heltenham Science Festival is back in all its live splendour, with a host of exciting activities for families and children. Wonder at galaxies far, far away with Star Wars expert Jon Chase, and learn about the super science behind everyone’s favourite superheroes in ‘The Science of Superheroes’. BBC One Show’s Marty Jopson presents his electrifying show ‘One Million Volts’ while Stefan Gates and his robot cat/dog
Free interactive zones MakerShack: code a robot, try out a virtual reality headset, discover curious squidgy stuff, and celebrate all things material with expert makers, crafters, scientists and engineers. The Arcade: fun, creative and cryptic challenges exploring the cyber world. Discover Zone: find out about the incredible technology transforming our planet. There are even more free activities to explore in the GE Pavilion, the Hartpury Science Hub, the Woodland Trust’s Nature Detectives and a Science Trail.

Clank reveals the weird and wonderful science behind our favourite furry friends in ‘Dogology vs Catology’. Oceanographer Russell Arnott reveals the fascinating world of marine chemistry and goes head-to-head with marine biologist Claudia Allen in a fact-battle to decide who’s best in ‘Shark vs Whale’. ‘Bake-Off’ finalist Andrew Smyth demos his “bakineering” skills and Jamie Gallagher explores the scientific playground of ‘Kitchen Chemistry’. Comedy and quantum mechanics combine in ‘The Quantum Qrumpet’ presented by ANTS Theatre. Free events on the Apollo stage for all ages include festival guest curator Alom Shaha transforming household objects into homemade toys, a drawing workshop with ‘BLOBFISH!’ author Olaf Falafel, demonstra-
tions and explosive experiments from Science Made Simple, juggling and circus skills
with a science theme, and fun forensics with Diatom Dave.
