As a teenager, Ming fought valiantly to escape one of history's darkest eras - China's Cultural Revolution - during which millions of innocent youth were deported to remote areas to face a life sentence of poverty and hard labor. He eventually made his way to the U.S. with $50 in his pocket, where against all odds, he later earned a PhD in laser la physics and graduated with the highest honors from Harvard Medical School and MIT. To date, Dr. Wang has performed over 55,000 eye procedures including on over 4,000 physicians. He has published 9 textbooks, holds several U.S. patents, and performed the world’s rst laser artiicial cornea implantation. Dr. Wang is currently the only surgeon in the state who performs 3D SMILE and 3D LASIK (18+), 3D Implantable Contact Lens (21+), 3D Forever Im Young Lens (45+), and 3D Laser Cataract Surgery (60+). He established a non-proot charity, which to date has helped patients from over 40 states in the U.S. and 55 countries, with all sight restoration surgeries performed free-of-charge.

SLEEP WITH THE SOY SAUCE.

There’s a better way to save money. Instead of finding comfort in your refrigerator, check the insulation in your attic. Since the greatest loss of cool air is through the roof, proper insulation here will make a big difference in your bill, and even pay for itself over time. What's Next? Broadway musical spectacular CATS returns to Nashville November 19-24

"CATS IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER!" – The Huffington Post

O

ne Broadway musical certainly has more than nine lives.

One of the biggest hits in theatrical history, CATS, returns to Nashville for its ninth time at TPAC’s Jackson Hall November 19-24. This marks the first tour of the first-ever Broadway revival of the iconic musical — and the timing couldn’t be more purr-fect.

CATS debuted on Broadway in 1982 as a flurry of furry acrobats spinning across the stage in perfect synchronization with intricate makeup and patterned body suits. Winning seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, it went on to hold the title of longest-running musical until it was surpassed in 2006 by Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. Now the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history, CATS is a cultural phenomenon. Both the original London and Broadway cast recordings won Grammy Awards for Best Cast Album, and the show’s hit song, “Memory,” has been recorded by

With the help of choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton, Bandstand), the revival of CATS walks the fine line between presenting a fresh, modernized take on the classic while paying homage to the original. “So many millions of people have a love affair with this show; I feel it is important to give them what they remember,” says Blankenbuehler. “I don’t want to break the DNA of the show, but I want to move it a little more quickly, deepen the storytelling, and strengthen the characterizations.” The daunting task to provide a fresh look came from Lloyd Webber himself. “Andrew reached out to me and asked me to fashion and write a new concert retrospective of his work, and that’s really how we got to know each other,” Blankenbuehler adds. “It is a huge flattering gesture to me to just be in the room with these guys.” Get tickets for CATS at TPAC.org, by phone at 615-782-4040, and at the TPAC Box Office, 505 Deaderick St. For groups of 10 or more, call 615-782-4060.

Applause Award Winners Dr. Phil Wenk (Delta Dental of Tennessee) & Mike Shmerling with TPAC President & CEO Jennifer Turner Gala Co-Chairs David & Lisa Minnigan; Gary Bynum

TPAC honors Delta Dental, Mike Shmerling with Applause Awards at Hamilton-themed TPAC Gala “Legacy. What is a legacy? It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see.”

T

his beautiful rhyme from the Broadway phenomenon Hamilton served as a compelling theme in August as hundreds of Middle Tennesseans – from local businesses and community partners to donors and art lovers – planted seeds of their support for Tennessee Performing Arts Center’s comprehensive arts education and outreach programs at the TPAC Gala. The center’s signature fundraising event provides critical funding to bring students from preschool to 12th grade to a variety of world-class performances, to provide teachers with valuable resources and training, and to send the arts into classrooms to make learning more impactful and engaging. This year, TPAC presented its highest honor – the Applause Award – to Delta Dental of Tennessee and to former TPAC Board

member, TPAC Foundation chair, and chairman of Clearbrook Holdings Corporation, Michael D. Shmerling. “Our sponsorship of the gala allows TPAC to bring arts and education into Middle Tennessee classrooms, creating these enriching experiences for youth,” says Dr. Phil Wenk, President & CEO of Delta Dental of Tennessee, who has provided valuable guidance on TPAC’s Board since 2012 and currently serves as vice chair. “There’s no greater return on our investment than watching the teaching artists in the classroom and seeing smiles on the children’s faces.” Shmerling served on TPAC’s Board from 1999 to 2006, including a term as the board’s treasurer. After his term, he served on the TPAC Foundation Board from 2009 through 2018 and as the foundation board chair from 2010 to 2018. “I couldn’t be prouder of TPAC and the tremendous impact it has had on this community over its amazing 40-year life,”

Co-chaired by David and Lisa Minnigan and Gary Bynum, TPAC Gala was themed to Broadway’s Hamilton, which makes its Nashville debut December 31, 2019 to January 19, 2020.
