As a teenager, Ming fought valiantly to escape one of history's darkest eras - China's Cultural Revolution - during which millions of innocent youth were deported to remote areas to face a life sentence of poverty and hard labor. He eventually made his way to the U.S. with $50 in his pocket, where against all odds, he later earned a PhD in laser la physics and graduated with the highest honors from Harvard Medical School and MIT. To date, Dr. Wang has performed over 55,000 eye procedures including on over 4,000 physicians. He has published 9 textbooks, holds several U.S. patents, and performed the world’s rst laser artiicial cornea implantation. Dr. Wang is currently the only surgeon in the state who performs 3D SMILE and 3D LASIK (18+), 3D Implantable Contact Lens (21+), 3D Forever Im Young Lens (45+), and 3D Laser Cataract Surgery (60+). He established a non-proot charity, which to date has helped patients from over 40 states in the U.S. and 55 countries, with all sight restoration surgeries performed free-of-charge.

W

hen Disney Theatrical Group introduced Disney Musicals in Schools to Nashville in 2011, the idea of it involving more than a thousand Tennessee students in its musical theatre program was like wishing upon a star.

But last year, more than 1,300 students in 30 under-resourced schools in Davidson and Bedford counties, at no cost to the students or schools, took their favorite Disney stories from the screen to the stage.

This school year’s theatrical reach is even bigger.

Through additional rural expansion, elementary and middle schools in Coffee and Cumberland counties will join the fun with 17-week musical theatre residencies at their schools.

TPAC awarded a $25,000 grant to Cumberland County Playhouse in Crossville, which will select one public elementary school to participate this year and another in 2020-2021. Also participating will be North Coffee Elementary School in Manchester.

“I believe the arts can positively affect the entire school culture, especially student motivation, attitudes, and attendance,” says Weslie Webster, education director at the Cumberland County Playhouse. “It fosters student expression of feelings and emotions. Expressive kids are happier kids, and happier kids find learning more enjoyable.”

All participating schools receive performance rights for the Disney KIDS or Disney JR. musical of their choice, along with educational support materials and guidance from professional teaching artists trained by TPAC. Over the course of three years, TPAC works with the schools to establish a theatre program they can sustain. Meanwhile, students gain a variety of skills necessary to produce theatre, including critical thinking, problem solving, ensemble building, and interpersonal communication.

“I have seen several students grow in their selfconfidence,” says Bryana Guerin, a teacher at

Learning Way Elementary School in Shelbyville.

“I have seen pure joy on their faces when they finally nail a song or dance move they had been struggling with. This process also has helped students make new friends they might not have hung out with otherwise.”

Students aren’t the only ones getting in on the fun.

A professional development focus for teachers includes partnering them with professional teaching artists to learn how to produce, direct, and choreograph theatre at their schools.

“I’ve heard the phrase ‘walking on air’ my whole life but have never experienced that feeling personally until I watched my students perform,” says Sherry Littley, a teacher at Nashville’s Charlotte Park Elementary.

Disney KIDS musicals are 30-minute performances that have been adapted from classic Disney films such as 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, The Aristocats, Frozen, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, and Winnie the Pooh.

As a capstone, students from first-year schools will perform one number from their show for fellow students, teachers, family, and more at the Student Share Celebration in TPAC’s Jackson Hall.

Disney Musicals in Schools launched in 2010 to help under-resourced public elementary schools not getting equitable access to the arts. After offering the program in New York City, Disney Theatrical Group piloted the program in Nashville the following year and has since expanded to other cities.

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (Composer) is the composer of some of the world’s best known musicals including CATS, Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Phantom of the Opera (which celebrated its 30th anniversary on Broadway this year) and Sunset Boulevard. When Sunset Boulevard joined School of Rock – The Musical, CATS and Phantom on Broadway in February 2017 he became the only person to equal the record set in 1953 by Rodgers and Hammerstein with four shows running concurrently. As well as The Phantom Of The Opera and CATS his productions include the groundbreaking Bombay Dreams which introduced the double Oscar winning Bollywood composer AR Rahman to the Western stage. As a composer and producer, Lloyd Webber is one of an elite group of artists to have achieved EGOT status by receiving an Emmy, four Grammys including Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Requiem, his setting of the Latin Requiem mass, an Oscar and eight Tony Awards including the 2018 Special Tony for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. Additionally he has been honored with seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, the Praemium Imperiale, the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre, a BASCA Fellowship, and the Kennedy Center Honor. He owns seven London theatres including the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and the London Palladium. He is passionate about the importance of music in education and the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has become one of Britain’s leading charities supporting the arts and music. In 2016 the Foundation funded a major new national initiative which endowed the American Theatre Wing with a $1.3 million, three-year grant to support theatre education opportunities for underserved young people and public schools across the U.S. He was knighted by Her Majesty The Queen in 1992 and created a life peer in 1997. To mark his 70th birthday, his bestselling autobiography Unmasked was published

THOMAS STEARNS ELIOT (Poet & Lyricist) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 26, 1888. He was educated at Harvard, the Sorbonne in Paris and Merton College, Oxford. He settled in England in 1915 and taught briefly at two schools before joining Lloyds Bank in the city of London. His first volume of poems, Prufrock and Other Observations, was published in 1917. The Waste Land, his most famous work, was first published in 1922. In 1925 he left the bank to become a director of the publishing house of Faber. There have been several individual and collected editions of his poetry, as well as volumes of his literary and social criticism; he also wrote a number of verse plays, including Murder in the Cathedral, which was commissioned for the Canterbury Festival of 1935. T.S. Eliot had a great affection for cats, and “Possum” was his alias among his friends. Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats appeared in October 1939 and was the basis for CATS. He received many honors and distinctions, among them the Order of Merit and the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Eliot died in January 1965 and was posthumously awarded the 1983 Tony Award for the book of CATS. TREVOR NUNN (Director) From 1968 to 1986, he was the youngest-ever artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, directing more than 30 productions, from classics to new works including Nicholas Nickleby and Les Misérables. He was later director of the National Theatre, where award-winning productions included Not About Nightingales, Troilus and Cressida, Oklahoma!, The Merchant of Venice, Summerfolk, My Fair Lady, A Streetcar Named Desire, Anything Goes and Love’s Labour’s Lost. Gillian’s iconic work on CATS and Phantom has been seen and enjoyed by millions worldwide along with her direction of the television programs A Simple Man and Le Morte D’Arthur (both BBC). Her “White Cat” solo was honored by the American Dance Machine in 2015. Her husband, the actor Peter Land proudly oversees her legacy.

ANDY BLANKENBUEHLER (Choreographer) Mr. Blankenbuehler is three-time Tony Award winner for his choreography in the Broadway productions of Bandstand, In The Heights and Hamilton for which he also received London’s Olivier Award.

The recent production of Bandstand (director/choreographer) also received the Drama Desk and Chita Rivera Award for Best Choreography.

Other Broadway credits include Bring It On, 9 To 5, The People In The Picture, The Apple Tree, Annie, and the recent revival of CATS. Upcoming theatre projects include the new musical Only Gold with British singer/songwriter Kate Nash and the musical Five Points. On television, Mr. Blankenbuehler’s work has been seen most recently on the Emmy Award winning FX series “Fosse/ Verdon,” and his choreography will be seen in the upcoming Universal Studio film of the musical Cats.

Andy is very proud to have made his concert debut earlier this year with a piece entitled Remember Our Song for the Tulsa Ballet Company. As a performer, Mr. Blankenbuehler has danced on Broadway in Fosse, Contact, Man of La Mancha, Saturday Night Fever, Steel Pier, Big and Guys and Dolls. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Mr. Blankenbuehler resides in New York City, with his wife Elly and two children, Luca and Sofia. Mr. Blankenbuehler is a recipient of a special 2015 Drama Desk Award for his achievement in the theatre. Mr. Blankenbuehler received the 2018 Kennedy Center Honors for his work on the musical Hamilton.

KRISTEN BLODGETTE (Music Supervisor) was associate musical supervisor for CATS (original Broadway, tours, Copenhagen) and musical supervisor/conductor for the Broadway revival. She has been the associate musical supervisor for The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway since 1988 and supervised 15 subsequent companies of Phantom worldwide. She served as musical supervisor for Love Never Dies in Hamburg and the National Tour. agic carpet ride? Check. Wish-granting Genie? Check. Evil sorcerer? Check.

Alluring princess? Check.

Aladdin and His Winter Wish, playing TPAC December 12-22, checks all the boxes of the children's classic we know and love.

But this is not the same story of a street rat's rise to royalty — this is a holiday panto, a British tradition dating back 350 years when townspeople would put on a show as a Christmas present for kids.

"Every city, every town, every village does an amateur and a professional panto every holiday. So, you have to be careful which one you go to," jokes Kris Lythgoe of Lythgoe Family Give Kids Panto. "Panto’s a vehicle that introduces kids to live theater for the first time."

The creative force behind American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, the Lythgoe family takes pride in bringing the tradition across the pond and offering affordable and interactive theatre to American families.

They give an age-old fairy tale a modern twist with comedy, dance, and contemporary songs interwoven into the script — from Ray Charles to Bruno Mars. Each production is also localized for the city in which it’s performed.

The story follows Aladdin, who meets and falls in love with the Princess with the help of his magical Genie. When she is taken by the evil magician Abanazar, Aladdin must defeat the evil magician and make his wishes come true.

Also, the cast intentionally blends big names with local talent.

Gillespie (Broadway’s Newsies, Aladdin, NBC’s Rise) as Aladdin, Richard Karn (Home Improvement) as the hypnotism-prone Sultan, Bruce Vilanch (Emmy Award-winning TV comedy writer and actor of Hairspray, Hollywood Squares) as Widow Twanky, Josh Adamson (ABC Family’s First Landing) as Abanazar, Jonathan Meza (The Familiar of Zero, Nickelodeon’s The Jumpitz) as Wishee Washee and star Mykal Kilgore (off-Broadway’s Songs for a New World, NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live) as the Genie.

Accessible Services at Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) include parking, elevators, wheelchair seating, use of a TPAC wheelchair, designated restrooms, and services for patrons with limited hearing and vision. Infrared assisted listening devices are available at no charge at the entrance to each theater. TPAC offers American Sign Language, Open Captioning, Audio Description, and Braille programs on the Sunday matinee in the HCA Healthcare / TriStar Health Broadway at TPAC season. Large print programs are available for Broadway at TPAC shows.

An ATM is on G-Level, near the security desk at the Deaderick Street entrance to the building.
