It didn’t take long after the opening of our Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Center for its impact to be felt across the community and even further. Yes, it was a milestone as a significant teaching facility, but even more important was that it represented our continued move in recent years into the research arena. In fact, the College of Pharmacy just received the university’s first National Institutes of Health grant for research over the next five years which could impact breast cancer treatment.
Impressive recognition for a university of our size. But not surprising, given our commitment to creating far-reaching science and health sciences programs with a mission to benefit others. From our highly ranked pharmacy and nursing schools to a new master’s in pharmacy informatics and a developing physician’s assistance program, we’re strengthening our longtime reputation for graduating students who academically and spiritually have what it takes to make a difference.
For the first time, our pharmaceutical research is being taken for granted.

BASSIST KEVIN JABLONSKI PLAYS FAMOUS INSTRUMENT
L
ast month, Nashville Symphony bassist Kevin Jablonski performed a solo recital at Second Presbyterian Church on one of the most famous basses in existence, the Karr-Koussevitzky bass, which was owned by both Gary Karr and Serge Koussevitzky. Here’s what he had to say about the instrument and his recital. “The bass was thought to have been made at the end of the 18th century in France, and Koussevitzky purchased it there in 1901. Shortly thereafter, Koussevitzky went to Berlin to study conducting (which of course would lead to his great tenure as conductor of the Boston Symphony), and it was there where he met fellow conducting student Reinhold Gliere. They formed a friendship, and Gliere ended up writing four pieces for bass and piano, dedicating some of them to Koussevitzky. “Around the same time, Koussevitzky wrote his own collection of four pieces for bass and piano, and I’m incredibly excited that I got to perform

these pieces, as Koussevitzky would doubtlessly have been composing and playing both these pieces on the very instrument. “In 1962, Serge’s widow, Olga, heard the New York debut recital of rising double bassist Gary Karr. Olga saw the ghost of her husband embrace Gary during the recital and was moved to give Serge’s bass to him as a gift. After an unparalleled career forging new territory by showcasing the bass as a solo instrument and inspiring countless other bassists along the way, Gary gave his last public recital at the International Society of Bassists (ISB) convention in 2001. I was fortunate enough to be in attendance that night, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. Gary’s playing was incredible, and I remember the tone of the instrument was like nothing I’d ever heard before. “Three years later, Gary generously donated his bass to the ISB, a society he actually founded, so that bassists around the world would be able to see, hear and play the iconic instrument. Its slow tour across the world brought it to Nashville for a little while, and I’m truly honored to have had the opportunity to perform on it in concert.” Adapted from the Musicians of the Nashville Symphony Newsletter. ABOUT THE ARTIST After selling more than 15 million albums, scoring 28 No. 1 hits, and earning three GRAMMY® Awards and more than 40 Dove Awards, no one would blame Michael W. Smith if he decided to coast just a little bit, but that’s just not in his nature. On Sovereign, Smith’s first worship album since 2008 and his first project since signing with Capitol Christian Music Group in 2013, he deliberately steps into a new creative chapter to craft a vibrant collection of vertically focused songs with a fresh sense of musical innovation. Smith has always had a gift for delivering songs that capture the hearts of listeners and give voice to their thoughts and feelings. During his three-decade career, the Kenova, West Virginia, native has shaped the Christian music landscape
with such classic songs as “Friends,” which was named the No. 1 Song of All Time by CCM Magazine and “Healing Rain,” a powerful anthem that remains one of the best-loved songs in his extensive repertoire. In approaching this new chapter in his career, Smith had the desire to creatively push himself, and there’s a sense of musical adventure that permeates the songs on Sovereign. Prior to recording the album, he toured the world extensively, sharing the gospel in such remote locales as Bahrain, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Abu Dhabi. Whether sharing the gospel on foreign soil or mentoring artists that seek his counsel on balancing family and music, Smith has long had a passion for serving God and serving others.

THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER SWINGS CHRISTMAS Cheryl Bentyne, vocals Alan Paul, vocals Janis Siegel, vocals Trist Curless, vocals Yaron Gershovsky, music director, piano & keyboards Steve Hass, drums Gary Wicks, bass Adam Hawley, guitar Selections to be announced from the stage. Official Partner
ABOUT THE ARTISTS It’s been nearly 35 years since Tim Hauser, a former Madison Avenue marketing executive, paid his bills by driving a New York City cab while aspiring to form a harmony vocal quartet. He’d been in doo-wop groups, folk groups and even in a short-lived quintet named The Manhattan Transfer, but as the sounds of jazz, R&B, pop, rock ’n’ roll, salsa and swing poured out of brownstones, Hauser dreamt of four-part harmonies without limits. In the fall of 1972, Hauser’s taxi fare was an aspiring young singer named Laurel Massé, who was looking to form a group. A few weeks later, another of Hauser’s fares invited him to a party where he met Brooklyn native Janis Siegel, who before long became the third member of The Manhattan Transfer. As Hauser, Massé and Siegel began rehearsing, Massé’s then-boyfriend introduced Hauser and Siegel to Alan Paul, who was co-starring in the original production of Grease. The rest, as they say, is history.
Signed to Atlantic Records by Ahmet Ertegun, the group released their self-titled debut in 1975; the second single from the album, a remake of the Friendly Brothers gospel classic “Operator,” gave the group their first national hit. As “Operator” rose up the charts, the group was invited to make guest appearances on various variety shows and television specials. Hollywood took notice, and the band was tapped to helm a weekly hour-long summer replacement comedyvariety show. The Manhattan Transfer show premiered on August 10, 1975, in CBS’ old Ed Sullivan time slot, Sunday nights at 8 p.m. Despite censors restricting performances of some of their more risqué songs, the band still managed to do some wonderful things, including featuring Bob Marley and the Wailers in their first U.S. television appearance. In 1978, Massé was injured in a car accident and decided not to rejoin the group. One of many who auditioned for her slot was Cheryl Bentyne,

a stunning singer from Mt. Vernon, Washington. At her dazzling audition, the other Manhattan Transfer members immediately felt her impact and invited her to join. In 1981, Manhattan Transfer became the first group ever to win GRAMMY® Awards in both Pop and Jazz categories in the same year — Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for “Boy From New York City,” and Best Jazz Performance, Duo or Group for “Until I Met You (Corner Pocket),” both from their fifth studio LP, Mecca for Moderns. The critical praise and commercial success of the group’s first seven studio albums could hardly have prepared them for the monumental 12 GRAMMY® nominations they received in 1985 for the album Vocalese, making it the single greatest GRAMMY®-nominated album in one year. If one is judged by the company they keep, The Manhattan Transfer has kept some impressive company indeed — Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, Smokey Robinson, Laura Nyro, Phil Collins, B.B. King, Chaka Khan, James Taylor, and the original Jersey Boy, Frankie Valli.
A N OT E FROM MAN H AT TAN T R AN S FE R We are all deeply saddened at the loss and passing of Tim Hauser on October 16. Tim was a phenomenal artist and musician. In addition, he was a genuine friend and colleague to us all. Of course, Tim is irreplaceable in our hearts and in music, yet to honor the legacy that he began, The Manhattan Transfer will continue to tour and will perform all of their confirmed shows through 2014 and beyond. To help celebrate his memory and continue the extraordinary musical journey he started, Alan, Janis and Cheryl welcome Trist Curless to the stage. Trist has a long history with the group, having stepped in before. A native of Cheyenne, Wyoming, he is no stranger to vocal harmonies. In 1995, he co-founded the pop-jazz vocal group m-pact, with which he has performed in festivals and concert halls around the world. He’s also written, arranged, and produced many of the group’s songs. He can be found on the other side of the microphone as well, working as an audio engineer for several vocal groups and bands, including Straight No Chaser, Pentatonix and Take 6.

WISHING CHAIR PRODUCTIONS Children in Nashville have been enchanted by Nashville Public Library’s puppet shows since Tom Tichenor’s first production in 1938. Wishing Chair Productions, the library’s resident puppet troupe, continues this tradition by creating worldclass shows that delight children and adults alike. Brian Hull leads this talented group of performers in creating the puppets, scenery and music for original productions, such as Anansi the Spider, that reflect the diverse storytelling traditions and cultures of Nashville. Other shows recreate classic
works such as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The troupe also continues to perform original Tichenor shows, including The Little Rabbit Who Wanted Red Wings. Wishing Chair Productions partners with cultural institutions like the Nashville Symphony and the Nashville Jazz Workshop. Drawing on Nashville’s own talented musicians and theater professionals enables the troupe to bring each story to life with wonderful music and inventive storytelling. The troupe’s Puppet Truck works in conjunction with Nashville Public Library’s Bringing Books to Life program to perform live shows at community events, reaching children and school groups who aren’t able to visit the Main Library’s Children’s Theater. Each year, more than 69,000 children attend the puppet shows and storytimes at the Main Library. Annual attendance for Puppet Truck performances tops 27,000.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM S PEC IAL EV ENT
Ever since Home Alone appeared, it has held a unique place in the affections of a very broad public. Director Chris Columbus brought a uniquely fresh and innocent approach to this delightful story, and the film has deservedly become a perennial at holiday time. I took great pleasure in composing the score for the film, and I am especially delighted that the magnificent Nashville Symphony has agreed to perform the music in a live presentation of the movie. I know I speak for everyone connected with the making of the film in saying that we are greatly honored by this event…and I hope that tonight’s audience will experience the renewal of joy that the film brings with it, each and every year.

“They saved my life” –Duane Eddy
At Williamson Medical Center, our story is best told by our patients. They have been here. They know us well. To Deed and Duane Eddy, Williamson Medical Center is where Duane’s life was saved when he suffered an abdominal aortic aneurysm. What started out as back pain ended with Duane collapsing at our front door. One more red light and he wouldn’t have made it, his doctors told him. What happened over the next few days, the Eddys describe as a symphony. Nurses, doctors and hospital staff working together to produce a beautiful outcome that meant Duane walked out of the hospital and back on stage where he belongs. We want to hear your story.

ABOUT THE ARTIST No one in popular American music has recorded for so long and at such a high level of excellence as Tony Bennett. In the last 10 years alone, he has sold 10 million records. The essence of his longevity and high artistic achievement was imbued in him in his loving childhood home in the Astoria section of Queens, where he was
born on August 3, 1926. He attended the High School of Industrial Arts in Manhattan, where he nurtured his two passions, singing and painting. Bennett’s big break came in 1949, when comedian Bob Hope noticed him working in Greenwich Village. As Bennett recalls, “Bob Hope came down to check out my act. He liked my InConcert

Born on February 23, 1685, in Halle, Germany; died on April 14, 1759, in London, England Messiah Composed: Handel composed the first version of Messiah in just over three weeks, between August 22 and September 14, 1741, but continued to make revisions to the score — in some cases adding new arias — for subsequent revivals of the work. First performance: April 13, 1742, in the Great Music Hall in Dublin, with the composer conducting. First Nashville Symphony performance: December 15, 1963, with Music Director Willis Page. Estimated length: 2 hours and 20 minutes in performance, with a 20-minute intermission
O
verall, the career of George Frideric Handel resembles that favorite symbol of eighteenth-century England: the wheel of fortune. The man who was born Georg Friedrich Händel to a barber-surgeon in Halle, Germany (less than 100 miles from J.S. Bach’s birthplace) settled in London in 1712 and made England his home until he died. Handel found admiring royal and aristocratic patrons there but also enjoyed success as a musical entrepreneur, managing the production of a prolific series of Italian operas

which he wrote for the London stage. Then, after his reputation and fortune soared, fashions changed and Handel came close to the brink of ruin. It was through his cultivation of the English oratorio — essentially, opera in disguise, without the costumes — that he turned his luck around once more. Messiah belongs to this pivotal turning point in Handel’s career, when he was shifting his focus away from the genre of tragic opera (opera seria) that had become a central preoccupation of his London career. In fact, it was with opera (Rinaldo, in 1711) that Handel scored his first hit in London. Opera seria involved setting librettos in Italian which recounted stories from mythology or history. It was a genre calculated in part to showcase the star singers of the era, often with spectacular (and spectacularly expensive) special effects as part of the staging. By the late 1730s, the high costs of production were making it an unsustainable business model. What's more, significant changes in the English public’s musical taste could not be ignored. After Messiah, Handel ceased writing Italian operas altogether and concentrated primarily on oratorios in English. Handel cultivated an English variation on the older oratorio idea, cleverly mixing a sense of moral uplift with the entertainment value of opera, minus the expense, costumes, and fussy, overpaid egos. Oratorio had an additional appeal, in that it seemed more acceptable to emerging middle-class audiences wary of the scandal-tinged world of opera. But this association with the sphere of secular performance generated some initial resistance to Messiah. After producing a highly successful series of both oratorios and operas in Dublin in the 1741-42 season, Handel chose to conclude it by presenting the world premiere of Messiah in the spring of 1742. Despite the praise the new work won from its Dublin audiences, back in London — where Handel cautiously introduced Messiah under the title “New Sacred Oratorio” in 1743 — it became the subject of controversy as a debate raged in the press. Messiah’s method of setting actual scriptural texts, as well as its delineation of Jesus within a genre that could be performed “for diversion and amusement,” triggered charges of
W H AT TO L I ST E N FO R Handel’s musical expression homes in on the universal emotions that underlie each stage of the Christian redemption narrative. Handel was above all a man of the theater, and his operatic genius for establishing the mood to suit a given situation is everywhere apparent. But in opera, Handel typically accomplishes this through a lengthy chain of arias. The centrality of the chorus in Messiah allows for greater diversity. Part One establishes a formal pattern of recitative, aria, and chorus, which then allows for further variation in the other two parts. Handel moreover draws on the gamut of international styles of his era, mixing highly wrought, thrillingly complex Northern European counterpoint alongside straightforward, Italianate lyricism, majestic French rhythms, and homophonic choruses. He avails himself as well of an astonishing range of colors in the accompanying textures, though with a remarkable economy of instrumentation. Notice, for example, how the trumpets remain silent in Part One until “Glory to God,” and are subsequently kept in the wings until the “Hallelujah!” chorus at the end of Part Two. (Incidentally, in contrast to what is often assumed, the glory this chorus depicts refers

becoming manifest in human history (hence the lack of the definite article — “the Messiah” — in its title). There is very little dramatic impersonation of characters. The narrative is indirect and suggestive, and, as has been often noted, downright confusing to anyone not familiar with the implied events involving the life of Jesus. Jennens divides the libretto into three acts (although he calls them “parts”), much like the organization of a baroque opera. Part One centers around prophecy and the nativity of Jesus, ending with his miracles (this is the part of the oratorio that is most closely tied to the Christmas season). Following its evocation of hope comes a condensed version of the Passion story of sacrifice in Part Two. Part Three concludes with the implications of Christ’s redemption of humanity from the fall of Adam.

blasphemy, although these were leveled against the secular context of the performances rather than Handel’s music itself. The fretting subsided within a few years, although the only times Handel led Messiah in a non-secular space were in his last years, when he gave midday performances in the newly built chapel of the Foundling Hospital. (The fact that the composer donated proceeds from Messiah concerts to charitable causes added to the work’s allure.) During his last decade, Handel conducted annual performances that became a highlight of the season. These were always given in the spring, at Eastertide. It was only after his death that the association of Messiah with the Christmas season took root. Handel also introduced changes at several of these revivals. For the most part, these involved substitutions or rewrites of arias. They reflected practical performance issues and took into account the limitations or strengths of the particular soloists on hand. In fact, even the Dublin premiere varied somewhat from the score Handel had written out beforehand. For the revival of 1750, for example, since the castrato Gaetano Guadagni was available (he later created the role of Orfeo in Gluck’s famous opera), Handel recast “But who may abide the day of his coming” to include a dizzyingly virtuosic setting — one of countless remarkable instances of Handelian word painting to reflect verbal images in music — of the phrase “a refiner’s fire.” Although we tend to think of Messiah as the quintessential English oratorio, its text represents an unusual approach to the genre. Librettist Charles Jennens had collaborated previously with Handel and likely compiled the libretto for Israel in Egypt (first presented in 1739) which anticipates the method of construction of Messiah, arranging excerpted texts from the bible. But the process is less straightforward in Messiah. Jennens — a wealthy patron who was nevertheless an outsider, disaffected with contemporary English politics — juxtaposes extracts from both the Old and the New Testaments to represent the basic narrative of Christian redemption. Rather than a biographical sketch of the life of Jesus, Messiah concerns the very idea of divinity

not to the moment of Christ’s resurrection but to the triumph of redemption). Consider, too, the compelling psychological range Handel explores, encompassing in Part One alone the fathomless darkness associated with the period of universal waiting for a savior; the oasis-like calm of the purely instrumental “Pastoral Symphony,” with its evocation of the music of shepherds; and the dancing exuberance of “Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion.” Handel continually finds freshly inventive ways to “paint” the words through music (witness the “straying” lines of “All we like sheep”) but subtler surprises are often hidden within his settings as well. In that same chorus, Handel engineers a detour from the cheerful mood that predominates into the tragic minor when the consequences of human failure are suggested. Amid all this variety, by the end of Part Three Handel has taken us on a journey that will later

become familiar in the symphonies of Beethoven — the passage from darkness to enlightenment and final victory. The “Hallelujah!” chorus may seem unbeatable, yet somehow Handel manages to follow it with still more glorious music: the soaring certainty of “The trumpet shall sound” and the progression of the choral finale, with its fugal setting of “Amen.” As the voices weave their threads together, that final word becomes a serene chant, all-encompassing in its resonance. In addition to 4 vocal soloists and mixed chorus, the version of Handel’s scoring for Messiah used in these performances call for an orchestra of 2 oboes, bassoon, 2 trumpets, timpani, strings and continuo. — Thomas May is the Nashville Symphony’s program annotator. He writes extensively about music and theater.

FALL/WINTER 2014 – 2015
DISPLAY UNTIL DECEMBER 31, 2014
From the performing arts to sports, Nashville Arts & Entertainment Magazine celebrates the thriving, creative spirit of one of the most exciting cities in the nation. A work of art unto itself, the magazine is your ultimate source for exclusive interviews, news, and information, including a calendar of events. The perfect-bound annual glossy is a beauty, exclusively distributed in the 800 rooms at the Omni Convention Center Hotel, in addition to other select locations. Of course, you’ll want one for your coffee table, too. The brand new edition includes a fun piece that takes you backstage at TPAC, the Nashville Symphony, the Grand Ole Opry, and Ryman Auditorium. New this year, Nashville Arts & Entertainment will honor five remarkable Nashvillians whose lives have impacted our city in countless ways. Nashville Arts & Entertainment Honors is pleased to make a donation of $1,000 to each of five different charities these honorees support in recognition of their tremendous spirit of giving and encouragement. Read all about it! Get your copy at Barnes & Noble, Costco, Hudson News Gift Shops at the airport, Kroger, Publix, and finer newsstands throughout middle Tennessee or purchase online at NAEmag.com. The magazine is also distributed by the Nashville Chamber of Commerce, the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development.
Nashville Arts & Entertainment Magazine is published by Glover Group Entertainment. For information about advertising in the magazine — or the Performing Arts Magazine you received at today’s performance — visit GloverGroupEntertainment.com or call 615-373-5557.
