t comes suddenly. One morning, you bundle up, brace yourself, and walk out the door, just as you've done for four bone-chilling months. While new pairs of Rag and Bone boots and a boho-chic Eugenia Kim hat help make for a stylish look, there's no denying it – winter can be a drag. But not today – today the birds sing and the sun feels warm and kind. Christina Rossetti said spring is when life's alive in everything. It's about awakenings, fresh starts, and new perspectives. This month, we asked our favorite beauty experts for advice on how to revamp and renew our look, as well as an insider’s perspective on what it takes to get red carpet ready. Then, we rooted through the shelves of French pharmacies for exciting new skincare products to try. Plus we'd like to introduce our glossy crush, Chiara Ferragni of the Blonde Salad, whose playful yet chic look is the perfect spring style inspiration.

BEAUTY BANTER EXPERT ADVICE Have you ever wondered what it takes for celebrities to get red-carpet ready? Turns out it’s a full day’s worth of work (and when it comes to skin prep, weeks) with many helping hands. We interviewed three of Hollywood’s best magic makers to get the scoop on how to achieve red carpet worthy hair, makeup, and skin. We also asked them to recommend their favorite products to update our look for spring. There’s plenty to learn, including how a celebrity freaks out about skin before her big day. Ah, famous people, they’re just like us after all.

HAIR

ADIR ABERGEL "I think since most designers are so young now we are going to see a big resurgence of 90s hair, as this is a big reference point for them. Minimalism and unfussy textures will dominate - think Kate Moss. Low slung ponytails, middle parts and naturally enhanced textures. Cropped short cuts are very much in, think Stella Tennant in the early 90s." 6 | www.glossybox.com/magazine

Beauty Banter GLOSSYBOX MAG: How did you go about choosing a hairstyle for a celebrity for a major red carpet event? ADIR ABERGEL: I listen, observe and communicate. There are a lot of moving parts. The dress, the jewelry, the makeup, the nails, you need to understand all that is being considered before you put forward a recommendation for a look. I also do research in advance and bring a lot of inspiration and reference photos to share with my clients before the big night. GM: We love the red carpet looks you create; do you have any secrets for achieving that effortless, glamorous hair? AA: I believe in every job that is creative, there is a collaborative effort. I want to make sure that hair never overpowers the woman and that the woman always shines through. The product should enhance movement and bounce. After all, shine signiJEFF KRAVITZ / FILM MAGIC fies youth, while body and movement create sexuality. GM: How is celebrity hairstyling different than regular hair styling? AA: Sometimes you only have 30 minutes to create an amazing red carpet look that will be seen all over the world. You have to work simultaneously with the stylist and makeup artist to make sure that the look reflects that person’s public identity and takes into account the total picture. You want to make sure when your client hits that red carpet , she looks and feels her most beautiful.

GM: What are some of the most memorable red carpet hairstyles that you created? AA: I work with Anne Hathaway frequently. When she hosted the Academy Awards several years ago, I created seven different looks throughout the night. It was unprecedented and intense but really exciting! I also loved the super modern sleek ponytail I created for Gwyneth Paltrow last year when she wore that white Tom Ford Dress. This year for the Oscars, I am working with Jen Garner and Anne Hathaway who is nominated for Les Misérables [editor's note: and won!] I am so excited for the looks we will create together! GM: Do you have any favorite Hollywood hair icons? AA: Brigitte Bardot, One of the sexiest women of the 60s. Her signature voluminous halfup half-down hairstyle paired with loose waves remains an iconic hairstyle still relevant today. Grace Kelly, upheld as a standard of beauty, grace, and style. Ultra-feminine and glamorous, her slicked-back curls still remain a standout style that continues to be reinterpreted still today. Catherine Deneuve, The original ingénue, always mysterious and always sultry. She has been the muse of all muses to fashion designers. Her bombshell bedroom hair will always be one of my all-time favorite looks. GM: How would you describe your signature hair look? AA: Undone glamour. My style of hair celebrates the woman and gives her a look that she can live in while feeling sexy and confident.

MAKE UP

MAI QUYNH "For spring, play with brighter lips, metallic copper eyes, wine-colored, or colorful eyeshadows. Bright eyeshadows are really fun and I'm excited that I will be able to incorporate them on the red carpet."

8 | www.glossybox.com/magazine

Beauty Banter

GLOSSYBOX MAG: How do you determine what look you will do for a particular celebrity on the red carpet? Do you call the shots, or is it more of a collaborative effort? MAI QUYNH: It's definitely a collaboration between the stylist, the hair stylist, me, and the actress. The thing with red carpet is that usually I'll be applying makeup on an actress – actresses are not models. Models usually let you do whatever you want to them makeup-wise because it's their job. Actresses have a say because it should be whatever they feel comfortable with. They're going as themselves, not a character they're playing. And because they're going to have their photos taken, they have to be comfortable with how they look at the end. GM: What do celebrities usually request for the red carpet? MQ: I would say most request to play up the eyes. A lot of women like smoky eyes or a winged eyeliner. Lashes are also key to adding a little bit of dramatic effect for the eyes and making them look more polished for the red carpet. GM: What are your five must-have products this spring? MQ: I was recently introduced to these products and I'm really excited to add them to my kit: tarte lipsurgence lip tint. They have different textures but I really like the matte lip tint. It looks like a

chubby stick with a sheer, matte formula, so it's great because there's color, but it looks almost like your natural lip color when applied. YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain. This definitely stains! I put it on the back of my hand to test the color once and they really stay on. They have these in amazing colors. The texture is shiny but not sticky, which I love. You apply it with this doe-foot applicator but it's really flat and wide so it's really easy to apply. It's a great alternative to lip gloss. Chanel Perfection Lumiere Foundation. I really like the way this seals on a person's skin. It has a nice, satin finish; not too matte or heavy since it's medium coverage. Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette. I really like their eyeshadows since they're soft, but go on pigmented and blends easily. Their palettes come in an enormous range of colors – they have beautiful smoky grays, neutrals, brown, coppers, and brights. Laura Mercier Caviar Stick. These are basically cream eyeshadows in stick form, and they make so many colors! You can find one to use as a highlighter or all over lids to create a smudgy, smoky eye. They're nice to layer with because the texture is creamy but is also slightly shimmery. It looks really good when you apply powder eyeshadow over it because the shimmers will come through and create a really nice effect on your eyes.

SKIN CARE

KATE SOMERVILLE "It’s important to understand that there are an infinite number of skin types and combinations. While a few of us have very balanced complexions, most of us don’t. It can be calm and clear on the forehead, dry and patchy on the cheeks and broken out on the chin. There are also those whose skin actually changes on a regular basis or over the course of a few months. This is why you should get to know your own skin, inside and out. The more connected you are to what’s going on, the better you can care for your skin now and throughout the years." 10 | www.glossybox.com/magazine

Beauty Banter

GLOSSYBOX MAG: What kind of treatments do you give to celebrities pre-red carpet? KATE SOMERVILLE: In order to achieve great skin, it’s important that we get to know our clients’ skin inside and out. Many of our clients work with their estheticians to determine a plan for their skin, particularly in advance of a big event. Of course, there are always last-minute appointments, which is why DermalQuench Oxygen Treatment is so great. The treatment is particularly popular with celebrities because there is no downtime and it ups the hydration level in their skin, keeping it supple, smooth and dewy. GM: Have you ever had to deal with a red carpet emergency? We won't ask you to name names, but we would love to get a sense of what it is and how you fixed it! KS: I had a celebrity call me one morning in a panic because she used a different eye cream (not mine!) the night before a big event. When she woke up, her eyes were swollen, puffy, red, irritated, and itchy. To be honest, there is not a whole lot you can do to completely rid the reaction, but to help, I told her to take an antihistamine to reduce the swelling and to place cotton balls soaked in ice water on the eyes. My advice is to never try a new procedure or treatment or use a new product right before a big occasion. You don’t know how your skin is going to react.

GM: What advice can you give to our readers about taking care of their skin by themselves at home? KS: Exfoliate, hydrate, and moisturize for a great complexion. GM: Could you give us advice on how to update our skincare routines as we move into spring? KS: It’s important to tweak your regimen according to the time of year. As we move into the warmer months, it’s more about protective products and ingredients like vitamin C serums that defend you against freeradical damage. Your regimen should be to hydrate with light moisturizers, exfoliate, and use sunscreen and self-tanners. GM: Let's talk personal! What are your absolute favorite products in your kit/on your vanity? KS: I can’t live without ExfoliKate to instantly make my skin soft and glowing, DemalQuench LiquidLift for its incredible hydration, Deep Tissue Repair Cream with Peptide K8 to seal in that hydration, Somerville360 face and body for tanning and now my new RetAsphere 2-in-1 Retinol Night Cream as a non-irritating retinol. I also love Curel, the Mach 3 razor, Close Up Toothpaste and L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Mascara with the curved brush. One of my favorite forms of sun protection is mineral makeup. I use the Jane Iredale brand; Jane pioneered the concept, but there are many other good ones out there, including Bare Escentuals. I also love Chanel lip gloss.

BLONDE SALAD 12 | www.glossybox.com/magazine

Those who are skeptical of the power of the blog need only to take a look at The Blonde Salad to silence their doubts. Founded by the gorgeous Chiara Ferragni in October 2009, what started out as a space to recommend outfits to her readers quickly became a massive Internet sensation, now receiving over 12 million views per month. In a short span of three years, Chiara has established herself firmly in the fashion blogging elite, attending fashion week around the world alongside front row stalwarts BryanBoy, Fashion Toast, and Susie Bubble, and has collaborated with esteemed luxury brands such as Bottega Veneta, Dior, Burberry, YSL, and Tod's. She has also been featured in a slew of publications, such as Teen Vogue, Italian Vogue, and L'Officiel Italia, all while juggling her classes as a law student at Bocconi University. What we love most about Chiara is her attention to detail – the meticulous rollup of a sleeve, choice of matching (or mismatching) colors, textures, and accessories – yet, her outfits never seem premeditated. This extends over to her grasp on beauty, where her go-to looks are smoky eyes rimmed to perfection, or a bare face with a red lip painted on with pinpoint precision. She looks pulled together whether in just-out-of-bed hair or messy braids; it's no wonder hair giant Redken recently tapped her to be their global fashion ambassador. This 25-year-old has style on her fingertips and the world beneath her feet. Follow her journey on theblondesalad.com and be prepared to get inspired.

The hair artists at Moroccanoil complemented the collection with girls crowned in milkmaid braids, while Sarah Lucero from Stila Cosmetics painted on glowing complexions, softly smoked eyes, and wine-stained lips.

GET THE LOOK: MARA HOFFMAN

The Sebastian Professional Stylist Design Team led by Thomas Dunkin styled the models’ hair backstage at Mara Hoffman’s spring 2013 New York Fashion Week runway show. Mara Hoffman’s designs from this collection were inspired by the word “aloha” - from the origin of peace in its meaning, to the spirit of the Hawaiian islands that it represents. The collection portrays the vibrant colors and spirit of island culture. To complement the collection, the Sebastian Professional Stylist Design Team created textured, free-flowing tresses reminiscent of days in the Hawaiian tropics, and used colorful island leaves to pin the hair back and embellish the style.

MAC Myth is a perennial favorite. I have tried many lip products, but I always come back to this one, so much so that I consider it my signature shade.

MSCHIC is a young and innovative Finnish company founded in 2007. I found their lip liners to be highly pigmented and I love using it to accentuate my nude lip look.

BYREDO is a Stockholm-based fragrance house founded in 2006 by Ben Gorham. This particular scent is limited edition, so I only wear it on special occasions.

After extensive testing, I finally found a mascara that I am happy with. I go for a sharp look, which is why I focus on my eyes. The name of this product says it all.

This fresh and feminine fragrance is essentially based on the scent of roses. I use it with the corresponding perfume to intensify its effect during the day.

For evening, I use the seductive Chanel Coco Noir. It opens with the light base notes of grapefruit and bergamot, later giving way to the warm, irresistible scent of patchouli and sandalwood.

I really love creamy and smooth lipsticks, which is why I adore all the Rouge Volupté lipsticks from YSL. My favorite color for this spring is 29 Opera Rose because it’s perfect for light day makeup.

This highlighter creates the perfect finish for your makeup. I use it on my cheeks, in the inner corners of my eyes as well as above the eyelids. It's my personal must have for March!

GEMS FROM THE

PHARMACY: FRENCH EDITION Forget the beauty level of a department store, oft times the best beauty products can be found on the shelves of your local pharmacy. This month, we rummage through the pharmacies of France in search of beauty treasures. French girls are known for their chic and classic, effortless beauty, and some of that must be due to the fantastic products readily available to them. The keyword to French beauty, it seems, is multi-purpose.

Global Spotlight FRANCE

Avène Thermal Water This facial spray soothes dry skin and helps set makeup. Pro tip: spray this on before applying your regular lotion. It will give your skin an additional moisture boost!

Bioderma Sensibio H20 Micelle Solution French girls swear by their Bioderma cleansing waters because it removes water-resistant makeup and gently cleanses the face in the process.

Klorane Dry Shampoo Dry shampoo is now a staple in every beauty lover's cabinet, but until a few years ago it was a rare sight. Klorane created one of the originals, which still remains as one of the best for instant hair revitalization.

Caudalie Beauty Elixir Think of this as a mojito in a handy spritz bottle. The liquid gives you a minty tingle and works as a refresher while providing moisture – perfect for hot summer days, or lazy mornings when you just need a little extra to wake up.

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè Makeup artists all swear by this cream, and we can see why. It is rich, absorbs quickly, works as a makeup primer, and also a makeup remover. This is multi-purpose at its finest.

Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse While the idea of putting oil on skin is still met with resistance in the United States, the French have long embraced its benefits – multifunction lightweight moisture accompanied by an aromatic scent. Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse is the perennial favorite when it comes to dry oils, and lucky us, is now available at select local pharmacies. www.glossybox.com/magazine | 25
