Welcome to the Tennessee Performing ArTs CenTer by Kathleen W. O’Brien

TPAC President and Chief Executive Officer

We hope your experience with the live performance today is a fun, meaningful, and even magical time for you, your family, and your friends. In this premiere of a new publication format for TPAC, we focus on how live performance is meaningful and relevant in education. As we note in a story on the next page, great works of art are unique records of human experience. Naturally offering a wealth of connections to every subject taught in our schools, they are powerful tools for teaching all ages. As 45 states including Tennessee implement the new federal Common Core Standards, now, more than ever, TPAC Education and the performing arts are making a powerful impact in the classroom. It’s not hard for our teaching artists, educators or staff to get a handle on what Common Core

means, because we’ve practiced discovery-based learning for more than 30 years. In the simplest terms, Common Core and our arts education strategies teach problem-solving, critical thinking, literacy across subject areas, collaboration and other skills critical to academic achievement and later success in college and career. Read on! I hope you are proud to claim one of the largest and most comprehensive arts education programs in the nation as Tennessee’s own. Just as the magic and power of the live performance has engaged you and yours today, the performing arts make learning fun, meaningful, and even magical for the children of your community. With kindest regards,

Hats off to Amerigo, Too!

who coordinates the special arrangements for us. The meal, the atmosphere, and the service are outstanding. I can’t imagine a better way to honor our volunteers and their contributions to TPAC.”

TPAC greatly appreciates Amerigo’s generosity to help honor the people who contributed 5,866 hours of their valuable time last season, valued at $129,873.24. Donning colorful hats—some themed to Broadway shows—100 volunteers enjoyed the elegance of the three-course meal and atmosphere for the fun, festive event. Service pins were presented to volunteers celebrating special anniversaries, including 25 years for Deb and Howard Thompson, the first time anyone has marked that length of time at TPAC.

Amerigo has three restaurant locations in Nashville, Brentwood, and Memphis, Tennessee, and one in Jackson, Mississippi, offering a casual, cozy and upbeat atmosphere and serving new world Italian cuisine. The award-winning bistro chain, established in 1987, features a wood fire oven grill and an American and Mediterranean twist on traditional Italian food. The Nashville restaurant is conveniently located near TPAC at 1920 West End Avenue and offers both lunch and dinner menus for everything from an intimate pre-show date to large group celebrations.

For the seventh consecutive year, Amerigo, An Italian Restaurant, recently donated a three-course meal for TPAC’s annual “Hats Off to Volunteers.”

“We had another great time at Amerigo as we celebrated another great year with our volunteers,” said Mary Blair, TPAC’s Assistant House Manager and Volunteer Coordinator. “We’re extremely grateful for our partnership with Amerigo and Ali Gensert, the restaurant’s sales and marketing manager,

TPAC Education Collaborates with Montreal Company on English-language

PinoCCHio

The English version of Pinocchio premieres to student audiences in Nashville this school year, following an adventuresome collaboration between TPAC Education and a theatre company with similar artistic vision and educational mission.

U.S. and Canada — sometimes performing in French, sometimes performing in English, and sometimes (like New Orleans) performing in both languages.

The innovative teacher will use Pinocchio to engage students in learning that will help them to master such skills as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication — all fundamental to the thrust of the current education standards.

“When we started talking about whom to approach about the translation, really only one organization came Impressed and inspired by their experience with TPAC to mind and that was TPAC Education,” said Bélanger. Education, when touring its adaptation of Alice in “Their artistic vision and educational mission is similar to ours. Pinocchio is one of ten professional productions of theatre, music, and dance on TPAC Education’s 2013-14 Season for Young People. The play is also an ArtSmart focus work, central to cross-curriculum learning in up to 80 classrooms this fall.

Marian Graham

For example, Marian Graham, a 6th grade teacher at May Hughes School, created a detailed project plan around Pinocchio for interactive project-based learning connected to 23 specific state and federal standards.

A perfect match for the new Common Core criteria, Graham’s plan came out of her participation in a recent Arts Integration Institute, TPAC Education’s professional development program for educators.

Graham and other educators at the Institute noted how Pinocchio can be a vehicle for learning across subjects, including history, geography, language arts, and even math. TPAC Education knows that great works of art — unique records of human experience — naturally offer a wealth of curriculum connections. Students meet multiple learning objectives when they engage in the creative process. As they explore connections between Pinocchio and academic subjects, they gain greater understanding in each area. “Common Core emphasizes the skills children need to perform well in school and to be successful in college and careers. that for years,” said Roberta Ciuffo, TPAC’s Executive Vice President for Education and Outreach. “School is more engaging, more meaningful and more memorable with arts integration. Our approach is based on inquiry, interaction, and hands-on experiences geared to different learning styles. It promotes literacy, logic, creativity, and communication across curriculum. We encourage students to make their own connections to the art, to school, and to the world. Education is so much more than learning to spell, calculate sums, or memorize dates. What skills do children need to position them for success in school and life? TPAC Education supplies an answer to that question,” she said. The first affiliate of the renowned model created by the Lincoln Center Institute, TPAC Education educators and teaching artists have refined the practice of arts integration in the classroom for more than 30 years.

4 Programs for Children + 1 for Adults = TPAC education

TPAC administers one of the most comprehensive education programs of its kind in the United States, serving more than 1.3 million children statewide, from preschool to high school over three decades. Students attend performances. Teaching artists visit schools, where the arts are proven to advance learning and development. Arts Appetizers are pre-show events with refreshments on Wednesday evenings for Broadway tours presented at TPAC. Participants gain insight into the shows as they meet artists and interact with local experts on a wide variety of community issues. For just one example, the Arts Appetizer for War Horse will feature touring cast members and a Doughboy character from the Tennessee State Museum who will share fascinating facts about the contributions of Tennessee soldiers during World War I. A $5 reservation fee applies to each Arts Appetizer. TPAC Education also occasionally offers special workshops and experiences behind the scenes. He has published in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Playboy and other periodicals and was the 2006 recipient of the Writers Guild of America’s Ian McClellan Hunter Lifetime Achievement Award. Jersey Boys, his first venture into musical theatre, won four Tonys including Best Musical. The Addams Family, his second Broadway venture (with co-author Rick Elice), is currently playing on national and international tours. He lives in New York City and hopes to die in his sleep, surrounded by his loved ones and their attorneys.

RICK ELICE (Book). co-wrote Jersey Boys (winner 2006 Tony Award, 2007 Grammy Award and 2009 Olivier Award for Best Musical) with Marshall Brickman. His play, Peter and the Starcatcher, received nine 2012 Tony Award nominations (including two for Rick), and won five, more than any play of the season. It’s currently playing in New York and on tour across North America. Also on Broadway, Elice wrote The Addams Family (with Marshall Brickman, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa), currently touring North America, with productions in Europe and South America. In 2014, The Old Globe Theater in San Diego will present the world premiere of his new musical, Dog and Pony (music and lyrics by Michael Patrick Walker). Rick is currently writing a musical for Disney Theatricals with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, based on the film Make Believe; and Superfly (co-written with Seth Zvi Rosenfeld), directed and choreographed by modern dance legend, Bill T. Jones. Heartfelt thanks to those whose work in the theater makes him grateful for the day he was born: Sondheim, Stoppard, Bennett, Prince, Fosse, Robbins, Nichols, Tune, Nunn, Laurents, Stone, Kushner, Taymor, Papp, Schumacher, Schneider, Coyne, Brickman, Timbers and Rees. Rick thinks about them a lot. He never thought about Jersey much. He does now. BOB GAUDIO (Composer) wrote his first hit, “Who Wears Short Shorts,” at 15, for the Royal Teens, and then went on to become a founding member of the Four Seasons and the band’s principal songwriter. He also produced the hit “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” for Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand (Grammy nomination, Record of the Year) as well as six albums for Diamond, including The Jazz Singer. Other producing credits include albums for Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and the soundtrack for the film of Little Shop of Horrors. Several songs co-written with Bob Crewe have been cover hits for such artists as the Tremeloes (“Silence Is Golden”), the Walker Brothers (“The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”) and Lauryn Hill (“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”). With his wife, Judy Parker, Gaudio produced and co-wrote the Who Loves You album for the Four Seasons and one of Billboard’s longest-charted singles (54 weeks), “Oh, What a Night.” A high point in his career came in 1990 when, as a member of the original Four Seasons, Gaudio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which hailed him as “a quintessential music-maker.” To this day, Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli still maintain their partnership…on a handshake. BOB CREWE (Lyricist). “New York was pregnant in the fifties,” says Bob Crewe, “gestating with possibilities.” Crewe and music partner Frank Slay became independent writerproducers when the category hadn’t yet been invented. In 1957 they wrote and produced “Silhouettes” for The Rays, which skyrocketed to #1. Suddenly, producers in demand, they launched Freddie Cannon’s “Tallahassee Lassie” and Billy & Lillie’s “Lah Dee Da.” Crewe’s 1960’s unprecedented producing success with The Four Seasons birthed a new sound, striking a major chord in American pop. “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl,” “Ronnie” – all smashes! When lead Frankie Valli demanded a solo turn, Crewe and Bob Gaudio wrote (and Crewe produced) “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” which eventually became the century’s fifth most-played song. Crewe ran hot with artists from Vicki Carr, Oliver and Lesley Gore to Mitch Ryder, co-writing with Charles Fox the soundtrack for Jane Fonda’s film, “Barbarella.” Then his

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////page 23

own Bob Crewe Generation exploded with Music to Watch Girls By. In 1972 Bob was in L.A., where he revived Frankie Valli with “My Eyes Adored You” by Crewe and Kenny Nolan. We Will Rock You: The Music of Queen A smash hit for years in London, We Will Rock You weaves a creative story into 24 Queen hits, recreating the scale and spectacle of the legendary band’s concerts.

Presented by

November 12-17, 2013

Tunes include “Another One Bites The Dust,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “We Are The Champions,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young),” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” and the title song. Created by celebrated British comedian and writer Ben Elton, the show claims acting great Robert DeNiro as a producer. Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor are its musical supervisors, playing an ongoing role in casting for each new production. We Will Rock You has played London’s Dominion Theatre (now in a record-breaking eleventh year) and circled the globe, winning major entertainment awards worldwide. At the 2011 Olivier Awards, (the UK’s Tonys), it won the top honor in the people’s choice category. The rock theatrical takes place in the future when Earth is controlled by a mighty corporation. Musical instruments are banned. Only mindless, computer-generated tunes are legal. Individuality is taboo. However, a resistance movement is growing beneath the planet. The fight to bring the power of rock music back to the people is about to begin! “What distinguishes We Will Rock You is that it’s about rock music. There’s a lot of soul, and it’s what makes the show… with scorching live guitars all round,” wrote the Financial Times among other great reviews. “The sheer power of the best Queen numbers strikes hard.”

We Will Rock You is one show in the exciting 2013-14 season of HCA/TriStar Health Broadway at TPAC. Learn more about the other titles and the exclusive benefits you receive when you buy ticket packages. Visit tpac.org/Broadway, call 615-782-6560, or pick up a brochure in the lobby.
