NYC PRETTY BOHEMIAN SUMMER ISSUE

editor’s letter

The weather is starting to take on some chill, but there’s still time for a last hurrah—seize the precious next few weekends of summer for a vacation or getaway with friends and loved ones, put on that daring shade of eyeshadow or bright lipstick you would never attempt before fall really and truly sets in. We know it’s going to be hard to say goodbye to this glorious weather, so ease the upcoming switch from summer to fall by taking a look at our lip and nail transition guide. Your fading tan could use a boost with some complementary gold accents, expertly curated by Amanda, our in-house graphic designer. We also profiled the fashionable Linda Rodin, mastermind behind the iconic Olio Lusso, as well as investigated the boho-chic stylings of Christine Bibbo Herr, the blogger behind nycpretty.com. There is a new "Dear Editor" column in GB Mag, where you can now submit your beauty questions and have them answered in next month’s edition. The GLOSSYBOX team also shared their music preferences—perhaps you’ll find some new tunes to play while cruising on the road. It’s the last of summer, so carpe diem and enjoy! xx,

Glossy Crush MEET THE MASTERMIND BEHIND THE BOHO-CHIC STYLINGS OF NYCPRETTY.COM, CHRISTINE BIBBO HERR. GB What are your top three favorite hangout spots in NYC? CB I love Central Park and Riverside Park because they’re places where I can check out and take in the noise-free atmosphere and get a great run in without all the fumes from the streets. I also love trying new restaurants downtown since I live on the upper west side. East Village and SoHo always have new places popping up. One of my favorite oldie but goodie is Tortilla Flats for fun and festive Mexican food and great margaritas in a colorful and playful spot. (They have hula-hoop night on Wednesday too! My favorite!) I also love a great dessert place. Cafe Lalo is a sparkly classic and has amazing sweets! >>

6

BLOGGER FEATURE

GB You seem to favor natural makeup. What are your go-to makeup and skincare products? CB I love Yes to Cucumbers Facial wipes. I use them for everything—my face before and after a workout, my feet on a hot NYC day and to freshen up my entire body when on the go. They even take out stains when a spill happens! Also, I love a great lipgloss, like Maybelline Color Sensational High Shine Lip Gloss; the Honey Moisturizer from Mario Badescu and their Rose Water Facial Spray for refreshing and hydrating; Cover Girl mascara and NARS or Neutrogena blush when I’m on the go. And I love Arrojo Dry Shampoo when I can’t wash my hair. If I wear too much makeup it feels unnatural and not me. (Unless I’m doing a TV segment, then all bets are off and on go the fake lashes!) I’m the spokesperson for Life & Style Weekly so I do all their TV appearances. >>

GB We are in love with your boho-chic style! What are your favorite places/ brands to shop for clothes? CB I love mixing thrift store finds with girly and sporty pieces. Some brands: Roxy & AE for outdoorsy and sporty surfer style, Betsey Johnson, Kate Spade, Alice + Olivia and Marc Jacobs for my girly fix, Free People, Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Henri Bendel and Rebecca Minkoff are some other brands that tend to be in my closet. For my workout and sweat sessions I love Puma, New Balance, Reebok, Nike, Asics, Lululemon, Hard Tail and Lorna Jane, to name a few. The list is long, I’m a tomboy at heart. GB What is your happiest blogging moment so far? CB I loved working with Roxy on their Roxy Outdoor Fitness campaign. I am an outdoorsy sporty kind of girl so it was amazing to be able to surf, run and workout for Roxy and wear their awesome gear. I have a few more projects in the works with them and I think it’s such an amazing, organic and successful relationship that we’ve developed over the years. GB What will you be doing to celebrate (or mourn) the end of summer?

CB Oh gosh! Don’t even say that! It is so sad to hear those words. I’m basically in denial until October when summer is truly over, but until then, I try to get as much surfing and beach time in as possible. Summer is everything to me! It allows me to be outdoors, enjoy nature and the activities that go with it—biking, running, yoga, surfing, swimming, skating etc. I really feel that it is the most positive time of year and brings out the happy in people. GB What do you love about GLOSSYBOX? CB I love that I can get a dose of beauty in a pretty little box once a month from great new brands. ABOUT CHRISTINE BIBBO HERR With a decade of experience as a fashion editor with a roster of national glossies under her belt, Christine parlayed her fashion expertise into being an independent stylist in NYC. Her passion for style led her to create nycpretty.com, where she provides a guide to the most current in fashion, beauty, health and lifestyle.

We’re now at the brink of a precipice, edging between summer and fall. Style choices are increasingly muddled during this inbetween. It’s not hot enough to don a short summer dress anymore, but not cold enough for boots and tights either. Ditto to lips and nails—do we go for the corals and brights of summer or the vampy, sooty, metallic and glittery of fall?

A day in the life of L I N DA RODIN

10AM I get up and take a bath and get ready for my day. I rinse my face with warm water, and then apply a few drops of RODIN olio lusso face oil, put on my some lipstick, get dressed and I’m off. 11AM I schedule my first meetings of the day. I am usually meeting with my art director or beauty consultant or pr girls, Project MM, to discuss what’s going on with my line.

1PM Lunch is around this time and then back to work. 5PM I usually return home around now. Another walk for the pooch (if he’s not with me at meetings, he has his dog walker who takes him for a stroll) and then I sit down and begin answering a slew of emails.

the evening I read, catch up with friends and watch TV. I never miss Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert. Then it’s lights out. I need a lot of sleep.

6PM - I eat early, usually an organic salad, a glass of white wine, and read the New York Times. The rest of GB MAG / August 2013

n her sixties today, Rodin is the model of spare elegance. She says of herself, “I really don’t spend too much time getting ready! I like to be out the door in no time.“ It’s this natural, devil-may-care brand of beauty that won her modeling jobs when she moved to Italy to study at age eighteen. That was in the Mod Sixties, when Rodin wowed all with her Twiggy eyelashes, over-the-knee boots, maxi coat, and five-inch skirt “That was more like a handkerchief.”

experimenting with essential oils in her kitchen for nearly two years, Rodin put the finishing touches on her first dream elixir, the original RODIN olio lusso face oil, in 2007. The models and makeup artists she worked with tried and loved it, and soon RODIN olio lusso was selling to a cult following at a few select stores. Magazine coverage and an international buzz followed.

love wearing glitter and textured nail polishes, but they are such a hassle to take off! I wreck my nails when I try to scrub them clean. Do you have any tips and tricks for removal? - PAM I absolutely understand what you mean! It’s like the more glitter in the nail polish, the worse it is for your nails. That said, there is an easy, fool-proof method to remove them. Soak a cotton ball with nail polish remover and place it on your nail, then wrap a strip of aluminium foil around it. Leave it on for five minutes. Finally, gently rub the aluminium tips when you remove them so the cotton will catch most of the sparkle. You’ll have fresh fingernails for a new coat of sparkle in no time!

I

would appreciate some advice on how and when to use my beauty oils. I love the Caudalie one I received in a previous box! Do I use it before or after my moisturizer and should I use it every day? I have combination/dehydrated skin. - LYNSEY Think of a beauty oil as a replacement for your moisturizer. With oily skin, a good beauty oil will trick your skin into thinking it has enough oil, and your skin will stop producing sebum (which cuts down on shine); with dry skin, face oils lock in moisture by forming a protective barrier over your skin. Since you have combination/dry skin, I would suggest using a moisturizing toner and serum, then applying the beauty oil as the final step. Hope this helps!

No needles, no laser –just nature. HOW CELEBRITIES ARE TURNING TO BLUEBERRIES TO ACHIEVE YOUNGER LOOKING SKIN! If you are looking for the most effective, natural way to achieve younger looking skin, take a closer look at the brand new natural skin care line Airelle™. It has been delivering such amazing results that it has become the fastest growing anti-aging collection among celebrities and Hollywood makeup artists. Los Angeles dermatology physician assistant, Kasey D’Amato, PA-C, felt frustrated with the lack of effective natural skin care on the market, so she set out to find a natural way to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Originally from the unspoiled state of Maine, Kasey ventured back to her roots in search for the perfect natural resource that would be both unique and beneficial for the skin. After years of extensive research, she finally discovered what she was searching for in the Maine blueberry plant. Kasey began developing a unique antioxidant ingredient derived from the Maine blueberry plant, and called her formula Berrimatrix®.

BERRIMATRIX( TM) AGE DEF YING FACIAL SERUM WITH HYALURONIC ACID This powerful formula infused with hyaluronic acid and powerful antioxidants is designed to help tighten, firm and smooth the skin. The non-sticky, non-greasy formula improves skin texture and encourages cell turnover. Use twice daily for best results. .85 FL. OZ $ 158

The Airelle anti-aging skin care line is designed to help condition damaged and aging skin, improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and reduce the appearance of pores. The results of a 28 day study conducted in Spring 2013 revealed over 80% of participants reported improvement in fine lines, wrinkles and texture. As a well-known dermatology professional in LA, it was no surprise that word spread quickly about the efficacy of Kasey’s Airelle products. Celebrities on many popular shows such as American Idol, The Voice, and Dancing with the Stars appreciate the unique benefits of this natural product line. In less than one year since the launch of the brand, Airelle is being used on the set of more than 25 TV shows, and many celebrities including Jenna Elfman and Denise Richards have praised the product line.

Celebrity makeup artists especially love the simplicity of this all natural line. “I love this stuff, I can’t live without it!” said Farah Bunch, makeup artist on the ABC Family series “Twisted.” If you are interested in learning more about Airelle visit airelleskin.com.
