THE PHOTOGRAPHIC NARRATIVE
Purpose of this assignment This unit aims to develop learners’ understanding of photojournalism and provide you with the skills needed to undertake professional photojournalism work. This unit introduces learners to the purposes and styles of photojournalism used in a range of publications. Learners will investigate how published photographs are shaped by the news values of different publications, the interests and tastes of the readers, and by legal, regulatory and ethical issues. Learners will investigate the processes undertaken by photojournalists and then use this knowledge and their photographic skills to create their own portfolio of work. They will then have the opportunity to critically reflect on their own photojournalism work.
Scenario Every year, Gloucestershire College Film & Media Production students stage a public exhibition of their photography in Gloucester Quays shopping centre as an accompaniment to the annual film screening that takes place in Cine-world. This year we intend to include a new section of work highlighting the importance of photojournalism as a genre of photography. The work shown can be reportage, documentary or artistic. The images must be able to influence local newspaper, magazine and website editors, who see the installation, to hire you as a photojournalist. You will pick a theme, or a selection of themes, and create a photographic narrative that represents different aspects of your chosen topic. The images you present must be interesting, vivacious and entertaining. Remember that Gloucester Quays shopping centre is a public space catering to children and young adults. Your work must be suitable for this audience. Task 1: (LO 1 & LO2: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, M1, D1, M2 & D2) You must be able to 1.1: Analyse examples of photojournalism in their commercial context 1.2: Analyse examples of photojournalism in the ethical context within which photojournalists work 1.3: Analyse examples of photojournalism in the legal and regulatory context within which photojournalists work 2.1: Critically assess the editorial factors that can influence the work of photojournalists 2.2: Critically review the types of commission that are available to a photojournalist In addition to creating images for newspapers, magazines and on-line publications, the work of the photojournalist requires an understanding of the commercial context alongside the legal, ethical and regulatory framework within which they must work. For this task, you will either (1) Write an essay (with supporting images) of between 3000 to 4000 words OR (2) Create a 10 to 15-minute visual essay. Your piece, whether it be written or moving image, should contain commentary and images analyzing the work of influential photojournalists and discussions on the commercial, ethical and regulatory factors that influence their work. Your submission should also critically assess and review (1) the editorial factors that influence the work of photojournalists and (2) the types of commissions available to the photojournalist. You must hand in a properly formatted Harvard reference alongside your work to show that you have researched a diverse range of sources (books, websites, newspapers, magazines etc.) To achieve M1 show that you have applied an effective approach to study and research (see contextualisation on page 3) To achieve D1 receptiveness to new ideas must be evident in your work (see contextualisation on page 3) To achieve M2 show your selection of methods, techniques and sources have been substantially justified (see contextualisation on page 3) To achieve D2 you must show that you are able to conduct detailed expository research, and that your work is critical and thorough (see contextualisation on page 3)
Task 2 (LO 3: 3.1, 3.2, M3 and D3) You must be able to 3.1: Plan photojournalistic projects working to a standard acceptable to an employer or client. 3.2: Produce creative photojournalism working to a standard acceptable to an employer or client. For this task you will produce and submit a portfolio of at least seven photojournalistic images that can be exhibited in our end of year photography show at the Quays. Remember to capture (and submit) your images in a raw and JPEG format. This will allow manipulation and high resolution prints. The themes in your work must be clear and the images, though photojournalistic, should be artistic. A good starting point would be to examine the selection of images in the annual Taylor Wessing photography competition. 
Attempt to develop your own personal visual language by drawing inspiration from the photojournalists you investigated in task one.

IMPORTANT: Each image MUST be approved by your lecturer before it can go into your portfolio .
To achieve M3 show a coherent and logical development of photojournalistic principles/concepts in your work (see contextualisation on page 3). To achieve D3 show that innovative and creative thought has been applied (see contextualisation on page 3).
Task 3 (LO 4: 4.1, 4.2) You must be able to 4.1: Critically evaluate your own photojournalism work against agreed criteria and make recommendations for improvements 4.2 Critically evaluate own skills development in photojournalism against agreed criteria and make recommendations for improvements. In order to improve the quality of your work, it is important to critically evaluate your own practice. For this task, you will examine and analyse your own work in a recorded discussion to be done in front of class. An assessment of your work should include: (1) looking at your images and comparing them to the work of other photojournalists, (2) determining if the final images are fit for purpose and (3) making specific suggestions on how the work , and your skills, can be developed and improved. The time for your evaluation will be given to you by your lecturer in class.

KEY POINTS ON ASSESSMENT CRITERIA The Merit & Distinction criteria will be further discussed during briefing sessions where you will be expected to take notes. You will have the opportunity throughout the assignment to discuss your work with staff. You must achieve all the pass criteria on a relevant unit to move on to merits grades and likewise with merits to achieve distinction grades. Notes (please take notes during briefing sessions)
PLEASE NOTE: It is essential that your work is grammatically correct with no spelling errors. There are several methods for assisting with this: Spell Check – All the software we use have UK spell check facilities that you should get familiar with. Copy Reading – After you have finished your assignment allow time to read back through it and amend any errors. Buddy Up – swap with a peer and read each others work, not only will you help them but you may learn something new as well. Authenticity – It is vital to your development that you are responsible for and produce your own work. You are expected to adhere to certain professional standards such as Harvard referencing your primary and secondary research and imagery that you use within your work. You should use a well-formatted bibliography at the end of your assignment or credit the work as you produce it by identifying the website, book, journal, magazine, blog etc where you found the information/image. Plagiarism – is serious, it is not acceptable to use other people’s work and try to pass it off as your own. The college uses a system called TURNITIN to check. It’s a simple process where we run your file through and it will identify how much is copied and where it’s from. Ignorance isn’t an excuse and we are far more interested in your own thoughts and opinions anyway.
How to hand in your assessment This assessment must be handed into Nosa Obayiuwana by the hand in date and time on the front of the assignment brief. If you have a valid reason why you will not be able to hand in the work on time, you will need to fill out and hand in an AE1.
