A DAY IN THE LIFE AT TIGI GlossyBox Magazine Beauty Editor Xiao Lim visited the TIGI Hair Academy in SoHo New York and met with Heath Grout, the US Creative Director for the past thirteen years. Heath's office was crammed with shelves filled with magazines old and new, with various cutouts of models and images on corkboards around the office, and beats constantly in the background. The entire atmosphere was buzzing with creativity. She glimpsed a peek of a feature he was editing for NYLON Magazine on his computer before settling down for a chat. Here is a day in the life of the TIGI US Creative Director:

GLOSSYBOXMAG: What do you do as the US Creative Director of Tigi? HEATH GROUT: Me, Thomas and Ricky [who make up the TIGI creative team] run the studio day to day, where there would be 10-40 licensed hair stylists coming in here for ongoing education. We offer an array of different courses: anything from basic education teaching our fundamentals to session courses. We do them by trend so for example, we'll concentrate on Spring trends when it's spring. I produce, shoot, and retouch all the shoots we do here. We shoot probably 6 days a month at least, depending what we have going on. There are also courses here every week. There's never a dull moment. GM: How do you constantly keep inspired? HG: We storyboard for every shoot we do, we are always storyboarding for our up and coming color collection or just for inspiration. We keep pictures around all the time. It's one of those things we always tell hairdressers who come here [for training]. You want to keep an ongoing mood and

portfolio behind the chair so you can surround yourself with the ongoing trends in the world. GM: What goes into planning any of your campaign shoots? HG: It's just like creating any kind of photoshoot. Because of the way we were taught, we always take into consideration individuality and face shape, skin tone, what people actually do in their day to day life, their lifestyle, how many looks they need out of it... We don't really manufacture looks. We do monthly meetings with the international creative team (3 based in NY, 9 globally). We push boundaries and come up with ideas of where we're going or what we're doing. We try to always stay ahead of the pace and create our own trends. GM: Best part of the job? HG: I work with great people and we have a great team. If you can have fun everyday and still do your job, listen to music while constantly trying to make new things, that's a great thing. The only reason it'll get dull is if you make it dull.

GLOSSYBOXMAG: What is your personal beauty philosophy? Products you could not live without? KATIE HOLMES: I like to keep it simple. When it comes to hair, great style should be sustainable. Using the right products means you don’t have work as hard to look and feel your best. GM: How do you keep your hair so shiny? KH: Alterna Bamboo Smooth Kendi Dry Oil Mist has transformed the texture of my hair! Not only do I love the light scent of it, but it has given me noticeably smoother, shinier hair. GM: And when you’re working a red carpet, what features do you like to play up? KH: Certainly my hair and I love a subtle smokey eye! GM: Do you have any tips on growing out a short haircut? KH: Try to use products with natural and organic ingredients and stay away from harsh chemicals like sulfates and parabens—like Alterna! This will keep it healthy and prevent breakage along the way.

GM: Which famous women are your beauty-icons? KH: I’ve always admired Lauren Hutton and Martha Graham for their natural, timeless beauty, and most importantly for embracing their individuality as independent women of their generation. Their impression is similar to one my mom—my true beauty icon—instilled in me early on, which is that the most radiating beauty comes from the inside out. It builds your character and will last beyond your years.

For the social media generation, image is key and Dallas Shaw knows exactly how to wield it. As an illustrator, her job is to make pretty things even prettier through flicks of her watercolor brushes. One of her most frequent clients is DKNY PR Girl (@dkny on Twitter), who prior to revealing her real identity behind the handle, relied on Dallas' illustrations to convey that distinct New York City girl persona we've come to know and love. Her work is also highly coveted throughout the fashion industry, seen through her enviable client list that includes Chanel, Kate Spade, Anthropologie, and many more. The less told story about Dallas is how she became who she is - and the simple answer is hard work and dedication. While she majored in illustration and worked as an artist at Walt Disney Studios after college, she didn't have friends or connections in the fashion industry. It is through sheer will of reaching out to complete strangers that she eventually got her artwork noticed and began to work with the companies and brands she admired. We love Dallas for her whimsical illustrations and keen eye for style, but mostly because she's a reminder that anything can happen if you want it badly enough. MAC Lipstick is a classic. I love “Chill,” a brownish, orange-red with a creamy, matte application. This is my go-to color for a dinner date. $15

I was afraid of wearing lipstick for a long time - until I found out you have to pick the right shade for your skin tone to make the color really pop. Your skin tone is determined by the underlying pigments in your skin, not its shade, so to figure yours out, take two swatches of lipstick, one in pink and one in orange, and rub different colors on each cheek. In front of a mirror in a well-lit room, compare the colors. If the pink looks more natural on you, then you have a cool skin tone. If the orange looks better, your skin tone is warm. So how do you translate this into choosing a lipstick color? If you have a cool skin tone, choose rich colors, like reds with blue and purple undertones, raspberry, and plums. If you have a warm skin tone, you'll look best in autumnal colors like orange-tinged reds, brown and gold or light peach, apricot and honey.
