AS YOU TREAD the old wooden floors, your thoughts go back to the days when the factory was full of life. It is difficult not to think of L O Smith, the man who is known to many as Brännvinskungen (King Schnapps). You see, it was Smith who registered the new brand and logo, consisting of the two crossed naval flags, for his Carlshamn punsch. You will learn all about this and much more at the museum, if you join one of the guided tours. A STONE’S THROW AWAY FROM the museum is Skottbergska gården. This place, with its cobblestoned courtyard, is one of Sweden’s best preserved examples of a typical, 18th century merchant house. The interior is in pristine condition, which really fires your imagination. The creaky stairs to the second floor, the kitchen with its large cooker, what was it really like to live here? What was it like to be a travelling salesman in an era hundreds of years before smartphones? The guides are happy to tell you about the history of the estate, a story that, by the way, goes hand in hand with the general history of punsch and Karlshamn. n
Kallinge Museum In Ronneby, you can see foundry equipment and enamelled objects that reflect the town’s history. Other exhibitions at the museum are also peculiar to Kallinge from a societal, commercial and community perspective.
Kamera- och Galgmuseum Olofström is home to a unique museum. The camera and coat-hanger museum exhibits cameras from the last century as well as a large variety of coat-hangers.
Karlskrona Bilmuseum Come and see a Cadillac that belonged to Gustav VI Adolf, the famous Volvo Amazon of the Vallåkra Gang and Olof Palme’s last car.
Karlskrona Porslinsmuseum Step into the old porcelain factory and see the range of products that were made there in its heyday in the last century. Their china can still be found today in many homes throughout Karlskrona.
Blekinge Museum In central Karlskrona, we find the family-friendly Blekinge Museum that showcases the rich cultural heritage of the county. They also organise concerts and other events.

Creative Blekinge Stroll among the forest people, enjoy a coffee next to the water tower and meet creativity in the old village school in Ramdala. W
ith illustrious craft traditions and a number of well-known artists, Blekinge has a definite seat at the Swedish design table. Show me someone who does not have a cast-iron skillet from Ronneby or a Karlskrona lamp in the house. Join us on a creative journey from the past to the present. WE BEGIN OUR JOURNEY at a true gem on the shores of Mörrumsån. Ebbamåla Bruk is one of Sweden’s best preserved pieces of industrial heritage where, among other things, machinery for the paper industry was manufactured, from the 1800s up until the sixties. When operations ceased, everything was preserved and today, the factory is a living museum. But make sure to book your visit in advance, as they only accept prebooked parties. IF WE CONTINUE OUR tour, we quickly arrive at Ronneby Bruk. They say that when design and function go hand in hand, a classic is born – the cast-iron skillet from Ronneby Bruk is an example of that. Because whether you just want to show off in the kitchen or simply fry up some meatballs, the company’s skillets have been the obvious choice for many people. Another business that is still a beacon of success, is the Karlskrona Lamp Factory. At the end of the 19th century, the Swedish Defence Force and the railways requested Swedish-made paraffin lamps, which was the starting point for the country’s first lamp factory. The lamp factory is an interesting destination, not least for anyone interested in design, and who probably knows all there is to know about the best-seller Koholmen. THE ICONIC “EMIL OF LÖNNEBERGA” became a skilled whittler as he sat in the woodshed atoning for his mischief. For Susanne Demåne, wood art took off when 40 | VISITBLEKINGE.SE
she bought an old dilapidated building that needed heating. As a consequence, she quickly became skilled at chopping wood and realised that she could create wood sculptures. Today, Demåne is a multi-talented artist, renowned in and around Blekinge, largely due to her wood sculptures of the forest people. But her talents go far beyond that, and in her studio and garden at the old school in Edestad, you will also see colourful paintings and enamellings. As if this was not enough, Susanne is also skilled in freedom dressage and displays a unique interaction with her fabulous horses. ANOTHER VILLAGE SCHOOL, more precisely the old school building in Ramdala, is home to the potter Karin Meijer. A visit here will give you a shot of inspiration in the form of colours and shapes. Over the years, Karin has become immensely popular for her stoneware and porcelain art and nowadays, she is also leaving her artistic mark on Karlskrona with a number of public artworks. ANOTHER DEFINITE stop-over on the Blekinge art tour is the Nättraby water tower. Here, on top of Ekbacken, we find the glass artist Malin Mena and her glass paradise. The old water tower is overflowing with creativity. Glastornet (the Glass Tower) is home to a glassworks and a shop in a building that in 2006, was awarded Architects Sweden’s house-building prize for Malin’s crystal clear extension. OUR FINAL STOP is Magnus Jönsson who has many years’ experience of working with wrought iron and one of his specialist skills is making knives from meteorite iron. In the forge outside Mörrum, you can find Magnus at work and can listen to his stories about the art of forging and its history, and about his passion for iron. You will also have an opportunity to try your hand at the craft and buy your very own meteorite knife. n

They say that when design and function go hand in hand, a classic is born. Peep into Malin Mena’s lovely Glass Tower.
The elegant paraffin lamp, Koholmen, was included in the portfolio as early as the end of the 19th century.

TINGSHUSET Our first stop could be described by the phrase, ”International Darling”. Gunnar Asplund, the renowned and respected architect who not only put Stockholm on the architectural map, but also made sure to include Sölvesborg. His most famous work is the woodland cemetery, Skogskyrkogården, outside Stockholm as well as the Stockholm Public Library. But he also designed Tingshuset (the Courthouse) in Sölvesborg, early in his career. Today, the building is considered an architectural gem and attracts visitors from all over the world. SÖLVESBORGSBRON We continue our journey, but we remain in Sölvesborg and make our way down to the headland by the marina. This is where we find Sölvesborgsbron,
which in a sense has put the town in the limelight since it opened in 2013. Europe’s longest foot and bicycle bridge, which has gained prominence due to its sculptural shape and spectacular lighting, has been covered by CNN Style and is listed as one of the ten most innovative bridges in the world by the international magazine, Designboom. A must-see for anyone interested in design. KALLBADHUSET KARLSHAMN. Another building that will attract your attention and which has also won awards is the Karlshamn Kallbadhus. Karlshamn has a long tradition of bathing and has had several swimming baths. Thanks to the enthusiasts who started the society, “Kallbadhusets Vänner” in 2008, the town once again got swimming baths in 2015. And the architecture is anything but tepid. With its distinct shape
Kallbadhuset was awarded the Karlshamn Urban Planning Prize in 2015.
Today, the building is considered an architectural gem.

and silver-grey, wooden façade, it is definitely worth a visit for lovers of both saunas and design. Kallbadhuset in Karlshamn is open to the public all year round. SKOTTSBERGSKA GÅRDEN Castles and manor houses are common throughout the country, buildings that tell us about the lives of noblemen and royalty. But merchant houses are less common. The fact is that merchant houses preserved in their original state are difficult to find, not only in Sweden, but throughout Europe. But lo and behold, Karlshamn has Skottsbergska gården – the country’s most well-preserved merchant house from the 1700s. It is definitely worth a detour and will give you fascinating insights into the homes of the erstwhile bourgeoisie. n

sing a bicycle for exercise is becoming increasingly popular, both for serious training sessions and for the pleasure of cycling. Cycling is an activity that is suitable for most people, whether the aim is to navigate rough terrain on a mountain bike with 30 gears or to just feel the wind in your hair on a classic Monark bicycle.
from idyllic scenery to enjoy during a short coffee break to attractions such as Gudahagen just outside Näsum with its fabled iron-age burial sites, or delightful encounters with nature in the Ljungryda Nature Reserve by the border with the province of Skåne.
RYSSBERGET IN SOUTHWEST Blekinge is a popular destination for mountain bike enthusiasts all year round, but particularly during the summer months, when the canopies form a verdant roof over the trails. The beech forest is one of Sweden’s oldest and contributes significantly to the beauty of the nature reserve. At 150 metres above sea level, Ryssberget stands out in the otherwise relatively flat landscape and it is a glorious experience navigating the many undulating trails. Are you an MTB rookie? Then maybe stick to one of the many waymarked trails that criss-cross the area.
SYDOSTLEDEN IS CLASSIFIED AS one of the best cycle trails in Sweden and runs from Växjö in the province of Småland to the north, through places like Karlshamn and Kristianstad, all the way to Simrishamn in Österlen, in the province of Skåne. Sixty kilometres of this 270 km, predominantly car-free, trail winds its way through our province. The seven sections vary in length from 30 to 50 kilometres and have easy to medium levels of difficulty. You are of course free to put together your own route based on where you want to start and how far you would like to travel.
A SOMEWHAT MORE relaxed route is the old rail embankment running between Olofström and Sölvesborg and which is now a perfect cycle path for families. This is due to the fact it is asphalted and that the 28-kilometre path is entirely free from cars. The section, which runs all the way to Listerlandet in the south has a variety of things to offer. ight golf courses within an hour’s drive makes Blekinge a paradise for anyone who wants to get the most out of their green fees and the hole-in-one opportunities in as many places as possible. Blekinge’s countryside with its deciduous forests and proximity to water is an excellent backdrop for the eight courses that, with all their differences and similarities, form what is known as Sweden’s Golf Coast. IF YOU WOULD LIKE to start by playing a particularly illustrious course, you should go to Sweden’s third oldest golf club, Carlskrona, which was founded in 1906 and moved to Almö in 1955. Why not make an entrance that will make you stand out among all the golf carts – and arrive by boat at the jetty at the 18th green. If the weather turns against you during your round, you can go indoors to the swing studio. They have cameras
and analysis software that will help you hone your skills, whereas if you want to improve your short game, you can try out the putting lab. THE SETTING, AS WELL AS THE WEATHER AND wind conditions are all important for the complete golf experience. Trummenäs Golf Club’s location is practically unique in Sweden. Thanks to its location in the eastern archipelago, you can play here almost all year round – even in winter. Because that is when the winter golf season begins, and they play every Sunday, even when the course is more white than green. After Trummenäs, you can pack your golf bag and go to the beautiful park course of Ronneby GC, which is adjacent to Brunnsparken. Here, you can combine brilliant golf with enthralling natural beauty. Eskers, glacial troughs and stone age graves have been preserved on and near the course. n

H
iking and bus tours are all well and good, but if you want to experience the archipelago in a new and different way, we recommend taking a look at the hottest sightseeing trend right now: Stand-up paddle boarding (SUP). It is precisely what it sounds like – you paddle on the water, standing on a board. SUP started as a sport in Hawaii and during the 2010s, it grew into a trendy form of exercise in Sweden as it provides a workout for the whole body and requires both strength and balance. In spite of that, SUP is a fairly ”gentle” form of exercise as you glide along on the surface and are not dependent on raw, explosive strength, so everyone, irrespective of age, can try it out. But SUP is not just a sport. The Blekinge archipelago was made to be experienced from the water using the board for transportation, with only your own strength to limit you. As you stand on the board you can easily take in the scenery, something you will have plenty of time for, as you do not have to be able to react in seconds or have almost superhuman reflexes, like in traditional surfing. RENT A KAYAK IN BLEKINGE ARCHIPELAGO You will find the equipment for an SUP experience at Blekinge Air Kayaks in Ronneby, who specialise in renting out inflatable kayaks that can also double as boards. The kayaks are both seaworthy and resilient, and are easily transported by bike, boat and plane. If you have tried SUP and it gave you an appetite for more unconventional water sports you should try the next trend: Kite boarding. It also involves standing on a board but unlike SUP, there is no need to paddle forward. Instead, you are propelled by a large power kite that pulls you and your board forward using wind power. Like SUP, kite boarding is a relatively new sport in Sweden. The sport was established around the turn of the millennium, which maybe makes it extra fun to try.
BOTH SUP AND kite boarding are perfect for anyone who would like a more adventurous holiday, and at the same time take the opportunity to get some input and feedback from pros. When you rent a kayak from Air Kayaks, they will tell you which model suits you best (if you are going to try SUP, you should use the NeedleNose). You can also take the opportunity to consult with the owner Thomas Masseck about the best places in the area for camping and staying overnight. The Blekinge archipelago has close to a thousand islands, islets and skerries, and he knows which ones you shouldn’t miss. If you have any questions about safety or Allemansrätten (the Everyman’s Right), he is also the go-to guy, and best of all: For just a few krona more, you will get coffee or a lunch basket to bring along on your trip. n

A different kind of world championship If you are able to schedule your visit to Blekinge for September 5-9, you will have the opportunity to experience a different kind of world championship up close. That is when the Casting World Championships are held at Ronneby Brunn. TEXT: Fridah Jönsson
C
asting is a sport that is practised with fishing rods on land and the aim is to either cast for distance (the top athletes cast around 100 metres) or to cast for accuracy and hit a specific target, such as a bowl, that is located eight metres from the starting spot. The game is divided into the three main categories of fly, multiplier and spinning, which in turn are divided into disciplines of distance, accuracy, single handed and double handed. The sport requires great coordination, stamina and agility. Wind direction plays
Swimruns this year
a major role, and since practitioners frequently manufacture their own rods, they must know everything about their material and construction. CASTING HAS BEEN PRACTISED in Sweden since 1914 and back then it was practised on water. However, since the 1960s, the sport has been practised on land. Previously, Sweden has hosted both the European and the World Championships on several occasions, most recently in 2007 – and this year it is time for Ronneby to host the competition.
The Swedish swimrun trend is still going strong and Blekinge is host to a multitude of competitions. These demanding events combine running and swimming with no respite in between. The first event is Kustjagaren in Karlskrona on June 30, and on July 21 it is time for the Island Challenge in Karlshamn and on August 11, the Karlskrona Swimrun event takes place. Get your friends or colleagues together for a memorable team building event. But be sure to book early – the tickets sell like hotcakes.

During the championship on September 5-9, you will see a series of thrilling duels as more than 100 participants from several countries compete for the title of world champion in the different disciplines. lekinge County is replete with events. Both festivals, concerts and sporting events have their place in the schedule and there is a wide variety of events. We will guide you through some of this year’s high points, so take out your calendar and map, and start planning for an eventful visit. On June 6-9, it is time to dig out your studded belt and warm up your head-banging muscles, because that is when Sweden Rock Festival starts up in Norje outside Sölvesborg. The festival, which is one of Sweden’s largest, is the highlight of the year for rock fans of all ages from around fifty countries. Since its inception in 1992, SRF has seen a host of legendary artists such as Kiss, Motörhead and Alice Cooper, and this year the festival is proud to present stars like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne. Rock on! KARLSHAMNSTRAVET IS AN annual tradition that attracts newbies and veterans alike to Arena Albertswill. Enjoy harness racing at its best. The fact that the audience gathers inside the track makes Karlshamnstravet unique and your harness racing experience will definitely be something extraordinary. In the week beginning July 16, the races are held that also open Östersjöfestivalen in Karlshamn. Bring your fellow travellers, have a bit of a flutter on that winner you have a gut-feeling about, and enjoy the speed and excitement. Hasslöfestivalen in Karlskrona is a true gem among festivals in Sweden. The event started in 2000 and acquired a name for itself mainly through rock and Swedish progg music, but over the years, performers from a variety of genres have played here. Last year’s performers included Per Gessle, Millencolin, Magnus Carlson and Miss Li. This year, bands such as Europe and Nationalteatern will take to the
stage. If you want to experience classic camping, then organise your tent or caravan and stay in the festival area itself. For a more exclusive experience, avail of the festival’s hotel offer at Scandic. The dates to circle in your calendar are July 12-14. IN HÄLLEVIK AT LISTERLANDET, the Trad Jazz Festival celebrates its fifteenth anniversary. Each year, between 10,000 and 15,000 visitors arrive at the charming and authentic festival that this year offers five different stages. One recommendation is the programme, ”Musik på byn” which promotes street music and where the organisers have hinted at spontaneous performances by the orchestras. The Trad Jazz Festival is actively working on booking young musicians and on increasing the proportion of women performers. If you enjoy high-quality jazz from several corners of the earth, performed in an amazing setting, this is where you need to be on August 9-12. n
