It didn’t take long after the opening of our Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Center for its impact to be felt across the community and even further. Yes, it was a milestone as a significant teaching facility, but even more important was that it represented our continued move in recent years into the research arena. In fact, the College of Pharmacy just received the university’s first National Institutes of Health grant for research over the next five years which could impact breast cancer treatment.

Impressive recognition for a university of our size. But not surprising, given our commitment to creating far-reaching science and health sciences programs with a mission to benefit others. From our highly ranked pharmacy and nursing schools to a new master’s in pharmacy informatics and a developing physician’s assistance program, we’re strengthening our longtime reputation for graduating students who academically and spiritually have what it takes to make a difference.

For the first time, our pharmaceutical research is being taken for granted.

M U S I C I A N S

What inspired you to become a musician – and what drew you to the violin? I have older sisters, and I wanted to do everything they did. Two of them played in orchestra growing up, and when I was 4, my parents took me to one of my their concerts. I couldn’t really see them because they were in the wind section, so I decided that it would be better to sit up front. The cello was too big, so that’s how I landed on the violin. You’ve worked a lot as a session musician. How does that experience compare to performing in the orchestra? There’s a large pool of talented performers and arrangers in town. Sometimes you’ll have a session where you’ll play a simple arrangement, but the experience with the artist is really special. And sometimes the artist isn’t even present, but your arranger has done a very intricate chart and it’s exciting to be a part of that. When you’re recording, the music needs to be there immediately, so session work hones your skills in learning something quickly. There are many Christmas CDs I’ve been on, because it’s always Christmas in the recording industry here. It’s always fun to dog-ear those as Christmas gifts. Both your husband, Jeff Bailey, and your stepson, Preston Bailey, perform in the

orchestra’s trumpet section. What’s it like to have your family go to work with you every day? It’s great. I met Preston when he was 12, and it’s been lovely to see him evolve as a person and as a musician. I get a real kick out of watching and hearing him grow. And Jeff — I’ve always admired his playing and his work ethic. He really inspires me, and to be around that for more than just a few hours a day is a real honor and a luxury. Do you enjoy listening to music when you’re not at work? If it has been a long day, I really enjoy silence. I wasn’t that way until I moved to Nashville, as my schedule wasn’t as full. I like classical guitar, jazz, salsa, Pink Martini, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat ”King” Cole — an eclectic mix. I love 1970s music too. What would you most like people in the audience to know about the Nashville Symphony? When I first joined the orchestra, I was impressed by the ensemble, how they’re able to play together, and how they are able to change styles so quickly and so well. We play Styx one week and Mahler’s Ninth the next, and not every orchestra does that effectively. Rosemary Clooney years ago said that we were one of the best orchestras she had done a concert with. To get a compliment like that touches you. The people are genuine here, and I’m really proud of being in the orchestra, as well as being with my section. It’s a good group of people, and it’s an honor to be here. Learn more about the musicians of your Nashville Symphony at NashvilleSymphony.org/meet-our-musicians.

Elevating education to a fine art. It should come as no surprise that a school known for its academics is equally recognized for its fine art programs. Whether art, chorus, band, drama or theater, students are able to discover and pursue their own creative talents in new and exciting ways. As part of Lipscomb University, they are also able to do it on a much larger stage with access to first-class art studios, a variety of performance venues and collegiate-level instructional experiences. Our choruses continue to receive high honors and top state rankings, outstanding musicals are performed year-round and, most recently, our band received superior ratings and was asked to perform at the state concert festival held at Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music. ABOUT THE SHOW Bridging the gulf between rock ’n’ roll and classical music, conductor/arranger Brent Havens takes the podium to present The Music of Led Zeppelin, a program he scored to extend the listening experience of Led Zeppelin’s timeless tunes. Performed by an orchestra and amplified with a full rock band, the show captures Led Zeppelin’s sheer blast and power riff for riff while cranking out new musical colors. “Our concept was to take the music as close to the originals as we could and then add some colors to enhance what Zep had done,” Havens says. “The wonderful thing with an orchestra is that you have an entire palette of sounds to call upon. The band is reproducing what Led Zeppelin did on the albums, verbatim, and then having an orchestra behind the band gives the music richness, a whole different sense of power.”

Delivering a note-for-note interpretation, vocalist Brody Dolyniuk acts as a window between the audience and the reworked material. “The music itself is one thing, but Brody more than captures the spirit of Robert Plant,” Havens says. With the support of producer Rob Cross, artistic director of the Virginia Arts Festival, Havens first conceived the show for the Virginia Symphony, where Cross was orchestra manager at the time. The Music of Led Zeppelin has proven a great way to introduce rock fans to the symphony experience. “I’m sure there are people who come to these shows who have never seen their city’s symphony orchestra, and this allows them to experience something new, along with the music that they already love,” says Havens.

BIOGRAPHIES

SC H ERM E R H O R N

BUGS BUNNY Bugs Bunny is one of the most recognized cartoon characters in the world, whose signature phrase “What’s Up, Doc?” has long since entered the English language. Bugs’ first ‘reel’ appearance in front of his soon-to-be-adoring public was in A Wild Hare directed by Tex Avery. Since then, Bugs’ zany antics in hundreds of cartoon favorites have made him a legend throughout the world. This cool, collected, carrot-chomping rabbit is the unequivocal superstar of the Looney Tunes family. With never a ‘hare’ out of place he always manages to outsmart his adversaries, whoever they may be. He’s a real American icon who has graced the TV and cinema screens the world over. Bugs Bunny’s cartoons have twice been nominated for Academy Awards, and his Knighty Knight Bugs won a coveted Oscar. Bugs has starred in four films in addition to his hundreds of animated shorts and 21 prime time television specials. The photographing or sound recording of this concert or possessions of any device for such photographing or sound recording is prohibited. Ms. Evancho’s management is Marc Johnson, Align Entertainment Group. Ms. Evancho records exclusively for SONY MASTERWORKS.

ABOUT THE ARTIST It was Jackie Evancho’s love of the film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s The Phantom of the Opera that stirred the passion within her to begin singing and posting videos to YouTube. Not long after gaining a degree of notoriety for those videos, Jackie decided to post her rendition of “Panis Angelicus” to YouTube during the fifth season of NBC’s America’s Got Talent variety show. The response was overwhelming and earned her the opportunity to perform in front of the judges on live television. Jackie’s first performance on America’s Got Talent left audiences and judges astonished that such a beautiful soprano voice could come from a 10-year-old girl. During her next appearance in the competition, judges asked Jackie to improvise a tune, which she performed flawlessly. The young soprano from Pittsburgh with the stunning voice won runner-up and launched her music career, signing with Columbia Records

shortly thereafter. Since her appearance on the show that made her famous, Jackie has established herself as a legitimate force within the classical crossover genre. Her debut EP, O Holy Night, was released in November 2010 and became the year’s No. 1 bestselling debut recording, with sales exceeding 1 million copies. In 2013, Jackie made her acting debut in The Company You Keep, for which legendary actor/ director/producer Robert Redford cast her to play his daughter. The same year, she performed as part of an unprecedented Cirque du Soleil extravaganza at the Bellagio’s “O” Theatre to support “One Night for One Drop” on World Water Day. After parting ways with Columbia Records, Jackie found a home with Sony Masterworks and released her third studio album, Awakening, in July 2014. Like her other recordings, it debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s classical charts. InConcert

New this year, Nashville Arts & Entertainment will honor five remarkable Nashvillians whose lives have impacted our city in countless ways. The Nashville Symphony is committed to serving Nashville with world-class music and education programs not just for today, but for generations to come. If you share the same vision for your orchestra and your community, please consider making a planned gift to the Nashville Symphony. Your gift will leave a lasting impact on Middle Tennessee and beyond! You can make a gift that costs you nothing during your lifetime — it’s true! By making the Nashville Symphony the beneficiary of your will, trust, retirement plan, life insurance policy or other estate planning vehicle, you’ll help guarantee our financial strength tomorrow without affecting your cash flow or your family’s financial stability today. The Legacy Society honors those who include a gift to the Nashville Symphony in their estate plans. Accepting our offer of membership allows us to honor your future gift and to say “thank you” now. Be “instrumental” in our success by sharing your passion for music with future generations. For more information on the many creative ways to make a planned gift, please visit www.nashvillesymphony.org/plannedgiving or call Maribeth Stahl at 615.687.6532.
