Welcome to Education Choices Welcome to this edition of Education Choices, the essential guide to what’s on offer in schools in Gloucestershire. The new year has only just begun, but already there are more decisions to be made on where to

send a child for the next stage of their academic life. There is so much choice out there whether you are looking for nursery, primary or secondary schools. There are independent fee-paying

schools, local authority ones and also the new academies all offering something different. Over the next few pages, we hope to make those choices a little easier by offering advice and information to help parents and

Computer games boost pupils’ results in class Playing computer games could help boost pupils’ concentration levels and improve their results in the classroom, research suggests. A study found that turning learning into a game helps stop the mind from wandering, allowing students to study better. Professor Paul Howard-Jones, who conducted the research, said computer games have been “trivialised” in recent years, but that used properly, they can help to accelerate pupils’ learning. The study saw 24 university students take part in three types of study session while having their brains scanned. In the first session, they were given conventional questions to look at, in the second there were multiple-choice quiz questions and the third was a computer-based game in which the students competed against

each other to answer questions. In return points were paid out on an escalating scale, if students were lucky, by a wheel of fortune. Researchers found that when students tried to study by just reading notes and looking at

Clever Cat Tuition Helping your child reach their potential Clever Cat Tuition offers individual or small group tutoring for children up to 12 years of age, in their own home. Work folder and materials are included in the fee. The individual cost for each child is reduced in small group tutoring. Tutoring format is designed for the individual child’s needs. Services available are tutoring in English or Primary Maths; SATS/exam preparation; specific learning techniques for children with Special Educational Needs; dyslexia screening; a full literacy/language assessment, and written report service; as well as a range of subjects and general advice for children who are home schooled.

It may be that just a little help is needed in specific parts of the curriculum, along with confidence building. But a child who is obviously ‘bright’ and under-achieving, may benefit from a more structured approach in order to focus and stretch their abilities. The first tutoring session is offered FREE to make a basic assessment/tutoring plan. Clever Cat Tuition is run by Amber Astron Christo who is a qualified teacher, with two degrees, (ex Special Needs Co-ordinator), who has worked in mainstream and special schools, and managed Speech and Language units. She said: “I try to make learning fun, and relevant, using a child’s interests to make it more engaging.”

example questions, a “Default Mode Network” in the brain – which makes the mind wander – was activated. But this disappeared when students took part in the game-based session, and their learning increased. Prof Howard-Jones, an educational nueroscientist and presenter of Channel 4 series The Secret Life Of 4, 5 and 6 Year Olds, said that when the Default Mode Network is activated, the mind wanders to other things – such as dinner plans – that are irrelevant to the task at hand. He said: “Technology has a reputation for doing bad stuff to children’s brains but it’s important that we don’t demonise it. This is evidence that computer games can be good for learning if we are careful about how we design and develop them.”

Gloucestershire College

Build your lucrative construction career at county college Following the successful launch of its new Construction Centre at Cheltenham Campus, Gloucestershire College is urging young people to consider a rewarding career in construction; an industry which is becoming increasingly lucrative due to the national skills shortage. According to the CITB’s 2015-2019 Construction Skills Network South West report, there are 6,320 construction jobs expected to be created in the South West every year for the next five years due to infrastructure investment and a 3.6 per cent growth in the sector. This includes bricklayers, plasterers, labourers, construction process managers and professional and technical staff, and the college is committed to attracting, training and retaining this next generation. Courses available across the college’s three main campuses include bench

joinery, brickwork, carpentry and joinery, construction and the built environment, domestic heating, dry lining, electrical installation, painting and decorating, plastering, plumbing and site carpentry, at Levels 1 to 3. GC Construction courses are taught in purpose-built workshops – new in Cheltenham and the Forest of Dean – by industry-experienced lecturers, and equip students with the skills, experience and qualifications for successful careers in this ever-growing sector. Those who would prefer to earn while they learn can take up an apprenticeship in construction, electrical installation, industrial and commercial heating and ventilation, motor vehicle and plumbing and heating. The college is the headline sponsor of #Apprentice1000, the campaign backed by Chancellor George Osborne to place 1000 apprentices in

Ben Mansfield, 27, from Gloucester successfully completed the GC Express course in carpentry Gloucestershire in 2016, and has good relationships with local employers, including the leading construction businesses. Mike Lawson, head of school for construction and building services, said: “Thanks to the new Construction Centres, we are now able to train students in real working environments at all three of our main campuses in Cheltenham, Gloucester

and the Forest of Dean, and fill the local skills shortage with qualified, experienced and motivated workers. “With 200,000 new affordable houses being created in the South West, and a need for 10,000 bricklayers and 8,000 plasterers across the country, there has never been a better time to train for a career in construction – it’s a job for life with the chance to earn big money.

The college is inviting young people and their parents to its upcoming Open Evenings, to explore the workshops and find out more about the courses and apprenticeships for themselves. These take place on Monday, January 25 (Gloucester) and Wednesday, January 27 (Forest of Dean), and Monday, February 1 (Cheltenham). Pre-register for your place at www.gc-openeve.co.uk

Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools Mrs Caroline Pascoe, Headmistress of Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls Energy, happiness and a sense girls can achieve extraordinary things are at the heart of Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls and its prep school, Inglefield House. With a mixture of day and boarding pupils, aged seven to 18, HMSG creates a real sense of community. Set in the beautiful Wye Valley, the School aims to provide the finest education possible and we are pleased to announce the introduction of a Year 7 Sports Scholarship which girls joining from September 2015 will be eligible to apply for. Inglefield House offers preparatory education for girls aged between seven and 11, with boarding now from seven. Situated on the same campus, Inglefield House benefits from HMSG’s extensive facilities, including Science laboratories, Theatre, Music School and superb Sports provision. A strong House system integrates girls from age seven through to 18. Academic results are impressive, ranked top in Wales for GCSE results in 2013. And in 2014, 42.6 per cent of the cohort were awarded A*s and more than half of all candidates (57 per cent) achieved nine or more A*/A grades. An impressive 81.4 per cent of girls were awarded A*/As in maths, and in IGCSE 90 per cent achieved A*/As in biology, 82.5 per cent were awarded A*/As in chemistry and 87.2 per cent received A*/As in physics.

With 100 per cent pass rate at A Level now a regular achievement, most girls win places at their first choice universities to read subjects as diverse as Medicine, Law, Languages, Engineering and Economics. In 2014, 52.6 per cent of girls achieved A*/A grades – more than double the national average of 26 per cent. A close link with our sibling, Monmouth School, provides a dynamic Sixth Form experience with seminar-style classes in preparation for university. Our new Sixth Form boarding house, Augusta House, further eases this transition between school and university. HMSG offers far more than just good grades. Whether a pupil’s passion is for Sport, Music, Drama, Photography, Dance or CCF, the School will encourage her to reach the highest standard. At all ages, your daughter will be encouraged to take personal responsibility, to think for herself and to understand service to the community.

Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools Dr Andrew Daniel, Headmaster of Monmouth School Monmouth School has been delivering educational excellence for more than 400 years. We are a powerful academic institution, but we are not a hot-house: we celebrate our most able boys achieving top grades in examinations, and taking places in the most prestigious universities; yet we are equally proud of our boys who balance their academic work with distinguished accomplishments in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Our first teams in sport compete at an exceptionally high level, and our top athletes are renowned nationally and indeed internationally, but we are also passionate about the success of our B, C and D teams. The achievements of our boys in music, art, drama and outdoor pursuits are extraordinary, with a vast array of concerts, theatre performances, expeditions and trips running throughout the school year. The extra-curricular and academic opportunities available to our boys are further enhanced through our collaborative partnership with the Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls. We develop and enhance our school facilities regularly, and our teaching, extra-curricular and boarding facilities are the envy of other schools. However, we have retained our fundamental ethos of providing value for money, and our fees are extremely competitive. In Tatler’s School Guide, 2015,

Students will benefit from small class sizes, plenty of one-to--one support and guidance, real life salon experience, commercial and consumer awareness, and a curriculum that is taught over and above national standards. They will also gain experience working with the award-winning salon, Cedars Health & Beauty Centre.

The Richard Pate School

Pupils take to the floor The Richard Pate School took a break from reading, writing and arithmetic recently to enjoy the waltz, the jive and the cha cha cha. The Year 4 children have been practising their dance moves as part of their PE programme at school and their teachers Jacq Miller-Howell and Claire Lewis thought it might add a bit of glamour to go with a “Strictly theme. The children have been working with their partners to produce routines in each dance step and have discovered that it is not only great exercise but also plenty of fun. The unit culminated with a performance in the school hall that was packed out with very appreciative parents and grandparents. Headmaster Robert MacDonald saw it as an excellent post-exam activity for the children. He said: “It was wonderful to see the children

enjoying themselves, increasing their fitness and learning a skill they can use for a lifetime.

our fees were rated “among the best value in the country. Allowing talented boys from many different backgrounds to join our school is an important objective for us, and therefore, we offer a wide range of scholarships and bursaries. The latest inspection of Monmouth School graded us as excellent, the highest possible standard, in every single category. However, this endorsement of our outstanding School has not made us complacent, but ambitious for our boys in the future: our vision challenges us to “be renowned for the remarkable and disproportionate contribution that the pupils from a small town in Wales subsequently make to society across the world. This is a challenge that we take very seriously: when our boys leave us we hope that they will be confident, happy, and inspired to make a positive impact on our world.

College helps learners make progress Understanding how well learners achieve at college is about more than just results and grades. At SGS we believe the best way to support learners to succeed is to help them make as much progress as possible between their starting point, when they join us, to the point that they leave us to progress onto university or into employment. SGS College has a proven track record of helping learners make more progress than would be expected nationally or at other similar institutions. In fact last year learners at SGS College studying both A levels and Vocational Qualifications made more progress than would usually be expected given their prior attainment! South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (SGS) is a friendly College, where you are coached and supported by tutors who really care. We offer well over 900 courses at SGS (both vocational and academic), superb facilities across three main campuses with a new site at Berkeley Green opening September 2016 and a team of dedicated teaching professionals. Last term Wycliffe students celebrated academic, creative and sporting success. Wycliffe’s Deputy Head Girl, Amelia Henley was awarded a place at Harvard – the world’s top university. The 17-year-old who is currently England number 2 squash player was awarded a substantial scholarship from Harvard. She also received interest from Princeton, Yale and Penn State universities. The Senior School celebrated excellent A-level and GCSE results. A third of students’ GCSE grades were A -A*. In A-levels, more than 95 per cent of students gained their first or second choice of university with a third of those places at Russell Group universities. A further six students gained places at prestigious American universities following excellent SAT results after studying in Wycliffe’s American university preparation programme. Wycliffe Head, Nick Gregory, said: “Exam results are important of course, and we are confident that we bring out the best academically in all of our pupils as shown by our consistently outstanding ‘value-added’

results and by the excellence of our provision – backed up by external accreditation – both for pupils requiring Learning Support and also for pupils achieving the highest possible academic standards. Beyond the classroom the Wycliffe squash team shone on their tour of Canada and the USA with Amelia Henley winning the U19 Canada Open. Year 10 pupil Tiernan Purkess won a silver medal in the Junior U15 Boys and Iona Wasdell won bronze at the World Indoor Rowing Championships. In CCF Aiden Coffey was one of only three Cadets across the country to be invited to the CCFA dinner in London. Mr Gregory said: “What makes Wycliffe distinctive is

that people really do matter here. Their differences and their individual qualities are truly valued and respected and everyone embraces the guiding principle of helping every single boy or girl to be the best that they can individually be. “This after all, is what nurturing potential is all about. I am delighted that we were able to capture the essence of what it means to be a part of the Wycliffe community in our recent promotional films, which I do hope you will check out by following this link https://vimeo.com/136645071. That nurturing of children’s talents starts at the Preparatory School. It is one of only 10 schools in the UK to be awarded a One Star Gold Schools

Membership by Potential Plus UK for its support of gifted and talented children. “We pride ourselves on helping pupils find their natural talents and help them grow and develop those skills be it sport, academics, the creative arts or growing in self-confidence, said Adrian Palmer, Headmaster of the Preparatory School. Last year it was the top school in England in its age group at the Language Perfect World Championships May 2015. The competition requires students to learn vocabulary and structures from 15 languages. The Preparatory School continues to build on its success and 2016 promises to be another exciting year.

All Saints’ Academy has had another successive year celebrating record-breaking examination results at A-level and GCSE. Principal of the Academy Mr McNiffe said: “Our Year 13 students achieved a fantastic 100 per cent pass rate at A-level with a significant improvement in students achieving higher level grades at A* to B. “The reason for this sustained improvement has been the focus on high expectations for all and encouraging our students to grasp the opportunity to succeed and excel in their learning. “This hard work and studious approach from all of our students has helped them reap the benefits of achieving great examination results. “The dedication and commitment of our teaching and support staff has also been a key factor in their success.” This success follows a year when All Saints’ Academy achieved a Good Ofsted report with outstanding and exceptional features. Mr McNiffe said: “Ofsted recognised that the Academy has an extremely positive Christian ethos that leads to exceptionally good behaviour and contributes to the outstanding spiritual, moral and social development of every child at All Saints.”

The many visitors we have at All Saints’ Academy always comment on how wonderful, friendly and purposeful the Academy atmosphere is. We welcome any parents/carers that would like to visit and have a tour of the Academy with Mr McNiffe, please contact 01242 711200.

Airthrie School

Wyedean School and Sixth Form

International feel at school

Care and attention Airthrie School prides itself on the very high standards of care and individual attention provided for every pupil. Highly conscientious teachers plan lessons, carefully ensuring that thought is given to the learning style and capacity of each child. A positive, happy approach with constant encouragement means that pupils enjoy school, display motivation and experience a wide spectrum of subjects both in and outside the classroom. An added advantage is regular use of the excellent Ladies’ College sporting and swimming facilities.

It is therefore no surprise that children between three and 11 years become successful, achieving students by the time that they progress to a variety of senior schools often having gained multiple scholarships and or Grammar school places. Our last OFSTED inspection confirmed this by awarding 'Outstanding' in all five judgements. You are warmly invited to meet both teachers and children while touring the school on a working day. Please telephone or email for an appointment. 01242 512837 sarah@airthrie-school.co.uk

Wyedean School in Gloucestershire has made it one of their priorities this year to promote and instil International and Global learning with students and staff. The MFL department organised a Mandarin Workshop – students had the opportunity to learn Mandarin, to try out calligraphy and taste Chinese snacks. The school now offers a weekly Mandarin club, taught by teachers funded by Confucius Institute, Cardiff and has led to the school becoming a hub for Mandarin teaching in local feeder primaries. Staff were encouraged to greet students in another language during European Week of Languages – a week which culminated in the European Day of Languages CafÊ where students tasted traditional food from different countries. Wyedean School has also applied for Re-Accreditation for

the British Council International School Award. Subject areas have been establishing links with schools worldwide via Skype– one example is in sociology where A-level students have established a link with a school in Africa to discuss current global social issues. In MFL students have been writing letters to our partner schools in Paris and Madrid, with the expectation of an exchange visit in March 2016. We’ve also managed to establish links with a school in

Canada – a project with which our Year 9 students are currently involved. The MFL department worked with the ICT department during European Code Week -–Year 7 students learnt how to design games in French using their ICT coding skills. KS3 MFL classes completed an ‘International Homework Project’ during International Education Week where they documented their international learning via video, blog or photo book. Furthermore, the school

organised its first International Christmas Market which involved the local community. There was international food with other stalls full of Christmas goodies. One of the stalls was run by Sixth Form students who sold jewellery provided by our partner school in Uganda. Year 8 students created International Bunting as part of the display for the Christmas market and Year 9/10 Languages Leaders performed the Nativity Play in Spanish and French. There were also international Christmas carols sung by the school choir. Year 9 Language Leaders will teach MFL to Year 6 in our feeder primaries in the New Year. The feeder primaries will also be involved in Wyedean’s first Chinese Day –held in February to celebrate Chinese New Year. Wyedean is also hoping to obtain the Recognition of Commitment to UNICEF’S Rights Respecting School Award.
