JUNE 2013
AMERICAN BEAUTY DALLAS SHAW
We are thrilled to introduce the Glossy Girl in honor of our American Beauty box. The Glossy Girl embodies you—stylish, worldly, confident and mad for beauty. To bring her to life, we looked to fashion illustrator extraordinaire Dallas Shaw, an American Beauty herself. Her stunning sketch graces the top of June’s collectible edition GLOSSYBOX; a print is inside, ready to be framed.
6 OSCAR DE LA RENTA ESSENTIAL LUXURIES
22 BEHIND THE SCENES
Shaw also curated the product collection, culled from beloved American brands, all manufactured in the United States. For the fashion industry darling—who has collaborated with CHANEL, Shopbop and DKNY— the beauty space was exhilarating. "This was especially fun because I am a product junkie. I love to collect and display products with beautiful packaging, so sharing my personal picks with GLOSSYBOX subscribers has been a dream for me." GLOSSYBOX partnered with Oscar de la Renta on an exclusive photo shoot that features Shaw in six dresses from their ready-to-wear collection, evoking the inspiration behind each of the six scents in the Essential Luxuries fragrance collection. Of the project Shaw proclaims, "I said over and over that 'this absolutely cannot be real life. I got styled in the most beautiful gowns and we had the most talented group of people involved in this project, everyone from photographers to jewelry designers." That’s our kind of American Dream.

GLOSSY GIRL
coming to life
Here at GLOSSYBOX, we have long been fans of "It Girl" illustrator Dallas Shaw. Following her exceptionally beautiful Pinterest boards is an office-wide obsession! Her creativity continually served as daily inspiration for us. Dallas's artistic talent, personal style, and impeccable taste for all things "pretty and glamorous" perfectly align with GLOSSYBOX. So when we began to think about bringing the Glossy Girl to life through illustration we knew Dallas' signature style would be the perfect fit. The first time we met with Dallas, we talked and talked about the Glossy Girl, and found that we all had similar ideas about her. We saw her as worldly, mo-

dern and cultured; we knew she was warm, friendly and confident. Thanks to Dallas’ inspired vision, we introduce the Glossy Girl to the world. The Glossy Girl is a woman passionate about individual style and being her glossiest self. There’s a bit of her in you, and a bit of you in her.

PHOTOGRAPHY TREVER HOEHNE

rever Hoehne is a fashion photographer based in Southern California. He majored in painting in college and stumbled upon photography in his senior year, then spent years later honing his craft. For the GLOSSYBOX American Beauty shoot, Trever was the director, photographer and editor all in one, using his particular gifts to craft the best picture possible. "I really loved the creative freedom with this collaboration," said Trever, "All the elements came together so well. The vision for the collaboration was so clear and there was so much freedom for all of us to get creative." For treverhoehne.com
instance, for one of the shots, Trever rearranged part of the Oscar de la Renta studio to colorcoordinate with Dallas' dress. In another, hairstylist Sean Gallagher spontaneously played an acting role (while actually fixing Dallas' hair). "Sometimes collaborations can be tricky due to multiple art directors, different needs and agendas‌ that was not the case at all with this project. It was such a blast weaving these amazing companies together to create a really special collaboration," said Trever. Currently, he is in the process of collaborating on a short film and will be traveling to Paris for an editorial shoot next month.

HAIR Known for his seamless cuts and color, Sean Gallagher has been in the business of beauty for over 20 years. Sean has worked with master stylists Oribe, Denilo and Antonio Sardou, as well as colorists Rita Hazan and Daniel Galvin, achieving the superior skills needed to create his client's entire image. Even now, he continues to develop and perfect his craft by at-

tending advanced training forums by leading color companies such as Wella, Fromessi, Schwarzkopf, L'Oreal and Redken. His philosophy toward hair is similar to the way a fashion designer constructs a dress, from fabric to design, which is why he insists on doing both color and cut—he doesn't see a completed look until both are perfect.

One of the most magical aspects of
what I do is that the person brings life to my art while just being themselves.
Watching Sean Gallagher work, you immediately know that you're in the presence of a perfectionist. Throughout the American Beauty shoot, no hair was left out of place in his skilled, deft hands. He created two different hair looks to complement the makeup and dress, all while taking into consideration Dallas' personality. "I wanted to take the 'norm' and amplify and illustrate it," said Sean, "My inspiration comes through many avenues. Dallas herself is an inspiration with her love of fashion and her beautiful illustrations, and of course, the Oscar de la Renta dresses were a dream."
"
When asked what his favorite aspect of the shoot was, Sean praised the open and collaborative nature of the creative team, " The energy that happens when a group of talented people are happy to be working together really brings out the best in one another." He also said he found a new mentor in Dallas Shaw, "she is very smart and a marketing genius, possessing the rare quality of being able to balance being an artist and a businesswoman." Currently, Sean works at the Serge Normant Salon in the Meatpacking District of New York City.

"I loved when Dallas first saw the GLOSSYBOX she designed and was excited to see the fruits of her labor come

to life and it was captured on camera," said Dara, "my inspiration was Catherine Hepburn meets Brigitte Bardot meets Carrie Bradshaw." Iconic sophistication and easy sex appeal meets modern beauty. What's next for Dara? Inspired by the technique she uses when juggling with her two sons in the morning, she's working on a new mascara with a wand that's "like nothing on the market currently." We can't wait to see what she has in store.
Step-by-step instructions on how to achieve the Glossy Girl look:
HOW TO products to use:
SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel $74, Stila Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer $34, Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer $30; Fresh Here Comes The Sun Face Palette $47, Face Stockholm Cake Lliner $18, Lancome Hypose Drama Mascara $27, Kevyn Aucoin Pure Powder Glow Blush $37, YSL Rouge Volupte in Red Temptation $34
1
Begin by prepping the skin with a light moisturizer like SkinCeuticals B5 gel. Dara prefers gel to hydrate and prep skin without looking too dewy.
2
Apply Stila Tinted Moisturizer to correct and even out skin tone by working one direction one area at a time.
3
Correct any discoloration with Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage concealer, especially around the nose and under eyes, using a flat, synthetic concealer brush.
4
Set with a pressed powder mixed with a bronzer, like Fresh Here Comes the Sun for a warming effect to the skin.
5
Apply a matte pink base shadow all over the lid to brighten and correct the lid. Start from the lash line and work up to brow bone.
6
Line lash line for a dramatic cat eye with Face Stockholm Cake Lliner in Black.
7
Layer two coats of Lanc么me Hypnose Drama in Black on top lashes. Tap bottom lashes with a flat liner brush coated with mascara.
8
Dust apples of cheeks with Kevyn Aucoin Blush in Shadore.
9
Use YSL Rouge Volupte in either Sensual Silk, Fetish Pink, or Red Temptation for a hot red lip. Use a lip brush to create more of a smooth stain as opposed to a coat of product sitting on top of lip to avoid bleeding.
SUMMER HAIR "
T
he key to undoing months of sun damage is a simple weekly oil treat-
ment," says hair and scalp expert Philip B, who can help turn your dry, sun damaged hair into gorgeous owing locks in four simple steps.
Summer TIP
Apply Rejuvenating Oil to hair before a day at the beach or pool and follow steps 3 and 4 for a super soft blowout at night.
1. REJUVENATE. Apply Rejuvenating Hair Oil to dry hair. Finessing a small amount of a nut or plant based oil directly onto dry strands will instantly make hair look more alive with shine and softness.
TIP
Never apply oil to wet hair. Wet hair will reject the oil making it impossible to absorb into the hair shaft.
28 | www.glossybox.com/glossyboxmag
2. HEAT.
Heat hair with a blow dryer on medium heat. Using your fingertips, massage the oil throughout the dry strands from root to tip.
TIP
Concentrate on working the oil into the ends of your hair since it's harder for the natural oils produced by your scalp to reach it.
3. SHAMPOO. Apply a quarter sized amount of Peppermint Avocado Shampoo into hair. Add a little water, work into a lather and rinse with warm water.
4. CONDITION. Work in a small amount of conditioner, use Light-Weight Deep Conditioning Crème Rinse throughout hair.
TIP
TIP Do not rinse the oil out before shampooing. The oil and shampoo will work together to repair the driest strands.
A light conditioner will seal the hair cuticle and lock in the oil without leaving hair greasy or heavy.

Wedding box
What’s better than a classic American white wedding? Depending on the country you call home, you might be inclined to answer that a red, orange or gold wedding makes much more sense. Our GLOSSYBOX teams from around the world share their wedding traditions from home.
34 | www.glossybox.com/magazine
Photography by Marta Locklear martalocklearphoto.com Bride: Elizabeth Fuller
I
n Brazil, before the bride puts on her gown, each of the bridesmaids writes her name on a slip of paper and pins it inside the dress. According to superstition, they’ll have as much luck in love as the bride.
In the USA and the UK, brides are supposed to wear “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” for good luck. Taken together, these four items represent continuity, optimism for the future, borrowed happiness and purity, love and fidelity. In Japan, brides have three dresses to worry about. The first is a white shiromuko, a traditional gown passed down through generations that she’ll wear for the ceremony. Before the re-
ception, she’ll change into a red, gold and silver silk kimono, usually embroidered with a crane to symbolize long life. Right before the reception ends, she puts on a furisode, a style of kimono with wide sleeves worn by unmarried women. This tradition symbolizes the last time she’ll wear this dress. No matter where we are in the world and no matter what traditions we observe, when we celebrate a wedding, the most important thing we bring is love. The Wedding Box, filled with a trove of beauty treasures, would be the perfect keepsake for bridesmaids, friends and loved ones to commemorate your most special day, however you choose to celebrate it. The GLOSSYBOX Wedding Box will be available for sale July 2013.
