Letter from the Publishers Dear Readers, At a time when hard copy print publications are rapidly disappearing in favor of the ipad, iphone, kindle or whatever the next device may be that replaces print...it’s comforting to know that there are venues that exist where we still cherish the hard copy printed word. You know what we’re talking about...that special time just before the curtain goes up at TPAC, Schermerhorn,The Franklin Theatre and the Martha Rivers Ingram Center for the Performing Arts at Vanderbilt. Clearly the performing arts venue setting is going to be the last bastion for print in America. If you or your company is interested in advertising, please let us know. We offer a very unique advertising package that not only includes all seven Playbill publications listed below, but also our very popular newsstand annual guide, Nashville Arts & Entertainment. We are the only print publisher in Nashville that offers our advertisers newsstand exposure plus the finest venues where you have the confidence in knowing that your advertising message is actually being seen. No fast forwarding, no channel surfing, and no distractions before the curtain goes up...everyone is focused on their Playbill. We are thankful for all our readers and advertisers...couldn’t do it without you! Enjoy the show! A NOTE FROM MATT & JAKE We live in one of the richest areas in the world for music. This area that stretches over Memphis, New Orleans and Nashville has birthed more than five major genres of American music including Country, Rock-a-billy, Gospel, Blues and Rock & Roll. With the soil and the soul being this rich in the south, there was little doubt that a force would come out of the ground and change all genres by being the King. That force was Elvis Presley. Elvis’ first single at Sun Records was “That’s All Right” (a cover of Arthur Crudup’s blues hit) on the A side and “Blue Moon of Kentucky” (a cover of Bill Monroe’s bluegrass hit) on the B side. Straight out of the gate this young performer, with the help of producer Sam Phillips, began combining the soul of blues music, the “slapback” of County music and the conviction of Gospel into one force. Once Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips began playing it on the radio audiences could not get enough. In 1956 Elvis made a big splash once again by stealing blues singer Big Mama Thornton’s 1953 hit “Hound Dog”. His appearance on the The Milton Berle Show created such public controversy over his show stopping, hip swiveling performance that he was later forced to dress up in a tuxedo and sing the song to an old basset hound on The Steve Allen Show. This iconic moment forever linked Elvis to the song that was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. This was the first time Elvis recorded a Leiber and Stoller song, but it would not be the last. They later wrote more than twenty of his hits including three title songs for his movies “Loving You”, “Jailhouse Rock” and “King Creole”. Like Elvis, Leiber and Stoller shared a passion for the blues sound of the black entertainment community. In 1957 they made another mark in popular music with the crossover double-sided hit “Young Blood/Searchin” by The Coasters. From there the legendary duo just kept climbing the charts with songs like “Yakety Yak”, “Charlie Brown”, “Love Potion #9”, “I’m a Woman”, “Spanish Harlem” and the all time favorite “Stand by Me” just to name a few. They were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. In 1995 a Broadway Musical Revue was created to celebrate the duo’s success. The show was nominated for seven Tony Awards and ran for five years. It still holds the record for being the longest running musical revue in Broadway history. As we began to think about our third season, we knew we wanted to honor the incredible music history of this region. We are convinced there is no better place on earth to present “Smokey Joe’s Café” than Middle Tennessee. We hope you agree...

MELINDA DOOLITTLE
Melinda became a household name on season six of American Idol, and has continued to thrill… Her debut album, Coming Back to You (2009), garnered rave reviews from critics, including The New York Times which hailed Melinda as one of the most ‘phenomenally gifted’ in years. Coming Back To You was followed by Beyond Me (2010); Melinda’s poignant, often humorous book recounting the life lessons that have shaped who she is today. Melinda graduated with a music degree from Belmont University in Nashville, TN and honed her skills as a background singer with the Gospel group Anointed. Since her time on Idol and her transition into the spotlight, Melinda has wowed audiences everywhere, from the White House to the Musicians Hall of Fame, from the Kennedy Center to Carnegie Hall. Melinda blazed new trails on ‘Twas The Night Before Easter (2011) as ‘Cassie Cassava’, the first African American character of Veggie Tales, the tremendously popular children’s cartoon. Also in 2011, Melinda released her original Christmas single, “God Bless Us Everyone”. Co-written by Melinda and renowned songwriter, Regie Hamm (“Time of My Life”), “God Bless Us Everyone” was acclaimed as a “new holiday classic”. Melinda’s love for music is eclipsed only by her love of giving back, as she dedicates much of her time to working with numerous charities, especially those that center on improving the lives of children, such as Ronald McDonald House and Malaria No More. She is currently in the studio, writing and recording songs for the release of her next album. For more information, visit www.MelindaDoolittle.com

Leiber and Stoller began their songwriting partnership in 1950 upon discovering that they had the same passion for Boogie Woogie and the Blues. If they had written no other song but Hound Dog, the names of Leiber and Stoller would still have been indelibly written in the history of popular music. However, as SMOKEY JOE’S CAFE - THE SONGS OF LEIBER AND STOLLER makes abundantly clear, they didn’t start or stop there. In fact, Leiber and Stoller’s contributions as songwriters and record producers have been so monumental that it is impossible to envision what American popular music would be like today without them. Their songs have been recorded by the likes of Elvis Presley, The Coasters, Jimmy Witherspoon, Little Esther, Amos Milburn, Charles Brown, Little Willie Littlefield, Bull Moose Jackson, Linda Hopkins, Ray Charles, Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thorton, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, James Brown, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers, Bill Haley and the Comets, Barbra Streisand, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Johnny Mathis, Count Basie, John Mellencamp, Lou Rawls, Tom Jones, Edith Piaf, Bobby Darin, Peggy Lee, Chet Atkins, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, B.B. King, Otis Redding and literally hundreds more.

ABOUT STUDIO TENN Studio Tenn Theatre Company was founded in the Fall of 2009 by nationally recognized director and artist Matt Logan, Emmy Award winning producer Philip Hall and Broadway and Film actress Marguerite Lowell Hall. The company’s inaugural production of Thorton Wilder’s Our Town was an enormous success and enough to convince Studio Tenn’s founders that this was something which could continue! Shortly thereafter Jake Speck left the Broadway cast of Jersey Boys to join Studio Tenn as its Managing Director. Together, Speck and Logan produced Studio Tenn’s first two seasons to much critical acclaim and are thrilled to be continuing their work as the resident professional theatre company of the Franklin Theatre! Studio Tenn is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and we cannot operate without the generous support of our sponsors and donors! It is the mission of Studio Tenn to use a rich combination of talent from Nashville and Broadway to bring classic works of drama and musical theatre to life in Middle Tennessee; and, to provide innovative educational programs designed to entertain, educate, and inspire the rising artists of our unique community. It takes the skill of an artist to restore this masterpiece. To the neurosurgeons at Saint Thomas Health, brain surgery is the highest form of art. The Truebeam STX radiosurgery program at Saint Thomas Hospital provides them the tools they need to apply therapeutic radiation with unparalleled pinpoint accuracy. That means renewed hope and improved quality of life to cancer patients.

One might say in our walk of faith, we’ve been down many paths. But few as exciting as the one we’re on now. With hard hats and rolled sleeves, we’re building a university that will serve students in greater, more innovative ways than ever in our history. Two new health science buildings providing state-of-the-art facilities for nursing and pharmacy.
In just the past 24 months— 16 new graduate programs, with more to come, that meet the demands of today’s workforce in fields such as information technology and biomolecular science. And almost 60 new faculty members to help us keep our stride. Watch us as we hammer out our future and take some exciting steps forward.
To us, this is a stepping stone.

JAKE SPECK
ExECUTIVE PRODUCER / MANAGING DIRECTOR Jake moved back to his hometown of Nashville in 2010 after completing a 2 year run on Broadway in the multiple Tony Award winning musical Jersey Boys. Most recently Jake played Steve in the ABC/Lionsgate pilot Nashville which has just been picked up and is going to series! After a decorated high school career and a couple of years spent performing locally in Nashville and singing with the group Nickajack (Developmental record deal, Asylum Records) Jake moved to New York City, having been awarded the highest national scholarship offered by the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Since graduating from AMDA in October 2003 Jake has worked with Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning lyricist Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler On The Roof), Two-time Tony Award winning director Des McAnuff (Big River, The Who’s Tommy, Jersey Boys), Academy Award winning writer Marshall Brickman (Annie Hall) and five time Tony Award winning director and choreographer Susan Stroman (The Producers). Mr. Speck’s professional career has taken him across the country performing in such shows as Kiss Me Kate, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Forever Plaid, The Melville Boys and many more. In 2005 Jake appeared in the film version of Mel Brooks’ hit musical The Producers. With Jersey Boys Mr. Speck has performed live on the Emmy Awards, the Tony Awards, at the Taste of Chicago festival, sang the 7th Inning Stretch at Wrigley Field, performed on the steps of city hall for the World Series Champion New York Yankees and was one of four Broadway cast members invited to the White House to perform for the President. It is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to return to Nashville and create a theatre company in the city that inspired him to make the arts his life’s work. Thanks and love to Emily, Nash & Noah!
