loucestershire families anticipating the reopening of indoor visitor attractions will be excited to hear that The Museum of Gloucester opens its doors in time for May half term. Children will be engaged by new fun arts and crafts activity packs, while parents will discover a thought-provoking exhibition in the Community Gallery co-curated by Gloucester-based lyricist, poet and MC Rider Shafique. The show aims to put the ‘unity’ back in the word ‘community’ and is an opportunity to see and hear the people of Gloucester in all their diversity through photography and film. According to the museum, the exhibition aims to represent and empower the city’s communities, giving visitors the chance to think about and respond to questions like
“what is community?”, “who are you?” and “what do you love?” The following month, from Sunday 26 June, the museum also hosts ‘The Wonderful World of the Ladybird Book Artists’, an exhibition celebrating the talents behind the amazing success of Ladybird Books, a staple of primary-aged learning for at least two decades in the mid20th century, since they first appeared in their most well-known form some 80 years ago. Expect a colourful array of books, original artwork and artefacts from the series that brought the world everything from classic fairy tales and the Janet & John reading books to ‘The Story of Furniture’ and ‘Animals, Birds and Plants of the Bible’. Cats in hats are back... with flowers! Wear A Hat Day with Flowers 2021 returns by popular demand this June. As Covid-19 restrictions continue to ease, Wear A Hat Day with Flowers is the perfect way to bring your loved ones together and celebrate, while raising funds to help find a cure for brain tumours. Last year, the inaugural Wear A Hat Day with Flowers raised over £40,000 to support this vital work. Friday 18 June promises to be another blooming brilliant day of floral hatty fun, helping raise even more. Supporting the event again is BBC TV’s ‘Instant Gardener’ Danny Clarke, who understands the pain of a brain tumour diagnosis having lost his sister Margot to a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Plan your own fun floral hatty events at school or work and in the wider community, and spread some joy while raising lots of money to help fund the fight. Register today on the website and have immediate access to a digital fundraising pack containing downloadable posters, top tips and event ideas to maximise your fundraising. Rock and roam! Farm park reopens with new quarry attraction for children
Imagine receiving your own personalised postcard from outer space! Well, now an experience almost as exciting is possible thanks to a new series of science-inspired resources, the first of which is PostcardsFromSpace. Friendly junior astronaut Tanno and spacedog Iguda will send your child a personalised postcard about their adventures through the solar system every week for 12 weeks. This unique idea, the brainchild of Miles Hudson, PGCE physics tutor at Newcastle University, delivers fun, exciting science knowledge through your letterbox, just like any holiday postcard. There are facts and figures, of course, but the real fun and enthusiasm comes through in the adventures that Tanno and Iguda have on their travels. Learning the size and surface temperature of Pluto is one thing, but what would it actually be like to walk on the frozen surface? The set of twelve A5 cards is ideal for 8 to 12 year olds and deliberately extends beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum to offer greater depth and breadth of learning. The educational element is enhanced with a link to a special webpage for each card’s location. These webpages include a range of additional information, animations, videos and activities for children to develop their interest and fun even further. Hudson also posts a Space Fact of the Day, every day, on the PostcardsFromSpace Facebook page. PostcardsFromDeepSpace have recently been published, and PostcardsFromVolcanoes are coming soon. The team at Cotswold Farm Park is so excited to welcome visitors through its gates once more. To make the experience at the Gloucestershire family farm owned by BBC’s ‘Countryfile’ presenter Adam Henson even more special, it has been working hard to upgrade the play equipment and prepare the barns for re-opening. The first play installation, based on a “quarry” theme, is now ready to use and has been enjoyed by hundreds of visitors already. The equipment, supplied by manufacturers Richter Spielgeräte AU and Timberplay Ltd, allows children to lift stones in buckets, tow them across the playground via pulleys and climb up and down the frame. This has been a very exciting project for the Cotswold Farm Park team and they are sure you will love the outcome just as much as they do! The farm park’s animal barns have now re-opened, and are filled with all your favourite animals including piglets, lambs and goat kids, rabbits, chicks and guinea pigs. The animals are available to pet and feed and they are also excited to meet both returning and new visitors. As always, the Cotswold Farm Park team is keeping up with all the Covid-19 guidance, providing handwashing, hand-sanitiser and implementing social distancing and masks indoors in order to keep visitors safe.
